uring a visit to Scotland this April, the Duchess of Cambridge was presented with a knitted hat, babygro, and teddy bear by 17-year-old Caitlyn Coffield. It was then that she dropped the bombshell. No, not the baby’s sex; instead, Kate admitted, “I've been trying to knit and I'm really bad. I should be asking for tips!” Whether this was simple modesty or the Duchess really is tangling herself up in yarn – getting her ‘yfwd’s all mixed up with her ‘wyib’s – the announcement has been a true source of knitty inspiration. We've been searching for some of the best royal baby products around.

MAKING UP: When stuffing the doll, make sure you use just enough to keep her nice and squashy. Too much and she may become hard or lumpy, not enough and she could be too floppy. Try inserting the stuffing gradually, making sure it is distributed evenly. Remember, you can always add or remove a little more until you're satisfied.

LET’S KNIT EXCLUSIVE ACCESSORY PATTERNS
Alexa, Nicki & Fiona are the height of festival fashion
Monica Russel's matching set of boot cuffs, wrist warmers and lacy beanie are essential wear for a music festival or just keeping you warm when the sun goes down. They're quick to knit and feature simple lace elements, making them a good choice for beginners to the technique.
knitwise
YON AND YRN: The stitch pattern on all three accessories uses both yarn over needle (yon) and yarn round needle (yrn). Although you are creating an extra loop in both cases, we use different abbreviations depending on the stitches either side of the increase. Between a p and a k stitch, we use yon. That's because you just need to take the yarn over the top of the needle to get your extra loop. Yrn is used between two p stitches or between a k and a p stitch to describe the action of taking the yarn all the way around the needle and back to the front again.
“This set of three accessories is made using an easy lace stitch and the fun boot cuffs will add a new dimension to your wellies! LK DESIGNER MONICA RUSSEL

WHAT’S IN
Mins with...
Juli Mulcahy, Manager, ChiaoGoo (Westing Bridge LLC) Started by four Zheng brothers in May 2005, Westing Bridge LLC manufactures and distributes ChiaoGoo needles and products. The idea to make knitting needles originated from Mama Zheng. She frequently asked her husband, a carpenter, for different sized needles in order to knit sweaters to keep her family warm. The Zheng brothers grew up in Linan, China, the ‘bamboo capital of the world’, so it was a natural decision to use this plentiful and quick-renewing resource. The ChiaoGoo brand name means ‘highly skilled and craftful lady’ and was inspired by Mama Zheng. A lot of knitters have switched from their old favourite to ChiaoGoo because of the overall value ChiaoGoo offers. Being manufacturer and wholesaler allows us to develop products quicker than most other brands at a lower cost. We have plenty to be excited about at the moment. We recently introduced the beautiful TWIST Stainless Steel and SPIN Bamboo interchangeables and we have a yarn butler (to hold your yarn- rotating as you knit) due out later this year. We rely on our customer feedback in order to understand what they need. Once we have an idea that we feel will benefit many, we work hard to bring it to fruition always focusing on quality. Personally, I enjoy knitting those smaller projects. I once tackled knitting a sweater for myself and it was a disaster, so I tend to stick to the little things now. Right now, I couldn't even tell you what projects I have started but there are many – typical, right?! I want to start - a striped shawl in feather and fan stitch. It's just a matter of finding the time! To find stockists of ChiaoGoo products, go to www.chiaogoo.com or visit the UK distributor at www.hantex.co.uk
We keep you up-to-date with your favourite knitting shops and brands
Cashmere Colourmart Colourmart offers a wide variety of lace weight yarns, including these 100% cashmere yarns. Whilst the Plexi Green, a regular lace weight, costs £23.38 per 150g (1737m) cone and is spun by Todd & Duncan. Prices include postage, to purchase these or alternative colour choices, visit www.colourmart.com

Take your needles with you everywhere you go with Denise2Go from Denise Interchangeables. This ultra compact set of interchangeables fits in the palm of your hand! Look out for the latest additions to the range, plus there's a great crochet version too. For stockists, go to www.knitdenise.com
Brand-spanking new New to the UK is DesignEtte, a Danish company based just outside of Copenhagen.
