is a

fabulously bright jumper with a gorgeous glitzy finish Fair Isle colourwork originated among poorer communities who used the technique to maximise scraps of yarn, while the stranded double layer kept the wearer extra warm. Now, Fair Isle knitting is one of the hottest knitted trends. Pat Menchini has given the style a modern twist using the beautifully warm and snuggly King Cole Galaxy, embellished with sequins, and detailed using a bright pink shade of King Cole Glitz. Yorkshire

GOLD

The LK tour of Britain stops off in the historic heart of the British wool industry

W

ith its famous moors, dales and the Pennines, plus an impressive coastline and sandy beaches, its easy to see the appeal of England's biggest county. However, it's not just the dramatic scenery that attracts knitters and fibre fans. You can't miss the vast number of sheep grazing the lands, so it's no surprise that Yorkshire was once the centre of wool production in the UK. This rich heritage is still seen today, and with many knitters making a conscious effort to buy British, some mills are enjoying something of a revival. Read on to find out what else this compelling county has to offer.

From farm to factory British wool has long been recognised around the world for its quality, but hundreds of years ago, the fibre was usually exported to be processed and spun. In the 16th century, expert weavers came over from France, sharing their skills and leading to more production in the UK. There was an abundance of sheep and more land available for grazing and pasture than ever before. Weaving and knitting became an important cottage industry, often supplementing the family income. By the time of the industrial revolution in the mid-18th century, Yorkshire had already gained recognition for its fine woollen cloths and products, which were traded with merchants and transported around the world. Technological advances meant that traditional processes could be made quicker and more efficient, resulting in wool and textile mills springing up across the county.

Milling around The Luddite rebellions against industrialisation came to the West Riding in 1812, but the mills continued to thrive. Another of Yorkshire's important industries was mining, and cheap coal meant the area could develop ahead of other textile regions. However, life in the mills was hard and dangerous, with men, women and children working and living in terrible conditions – the life expectancy of a mill worker was just 25 years old. Philanthropist Sir Titus Salt made his name in the processing of alpaca fleece and owned several mills in the Bradford area. Salt had always been in favour of reform, and in the 1850s decided to build his own mill complete with a village for his workers. The newly named village of Saltaire not only provided accommodation for Salt's Mill's 3,000 workers, but also shops, a hospital, school and library. Although the mill is no

longer running, Saltaire is still a lively village and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Visit www.saltairevillage.info to find out more. Halifax-based yarn store Baa Ram Ewe produces its own exclusive yarn named after Sir Titus Salt. Titus blends British wool and alpaca fibres and has just expanded its colour range. Visit www.baaramewe.co.uk for further information and to buy online. Salt’s Mill, Saltaire, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site
