We would recommend these Letterland resources to accompany Level 1.

Fix-it Phonics Big Cards These super-sized cards are great for whole class focus and vocabulary extension. Introduce your class to each new sound by showing the enlarged scene. On the reverse side is a reminder of the story and a full list of words to find.

Big Picture Code Cards This pack of 46 large cards features a-z, long a e i o u and extra double consonants. With the Letterland character on one side and the plain letter on the reverse, they are an invaluable tool in the word building and live spelling exercises.

Action Tricks Poster Multi-sensory memory clues for the letter sounds are an important component of Level 1. Each Action Trick is illustrated and explained in the Student Books, but you may also want this poster to put up in your classroom. It provides a great reference point for whole class revision work.

An Alphabet Frieze is a useful classroom resource when introducing new letters.

There are lots of Letterland resources for children to use at home. See our catalogue for full details. Why not encourage word building and letter revision at home with the First Reading Flashcards ?

Letterland Fix-it Phonics

Level 1 - focuses on Aa-Zz shapes and sounds. Level 2 - revises a-z and introduces some important digraphs and trigraphs (2 or 3 letters representing a new sound e.g sh in shop). Level 3 - introduces more digraphs and trigraphs, building the foundations for full literacy in English.

Level 1 - Teaching order The teaching order is: s a t p i n m d g o c k e u r h b f l j v w x y z qu This order is recommended by the UK government and has been chosen for Level 1 as it maximises word building possibilities from an early stage. As you can see from the syllabus (pages 6-7) children can start to build words after just three lessons.

Alphabet names You may find that the children in your class already know the traditional alphabet names (ay, bee, cee... ). They may know an alphabet song, or may have been taught the alphabet names at home. In the early stages of learning, Letterland puts more emphasis on learning the sounds rather than the names simply because when children are learning to read, it is letter sounds rather than alphabet names that help them to read words. You can blend the letter sounds ‘mmm…’ ‘a…’ ‘nnn…’ into the word man, but the alphabet names ‘em’ ‘ay’ ‘en’ can only give you a non-word: emayen. At the end of Book 2, the children will review the whole alphabet including the sounds and alphabet names of the letters.

Your key to success At the heart of Letterland teaching are Lyn Wendon’s carefully developed and information-rich pictogram characters. A pictogram is a visual image that is designed to carry information. Letterland pictograms carry information about each letter’s shape and sound. By just starting to say characters’ names, children discover the most common sounds that letters make in words. Letterland pictograms work in accordance with recognised principles of memory and act as mnemonics (memory aids). The result is accelerated letter recognition and quick progress in phonics. Explain Letterland to your children like this…

When most people look inside a book, all they see are plain, black letters. That’s because they haven’t been to Letterland and they don’t know that every letter is really a Letterland friend.

Letterland is the secret place where all the letters live together. You have been given a special key to unlock that secret place and learn all about the Letterland characters.

Student Books

Welcome to Letterland The Student Books are designed to be used in the classroom with the Level 1 CDs. At the start of the lesson listen to the Letterland Theme Song. This song has lots of useful verbs for the children to become familiar with over time. Make up actions to accompany the song. You could pretend to: Fly, jump, ride, hop and drive to Letterland.

Introducing the characters Turn to the first page of the Student Book with your class. Look at the picture and talk about what you can see. Then listen to the next track. The character introduces him/herself. You will notice each character has an alliterative name. This helps reinforce the sound they make in words. The character will say their sound and three words that start with their sound. Repeat the sound and words with the character. It is very important to make the sound correctly.

8

Teaching Tip - Sounds Trick Teac To discover any character’s usual letter sound, just start to say their name: Sammy Snake, ‘sss’. This is a useful trick to help children remember the characters’ sounds.
