Fix-it Phonics Big Cards These super-sized cards are great for whole class focus and vocabulary extension. Introduce your class to each new sound by showing the enlarged scene. On the reverse side is a reminder of the story and a full list of words to find.

Picture Code Cards These cards feature a-z and over 40 other spelling patterns, with the characters on one side and plain letters on the reverse. They are an invaluable resource for the wordbuilding and live spelling activities in Level 2.

Vowel Posters This pack of four posters provides a great visual aid to the skills you’ll be teaching your children. Includes - The Vowels, Vowels Out Walking, Silent Magic e and the The Vowel Stealers.

For students

Highly recommended - Software Letterland Living Code Cards are animated flashcards that can be used on a single computer or displayed on a class whiteboard. Each new sound is brought to life with an animated story. Listen to the correct pronunciation of the sounds and try blending and segmenting the words.

There are lots of Letterland resources for use at home. See our catalogue for full details.

Letterland Fix-it Phonics

Level 1 - focuses on Aa-Zz shapes and sounds. Level 2 - revises a-z and introduces 26 important digraphs and trigraphs (2 or 3 letters representing a new sound e.g sh in shop).

Level 3 - introduces more digraphs and trigraphs, building the foundations for full literacy in English.

Level 2 - Teaching order The teaching order is: a-z revision, ng, ch, sh, th, a-e, ai, ay, e-e, ee, ea, i-e, ie, igh, y as i, o-e, oa, ow, u-e, ue, ew, oo, ar, or, er, ir, ur. At the heart of Letterland teaching are the pictogram characters. A pictogram is a visual image that is designed to carry information. Letterland pictograms carry information about each letter’s shape and sound. By just starting to say the a-z characters’ names, children discover the most common sounds that letters make in words. This creates a good foundation for learning. It is important that children either complete Level 1, or if they are introduced to Letterland at Level 2, care must be taken to ensure the a-z sounds and shapes are fully mastered at the start.

Further Phonemes - Introducing digraphs & trigraphs Level 2 introduces 26 more phonemes (units of sound). There are Letterland stories to explain the new sounds and spelling patterns. The stories often build on what the children already know about the characters so the process of learning quite complex spelling rules will feel more like learning little stories and characteristics about friends.

4

Your key to success Letterland pictograms work in accordance with recognised principles of memory. They act as mnemonics (memory aids). The result is accelerated letter recognition and quick progress in phonics. Explain Letterland to your children like this…

When most people look inside a book , all they see are plain, black letters. That’s because they haven’t been to Letterland and they don’t know that every letter is really a Letterland friend.

You have been given a key to unlock that special place and learn all about the Letterland characters. You will learn stories about what happens when these friends meet in words.

Letterland is a place where all the letters live together.

Student Books Level 2 Student Books are designed to be used in the classroom with the Level 2 CDs. Always do the exercises in the Student Book before starting the Workbook. The first section in Level 2 revises the a-z sounds taught comprehensively in Level 1. Level 2 then goes on to introduce stories to explain new sounds that occur when two or more letters come together.

Starting a lesson At the start of the lesson listen to the Letterland Theme Song . T TThis song has lots of useful verbs for the children to become familiar with over time. Make up actions to accompany the song. You could pretend to:

fly, jump, ride, hop and drive to Letterland.

Introducing spelling patterns

If the children have completed Level 1 they will already be familiar with this song.

Each new concept is introduced pictorially and on the audio CD. Look at the picture together first and encourage the children to guess what is happening. Then listen to the audio CD. In this instance Silent Magic e is introduced. This allows
