Story phonics – making letters come to life 01/10/2014 14:16
About Letterland Letterland is an imaginary place where letters come to life! The friendly Letterland characters help children to easily understand the sound and shape of letters – one of the key skills needed when learning to read and write. Simple stories about the Letterland characters explain letter sounds and shapes, so that confusion over similar looking letters is avoided and children are motivated to listen, think and learn. One of Letterland’s keys to success is its ‘Sound Trick’. By just starting to pronounce a character’s name, such as ‘a…’ (Annie Apple), ‘b...’ (Bouncy Ben), ‘c...’ (Clever Cat), a child automatically says the correct letter sound. It’s that simple! The combination of memorable characters and proven educational principles makes Letterland the ideal way to introduce your child to the alphabet. Moving on from the alphabet, Letterland teaches all 44 letter sounds in the English language, through stories rather than rules. The stories explain the sounds letters make when they come together in words. Learning new spelling patterns is wonderfully child-friendly with Letterland! For more information, including a pronunciation guide for all the letter sounds, see: www.letterland.com

About this book Letterland Phonics Touch & Spell transports young readers to the imaginary world of Letterland, where letters spring to life and their sounds are taught in a unique story format. These brief, beautifully illustrated stories give child-friendly reasons why, when certain letters come together, they make a completely new sound. After each story, talk about the Letterland characters and the story reasons for their change of sound. Spend some time finding objects in the illustrations that contain the new sound. Let your child point to and say each object, so they hear it repeatedly coming from their own mouths. Whether at home or school, your children will quickly discover how easy it is to remember the new sound just by learning the story reason for it. What’s more, the textured letter shapes with directional arrows help your child to remember how to form letter shapes. By getting these ‘movement pathways’ correct you will be ensuring that when your child moves on to joined-up writing, the transition will be much easier. Letter shapes - Children can finger-trace the textured letter shapes on each page. The dots and arrows help with starting positions and correct letter formation. (Where there are two arrows, the first stroke is shown by the longest arrow). Phonics skills - Have fun emphasising the sound again and again as you look for all the objects that start with the same sound. Reading skills - There are ‘Read, look and touch’ sections throughout the book. Try reading the simple sentences together. The sentences contain the sounds that have just been introduced as well as some high-usage words.
