How to use this book Letter sounds Children can use the Letterland Sound Trick to discover the letter’s sound: Just START to say any Letterlander’s name, and catch the very first sound that comes out of your mouth. That sound is actually the sound that letter makes in words. For example: Bouncy Ben ‘b…’ (not ‘buh’ or ‘bee’) Eddy Elephant ‘eh…’ (not ‘ee’) Firefighter Fred ‘fff…’ (not ‘fuh’ or ‘ef’) To hear all the correct letter sounds, please visit our website: www.letterland.com/letter-sounds

Letter shapes By making sure children start with the right movement pathway for each letter you will be ensuring that on moving to joined-up handwriting the transition will be smooth and easy. If young children are allowed to form letters their own way, incorrect habits quickly become deep-rooted and can be very difficult to correct later.

Using your stickers Go through these Phonics Activity Books together with your child, focusing on just a few letters in one sitting. Encouragement breeds success, so show your enthusiasm by awarding your child a sticker each time they complete a page. Next time, before focusing on a few more letters, go over the shapes and sounds learned last time. You may like to start an a-z scrap book with all the character stickers from Phonics Activity Books 1 and 2. You could cut out pictures from old magazines and choose together which of the a-z pages they should be placed on, based on their beginning sound. As you move through the series of Phonics Activity Books remember to come back to previous books to practice the sounds - until each and every sound can be said without hesitation. That achievement will be a very good reason to award the biggest and best of the stickers!
