Letterland Rhyming Flashcards The Letterland Rhyming Flashcards are an inviting way to introduce your child to the concept of rhyme, which plays an important part in learning to read and spell. These cards can be used in a variety of enjoyable games designed to help develop vital rhyming skills. Why is rhyming important? Rhyming helps children recognise patterns in spelling. For example, a child who can spell ‘cat’ can also spell ‘mat’, ‘hat’ and ‘rat’. Rhyming also helps develop listening skills, and enables children to recognise the final sounds in words and to anticipate word endings, also vital steps towards successful reading. These unique flashcards teach these important skills in a fun and memorable way. How the cards are arranged The cards have a colour image on the front and a plain word on the reverse. They also depict a Letterland character in the top left corner to help children identify the first sound in each word*. The pack is sorted into three groups, colour coded with a red, blue, or green *Except for the fox card where the word ends in x.

border for easy reference. Each group contains five rhyming sets, with one master card for each set (marked with a star). The three colour coded groups
The five master cards from the red group
The aim of the game is to match cards that rhyme with the images on the master cards. For example, ‘bug’ and ‘jug’ rhyme with ‘mug’ on the master card. As your child gets more

confident at matching the pictures, try playing the game using the word side only, without the images. The groups increase in level, from the easier red cards to the more difficult green cards, so as children progress they can be given more challenging tasks. How to use the cards Separate out one group of cards, putting the rest to one side. Lay out the five master cards in front of your child, picture side up. Now hold up the remaining cards, one at a time, asking your child to match each one to a rhyming master card. As each card is successfully matched, lay it on top of the master card and hold up the next card in the group. The game is complete once all the cards in a group have been matched to master cards. To play the game using the word side only, simply turn the cards over and repeat the process. Remember to reshuffle the cards before playing the game again. Other games to play Another way to use the Letterland Rhyming Flashcards cards is to lay out four cards, three rhyming and one not rhyming, and ask your

child to identify the odd one out. Alternatively, lay out ten cards from a group and ask your child to sort out those that rhyme. For more creative fun, select two rhyming cards and help your child to make up a rhyme using these words. The cards in the pack show all 26 Letterlanders in the top left corner so your child may also enjoy laying the cards out in alphabetical order. Some useful tips The Letterland Rhyming Flashcards can be used in many different ways and you may develop you own ways of using the cards that work best for your children. However, here are a few tips for successful use of the cards: Start off by looking at the pictures together • and saying the words out loud. Always a letter’s sound rather than its • name, forsayexample, ‘fff’ and not ‘ef’. Give plenty of praise your child • successfully matcheswhen a set. Don’t do too much at any one time – ten • minutes is probably enough. Above all, have fun and enjoy playing the • games together.
