USAGE NOTES This pack contains 75 flashcards and includes many of the most frequently used words in the English language. The same word is provided on both sides of each flashcard. On one side the Letterland pictograms give clues to help children sound out the word. The other side shows the plain word.

Letter Sounds At this stage, it is best to avoid the usual alphabet names ‘aee, bee, cee’ etc because most of them start or end with another letter’s sound. Instead use the special Letterland trick: just START to say the Letterlander’s name and the right sound will be on your lips! For example, the right sound for Bouncy Ben is ‘b...’, not ‘buh’ or ‘bee’. The Letterland Alphabet Songs CD/Cassette and the Letterland Living ABC Software will also help you pronounce the sounds correctly.

Vowels The vowel sounds as heard at the start of Annie Apple, Eddy Elephant, Impy Ink, Oscar Orange and Uppy Umbrella are known as ‘short vowel’ sounds. Two ‘long vowel’ sounds, i and o, are also introduced in this set of flashcards. They are picture-coded as Mr I, the Ice Cream man and Mr O, The Old Man.
Your child will have met Mr A, Mr E and Mr U in First reading flashcards.
Quarrelsome Queen’s umbrella Since qu is a unit of sound the u is picture-coded as Quarrelsome Queen’s umbrella. In Letterland, the Queen ‘does not go anywhere without her umbrella’. Double letters Where a word contains dd, gg, II, nn, ss or tt, your child will discover some new faces. They are Diana Duck, Golden Granny, Linda Lamp Light, Noisy Nicola, Sally Snake and Talking Tom. They both make the same sound at exactly the same time when they appear side by side in a word, so we hear that sound only once.
