Learn to read whole senten sentences

About these copymasters This set of copymasters is designed to develop print awareness at the letter level, word level and sentence level, all within one simple guided reading activity. Each sentence makes use of alliteration – the repeat of a particular initial letter sound – to heighten attention to that sound, to that letter's shape, to those alliterative words, and to a simple thought unit (the sentence) linked to the featured Letterland character. By going through the steps below, you will be guiding non-readers into an early experience of real reading. At first the children will simply be repeating the sentences. But as they interact with them, applying their listening skills and their observation skills they soon learn each sentence. They can also take home all their pages, stapled into a book, to proudly read out loud to their families.

Some ideas for using these copymasters Photocopy one sheet for each child to work on (same size or enlarged). Make an enlarged copy for yourself to teach from or display the page on a white board. Listen for sounds Introduce the Letterland character on the page, and practice saying his or her name together, • emphasising the first sound in each part of the name, e.g. Fffirefighter Fffred. Talk about the picture. What else can you both find in the picture that begins with the • Letterlander’s sound? Demonstrate how to highlight the alliterative letters for each character using a highlight pen. • Read your enlarged sentence to the children, pointing to each word as you read it. • Comment on the sentence. For example: “The words have told us something about Firefighter Fred’s fish. How many fish does he have?” Re-read the sentence. This time ask everyone to repeat the words with you as you point. • Re-read it again, speaking slowly and distinctly (still pointing). This time ask the children to • listen and raise their hands each time they hear the featured letter's sound. Repeat again, but this time the children listen with their eyes shut and raise hands! • Letter shape On your large sheet show how to finger trace the hollow letter shape. Then show how to do 'rainbow writing' (repeating the stroke in several different colours), or how to simply fill in the letter with one colour, following the handwriting stoke order. Finally, have fun finding all the alliterative objects in the scenes and colouring the picture! Make a Letterland Sentence Book Explain that each sheet will become a page in the child's own personal 'Letterland Sentence Book'. The children should read out loud together all the previous pages each time they add their latest completed page to their collection. When all 31 pages have been highlighted, coloured and re-read, provide copies of the cover to colour so each child has their very own booklet to take home and read every page to their friends and family.
