A01 TBH Project

Findings done above was the average time spent in hotels on the travelers. Since the site was located in the reclaimed area of the Southern part of the Tokyo bay, the new city Shin Toyosu was an alternative stay to sooth the populated main bay of Tokyo. The new island does not aimed in turning into a total tourist spot and resort area but to provide space for leisure for the local people for the nearby residential area. Also as a place to stay for young travelers and business travelers for working at Tokyo Bay.

Permenant Building Area

Event Space

As the shared space act as void in the building before transformation, wind can go through void to reduce wind load it takes compared with all solid building.

After transformation, the middle space is grouped to create larger space, which also maintain good ventilation as the logest solid span of the building is reduced compared to all solid building. Not only ventilation within the lot is enhanced, this is also beneficial to the immediate neightbourhood to enjoy more breeze around the area.

By merging th event space as part of the permanant building area, it saves 20% of the total space. Because no separate building area needed to be reserved for the event space, 20% more land can be spared for green area or for other functions, a more spacious landscape can be included for the programme.

Taking the inspiration from the daily bicycle life in Japan, elements from a bicycle wheel would be included in techtonic idea of the building. Using black stainless steel spokes/wires to recall the image of bicycle, putting the sculptural structure as a skin of a white building to stay two main elements in contrast. The very thin spokes/wires only act as decorative pattern and supported by heavier members mimicking the rim of a bicycle wheel.

To take the building in a more abstract level from the organic shape of a shell, I considered the primary function and the sinence involved Law of Reflection. I dis-covered lines to form a shell from the ray diagram, extruded in a circle path and amended it to create the three-dimensional space.

A03 White light (the complete self)

Defracted light (different identities)

Light deflects when passing through a prism, human deflects when facing different situation and form unique identity and character; and yet they all from the same source. Using the lighting to make multiple shadows on the wall, each shadow makes one character of myself. Consolidating the characters (shadows on wall) by placing photo collage on the spot of the shadow. All character is visualized and yet they all come from oneself (me).

I am a friend to a lot of people, my parents’ daughter, a loving girlfriend, a student and many more. Without these relationships making a character for me, who else would I be? What completed me as a whole? Installation of light and photo-collage to represent the deconstructed identity and character of oneself.

Smart Bus Stop ARH 656 Introductory Design Studio 2 SPRING 14’ AAU | type | Bus Stop in Kowloon Bay, HK

| project description | This Smart Stop Assignment is to entertain people who have been waiting for their buses a long time. (Because the site is in a quiet neighborhood, it serves mainly for the residence nearby) This project started by researching the light change observed on site, this was later brought as a light performance associated with music. The intensity of the sunlight was captured and controlled the volume of music. Higher intensity of the sunlight tuned up the music volume. When there is no obvious change in sunlight, the other sensor would take place to measure the light change bringing by the bus. The speakers were set at the height of the ear level when the person is sitting on the stool, so that to ensure the “audience” is voluntary.

I overlaid a graph on top of the diagram documenting the intensity of the sunlight casting on road. We can see gradation (the slope of graph) of the changing intensity is different in each interval. It also doesn’t seem to follow any curve cycle as that intensity depends on how much light filtered by the cloud. The verb I picked for this project is “Dimming”. The different intensity of sunlight casting on the road reminds me the dimming light when we play with the tuner to have your optimum brightness, in this case the “dimming devise” is a natural phenomenon.

The activities may include seminars, book reading sections, mini concerts for indie bands, performing arts such as dancing and drama, movie screening from small local production groups… ect. Among the many different elements within the Haight Neighborhood, three positive spirits are extracted to be the main idea of this program – Peace, Hope, Love.

L01 Paintings & Drawings | description | I see paintings and drawings as a healing tools to my emotion outlet. A lot of thoughts that could not or would not be written out in text could be expressed through imaginative imagery, whether they are abstract or not.

Abstrat of painting

It is comparatively the most accurate to the truth when it is “translated” by the event creator. And the worst would be those from gossips, spreading by a group of people adding their own creations and opinions. The truth is being covered by thick material, in occasions, there will be a chance to see the truth underneath. However, most part of the truth will be covered and becomes unseenable. I imagine I am protesting with all my energy and a voiceless throat, a knife and a knife I am trying to break the thick material on top. Facing that thickness of misunderstanding, every cut only reveals a hint of truth with one hair’s thick. This is only a tip of the iceberg. But I did not try to wash them all away, let them be here, let my crying soul connects and coexists with it, to become something more beautiful.

P01 Proposed A&A works for Food Factory 2013 - current Tai Po, HK (in construction) | client | Lei Garden Restaurant Group | arch team | Vicky Lau, Clover Tong, John Lai, Carlos Lee, Crystal Leung | my task | Assist architect in preparing BD submissions, tender/construction drawings, material sourcing, project management, participating site meetings, coordination with clients, consultants and contractors, PQP filing and other various tasks.

The project includs major building additional and alteration work converting a printing factory to food factory. Underground footings and most of the floor slabs were kept, additional lift, wall partition, a waste water treatment plant system and a whole new facade were introduced in this project.

[ MATERIALS ] Because of the tight budget, client requested to have a area comparison of the different amount of cladding use. Cladding area analysis and material board were presented.

Sample Board

[ STATUTORY SUBMISSION ] Assisted architect in preparing BD submissions. As the programme of this project is very tight. Although initial design was freezed, amendments were made due to client’s new requirement, discrepancy between the record plan and the site condition, additional requirement from the Building Departments and the other parties. GBP is still under amendments until this moment.

[ TENDER DRAWINGS ] Assisted project architect in preparing hundreds of tender drawings from plans, sections, design intent to construction details. The process helped me to thoroughly understand the details of the project, which helps a great deal in further liaison with other parties, especially during after site works commenced.

As this building was building more than 30 years ago, I can tell the building codes changes a lot just by looking at the existing structure of the building. Existing slabs and columns are very thin compared to newer buildings. Thus, structural feasibility becomes a major concern in the A&A works suiting client’s requirement. Many design features were revised to suit structural design as to build within allowable budget, these constrains are one of the most challenging concerns in this project.

Participating site meetings and site walk every week after site works commenced helps to understand the “real” site condition “off the paper”. This project is currently ongoing until summer 2015. I believe after assisting project architect in running through the whole project, a clear picture of the basic flow would help greatly in assisting the next project.

The design concept was from the chinese style medicine cabinet, which is a very traditional symbol for Chinese medicine. Being one of the most well known manufacturer of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong - Wai Yuen Tong is worth to be treasured as much as the valuable medicine inside the drawer. It also recalled and match the design of the tiling on the facade.

P04 TIA Study for Run in-out at Food Factory 2014 Tai Po, HK (completed)

[ TREE SURVEY ]

| client | NISSIN Group | arch team | Vicky Lau, Janice Lam, Crystal Leung | my task | Liaised with client and traffic consultant in conducting tree survey and TIA study at proposed location of run in-out.

This Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) study was carried out before deciding the programme for demolition of the existing building and the construction of the new building. The site consists two lots, with a shared canopy at the common boundary. Due to site constrain, the future construction work will cause insufficient space for current logistic need. Therefore, an extra run in-out would be needed to maintain the normal flow of the exit. However, trees outside the site boundary at pedestrian limited the width of the run in-out in fulfilling all statutory requirements. TIA study was thus conducted.

P05 Proposed Printing Factory Extension 2014 Tseung Kwan O, HK (completed) | client | NISSIN Group

Located in Tseung Kwan O industrial estate, extension of the printing factory was requested by client due to the insufficient space of the existing factory. Liaised with structural engineer with limitations and site condition, this new staircase was designed to comply with statutory requirement from BD. This project was a very good start and my first step to learn about building ordinance, to understand the basic concept in design manual - barrier free access and to coordinate with different parties.

[ SONG AFTER MIDNIGHT] The theme of this original music show – Song after Midnight was about dreaming. Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. It made a point that dreaming is actually a letter sent to you by your inner-self. According to what doctors said, we all dream every night, wheatear your remember it or not depends on the physical and mental condition of your body while sleeping.

[ DESIGN CONCEPT ] I chose to use post-it as my primarily component used in my design as a metaphor of posting and sending messages. Post-it also shares the same characteristic as the dreams do, it reminds things in fragments. It becomes a big picture when they gather with or without logical sequence or sense. Clocks were also used as a second element appeared on set as a methaphor of the different speed of time and timeframe happened in dreams.

[ LIGHTING ] Discussed with lighting designer and decided that apart from the side light and pars, we would like to tailor made gobos to enhance and matched with the non-speaking story telling in one scene. Spots of light stepped into the main set to portray and echo with the message of the original story.
