TOLOU COMMUNITY CENTER
TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY RECONSTRUCTION Master Y1 Type: Community Center Location: Fujian, China Villages in China, as we all know, only a few can benefited from the economic boom while the rest still made few differences with themselves ten years ago, in terms of both spatial and social fabric. Villagers still lived in a similar living environment and worked as farmers like before. Massive and large scale urbanization comes after the Chinese economic reform which leads to farmers escape to the city in their pursuit of a higher paid job and better quality of life. One child policy also weaken social bonding between descendants and the villages. Such social phenomenons are causing lots of villages in China vanish every years. The social, cultural and historical values embedded are losing with the fading homelands. This project studied the Tulou villages in Pinghe County, Fujian, where many local adult villagers have fled to city, leaving the young and old ones along with abandoned Tulou buildings in that region, while local government are seeking consultancy to preserve the Tulou area and develop tourism. The design approach for this project should be comprised of two parts: firstly, reconstructing the breaking community and secondly, activating the Tulou Buildings in the dying villages.
AERIAL VIEW
This project is separated into two major parts: the original village renovation to become a tourist hostel and a new recreational complex to accommodate leisure programs, such as community center, tea house, restaurant, etc., The community center is inspired from the form of tulou - arrayed units join together into circular, semi-circular, elliptic or linear shape. The form is further shift based on the required function and to articulate the surrounding context. Furthermore, eco-design will be integrated into the building, making it low carbon emission and environmental friendly. COMMUNITY CENTER

DALI MODERN ART GALLERY CULTURAL ACTIVATION
Master Y1 Type: Gallery/ Museum Location: Dali, Yunnan, China Dali City is a county-level city in northwestern Yunan Province, China, which is well known for its natural scenery and historical and cultural heritage. Due to its chinese traditional context, the city has attracted more and more artists from nationwide to station in the city. However, there is no such a specific place for the artists to gather, share, create exhibit and trade their talents. In view of this, the Contemporary Art Gallery is designed to fullfil such requirements. It is also a new tourism spot which is able to activate the city’s vitality for long-term development. DALI MODERN ART GALLERY
The Dali Contemporary Art Museum is comprised of three main levels, the basement and ground floors are mainly the public accessible space, which are art workshop, library, art classroom; and administration office. Also, carpark and storage room are located on the basement floor. The first floor contains the main gallery space with various size of exhibition rooms for adapting different needs and purposes. A retail street lies in the central axis with art shops open on both sides.

ARCHITECTURE FOR NEARSHORE DEVELOPMENT INRELATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE Master Y2 Type: Infrastructure, Research, Experimental Prototype Location: Tolou Harbor, Hong Kong
Hong Kong, a man-made city from top to bottom, with super high dense concrete forest and large area of habitable land created by decades of reclamation with only a few meters high above the sea level in average. This city is threatened by substantial climate change which caused sea level rise and more frequent extreme weather such as continuous hot weather , heavy rainstorm and especially super typhoon which will bring severe storm-surge and lead to flooding in all low-lying downtown districts including Kowloon, Hong Kong, and coast districts in New Territories. Flooding will affect the functionality of the city’s transportation system and the mobility of people, especially Hong Kong has much dependence on metro for the operation of the whole city, it will paralyze the city and cause unrecoverable lost of life and property. This project is a proposal for adapting to the forces of climate change, by embracing the ecological edge with platforms of nearshore habitation as prototype to coexist along a natural waterfront. It is based on the hypothesis that large area of low-lying habitable land in Hong Kong which is created by decades of reclamation, is threatened by continuous rising sea level caused by climate change. Accordingly, this project focuses on exploring an effective solution to confront the rising sea level and potential flooding problem while allows the possibility of co-habitation between land and sea in order to generate more habitable surface for the development of the city.
1.RESEARCH CENTER
PUBLIC GROUND LEVEL INTERACTIVE LEARNING SPACE FOR THE PUBLIC The main public layers, including ground floor and 1st floor are places for education, exhibition and propaganda on the topic of climate change which are open to the public. It is aiming for raising the awareness of climate change and environmental protection in society. These layers adopt a open plan layout to create large collaborative space inside the whole building, which enhances spacial connection, visual penetration, and communication and collaboration of different programs in the plan. There are several public concourses with abundant gathering spaces to allow people to gather and interact with each other. Large staircases are built in certain distance to let people transfer between different floors.

1.RESEARCH CENTER PUBLIC CONCOURSE
The public concourse is situated at the middle of the research & education center, just behind the entry sector. It is a triple high space with a huge light well illuminating the interactive space underneath which allows public circulation, interaction and leisure activities. The glass roof is supported by two Y-shaped columns with shading panels installed on the top. Artificial lighting is installed in the structural beam of the glass roof to ensure sufficient lighting level inside the space.
2.NEARSHORE MODULARIZING INHABITABLE UNIT EXPERIMENTAL PROTOTYPE FOR NEARSHORE DEVELOPMENT The modularizing inhabitable unit is an experimental prototype to demonstrate the possibility of building inhabitable structure over water so as to allow people to live and work nearshore. For the model shown left, it consists of several working decks protected by this wind-shielded facade, a vertical filtration system for the water treatment for experiment purpose, and a hatchery wall to for the cultivation of aqua creatures. The upper part of the tower is connected to the lower main structural column with base isolator installed in the junction which is for absorbing vibration from the wave and maintaining stability of the whole structure. Water pipe and sensor pass through the void in the middle of the column and reach out from the inlet/outlet underwater. This platform acts as a small workshop or research chamber being built in the nearshore water area. The modularizing inhabitable unit is designed to be assembled by modularizing units which allow it to change its function according to different needs and the requirement of the site. That means the unit has the possibility to be installed in different locations and conditions.
Above-Water Research Platform Perspective
3. FLOODING CONTROL STRUCTURE The Flooding Control Structure connects the north point in Ma On Shan and the Plover cove Dam to the North. The structure will open up to allow exchange of water in usual days, and close up to block off the rising tide during typhoon and storm. The structure makes use of the existing plover cove dam connection to allow pedestrian and cyclists to move along the structure, traveling between Ma On Shan and the other side of the Tolo harbour in a short time. The upper layer of the structure is the vehicle pathway and the middle part is the pedestrian walkway. Wind-proofing screen is installed in the windward side to protect the activities on the structure.

DRAGON HEAD (MENTIONED)
China Shenzhen SUPER High-rise Competition COMPETITION Type: SUPER HIGH-RISE Location: Shenzhen, China In my understanding, super headquarters should mainly play a role to serve active economic activities. And all these are definitely to be supported by utter genius, which comes from a super brain. The design - “DRAGON HEAD”, is a super brain vehicle constructed on super infrastructures. The proposal aims to create a wonderful material environment for the brain, to stimulate intelligence and passion, and to provide entertainment and rest, which would function as the center of the economic entity, offering us essential business wisdom. Meanwhile, the supporting infrastructures are supposed to effectively and also efficiently handle the human flow, material flow and information flow at the same time. Further, all these infrastructures will link the urban public space, allowing a maximum share with the public of tremendous energy from our super brain. Moreover, the headquarters will be most characterized by aggregation and interaction, high-speed and efficiency, and maximum share, which might also be described as Cloud’s property.
SUPER HEADQUARTER TOP BRAINS How can a headquarter enjoy the title of SUPER? Eye-catching landmarks and all kinds of splendid space? Or thousands of top enterprises being attracted and settled in? They are obvious and definitely what we want but we think, hidden behind and even more essential is-to attract, accommodate and foster TOP BRAINS with unchallenged business intelligence, and to help those brains to make global impact economic decisions. Basing on that our design aims to provide the best field for those TOP BRAIN’s work and relax, stimulating and enlightening, rationality and inspiration.
SUPER CITY COMPOSITE INFRASTRUCTURE When the city grows up higher and therefor becomes a super one, please do not forget that its base always roots into ground deeply. We firmly believe that a super city should be built on super infrastructures which in the future would be most powerful with multi-functions and also would be endowed with much more meanings. Consequently, we are trying to construct an infrastructure group that is able to provide energy, speed, space and also connection at the same time. And all these are aiming to offer a kind of interaction and sharing, with much more capacity, higher speed and also higher efficiency, among the citizens, city and the headquarter.
CLOUD CITY INTERACTION & SHARING The essence of the concept, Cloud, lies on integration and sharing. That is why our design, with large-capacity, efficient integration and effective sharing, is well characterized by Cloud’s property. Besides, the super sky-scraping brains gain the information clusters from all-over the world, and then process and transfer them into policies in reality, which might possibly affect the whole economic trend and benefit all humans as well. No matter outside or inside, up or down, in reality or in virtual sense, physically or just in the space, they all display the Cloud’s property with interaction and sharing

CITY OASIS
China Guilin Mix-use Competition COMPETITION Type: Mix-use Location: Guilin, Guangxi, China Guangxi Province is located in the south-west of China which is famous for its tourism resources. The Competition is commissioned by the local government which the goal is to design a mix-use project in Guilin, to fulfill the future commercial development of the cith while fully making use of the tourism resource within the province. Guilin, the tourism capital, acts more like a transferring hub to allow tourists traveling to their desired destinations rather than a place for tourists to stay and have fun. And therefore we question: what is the solution to transform Yunnan as a city for staying but not a city for passing. This project focuses on : LIFESTYLE, CITY OASIS, SUSTAINABILITY and ENTERTAINMENT FRONTIER
WHAT GUILIN NEEDS:
FUTURE COMMERCIAL COMPLEX In the future, commercial complex is no longer a single building with one types of commercial activities - SHOPPING. It becomes more and more like a theme park, WITH various kinds of cool and exciting, eye-catching activities and programs. It has cultural facilities from gallery to theatre. Commercial facilities should not be only physical stores which are greatly affected by e-commerce nowadays but should provide different experience from eating, drinking, shopping and playing. It should provide city oasis to allow people to relax just like the New York Central Park, while at the same time acting as a place to converge prosperity and urban fashion. It SHOULD defines:
“ONE STEP PROSPERITY, ONE STEP TRANQUILITY
MORE THAN MALL !!! TREND 1 - Commercial area is no longer a self-reclusive place for shopping TREND 2 - Experiencing & Service are the Core TREND 3 - Technology blends in commercial activities TREND 4 - Urban green lands are more and more welcomed TREND 5 - Family as an unit in consumption TREND 6 - Medical Treatment & Health Care become commercial trend TREND 7 - Culture, sports, gaming has higher proportion in commercial activities
