The forest has made the Finns what they are The forests and lakes are central elements for the Finnish state of mind. The forest has shaped Finnish lifestyle and mentality more than any other element of nature. It has provided shelter and the basic necessities for living. In the Winter War, the forests provided Finnish troops a definite upper hand. The forest has also offered the components for spiritual experiences, for spells and rites. Finns have sought comfort from the forest and found a spiritual refuge. The forest has also provided a place to love. For the Finns, the forest has been primarily a place for shelter and tranquillity. The forest has also involved fears, as the forest has been seen to have unpredictable and threatening aspects. Forests were first industrially utilised after the mid-nineteenth century. The timber industry needed timber, which stimulated the use of forests. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the significance of the forests for the country’s economy was regarded as vital.

Although only a few Finns still have firsthand contact with the forest anymore, the forest is regarded as being important and valuable. In addition to the traditional values of the forest, today’s Finn also holds the forest in high esteem due to its environmental values. The forest makes us feel part of nature. THE MAJORITY OF FORESTS ARE PROTECTED Fell Lapland regions, including Levi, Ylläs, Pallas, Muonio and Enontekiö, over half of all forests are excluded from forestry processing. The region is home to a number of protected animals, such as the wolf, otter, lynx, bear, peregrine falcon and golden eagle. There are a number of rare and endangered plant species, including e.g. calypso, moccasin flower, northern moonwort, and a variety of mosses. Veikko Erkkilä

Northern Lights There are plenty of stories and beliefs related to the Northern Lights or aurora borealis in Latin. In Finland, the name Revontuli comes from the beliefs of the indigenous Sámi who thought it was a cosmic firefox that swished its brush over the snow-covered fells whisking them up into the air to appear with the moonlight as northern lights. The folklore traditions of eastern and northern Finland refer to an animal called a firefox using three different words in Finnish, tulikettu, tulikko and tulirepo. It is a mythical animal and was

the ultimate dream of hunters, as it was believed to mark the achievement of one’s lifetime goals, and the capture of such would guarantee fame and fortune. A similar belief relating Northern Lights is shared among the Canadian Indians, although their animal is the moose. Scientifically speaking, the aurora borealis is a light phenomenon originating from the sun and the solar winds of particles. Once these particles hit the Earth’s atmosphere and react with the particles in the atmosphere, they produce light – Northern Lights.

DECEMBER 2021

We are back together in the land of winter and Christmas

The world is partially open and travel is possible, provided that we take into account the conditions to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

We in Lapland have been waiting for foreign visitors and visitors have been waiting to get

to Lapland. In Lapland, we can offer Christmassy nature and a pleasant atmosphere. We have true winter, the Polar Night, freezing temperatures, bright starry skies, snow, and plenty of life hibernating beneath the snow. Do you feel you are in one of the world’s focus points or in

one of the world’s best hiding places? Well, you are actually in both. You are also in a far and remote location, but you are also very safe. Lapland is a joint European region. But here you are also sure to meet people arriving from nations outside the European Union and holding a mutual

understanding. Here in the snowy north, people also experience mutual closeness. We are all enjoying the same activities during the same winter. Nature shows both graciousness and ruthlessness. We all share common winter clothing, skis, snowmobiles, excursion routes and guides,

snowfalls, cold and mild weather, feasts, sauna, entertainment and joint safety. Tourism can be thought as the world’s biggest peace mission. Tourism is free movement and the beneficial interaction of people. Veikko Erkkilä

Santa Claus

(Amanita muscaria) that contains psychoactive substances causing hallucinations. This could well explain why reindeer were occasionally seen flying.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Santa Claus is Finland’s most loved, internationally renowned celebrity. Each year, he brings festive joy and happiness to millions of children and adults alike. People travel from every corner of the globe to greet him, all around the year, not to mention the millions of letters he receives. The legend of Santa Claus dates back to Saint Nicholas from 4th-century modern-day Turkey. He is said to have saved three girls from prostitution by reaching through their window and filling their socks that were drying on the mantlepiece with gold coins. This is where the joy of giving came from, and this Christmas stocking tradition is still used in many cultures. Over the centuries, Santa Claus took on several different forms in different countries; Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, Ded Moroz in Russia, and Father Christmas in the United Kingdom. Santa Claus was made even more popular in the early twentieth century by L. Frank Baum, better known as the creator of the Wizard of Oz. Coca-Cola’s wintertime marketing campaign in the 1930s further popularised the Santa Claus we know today, with his crimson suit and long white beard.

So why is santa claus based in lapland, finland?

Finland has age-old traditions of Nuuttipukki (Knut’s Goat) who was a rather scary man dressed up as a goat and went from one house to the next demanding food and drink, cursing those who were inhospitable. Then there is the Kekripukki (Festival Goat), another goat-like character that was used in festivities to mark the end of the harvest season and the end of the year. Many traditions from these goat characters remain in Finnish Christmas celebrations even today. In Finnish, the name for Santa Claus is Joulupukki,

which literally translated means Christmas Goat. Markus Rautio was a children’s radio presenter working for Finland’s national broadcasting company YLE in the 1920s. He told children a tale of Santa Claus who lived inside Ear Mountain (Korvatunturi), located in the Municipality of Savukoski in Lapland. Since Ear Mountain is located in the border zone with Russia, the only way you can visit Santa’s home is by receiving written permission from the Finnish Border Guard. This made visiting Santa a little too challenging. Then First Lady of the United States of America, Eleanor Roosevelt, visited Rovaniemi on the precise location of the Arctic Circle in 1950. A log cabin was built to receive this important guest to the badly war-torn town of Rovaniemi. The site quickly became a popular destination and was the natural place for Santa Claus to greet guests. The old cabin still stands today in the Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi. Santa Claus is still at the Santa Claus Village and has welcomed millions of tourists, not to mention many world leaders and famous people. Apparently, on his quick visit to Finland a few years ago, President of China, Xi Jinping had a very tight schedule and was forced to choose either meeting the President of Finland or Santa Claus, he chose Santa. This is an excellent example of how Santa Claus is a Global Ambassador of Goodwill, regardless of age, sex, race, nationality, culture, politics, or religion.

The Santa Claus Main Post

Office was later established in the Santa Claus Village. This unique post office has its very own Official Santa Claus Postmark and continues to receive millions

Did you know?

Lapland is home to approximately 200,000 reindeer and around 170,000 people. Every reindeer freely roaming the wilderness is owned and cared for by reindeer herders, making all reindeer in Lapland semi-domestic animals. Before the introduction of roads and motor vehicles, people in Lapland used to travel using reindeer-drawn sleighs.

upon millions of letters from all over the world. Every single letter is opened and read by a large group of Postal Elves. Many of these letters also receive replies from Santa. The Finnish Post Office and Santa Claus have become so popular worldwide that if you post a letter from almost any country in the world with only “Santa Claus” on the envelope, there is a very high chance it will find its way to Lapland. Another reason why Santa is based in Lapland is because of the reindeer. There are very few places in the world where there are reindeer. Lapland is one of these places.

Is Santa real?

Yes! As children grow older, they start to doubt the existence of Santa Claus. Perhaps some of the legends related to Santa may seem somewhat far-fetched as children become wiser, but Santa is very real, you can meet him and talk to him any day of the year here in Lapland. Religions also have tales that may seem unbelievable, nevertheless, people still have faith in their gods – it is the good intentions, happiness, and joy we need to believe in, and that’s why Santa is real. In addition to making visitors happy, Santa Claus helps many charities, including UNICEF. Believing in Santa provides help and puts smiles on the faces of people who need it the most. Santa Claus is largely responsible for the growth of tourism in

Lapland. Without him, you probably would have never even heard of Lapland, let alone enjoyed its magic.

Why did I see another Santa?

If you spotted someone else wearing a Santa Claus costume, this is an Official Santa Claus Helper. Dating back to the times of Nuuttipukki, it is a tradition in Finland for Santa to visit and greet the children in their homes at Christmas, not coming down the chimney in the middle of the night and remaining unseen. Santa Claus is not omnipresent, so he has plenty of helpers! Traditionally, all gifts Santa gives the children are from him and the elves. Family and friends do not give children Christmas gifts in Finland.

Why the flying reindeer? Europe’s last remaining indigenous peoples, the Sámi, traditionally earned their livelihoods through reindeer husbandry, as they still do today. Way back in time, the Sámi shamans used to eat Lapland’s magic mushrooms, called fly agaric

Santa Claus is so official in Lapland that Finland’s Ministry of Trade and Industry issued the Santa Claus Handbook in the 1990s that stipulated rules governing the Santa Claus legend, including a dress code! People used to travel to Rovaniemi on the supersonic Concorde to meet Santa Claus on a day trip. Santa Claus helps the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Finland. Finland celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. A reindeer’s favourite food is not carrots, but a Lappish moss called lichen. Finland holds the record for being the United Nations’ World’s Happiest Nation four years running – could this be something to do with Finland being the Official Home of Santa Claus? Remember to keep being good and have a wonderful stay in Lapland! Peter Culley

Christmas trees have belonged to the Finnish Christmas for a whole century. In Central Europe, Christmas trees were already commonplace in the seventeenth century. In the beginning, Christmas trees decorated the houses of wealthy city-dwelling aristocracy in Finland. In the 1920s, Christmas trees started becoming more common in Finland, and this was also influenced by the Christmas celebrations held in elementary schools. Lapland’s first Christmas tree was in Inari in northern Lapland on Christmas 1883. The person responsible for bringing this Christmas tree to the gold rush lands of Inari was Finnish geophysicist Karl Selim Lemström from the University of Helsinki, who was working with his assistants to study the Northern Lights on an assignment commissioned by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 1882. Lemström was accompanied by his wife and 10-year-old daughter Sigrid.

DECEMBER 2021

Long excitement rewarded by a successful trip Since the beginning of December, buses have once again started taking passengers between Kittilä Airport and Levi, as foreign Christmas travellers have returned to the fell highlands. With the coming of Christmas tourists, Levi is filled with the sight of people in winter overalls, which is especially recognisable with the British. Carl and Heilie Holmes from Sheffield happily walked and pulled their children in the sledge in Levi in the beginning of December. They had been longing to experience snow and finally got right in the middle of it with a week’s holiday in Levi’s snowscapes. The trip to Lapland had been on their minds for the past year, but despite making the booking, the certainty of it happening was left right to the last minute, due to the ever-changing COVID-19 situation. “We decided a year ago that, if the world situation allows, we will be travelling

to Lapland this year to meet Santa Claus. At that time, the idea was still mostly a dream, because the coronavirus situation in England was pretty bad back then. We booked a trip with Inghams, which offered us a few different resort options for our holiday. Levi seemed to be the most attractive, so we decided to choose it. Of course, we were very excitedly waiting for the journey, but until the very last moment it was uncertain whether it will ever happen”, Carl says. Still only a day before departure, the Holmes family was worried if the trip would be cancelled, as news about the new virus variant came just before the holiday. When they finally got to travel, everything went smoothly. Even the flight felt safe. As they had taken two vaccines and the COVID-19 passport was valid, there was not even the need to take coronavirus tests. “We’re spending our holiday here in a cabin in Levi, because we wanted accommodation that is close to nature. This is our fourth day here, and

the trip has definitely met our expectations. We have enjoyed the snow, tried sledging, and we even stayed one night in a glass igloo, expecting to view the Northern

Lights. Unfortunately, we were unlucky, but we are expecting to see the Northern Lights in the nights to come. Fortunately, the weather forecast promises clear nights through to the

end of our holiday. We also have a husky ride ahead, so we have great programmes to experience until the end of the holiday. When we travel home to England, we will have

to take COVID-19 tests and isolate until we have received confirmation that we have not been infected during the trip”, adds the Holmes family. Timo Koivisto

Levi’s downhill skiing services

The ski slopes in Levi provide plenty of entertainment for families and alpine sports stars alike right through to the month of May. The Ski School’s abundant weekly programme has alternatives suitable for children, young people and adults The slopes are wide, extremely well maintained, and you normally do not have to queue for the ski lift either. The best known of the ski slopes is the Levi Black competition ski slope that is used in mid-November for hosting the Alpine World Cup competition. The lit ski slopes provide their own ambiance, as skiing can continue after sunset. The invigorating search for the Northern Lights can also be done on skis in the middle of nature. SKI SCHOOL Ski School is all about learning something new, succeeding, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and sometimes honing of skills to perfection. Best of all, however, is fun and safe time spent together on the

snow instructed by an experienced skiing instructor. In Levi, you can choose from private tuition or group instruction courses, beginner lessons or coaching for more experienced skiing skills. These courses normally have a duration of 90 minutes or three hours. Private tuition is a particularly effective method for learning how to ski or improving existing skills, and it is suitable for people of all ages. The Ski School’s abundant weekly programme has alternatives suitable for children, young people and adults. You will learn something new, meet other skiers, and receive instruction from Finland’s leading professional ski school. For instance, “Downhill Skiing School for children aged 4–6 years” is suitable for the younger members of the family who are able to take

part in a group without their parents. Particularly for beginners and families we recommend the South Point skiing centre located on the southern side of the Levi Fell. The South Point chair lifts are heated and will comfortably take you up to the top of the fell in around five minutes. At the children’s Leevilandia there are safe and covered magic carpet lifts as well as the traditional button lift take skiing beginners to a sufficiently high point, in order for them to safely learn the basics of skiing downhill. You may also see the beginners groups of the Ski School practice here. Leevilandia provides a free-of-charge weekly programme for children, in addition to having a charged childminding service Muksutupa, and you do not even have to make a booking in advance.

Ski lift passes and hire equipment are available from the South Point building located by the lower station of the chairlift. The best way to get to South Point is by using the Ski-Bus service, and the trip only takes around 15 minutes. SKI-BUS MAKES IT EASY Whether you arrive in Levi by plane, car or bus, the best way to get around the area is by using the Ski-Buses. The buses drive two routes and the terminal stops are located right in the centre of the village by the Eturinne slopes, just in front of the Zero Point building. The buses are there to take people between the ski slopes and the largest accommodation establishments. Even going shopping is made much easier using the Ski-Bus services.
