December 5 Betsy Carter We Were Strangers Once On the eve of World War II, Egon Schneider escapes Germany and settling into the unfamiliar rhythms of upper Manhattan, finds solace among a tight-knit group of fellow immigrants, drawn together as much by their differences as by their memories of the world they left behind. An exquisitely moving novel about friendship, love, and redemption, We Were Strangers Once offers keen insights into the 1930’s-era immigrant experience.
and
Carol Zoref Barren Island How does one remember a world that no longer exists? Barren Island is the historically based novel of immigrant families living and working on a forsaken sand bar where New York City’s animal carcasses were rendered into glue and grease from the mid1800s until the mid-1930s. At its center is Marta Eisenstein, who recalls her life in vivid detail and with such heartbreaking honesty that what Marta and her island community experienced stays with the reader long after her tale is finished. 6

January 9 Sana Krasikov The Patriots When the Great Depression hits, Florence Fein leaves Brooklyn for what appears to be a plum job in Moscow—and the promise of love and independence. But once in the Soviet Union, she quickly becomes entangled in a country she can’t escape. A sweeping multigenerational novel about idealism, betrayal, and family secrets set in the U.S. and the Soviet Union, The Patriots is a riveting evocation of the Cold War years, told with brilliant insight and extraordinary skill.
February 6 Brian Platzer Bed-Stuy Is Burning Race, religion, class and politics are a few of the controversial issues tackled in this expertly-paced novel. Aaron, a disgraced rabbi turned Wall Street banker, his journalist girlfriend, and their infant son are among the vanguard of young white families moving into Bedford-Stuyvesant, an historically black neighborhood. After a police shooting of a preteen boy in a nearby park, a riot erupts - with Aaron and his family at its center.

AT THE LEVIS JCC SANDLER CENTER The New York Times Critics’ Pick
This romantic comedy, circumstances both hilarious and tragic, brings together a young Israeli woman, who has little command of English, and a young American man, who has little command of romance. It all begins with Terrence, an inept DHL driver, who loses a critical package in a Virginia parking lot on a snowy Christmas Eve. In a panic, he telephones his Jewish childhood friend for help because the customer he is struggling to deal with is “talking Jewish.” The big reveal near the end establishes that this is a world in which things happen because they were meant to and everything is for the children, maybe even the consummation of long-lost loves.
