Freshers Guide 2016 AUBSU

What does AUBSU do? When you enrol at the Arts University Bournemouth you automatically become a member of the Arts University Bournemouth Students’ Union. The Students’ Union is here to provide advice and information for you and is run democratically by students for students, adhering to the AUBSU constitution.

Who runs AUBSU? The Students’ Union is run by the executive committee, which is made up of two full-time, paid sabbatical officers, the President and Vice President, and, up to 20 part-time unpaid executive committee officers which are positions open to run for annually. This year’s President is Lauren Housego and the Vice President is Ismini Blak. Six indispensable members of staff in the office also support us.

Representation The main purpose of the Students’ Union is to represent and support AUB students - within the University, locally and nationally.

Support and advice AUBSU operates an open door policy and we welcome any questions, queries or comments regarding any aspect of your experience here at AUB. Even if we are not able to help you directly, we will always do our very best to refer you to someone who can. aubsu.co.uk/advice

Course Reps As a Course Rep at the Arts University Bournemouth you will play an important role as a voice of your fellow students; relaying issues, concerns and queries to both course teams and the Students’ Union. As a Course Rep you may also occasionally have the opportunity to discuss specific matters with the University Management Team (UMT). If it is your first time as a Course Rep then you may be unsure about some aspects of the role, and so will probably have some questions – head over to aubsu. co.uk/representation/course-reps to answer some of these and help you to understand how to make the most of the role. As a Course Rep, you will be offered training and support from both the Students’ Union and the University to ensure that you feel as supported as possible in your new position. An initial mandatory induction and training session, which all new Course Reps attend, will set you off on the right foot and also give you the chance to meet other new Course Reps and discuss any questions

Freshers Information Fresher’s week Each year the Students’ Union holds a series of events spread over the first two weeks for new students (and old). Taking part in the wide range of events that take place provides a great chance to meet new people and settle into university life. These two weeks involve a whole range of activities, nights out, live performances and art events. Fresher’s Week also includes the Fresher’s Fayre, which this year will take place on the 19th September on campus. This is

Clubs and Societies University is the perfect time to meet like-minded people, start a new hobby or re-try something old. Our Clubs and Societies are groups run by students for students and there are plenty to choose from to get involved with. Whether you’re a cinephile, LARPer, or want to try Tae Kwon Do you are sure to find something you’ll enjoy. And if you can’t find a pre-made group that you love you can always start your own!

Sports AUBSU asked students what activities they wanted more of and a massive 56% said sports. We’ve put together a huge, new program dedicated to getting AUB students active. We’ve got Social Sport, Competetive Teams, Specialist Courses and our Student-lead SU Sports for you to choose from. And best of all our new Give it a Go programme makes it really easy and cheap for you to get involved! If you’ve ever wanted to try a sport, get fit and active or make new friends AUBSU’s Give it a Go programme can help. All you have to do is buy your Give it a Go term 1 membership for £20 and you can attend as many of our social sports as you like until Christmas (normally £2.50 per session). If you attend just 8 sessions of any sport (or a mix) during the term, you can buy your term 2 & 3 membership for just £10. Give it a Go also offers you cheap access to sports courses. We’re offering massive discounts on 6 week courses in climbing and surfing, each person who books themselves onto a course will automatically get a Give it a Go term 1 membership card for social sports.
