Survivor of Torture live brief

This is a group project with three other young designers, Lewis Son, Josie Mathews, Abbie Smith, & Lily Stansbury. This live brief was published by graphic design agency TEMPLO. Creative director of TEMPLO, Pali, gave us feedback throughout the project along with AUB tutors. I’d like to thank Pali, and the rest of TEMPLO for giving us the opportunity to work on such a project. Survivor of Torture is a genuine charity, and so to work on this small competition live brief was beneficial and stimulating.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

Survivor of Torture initial logo designs

Our group decided to start with some initial design ideas for the Survivor of Torture logo, the logo will then be part of the visual language for the website and refugee pack/ cards. At this point our group decided to go and design our own separate concepts; that way we would then come together and decide on a logo. I took this opportunity to experiment with different logo designs. Alternative Gothic was a font that really stood out for me. I used it because it was contemporary, thick, and bold. To create context, I thought to create a symbol/ logo that would sit either alongside or inside the typography. I thought of visual abstract stimulator that would represent the survivors (e.g. beacon, light, fire, phoenix, hands, full stop glyph, brush strokes, chains, plus symbol).

further initial logo design ideas ‘The breaker of chains’ (quote from Game of Thrones) was something that came from my initial design ideas. I thought that the visual of breaking chains linked well with the charity, and that it would work well as a logo. With the logo I decided to go for Alternative Gothic. I look at other fonts, however I thought that Alternative Gothic was the better font because its thin, bold, contemporary, and matches the demand of the charity. In terms of colour, I thought to go for 90% black with a vibrant orange. The orange will indicate warning, and action, which is what the charity represents; with their call to action. I then created three other designs that would be pitched to the rest of the group. The other designs include the visuals of a torch (to represent fire, power and strength), an eye (to represent experience, and harshness), and a semi colon. The semi-colon essentially separates a sentence into two parts, which could be used to define the separation of the survivor from their torture/past. The symbol also represents moving forward and could be interpreted as overcoming adversity and choosing to move forward.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

initial website design ideas For the website we thought to take one of our logo concepts, and implement it onto a range of website stills. We decided to go for the semicolon design idea, as this concept adds a unique factor to the charity that emphasises on the charities narrative. We decided to stick with my chosen typography and colour, with the lighter addition of a yellow. For the website we needed to figure out what was going to be presented, and so our inspiration pages helped us decide. I noticed that on many of the charity websites, the user needed to read in order to figure out what the charity represents. I used this opportunity to create a website still that would reveal a video on the landing page. This would enhance the narrative, and context, and tell the story a lot quicker. I also designed the stills for further information, such as survivor stories, and about the charity.

Critique recieving feedback from the creative director

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

feedback

We gathered all of our initial design works and pitched our concept to the Creative Director of TEMPLO, Pali. He seemed to really like our concept of the semi colon, as this made our work more unique. However, he did mention that the typography was very similar to Amnesty International. He also thought to mention that its very generic to place the logo on the right, next to the typography; he thought that maybe we should experiment more with integrating the logo into the type. Pali also said that the colour orange is too close to the colour red, which can be seen as blood; which isn’t the positive look that the charity wants to present itself to the audience. The creative director thought to iterate with the semi colon, and how the symbol has great potential, he liked the idea how the semi colon can merge and transform into speech marks, which represent giving the voice back to the survivors.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

semi colon design development

After our critique with Pali, the creative director of TEMPLO, we thought to stick with his comments. We focused on the semi colon, and how this would be integrated into the typography. We experimented with the semi colon, and how it looks with a mixture of different typefaces. We also understood that our chosen typeface was to similar to Amnesty International, which meant we had to change that as well. We experimented with the semi colon acting as a character inside the typography. Further to use playing around with the symbol, we also noticed that the semi colon, looks similar to a person. We thought that this furthers the narrative of the concept. In terms of colour we thought to go lighter with the orange, and keep the colour of the yellow; this steps away from the red (blood) colour and leans more towards a lighter feel.

experiment hand drawing When we were experimenting with the semi colon we realised it looked like a person. We also realised that the design of the person/ semi colon was restraining, we had to keep it within the rules of the semi colon. We came up with the concept of hand-drawing the semi colon, that way we would have more freedom with the design. We then took this opportunity to draw out some semi colons, just to see the variation of styles. Whilst experimenting, we also thought that the semi colon works well as the character ‘i’ within ‘survivors’. We wanted to make it subtle by having the symbol inside the text. It meant that the circle above the ‘i’ matched the design of the semi colon ‘;’. We played around with the design further, and we thought to match the x height of the logo with the typography, to make it subtle to the user.

TEMPLO

refining the finalised logo Once we experimented with a large variety of logo designs (with the semi colon in place) we thought to select one as our final logo. We altered and refined the symbol to fit inside the chosen typography. The symbol was designed in such a way that it looked more like a person then it did as a semi colon; we thought that this would increase the narrative.

* After our feedback, we thought to change up the type to make it more contemporary, so we

changed it from Good headline pro, to Avenir.

‘Survivor’ sitting on top of the smaller type ‘of torture’ shows that there is more emphasis on the survivors, rather of the torture. We also thought to get rid of the capital lettering, as this seemed to shout out to the audience, and so lower caps was more approachable. Getting rid of the capital ‘S’ meant that the only ascender would be the head of the person, which would add further emphasis on the survivors and of the logo.

finalising website designs Once we had our finalised logo, we were ready to create the finalised stills for the website. With the designs we’ve completed, and the imagery we’ve accessed; creating the stills for the website seemed a lot easier then the proccess of the logo. The website will include: - Survivors of Torture video landing page - about the charity - about torture - survivor stories - info-graphic - donation pages In relation to the hand drawn symbol, I thought to carry this aspect across as part of the visual language. Illustrations with this style will be transfered onto the website and flash cards.

We have used large and eye catching images in black and white to work with the colour scheme. We loosely used the illustrative style across some of the pages where we felt it would work but didn’t want to go overboard as keeping it clean/clear and professional is important. We also explored how the symbol and illustrative style can be used in an info graphic as a quick visual way to communicate facts and stats about torture/ survivors and how the charity helps. There would be a section explaining who the charity are and information about them and what they represent. There would also be a section on the survivor’s stories so the user can really understand how these people are feeling and getting on integrating themselves into a completely new place and world.

* The website can also be viewed on iPhone - the logo would just be the symbol when shrunk down.

And then of course, there would be a donate section where the user can donate different selected amounts of money or their own chosen amount. They could also donate in a one-time payment or as a monthly plan. This section also shows the user why they should donate and what their donations go towards.

Flash Cards designing the flash cards for the survivors.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

flash card designs

The flash cards aim to harness our visual language through the illustrative and playful style and our chosen colour orange. We wanted to keep these cards very simple, splitting them into two categories - health and needs. We wanted to include the most important things we felt the survivor would need to communicate such as needing the toilet or feeling unwell. We used an image of a person to communicate these different needs as we felt it would be the best and most relatable way to do it - it also keeps it simple and avoids confusion (e.g using a tampon to represent a period may be confusing as the refugees may have never seen one before).

Survivors pack designing the contents of the survivors pack.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

refugee/ survivors pack

The refugee pack would be provided in a simple draw string bag (cheap and widely available) with a name tag so survivors can distinguish their own bag and easily carry around their items. It would include basic but important items (which can be bought cheaply) such as warm clothes (from charity shops) and a water bottle/insoles for shoes/ a note book for writing with a pen/ a torch as it can get very dark in winter months/ a stress ball to help survivors deal with their PTSD and a blanket so they can keep warm in the winter months. As you can see we have used the stand alone symbol as branding across the products - we felt this would be more appropriate rather than ‘survivor of torture’ as the survivors may not want to be so obviously branded as survivors and keep discrete but the symbol would make the items distinguishable as theirs received from the charity.

evaluation

One of the strenghts of this project was the collaboration; our group worked very well together, and we were very organised. Our group had different abilities and strenghts, which made all of our work come together. The hand drawing element of the work made the project interesting, unique, and artistic. Being able to incorporate this aesthetic into the design was very benifitial to us as well as the project. The overal organisation of the project was very productive; we worked closely at the logo at the begining, and then once we had a design we were able to take that across different platforms. We all created designs for the logo, Abbie’s wacom tablet came to great use once we discovered that we should experiment with hand drawings.

TEMPLO

Survivor of Torture

Josie worked on a bit of everything, from gathering images for the inspiration pages, to working on the presentation slides. I worked on the logo designs, mac stills, and animations. And finally Lily worked closely on the refugee pack and its contents. We came together and brainstormed ideas across the table; this way of working was very productive. After our final presentation, we then went away to further refine our project. For a group of four people, we produced a lot of work, the logo was the longest and most difficult part of the project, as the logo is the effectively the face of the project. The screen/ flash cards/ refugee pack were essential to the project. Overall TEMPLO’s creative director, Pali, seemed to really like our project, and our teamwork.
