Leading Ladies
Female Sale
December 3, 2016 @ 1:00 pm Spruce Grove, Ab
Welcome
Welcome to the 2016 Leading Ladies Event. We are excited to announce the rebirth of this event and plan on making it an annual source of Simmental and Angus genetics. This year we are trying something new, a customer commercial show and sale. Commercial bred heifers from LFE supporters have been invited to partake in a pen show Friday evening followed up with a video sale after the Purebred sale on December 3rd. It has come to our attention over the last number of years that a notable amount of producers are seeking ways to buy and or sell bred females. We would like to be that hub in which you can do both and have access to some of the best cattle from the best producers province wide. This beef industry we all have a love for has definitely undergone another hit. We as producers are in the midst of coming out of another slump in beef prices. The future is again starting to look brighter as we move closer to the new year. This fall has set higher challenges from a weather and condition standpoint. Combines have had to chip away and find narrow windows in the weather to get heavy and in some cases down crops off the field. We hope everyone has enough feed and bedding options to get them through this winter. Looking into the future of this beef market, we feel confident that we are on the rise to better times. We feel the opportunity is now to expand and grow your herds. Whether your pursuing commercial or purebred females, the mentality we share of selling bred heifers is to sell you a proven, fertile product with the opportunity to make a profit one year quicker than with open calves. We would like to thank our partners in this sale. Mark Land and Cattle and Golden Sunset Ranch have committed the top bred heifer’s from their programs to help make this event possible. Leonard and Rhonda source genetics from coast to coast, always improving their herd. They have worked with us for 6 years now and provide a stacked and powerful set of bulls that the beef industry craves.
In the summer of 2015 we had the opportunity to strike a deal with Golden Sunset Ranch on our winter calving red Angus cows. Kyle and Sarah have done a nice job introducing themselves to the red Angus breed. Going forward we are excited to work with the Martins and thrilled about their first consignment of red Angus bred females. Planning this event comes with mixed feelings. Having to part with these bred heifers isn’t easy, our mindset is to sell nothing but our best and we feel this offerng reflects that. The Simmental lots in this sale are stemmed from multi generational cow families. Cow families that have been with us since we started breeding cattle 40 years ago. The Angus division is less in numbers but stacked in quality, again these bred heifers are the first picks from our replacement pen and bred with calving ease and maternal representation in mind. The purebred heifers in this sale are due to start calving near the end of December right through till the 2nd week of February. Each lot has a preg. checked bred date along with the sire of the calf. We would like to thank the commercial producers for their enthusiasm and participation in this sale. It is never easy to ask cattlemen to sell 5 of their best bred heifers. More pens are invited to be added to this list as we move closer to December. The pen of 5 commercial bred female show will take place on the evening of Friday December 2nd. The results of the show will effect the order in which the pens sell on Saturday afternoon. We would also like to thank Marlin Leblanc of R Plus Simmentals for Judging this event. With that being said we encourage anyone with interest to call the in-house numbers or the consulting teams on page 4 for details on the cattle. Once again it is a privilege to work with Bohrson Marketing, Bouchard Livestock and Jim Pulyk. We look forward to seeing everyone on the first weekend of December! Sincerely, The Lewis Farms Crew

We started AI’ing on the 22nd of March, heifers were then all exposed to bulls Apr. 10th, and we pulled bulls on May 12th. If your heifer looks like she isn’t going to calve to the date indicated please don’t hesitate to contact us to see if we possibly have another breeding date on her. Staking claim as Lot 1. An Amber daughter we feel is nothing shy of exceptional. Her phenotype and brood cow design are what we strive to raise. Might be the best Amber we’ve offered since selling her grandam 205T 8 years ago. With over 40 Ambers in production at our place, this route in lineage from 27H to 77C is the best we’ve got. 205T and 150Z are a pleasure to tour and rank the highest in terms of their production and dollars earned. If your in pursuit for a blood red Simmental female that stems from one of the best Red cow families in the business, 77C will fit the bill.

Big topped, wide bellied and a near perfect udder. Her dam, 648Z is a full sibling to the lead off Amber daughters from our 2014 production sale which sold to Westman Land and Cattle and Six Mile Ranch. 54C’s maternal brother is also one of, if not the best LFE Vegas calf we will offer next spring.

Last spring we were excited to acquire the summer walking rights of WFL Westcott. One of the best young red bulls to storm through the Simmental Breed in sometime. We knew it was a necessity for him to access 205T and develop an embryo bank with her. 205T is responsible for lots 1 and 2 as their grandam. Her daughters are forming the next wave off top red cows in our Simmental program and she also has that ability to raise the right kind in the bull pen, LFE Pump Jack was no slouch in that regard. Phenotypically this mating compliments one another at every standpoint. Maternally elite, big cow power, structurally near perfect, and blood red on the dam side. Westcott semen was sold to limited breeders last spring leaving the bull still very exclusive. Progeny of this mating has the ability to be as good as it gets in the red sector of this breed and we are excited to share these embryos with you.

The type of female we cringe about selling. A female that has bull-maker and brood cow look written all over her. A stout one here that is bold sprung and deep, dark cherry red. The type of young matron that historically is the most capable of achieving elite bull calves. 122C’s maternal sister sold in our production sale in 2014 to Skoretz Simmentals. A neat Mountain female here, super attractive in her design. Out of a young, “Stop and Stare,” Amber cow. Mountain daughters are drumming up to be some of the best in the business, and crossed with the Amber cow family never hurts. Look for this female to improve numbers as well, big time MILK and calving ease fixer. Her maternal sib snuck through the ring two fall’s ago to AJ Smith of Czechmate Simmentals. That female had a Reload heifer calf that went on to be selected at Farmfair in the Breeders Select draw, chosen by High Country Services.

Having dam, and granddam still active in our herd, and an additional full sib we have retained, it was only natural to offer 2 of the best in this event. Lots 10 and 11 also have a maternal sib out of Bellagio, purchased in 2014 by Six Mile Ranch. When Jordan and I selected these females back in June, we decided to part with one baldy and 115C was easily the choice. We sold her full sibling last year to Mike Imler of MI Simmentals in the inaugural Checkers event. 115C is so sweet in her type, silky smooth fronted with a shoulder that ties in really nice to her rib cage. This female is sound and long bodied with a perfect blaze, a treat to view from all angles. Her dam, 307N; is one of the good ones, a cow that has had 11 natural calves. LFE Style and lot 15,17,18 in this sale are all grand progeny of 307N, she has bulls working in the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Her dam 227U has produced 7 heifer calves in a row, 2 of them selling in our 2014 and 2011 Leading Ladies events to Westman Land and Cattle and Young Boys Cattle Co. Safe to Cobra at an early date, this mating will be exciting.

Gotham is definitely the out cross sire group in this offering to go after. And 6C is the best representative of the Gotham daughters. Very fresh fronted, character oriented in her head and neck, but very extended in through that front third. Smooth shouldered but offers enough base at her chest. Stout middled but long through her rib cage. She then tails off with a beautiful hip and back leg formation. This female is the complete deal and more importantly emphasizes the type of female we feel we need to raise going forward. Her dam is as likeable as they come and is also a maternal sib to LFE 26A, purchased by WLB Simmentals in the 2014 Leading Ladies event. LFE 26A was the 2nd pick of Knight daughters on offer. Her first calf bred by us, raised by Biglieni’s sold to Semex; Bounty Hunter, he was a Bounty son. 6C is also safe to Bounty at an early date.

We truely value the relationship we have established over the last few years with the Baker family in South Australia. Tom and Lizzy are breed leaders in the Fullblood Simmental game and choose our genetics to help build their Red and Black Simmental program. While importing a large embryo bank from us and aquirring a top black purebred herd, they have made quite a name for themselves and are leading the high seller list both for males and females. Their most recent success lead them to the Supreme Champion title at the 2016 Melbourne Royal show with a direct embryo from us. We are extremely proud of the success they have had with our genetics and if your every in Australia be sure to look them up, Woonallee Simmentals is a great place for a tour!

The powerhouse of the offering. 37C has gained many friends this summer. She’s as square made as they come, smooth in her lines, big boned and strides out on an extremely correct foot. 37C is wide over the top and the amount of rib shape she carries is something to see. The Landslide progeny made a huge impact on our bull sale in the spring by toping the Fullblood section. There are 4 Landslides in the sale and you can see the same pattern and type within each heifer. 37C carries a new and exciting service to Lenny’s new calving ease bull out of the Red Willow Ranch program. She’s just getting started on her path to greatness and we are all excited to see what the future holds for her!

heifer here. She is straight out of the embryo program. 11C had 3 flushmate brother’s in the 2016 Bull Sale, 508C led the pack and was the high seller to Mclaughlin Ag Ventures. Her other brother is none other then Hilton! Early we talked about how valuable the Hilton daughters are going to be with 11X standing behind him and 11C will be no different carrying that same dam. 11X is everything a mother cow should be with her ideal udder structure, mothering ablity and her true ability to be bred differently and still come out with great results. 11C by herself is a standout also in her own right. She hits us with a presence, she is fluent in her movement and is forming an ideal udder for this stage of the game. Her dam has most recently entered our donor program after her production of 17C and her full brother who is a front runner in the 2017 Bull Sale line up. 149Z came to us in dam via the great Sooline Dispersal and her dam 9T is now at the top of our summer program. 17C is carrying an early service to Active Duty, if you want to see what your future may hold with an Active Duty mating check out Lots 59 and 60!

615B comes to as the more refined one out of the Harvestor heifers. She may get over powered by the rest but she carries great cleanliness through out her lines and front end. She carries herself on the big Harvestor foot and bone mass. The udder she is starting form is more then perfect for this stage of the game. Her full sister was the Harvestor daughter we chose to flush in the spring after her production of the 2016 Bull Sale highlight, LFE Reserve Duty 803B. 615B carries an early service to Pulse.

Harvestor throws in the mass and power, Bismark adds the refine front end, typiness and perfect udder type. 5C floats around on an ideal foot type and correctness in structure. Her dam is the first calf of a heifer we brought up directly from the SAV program. They are all members of the world famous Emblynette cow family and are no miss type of females.

Mellow made, sound in her structure and ideal in her type and kind. I’m a huge fan of 631B for her ability to bring so many things to the table in the flesh and on paper. Her dam, 607X is possibly one of our most productive Final Answer daughters, first bull to PEI, second bull was a 3/4 brother to 631B and was a favourite of mine in the 2015 Bull Sale offering, he sold to Burnell Martin of Oyen. 607X then produced 631B, this year she raised a big time South Dakota bull calf and was an easy pick to enter the donor pen in the spring. 631B is bred a touch later to Cartel a bull we are excited to add to the sire line up being out of Syndicate and a Tiger daughter from the Pride cow family.

I’m not sure where to start with 10C because I may not be able to stop! My absolute favourite Angus baby since day one. We knew the Active Duty’s were going to be the direction we wanted to take our calving ease Angus cattle in the first calf crop and 10C is the exact example why. She truly is flawless in her type and no matter who came to look at heifers this summer and fall, they picked her out even if they weren’t Angus breeders. From nose to tail she defines Angus. Natural muscle, length of spine, and depth of rib, all come easy to 10C. She’s straight in her lines and sound in her structure, it’s no secret how fond I am of this heifer and it represents how we are selling our best no doubt. Her mom is a correct made Bismark daughter and truly out produced herself in 10C and 10C is ready to turn up the heat next winter when she lays down and has her first baby.

One of the youngest heifers in the offering, a sweet little package. She was hand bred to our Hamilton bull, HAMI 280C, we questioned him getting her bred so we also AI’d her to Pulse to make sure we had her covered. Either way their both are exciting matings and we will pay to have the DNA done on the calf to verify the correct sire.

Golden Sunset would like to start by saying “Thank You” to our past and future customers for taking time and showing interest in our program. We also appreciate Lewis Farms for allowing us to work with them in bringing you these select bred heifers from our herd. These heifers were selected and bred for easy calving, strong foot, and udder quality. Keep in mind that, when we bred these heifers, there was no plan on selling them. They were to stay in our program, so buy with confidence. We look forward to seeing you sale day. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call. Sincerely, Kyle and Sarah Martin

The choice to sell our Red Angus cows was a hard one but when we knew they were headed to a great home and that we were going to be able to work with Kyle and Sarah to get the bulls back to sell and females we knew it was going to be great for everyone. The GSR program is still in its growing stages but their values match ours and we are excited about the future. 19C comes from an in dam purchase from the Rust Mountain View program. Another program we work close with and are very high on. She is sired by King Kong who ranks in the top 8% of the bred for birth, weaning and yearling weight. Her dam is none other then a direct daughter of both Mulberry and Annie. All things line up pretty well in this mellow made cowy type female.
