WELCOME TO LEWIS FARMS Welcome to the 29th annual event from everyone here involved at Lewis Farms. As we start to see the light at the end of the tunnel in our short but fast paced calving season, we can begin to focus on the event ahead. Calving has gone incredibly well this year, in spite of the wicked weather conditions. The bulls have displayed solid gains and have kept very healthy through this up and down winter. Coming off a strong feeder market this past fall, we continue to see weakening commodity pricing which in turn is elevating feeder cattle to all time highs. Fat cattle are generating record prices with wide margins. The Livestock community is back in high gear. The fall bred market saw great opportunity for producers wanting to expand there herd. Thank you to Leonard and Rhonda Mark for their commitment and passion for the Fullblood sector of our program. As well, to Everygreen Farms, the Kotowich’s who bring forth a solid set of Fullblood bulls. We would not be able to enroll such a power packed, progressive herd bull battery without our partners in these great bulls, thank you to Westman’s, Bieleny’s, Mark’s, Battrum’s, Soo Line, Deeg’s, Packet’s, Johnson’s, Porter’s and Bablitz’s, without your cooperation or confidence our breeding program wouldn’t be where it is today.

ANNUAL BULL SALE

It excites us to see progeny of new herd bulls work so well and have bred so true. Throttle, Springsteen, and Harvestor really come to mind when mentioning an improvement in our offering. The power, and consistency is truly remarkable that these young sires are capable of producing. This 29th offering caters to a vast group of commercial cattlemen. As always we strongly encourage our extra age program for cattlemen wanting to run a higher bull to cow ratio. These extra age bulls are developed slower and are able to endure a longer lasting breeding course. They are calved on grass and raised on mothers milk until fall weaning. Our angus program is primarily built for calving ease with some performance incorporated. Our angus bulls allow ranchers confidence to sleep at night knowing their heifers will calve with ease. A majority of our bulls sell with in $3000 to $5000 price range. We are here to serve the commercial cowmen with high quality bulls at affordable pricing. Purchasing bulls is very important for the direction and production of your cow herd. It is a never ending search for bull power to improve traits. EXPORTING

With regards to exporting bulls out of the country or for testing for admission to stud, Lewis Farms will arrange for all the tests but the cost will be borne by the new owner. This may take up to 3 weeks to get all the test results back.

SEMEN INTEREST

A number of bulls, which will be identified either in the sale catalogue or by sale time, will fall into one of two catagories. These catagories will be, retaining an in herd semen interest or retaining an interest in the bull. You will collect 100% salvage on the bull in all cases. Semen will be collected at the owners convenience and our expense.

Option A: Free delivery will be provided by Lewis Farms to central points in western Canada at the convenience of Lewis Farms, eastern Canada will be cost shared. Option B: Lewis Farms will keep bulls until May 1, 2012 for no charge. Then by that time the bulls will be picked up unless previous arrangements have been made. Lewis Farms insists all bulls be insured or covered with the Lewis Warranty while at Lewis Farms. Option C: Purchasers wishing to pick up their bull/bulls on sale day will receive a $100.00 discount per bull purchased.

COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMERS

VOLUME DISCOUNTS: A minimum of 2 bulls purchased can trigger the volume discount. The discount will start at 2% beginning at $15,000 dollars and will increase by 1% every $10,000 dollars, up to a maximum of 7% on the entire purchase. The discount will only apply to bulls that are paid for in full on sale day. Absentee buyers will have 30 days extension for their discounts. Partnership bulls will not apply.

COLOR TESTING

A number of polled and black bulls have been tested for expression of color. Black bulls can be homozygous black which means progeny will always be black when bred to red cows. If they are carrying the red gene, some calves will be red. If the cows are red or black they are red carriers as well. Any bulls which have been tested for color will be indicated in the catalogue, or announced if homozygous black.

ANGUS EPD’S

The red and black Angus bull EPD's are based on pedigree estimates therefore no accuracies. The red and black Angus cannot be compared against each other because of different EPD bases. (American Angus Assoc. & Red Angus of America compare as if red and black angus are two different breeds.)

Lewis Farm’s manage their cattle with a high level of attention to detail. Attention to detail separates excellent managers from average managers. Lewis Bulls are grown on a total mixed ration composed of corn silage, rolled barley, chopped hay, wheat distillers, water and a custom supplement. The Lewis Farms Bull supplement is custom formulated to fulfill 100% of the nutrient requirements of the bulls. High quality corn silage is the base of the bull ration. Because of the high energy content in the corn silage, less barley is added to the ration. Hay adds “scratch factor” which encourages the bulls to chew their cud. Wheat distillers is an excellent source of natural protein and water is added to reduce sorting. The Lewis Bull ration is highly palatable and is available 24 hours per day. The bulls have the opportunity for exercise as they are managed in large pens. We have had a tough winter, but the bulls have excellent wind protection and are deeply bedded. The 2014 Lewis Bulls are well grown and have easily fleshed. Their hair coats are excellent. The “good times” are here in the beef industry. LEWIS BREEDING SEASON WARRANTY PROGRAM

Lewis Farms guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, a bull that has passed a semen test done by a licensed veterinarian. Should any Lewis bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, unable to physically service a cow or heifer, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. We, however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of Third Party Livestock Insurance or Lewis Farms Breeding Season Warranty on your bulls. Our Warranty Program offers a warranty in a language you can understand. While under our warranty your bull is covered for injury, sickness or death. We will service your needs with another bull, credit or make a cash settlement. COVERAGE - During Breeding Season: In case of loss, Lewis Farms will not be responsible for anything up and above the purchase price of the bull. Options 1 & 2 - cover 100% of the purchase price less salvage value when possible Option 3 - extended season, covers the animal during and after the breeding season. We will be cover 80% of the original value, less salvage when possible. Lewis Farms is responsible to make settlement of an approved warranty claim with a suitable replacement. Exclusions To Warranty Injury or death due to malicious, willful or intentional acts or mistreatment by you or your employees are fraudulent claims.

Management tools, to help control reproductive disease in your herd are: A. Purchase virgin bulls from purebred breeders. B. Keep and maintain a relatively closed herd. C. In subsequent years - absolutely do not rent or purchase mature bulls and cull all open cows. D. Follow good biosecurity measures. E. Vaccinate for the reproductive diseases in your area. BVD and IBR should for sure be vaccinated against and others such as Vibrio, Lepto and Trich depend on your herd situation and geographic area.

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATION

We look at 3 factors: Spermatozoal motility, morphology and scrotal circumference as well as doing a physical exam and watching the bull walk. During collection of semen we closely check the penis and inspect for signs of abnormalities. All bulls sold who exceed one year of age will have been classified as satisfactory in all categories and give us all indications they will go out for you and become a good breeding herd bull. All scrotal measurements will be posted on the supplement sheets. The only components which are not tested are the libido (sex drive) and the bulls ability to breed. This component is up to you, the purchaser. It is absolutely essential to watch your bull on his first few services to make sure successful breeding is occurring. Any problems or concerns with your purchase(s), please direct back to Lewis Farms and we will check into them for you.

POLLED TESTING

A number of the Simmental bulls in the sale have been genetically tested to determine whether they are homozygous polled (will sire all polled calves). When both parents are polled there is a large possibility their offspring are homozygous polled especially if one parent is homozygous polled. The genetic marker has been identified so now with a DNA blood test they can be identified before being sold. The results on bulls tested prior to cataloging for True Polled will be printed with the Lot information. The results will be one of these three: Homozygous Polled, Heterozygous Polled, Inconclusive (unable to determine, quite commonly proved to be Homozygous). As well there are Homozygous Polled bulls marked in the catalogue because we have both parents determined.

HEALTH CARE

Lewis Farms reserves he right to draw semen on any bull sold, for in herd use, at the buyers convenience and our cost.

All bulls to be sold are vaccinated and boostered against: 1. IBR 2. P13 3. BDV (type 1 & 2) 4. BRSV 5. Hemophilus, Mannhaemia, Pasteurella. 6. 8- Way Blackleg, treatment using Ivomec & Safeguard for both internal and external parasites (lice, worms and warbles). In order to promote red meat in Alberta, being of superior quality we give all injections subcutaneously. This is in accordance with the beef quality assurance program and is something which we should all practice in our operations. Most vaccines and antibiotics now are approved for subcutaneous usage. All bulls have been Double Fusogard Vaccinated for footrot. The initial and booster shots will have been given prior to the sale. This comprehensive health program allows our bulls to be as healthy as possible and protected against all the common communicable diseases.

Bull we chose to lead off the sale catalogue. Power Wagon is a herd bull no question, with big time hip shape, width and dimension. Power Wagon has more mass and substance than any yearling on offer. He redefines the word stout. He has been a true standout since birth along side his prolific Edge dam. The Throttle sons in this years offering are arguably the strongest sired group in the sale and we chose Power Wagon to lead the charge. Strong Arm is a true testament to the Throttle offspring. He is in the same league as lot 1 for stoutness, hip and rib shape. It is with no surprise he is structured this way as product of his great Superior dam. She was the lead off Simmental to sell as a calf in the first Headliner Sale at Farmfair to good friends and clients of ours, the Kamieniecki’s of Manning, Ab. We were fortunate enough to keep possession on her and watch her develope into one of our matron cows. Her first calf last year was a Stubby, selling to Westman Farms, and was also used to service many of our own heifers before his delivery date. A personal favourite in this years offering. This bull is complete in every way. In a breed being scrutinized of becoming too moderate in stature, this is a bull that can impact the breed with a notch more frame and add some stretch, while still maintaining and maximizing breed characterists such as stoutnessss, tremendous feet and bone structure. Bundi was another highlight of the 2011 sale and the anchor of our show team in the fall of 2010. His was purchased that year by McMillen Ranching and Ashworth Farm and Ranch. Bundi was our heaviest and biggest performing bull of his year and as an extra bonus was a red carrying son of Superior. His mom, 64P, is ageless to this day and is a cow to build a herd around. We are currently calving out his first daughters and they are flawlessly uddered and great little Momma cows.

It is a great accomplishment to Lewis Farms to have our embryos chosen by the Baker’s to be the foundation of their red and black Simmental program over in Australia. The Baker’s of Woonallee Simmental hold one of the most successful annual bull sales in Australia. Their annual bull sale takes place the beginning of February and this year they will have the second group of bulls from our embryos. We have formed a great friendship with the Baker’s and enjoy discussing up coming matings for our embryo program as well as theirs. They have had great success not only selling our genetics across the sea but showing them as well. Two out of three of the heifers that were crowned champions of their age divisions at the South Australia Jr show were heifers from our embryos. Humdinger went on to be crowned Champion Simmental Bull at Melbourne. He was the first ever, black Simmental bull to claim this title. We look forward to more great results of our embryos at Woonallee Simmentals as their third year group of calves from us are about to hit the ground!
