your mayor and council

Meet your new mayor Lewisham’s new mayor Damien Egan talks about his upbringing, what he loves about Lewisham and why he entered politics

O

n Friday 4 May, Damien Egan was declared the new mayor of Lewisham. At 35 years old, Damien is one of the youngest directly elected mayors in the country. Before he was elected mayor, Damien represented the Lewisham Central ward as a councillor for eight years and was the Council’s cabinet member for housing for four years.

Early life ‘I was born in Cork in Ireland and moved with my family to Bristol when I was young. My childhood wasn’t easy – we went through homelessness twice when I was a teenager. Homelessness touched every part of my life and I remember that I never told anyone at school about it because I was so embarrassed. I would just pretend. You wouldn’t say anything was happening, you’d just put a front on it because it was humiliating. Being made homeless gave me a sense of injustice and a belief that no one should have to go through it. That’s why it was so important to me when I became the Council’s cabinet member for housing in 2014. Moving to Lewisham ‘I came to London to study at St Mary’s University and it wasn’t long before I moved to Lewisham. I wanted to live somewhere that felt like home. I had friends living in the borough, so I’d been here before. ‘Before I became a councillor, I was active in my local community group – the Hither Green Community Association – which did some really good projects. I wanted to be an advocate for my community. ‘Ten years later and I’m still in love with Lewisham. It’s made up of lots of little neighbourhoods, but together we’ve all managed to preserve our identity. I go to other

parts of London and it feels quite sterile. It’s not like that here. Nowhere in Lewisham is dull! ‘That’s the spirit I want Lewisham to maintain. What’s really important is that as we grow, we keep our unique identity and we don’t let the borough become a cluster of chain shops. We want to preserve our independence, our history and our diversity.

Looking to the future ‘As mayor, I want the Council to be more open and transparent. That is why I’ve started the Mayor’s Question Time. I want to open up decision-making and look at how we can have the most democratic form of local government. ‘It’s also important to me that we create more affordable housing and improve our secondary schools. It’s about making Lewisham the best for everybody.’

Lewisham’s directly elected mayor represents the whole borough. Contact him at damien.egan@lewisham.gov.uk or on 020 8314 6193. 4

Stars appeal for school books St John the Baptist CE Primary School in Downham is fundraising to buy books for its first-ever library with the support of Prunella Scales and Timothy West. The veteran actors helped launch the appeal by visiting the school and reciting from Shakespeare and children’s literature, giving pupils a taste of the magic of reading. The children responded with their own readings from Edward Lear and Walter de la Mare. The Alfred and Peggy Harvey

Charitable Trust provided funds to build the new library, but the budget doesn’t stretch to include books. Staff and pupils are hoping to raise at least £15,000 to stock the library. Now the school needs you to donate. Incentives include having your name featured on a library bookplate, invitations to the library launch party and copies of the school poetry book. To make a donation, visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ stjohnbaptistlibrarybooks.

Campaign gains trains A group of local bus and train users has won their campaign for more Thameslink services from Bellingham, Catford and Crofton Park stations. The Crofton Park Transport Users’ Group found that passenger numbers had increased by 36% over the last four years, but there were fewer trains running than in the 1950s, dropping from 62 trains a day to 39. Their campaign, A Cinderella Line, got support from almost 3,000 local residents. From May, thanks to the campaign, the service was doubled to four trains an hour during peak times. Read about the campaign at www.acinderellaline.com.

Swiftly does it! Special bird boxes have been installed for swifts to nest in at homes on Wynell Road in Forest Hill and the new Dacre Park South development in Lee, with the London Fire Brigade lending an engine to install the boxes high up on the buildings. The campaign to install the bird boxes was supported by Lewisham Homes, Lewisham Council and local conservation group Lewisham Swifts. The boxes were installed after the discovery of the borough’s largestknown swift colony in Burnt Ash Road in Lee during roofing works by Lewisham Homes and the Breyer Group. The builders removed some of scaffolding so the swifts’ flight paths and nests weren’t obstructed, and construction work only continued when the young birds had fledged and flown the nests. They left special gaps in the eaves so the swifts can return to the homes each year. To find out how to install your own bird box, or to report swift sightings, email Lewisham Swifts at lewishamswifts@gmail.com.

Discover the history of the heath Take a stroll across Blackheath and step into its past with new storyboards that mark the spots where key historical events happened. The seven storyboards have maps which direct you to places of historical interest and old photographs which show how the heath used to look. You can also read about ecological issues and wildlife in each area. The three-year project to produce the storyboards was led by the Blackheath Society. To find out more visit www.blackheath.org.

Remember loved ones A memorial service will be held on Sunday 1 July at Hither Green Crematorium. The annual service is held to remember loved ones who have passed away and everyone is welcome. The service, which is led by representatives of the borough’s churches, lasts for around 45 minutes and includes hymns. For more information call 020 8314 9640.

A new mayoress for Lewisham Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, has appointed Liane Segal as the new mayoress of Lewisham. Liane is a longstanding campaigner against anti-Semitism and racism and runs activities for older residents in the borough. In 1939, when she was just seven years old, Liane fled her home in Vienna with the Kindertransport to escape the Nazis. After settling in Britain, she went to Sydenham School and

later worked as a clothes designer and had three children. Liane said, ‘I am honoured Damien invited me to be his mayoress of Lewisham. Lewisham is stronger because of our history of welcoming residents from all corners of the world. In 1939 I escaped from the horrors of Austria and was taken in by a family in Wigan. I hope that by sharing my story, others will see it is as important as ever to provide sanctuary for people fleeing persecution.’

Water refreshing idea Help save the environment and quench your thirst this summer by filling up your water bottle, free of charge, at refill stations across the borough. Lewisham is one of five London locations piloting a new scheme called Refill London, which is backed by Thames Water and Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London. The Lewisham campaign is run by Lewisham Local

and Business in the Community. In the UK about 800 plastic bottles are thrown away every minute. At the current rate, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050. Refill London aims to reduce plastic waste by offering free tap water refills to passers-by. Participating businesses will put a sticker in their window to let people know they are a refill station.

Schoolchildren demand a brake Children from Lewisham primary schools took part in a poster competition to raise awareness of the borough’s 20mph speed limit, which has been in place since 2016. Poppy Hepburn from Stillness Infant School in Crofton Park won the competition, and her winning design (pictured right) will be used to spread awareness of the speed limit throughout the borough. Runners up included Chi Chi from Eliot Bank Primary School in Sydenham and Kroby Igoh from St William of York Catholic Primary School in Forest Hill. The 20mph speed limit applies to all roads in the borough except for red routes, private roads and roads in housing estates. To find out more visit www.lewisham.gov.uk/20mph.

Little Nan’s Broadway Theatre Saloon in Catford, the Fox and Firkin pub in Lewisham, and New Cross Learning are just some of the organisations where you can get your bottle refilled. If you want to offer free tap water, visit www.lewishamlocal.com/ refilllondon. To download the Refill app for a full list of refill stations, visit www.refill.org.uk.

Mumpreneur wins #WOW award Sara Tateno, a mum of two from Forest Hill, has won a Women on Wednesday (#WOW) award. The awards – for outstanding female entrepreneurs – are run by Jacqueline Gold, the founder of Ann Summers, who selects all winners. Sara’s winning venture is a successful online platform called Happity, which helps new parents find baby and toddler groups near them. You can search by postcode, date and the age of your child to find relevant events and activities, with venues marked on a map to help you find them. 10

Sara spotted a gap in the market when she was facing redundancy three years ago. She was looking for

activities for her two-year-old son, but couldn’t find any online listings. Keen to avoid being a stay-at-home mum, Sara learned to code and set about developing her innovative app. Last year, Sara received £40,000 investment from a technology startup programme. She launched the platform in Lewisham and it has already expanded to serve much of south London, with nearly 40,000 users. Soon she hopes to launch the site London-wide. Prendergast Vale’s Ofsted success In a recent inspection, Ofsted judged Prendergast Vale School in Lewisham town centre to be good with outstanding early years provision. Inspectors highlighted the strong governance of the school, saying that governors are ‘highly ambitious for pupils and very active in driving

improvements in standards’. They also praised new systems the school introduced which are ‘having a rapid, positive impact in many areas’. Parents and pupil feedback – which is part of the inspection process – spoke highly of the early years provision and pupils said they felt safe and well looked after.

Headteacher Duncan Kamya said, ‘This report reflects what’s going on in the school now and effectively endorses and encourages the improvements we are continuing to implement to take us to an even higher level.’ You can read the full inspection report at www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Ellie (pictured left) knits four hats a day at a weekly knitting club in her communal lounge, and she’s recently started making little cardigans too. Once she’s made a batch, Ellie sends them to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Lewisham Hospital, which looks after premature and unwell new-born babies. After receiving the first set of hats in April, the NICU sent her a thank you note. Ellie says, ‘It gives me a really nice feeling to know I am making a difference in my community.’

sugar smart

Get smart abou In Lewisham, we eat too much sugar. Two in five children are overweight or obese by the time they start secondary school, and tooth decay and type 2 diabetes are increasing We speak to three organisations in the borough who have joined the Sugar Smart Lewisham campaign to help tackle the problem.

Tell us a bit about your organisation Jenny Couper, New Cross Gate Trust I’m the strategy and partnerships manager at the New Cross Gate Trust. We’re a community charity which helps people to lead happy, healthy and fulfilled lives. We offer activities including community walks, gardening and sewing clubs, and a self-help depression group. Our stay-and-play sessions for under-fives also encourage children to get active and play outside. Franco Bertocchi, La Pizzeria Italiana I run La Pizzeria Italiana in Catford, which has been open since May 1986. I was a customer for 15 years but I took it over five years ago and now it’s a family business. Shirley Kirkland, Lee Green Lives I’m the coordinator for Lee Green Lives, a small charity set up by and for people in Lee Green. We promote social inclusion to help improve health and wellbeing in the local community. 16

Lewisham Life summer 2018

What sort of food and drink do you offer? Jenny: Until we joined Sugar Smart, we had tea and biscuits widely available to people who come to the centre. Now we restrict biscuit-eating to volunteers who’ve been working hard in the garden. Franco: We offer traditional Italian food and cook everything from fresh. The tomato soup can take three or four hours. Our fish is one of the most popular dishes. We recently won a Time Out award for the Most-Loved Local Restaurant in Catford, voted for by customers. Shirley: Lee Green Lives is known as a place where people can drop in and have a cuppa and a biscuit. In the past we had a lot of sugar-heavy biscuits and people often brought in unhealthy snacks and cakes. We are getting more aware that we need to provide healthier alternatives and further develop cookery clubs and opportunities for exercise to keep older people mobile.

Why did you sign up to Sugar Smart? Jenny: Sugar is incredibly addictive and is cheap and easy to get. Often people don’t realise how much sugar is hidden in many everyday

foods. This is contributing to more cases of obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. We think it’s important to help raise awareness about sugar and the risks it presents. Signing up to Sugar Smart shows that we are committed to making a difference and supporting our community to make small changes. www.lewisham.gov.uk

Win Jamie Oliver goodies If you live in the borough, you can support the campaign by: l l obbying the government to regulate advertising and supermarket promotions of high-sugar products lw riting to restaurants, shops and organisations to tell them about the campaign. If you sign up to support the campaign by 1 October, you can enter a prize draw to win: l£ 200 of Jamie’s Italian restaurant vouchers la signed copy of Jamie’s book, 5 Ingredients – Quick & Easy Food. Sign up at www.lewisham.gov.uk/ sugarsmartresident.

Shirley Kirkland

Franco: There’s a lot of talk about sugar at the moment. We get lots of families coming with children, so we want to offer less sugary drinks. It’s a problem that cheap, fried food and sugary drinks are so freely available. Shirley: We have many service users who need help to lower their sugar intake. Lots of them shop www.lewisham.gov.uk

in the area and let each other know about bargains and multi-buy deals they’ve found on foods that are often unhealthy.

What changes have you made since joining Sugar Smart? Jenny: Apart from cutting down on biscuits, we have introduced new activities, such as our walking group. We recently installed a new water fountain in the garden and we signed up to Refill, an app which lets people know where they can fill up their water bottle free of charge. We have also promoted NHS initiatives, like free milk and vitamin D vouchers. We share more information about sugar on our website and social media feeds, and have a regular slot for articles about health in our newsletters. Behaviour change takes time.

Overall, people have been very supportive of the changes, although our gardeners still need something to satisfy them after an afternoon of hard work! Personally, I’m less tempted to dip into the biscuit tin when I have a sugar low in the afternoon, and I’m taking more fruit into work. Franco: We didn’t have to make huge changes as we already used fresh, healthy ingredients, but we serve more sugar-free drinks now, like Coke Zero and Diet Coke. We’ve definitely seen an increase in the number of people switching to Coke Zero. Last year hardly anyone was asking for it. I had to stock up this morning as we’d run out! Shirley: We now offer a range of herbal teas, as well as low-sugar biscuits and fruit and nuts instead of sugary snacks. Lewisham Life summer 2018

Health and Care Partners in Lewisham are working together to support people to maintain and improve their physical and mental wellbeing, to live independently and to have access to high quality care when needed.

Prescribing in Lewisham is changing

W

e want to help people lead longer, healthier and happier lives. Selfcare is about avoiding becoming ill and seeking help when needed. By promoting self-care and reducing unnecessary demand on GP and practice nurse time, we believe this will free up time for people who have more complex healthcare needs and who need more active support in managing their health. In line with national guidance from NHS England, GPs in Lewisham will no longer routinely prescribe medicines for minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, dry skin, upset tummies and minor cuts which normally get better in time. Your local pharmacist can support you to self-care with advice on treatments, minor illnesses and provide reassurance. If your problem needs the attention of a GP, your pharmacist is trained to recognise this and will advise you to see your GP.

These self-care medicines will no longer be routinely prescribed: cne creams A l Anti-diarrhoeal medication for short-term use (up to 72 hours) l Anti-fungal treatment for short term minor illnesses l Antiperspirants l Cold sore treatment l Colic treatment l Cough and cold remedies l Camouflage creams l Ear wax removers l Eye drops for short term use and minor illnesses l Hay fever treatments l Head lice and scabies treatment l Herbal and complimentary supplements l Homeopathic preparations l Indigestion remedies for minor illness or short-term use l

L axatives for short-term use (up to 72 hours) l Mouthwashes and mouth ulcer treatment l Nappy rash cream l Painkillers for short-term use l Haemorrhoidal (piles) preparations for short term use (5–7 days) l Rubefacients (creams and ointments which increase blood flow to treat pain) l Sun creams l Threadworm treatment l Topical steroids for short-term use (up to a week) for bites, stings or mild dermatitis l Vitamins (excluding: folic acid (folate), vitamins D and B12) l Warts and verruca treatment l

Hay fever As the weather gets warmer and the heat rises, the summer months can be a difficult time for hay fever sufferers. It is usually worse when the weather is humid and windy as this is when the pollen count is at its highest.

Symptoms include: s neezing and coughing a runny or blocked nose l itchy, red or watery eyes l itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears l loss of smell l pain around your temples and forehead l headache l earache l feeling tired. l l

Asthma sufferers may have additional symptoms such as a tight feeling in the chest, getting short of breath and wheezing and coughing. There are lots of things you can do to ease hay fever symptoms, such as: l put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen l wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting into your eyes

www.lewisham.gov.uk

shower and change your clothes after you’ve been outside to wash pollen off l stay indoors whenever possible l keep windows and doors shut as much as possible l vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth l buy a pollen filter for the air vents in your car and a vacuum cleaner with a special HEPA filter. l

You should avoid doing the following: l cut grass or walk on grass l spend too much time outside l keep fresh flowers in the house l smoke or be around smoke – it makes your symptoms worse l dry clothes outside – they can catch pollen l let pets into the house if possible – they can carry pollen indoors. Your local pharmacist can give advice and suggest the best treatments, like antihistamine drops, tablets or nasal sprays. But if your symptoms get worse, or they do not improve after taking medicines, you should go and see your GP.

Living well with

DEMENTIA According to the Alzheimer’s Society, 850,000 people in the UK live with dementia. We hear from two residents about their experience of dementia and the support they get from Lewisham MindCare

Dinah Griffiths, 71, Catford I was diagnosed with vascular dementia about a year ago. When my symptoms started, I got lost around Lewisham station and it was really frightening. A lovely young man got me on a bus and stayed with me until I was five minutes from home. I was an educational psychologist and the chair of governors at Childeric Primary School in New Cross. I missed several meetings at school, which was unlike me, so I began to think something was wrong. I loved the job and it’s one of the things I found difficult because I miss the children. People say I could still do something with children, but I can’t if halfway through I forget their name or what we’re talking about. I read about Lewisham MindCare in a magazine and I just rang up the office. Since

then, I’ve had lots of support from Laura and her colleagues. I’m part of a reading group at MindCare where we read poetry and short stories and talk about them. It’s one of the things that has really held me together. It’s a lovely group with some real characters. MindCare has helped me to get a memo minder, a piece of technology that reminds me to take my keys whenever I open the door. You can programme it to do other things, like remind you to go shopping. It’s important to see it as a tool and not as something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. When I was first diagnosed, it just felt like darkness. I wanted to do things on my own without anyone’s help, but you can’t do that with dementia. I used to drive everywhere but I’ve realised it’s just not safe for me to drive anymore. It’s kind of a relief to

be realistic about it and to not pretend. My cousin is now my power of attorney. I didn’t like the idea at first, but it makes sense to have someone who can make decisions if you become unable to. When you have dementia, you have to resist the temptation to go to bed and pull the duvet over your head. I want to hold on to things like the reading group and new friendships. I just want to keep going.

For more information about dementia, contact the Alzheimer’s Society at www.alzheimers.org.uk or the Dementia Action Alliance at www.dementiaaction.org.uk. 20

Sheila Cooper, 85, Sydenham Laura Saksena, Dementia Adviser, Lewisham MindCare I used to work at Age UK helping older people access support in the community. I met a lot of people who had dementia there. My grandfather had dementia and I was involved in his care, so there’s a personal element for me. I support a lot of people with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s. The youngest person I’ve worked with is 57 and the oldest nearly 100. The thing with dementia is that people can have it for a very long time and only get diagnosed when they’re quite advanced. People say forgetting things is part of ageing, and it’s true you can get forgetful as you age, but that’s very different from the kind of symptoms you get with dementia. The important thing is to seek help as early as possible.

Get help for dementia If you’re worried about dementia you should talk to your GP. If you’ve had a dementia diagnosis, your GP can refer you to Lewisham MindCare or you can refer yourself. Services at MindCare are free for people who have a dementia diagnosis and live in the borough. MindCare runs free training for carers, friends or family members looking after someone with dementia who lives in the borough.

I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years ago. It was a shock and hard to get used to at first. Telling your family is the most important thing. Once they’ve accepted it, you start to accept it. One of the first things you notice is you start to make mistakes. Every month I used to pay £300 rent at the post office. One time the man behind the counter said I’d given him £600. Even now, five years on, I swear I’d counted out £300. I knew I had to watch what I was doing. Sometimes you forget what day it is and miss appointments, so you need to have a plan to manage the condition. Every morning I look at my calendar to see what I’ve got to do. I have routines that I stick to every week, which could include doctor’s, hospital or family appointments. I play Bingo once a week and go shopping – I like to get out and do things. There’s lots going on in the sheltered housing scheme where I live and there’s always someone to chat to. I don’t understand people who sit indoors and do nothing – if you’ve got Alzheimer’s you’ve got to keep your mind going.

I’ve had so much support from Lewisham MindCare. Your adviser builds a relationship with you and helps you organise things in your life that you may not have thought about. They also help you to join clubs to keep you active. I actually became a member of Lewisham MindCare’s advocacy group. We visit places, like Glass Mill Leisure Centre, that want to become dementia friendly and improve their facilities for people with dementia. I’ve also been asked to speak to different groups and to medical professionals at Barts NHS Trust about what it’s like to live with dementia. I was even interviewed on ITV News London to raise awareness about the importance of staying active with dementia.

YOUNG The school holidays are almost here and there’ll be lots of free activities for young people in the borough. We visited two youth clubs and an adventure playground, all run by Youth First, to find out what’s on offer

Ladywell Adventure Playground turns 10 this year. At the playground, you’ll find a huge wooden outdoor play structure with rope swings and bridges. There’s also a sandpit, outdoor theatre space and vegetable garden. Inside, there are more activities including table tennis, pool and film screenings. Adam, 13, says, ‘There are lots of different things to do here. But what I like best is meeting other young people.’ Billy James, 15, is a regular visitor to the playground. ‘I come every day – I guess I should pay rent!’ Despite beating everyone at pool, 12-year-old Kenzi has made a lot of friends since he started coming to the playground. ‘I think it’s really good that there are places like this,’ he says. ‘It stops kids getting into violence and gives them positive things to do.’

Coming here is a good way to build your social skills Riverside is the second largest of Youth First’s youth clubs, with three floors that include a music studio, games room, movie lounge and kitchen. There’s also a hall for sports, dance and theatre. ‘We get to decide what activities we do,’ explains 12-year-old Jasmine. ‘We fundraise to pay for some of them, like making and selling cupcakes.’ Lexie, eight, and Stevie, nine, are best friends. They both love the street dance sessions and gymnastics. ‘I like doing back bends, cartwheels and handstands,’ says Stevie. Millie, 16, has been coming to Riverside for five years. ‘There have been a lot of good changes since then. I think more young people are coming because there are more activities that suit different ages. Coming here is a good way to build your social skills and you can socialise with people you never thought you would. It’s a really good experience.’

I can’t wait for the summer holidays TNG is an award-winning youth club in Sydenham. It boasts a climbing wall, café, music recording studio, a dance and performance room, and indoor and outdoor sports. Jessica, 16, who helps run TNG’s tuck shop, says, ‘I like making music in the studio and playing football outside. It’s a safe place here and it keeps young people off the streets.’ Eleven-year-old Ty’s favourite activity is table tennis. ‘I’ve beaten everyone here, except Sean the coach. I can’t wait for the summer holidays. I’ll be here almost every day. I think young people should come here because we have sports, graffiti and lots of other stuff they can enjoy.’
