IN THE NEWS We’re proud of the way our students and staff go ‘over and above’ to achieve great things – both within the College and in the outside world. Here’s a brief snapshot of what they’ve been up to lately.
Top places for performing arts students Our drama and dance courses have an incredible record for helping students to progress on to university – and this year’s talented Level 3 students are no exception. Eight drama students have beaten stiff competition to win places at leading universities and drama schools, while eight dance students have gained places at some of the country’s most elite dance schools, conservatoires and universities – with many students getting multiple offers! Among others, they have won places at LAMDA, the Royal School of Speech and Drama, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and Bird College.

Getting the inside track on construction Our female construction students saw just what it takes to succeed in the industry when they went on a site visit to a prestigious new central London development being carried out by contractor Multiplex.
A taste of Italy The chance to visit another country and learn about its cuisine from professionals is a dream for any aspiring chef, so when 11 catering students from the College were invited to spend two weeks in Italy on a work placement, they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The students immersed themselves in every aspect of Italian cookery, enjoying a gastronomic tour of Venice before they got ‘down to work’, joining Italian students in traditional working kitchens and learning how to make delicacies such as Sacha Torte and plaice Millanaise.
Organised in partnership with Women into Construction (WIC), the visit gave learners an amazing insight into the extension and modernisation of 5-7 St Helen’s Place EC3, which is a highly challenging project within a conservation area in the City of London.
Bright future for fashion finalist Talented fashion student Natalie Brotherton was named as a finalist in the Fashion Awareness Direct (FAD) Fashion Futures competition – and got to show her stunning designs in front of 300 guests at London Fashion Week. Judged by industry experts including May Martin of BBC’s ‘Great British Sewing Bee’ and Asos Womenswear Design Director Vanessa Spence, the competition challenged students from across London to create garments inspired by Indian streetwear.

NUS Extra Card The NUS Extra Card gives students access to over 200 exclusive discounts with a range of beauty, entertainment, eating out, music and travel brands. You can sign up for an NUS Extra Card, which costs £12, at the NUS website (nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra/).

APPRENTICESHIPS An apprenticeship is an ideal way to get out into the world of work, earning a real wage while studying – and there’s never been a better time to start one. The new Apprenticeship Levy, introduced by the government in May 2017, is great news if you’re thinking about doing an apprenticeship because it means that larger employers are investing more in their apprentices’ training and seeing them as a vital part of their staff.
We offer a wide range of apprenticeships in:

CASE STUDY: AWAL KHAN For Awal Khan, two years spent studying IT at Lewisham Southwark College has led to Higher Education and entrepreneurial success – with further study at Masters level now in his sights! After his BTEC Level 1 and BTEC Diploma in IT at the College, Awal progressed on to a BSc in Computing at London South Bank University. He’s now looking for a graduate job but has meanwhile used his initiative to kick-start his career in programming. “I’ve used my skills and knowledge to work on my own project, building an app called Lapizzeria,” he explains. “It’s a food app which allows users to place food orders online, make payments and request delivery or collection.”
Looking back at his time at the College, Awal says: “The teachers and staff were always warm, welcoming and inspirational. I received a lot of technical support and benefited from great resources, and I gained skills in IT, numeracy and communications. The College’s encouragement led me to get the highest grade in my Level 1 course, which is something I never thought I could achieve.” He adds: “I plan to study for my Masters in the next couple of years, but before that I’m looking for a graduate job in my field. My aspiration is to be a programmer or software developer, and to work in a well-respected company.” “Lewisham Southwark College was the starting point that led me to achieve my lifetime ambitions.”

IELTS AND CELTA IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the leading international test for English language proficiency, recognised by universities and employers, professional registration bodies, immigration authorities and governments around the world. Most universities in the UK need a 6.0 or 6.5 grading for all students who want to study at university. We offer a wide range of courses that can help you get up to that standard in time for the beginning of the new term.
Academic Writing Workshop – a small group course that enables students to benefit from individual attention as they improve their writing skills. (Evening.) IELTS Practice Speaking Test – an opportunity for candidates planning to take the IELTS to experience a mock speaking test, and to receive a one-toone session of feedback and advice. The sessions last 25 minutes. (Evening.)
IELTS Summer Intensive - for candidates who want to improve their language skills and develop strategies that will help them achieve the score they need on the IELTS tests. Courses begin every two weeks in the summer. Each course uses different content, so if you need a longer period of study, you can take more than one course.
Cambridge English - Advanced (CAE) & Cambridge English: First (FCE). These courses are for students who want to take a high-quality, globally recognised English language test, demonstrating an advanced or strong intermediate level of English for study, work and life in an English-speaking environment. There is emphasis on accuracy of grammar and vocabulary as well as the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
IELTS Preparation and Practice – for candidates who need language development as well as test awareness and strategies. (Daytime and evening.)
General English courses - These courses are for non-native English speakers (EU and worldwide) who want to improve their English language.
