INSPIRING TEACHING AND LEARNING We’re passionate about encouraging and motivating our students, whatever their course and wherever they are in their learning journey. That’s why we’re continuously striving to inspire the next generation with engaging learning methods, interesting lessons and high quality teachers.

Our students don’t just sit behind a desk to learn. The College is an interactive environment where students have conversations and debate with their teachers, who they call by their first names. The opportunity for work experience adds another dimension, allowing students to use their new skills in the real world. In subjects such as construction, dance, sport and floristry, our carefully structured training enables learners to progress very quickly – just a few months after starting your course, you won’t believe how far you’ve come! Whether you’re studying in order to find a job, change your career or head off to university, our highly experienced teachers

will support you to achieve your goal. Unlike in schools, most of our teachers have industry experience as well as teaching expertise – so they know what it’s like in the real world. Work experience opportunities and master-classes see students visiting and working at inspirational companies such as Barclaycard, British Airways and the Southbank Centre. Since many of our students dream of running their own businesses in the longterm, we also engage with lots of SMEs (Small and Mediumsized Enterprises). Getting first-hand experience of these businesses really shows students what it takes to be successful.

SO WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE TAUGHT AT LEWISHAM SOUTHWARK COLLEGE? When you join the College, you become part of our community. In exchange for your hard work, we will make sure that you’re supported every step of the way and have all the tools you need to succeed.

In their feedback, our students tell us that the College environment is supportive, friendly and informal but professional. They feel they’re really making progress and moving forward. Across our departments, we have some of the latest technology – so you’ll be learning with tools that are used in the workplace. This means that you’ll be attractive to employers and ready to hit the ground running when you land that first job.

out of your time at College. As well as enrichment activities and clubs and societies, a range of services including learning support, professional advice and guidance, and English & maths assistance are always available if you need them. Visit pages 46-49 for more information.

CASE STUDY: STUDY PROGRAMMES HENRIETTA IMOREH Alumna Henrietta Imoreh, 21 and currently living in Balham, studied with us for three years from 2010 to 2013. She completed her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts and re-took GCSE English at Lewisham Southwark College. “I’d been in care from a young age and, whilst studying at Lewisham Southwark College, lived in a hostel with others in care. I experienced a lot of personal issues in my past, and used to not feel safe. So coming to College was good for me, as it was a secure environment and I found that studying drama gave me an escape from other things going on.

Since completing the placement, I’ve been offered a graduate job there once I’ve finished my studies. I’m so happy that my work has been recognised and that I know I’ve got a job before I’ve even finished university! “I feel like my experiences have offered me a background to help others, and my course and the College have given me the skills to work in something I’m passionate about. I have my own flat in Balham and I’m in a much happier place now that I’m making my own way in the world.”

“I’m now studying BA (Hons) Drama and Theatre in Education at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. And I’ve completed a work placement with The Big House Theatre Company who help NEETs, between the ages of 16-25, with Life Skills courses over four weeks.

CASE STUDY: APPRENTICESHIP BOBBY PACKHAM Level 2 apprentice in Technical Theatre support, Lighting and AV - Bobby Packham - is currently working for the Southbank Centre. “I’d previously thought about working in the field of live music in a technical role, but couldn’t see an obvious career path apart from going to university. “I applied for this apprenticeship at Southbank because it was a way into this field, and related fields, and would give me not only hands-on experience but also an insight into the industry. This will then allow me to make an informed choice at the end about whether I’d like to continue working in this environment.

I’m only three months into my one-year apprenticeship, and have learnt a lot in that time. The more I work, the more comfortable and confident I feel in my role.

HIGHER EDUCATION

We think our London location is a big advantage for our students. Not only are you close to numerous businesses, facilities and potential work experience opportunities, but our campuses are spread out over three commutable spots in the city.

Lewisham Southwark College is a long-standing provider of higher education (HE). Our friendly environment, inspiring teachers and choice of courses will help you to enjoy a varied and engaging study programme during your time with us.

Whichever campus you choose to study at, we’re here to help you gain the qualification you need. Get in touch to find out about the great programmes you can study, and the most suitable progression route for you.

Why study HE courses at Lewisham Southwark College? We will give you a fantastic overall study package. Here are some of the ways we do this: Our fees are 45% less than universities We offer a much higher ratio of tutor to student teaching, with smaller class sizes You can either gain a shorter HE qualification and then go on to seek a job, or continue to a ‘top up’ third year, gaining a full degree We offer fantastic new facilities at our Southwark campus

42

lesoco.ac.uk

Let our wonderful staff nurture your abilities and share their expertise.

Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas We’re pleased to offer exciting Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) options. Generally, HNCs take one year to complete, whereas HNDs last two years. Both are full, vocational HE qualifications, and have a strong focus on practical, career-focused, hands-on programmes provided by tutors with industry experience. These courses are ideal if you want to find a job or progress quickly within the workplace, and are especially useful if you don’t need a full degree to do this.

Foundation degrees This HE-level qualification combines academic study with practical experience of how it applies in the ‘real world’. You might think of a foundation degree as a type of ‘mini degree’ in that it enables you to gain the fundamental knowledge of the subject matter you’re examining. A foundation degree typically takes two years to complete full-time (but it can sometimes be taken part-time), and is the equivalent of two-thirds of an honours degree. If you want to gain the full degree, you can obtain this through further study.

‘Access to higher education’ options These programmes act as a stepping stone to commencing a HE qualification. Completion of an access course can then be followed by HE study. Our access qualifications are very popular with those who have been out of education for a while.

Further support If you’d like further information about HE qualifications, we have a panel of expert advisers who’d love to discuss the subject further with you. We can provide you with invaluable advice to help your future prospects, so do get in touch if you have any questions.

ABOUT LOANS If you study a Foundation Degree, HND or HNC you’re eligible to apply for a student loan from the Government. Find out more at: gov.uk/student-finance/ You won’t begin repayments until you earn at least £21,000 pa

ONLINE COURSES We’ve recently launched new online courses aimed at students who are looking either to change career or gain further qualifications as part of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Learning online can be a fantastic, flexible option because it allows you to study at your own pace, and at your own convenience – fitting it around working or other commitments. However, it does require you to be disciplined in your time management. We don’t expect you to do it all alone though. Once your course is paid for, you will be allocated an Online Tutor who will be available to answer any questions you have.

96

lesoco.ac.uk

Some of our courses can be completed solely online, while some require students to attend one of our campuses (Lewisham Way or Southwark) to complete an exam in person. This is because they are accredited by examining bodies which need to ensure that exams are sat the same for all students on their courses. Please visit the website and click the ‘Online Courses’ link to find out more.
