Living Green Tips: Recycling at Home Recycling at home or school is easy and a great way to make a difference, both locally and globally. By recycling you can decrease the amount of energy and oil used each year to produce new products. According to the EPA, the national recycling rate is just 34%. Increasing materials recycling in the US to 60% could save the equivalent of 315 million barrels of oil per year. Check out the facts and tips below about recycling and what you can do to make a difference! Recycling Tips: • Plastic goods are assigned different numbers to grade them for recycling: #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) usually used for containers, #4(LDPE) for bags and #7 for mixed plastics. Numbers 1 and 2 are recyclable and most recycling centers will accept them. Number 7 plastics like baby bottles, are not recyclable. • Plastic grocery bags should not be put in your recycling bins. Drop them off at your local grocery store – most stores have bins outside for drop off. • Rinse aluminum, steel & copper cans before putting them in the recycle bins. Leftover food can grow in the container and makes them un-recyclable. Source: www.epa.gov, www.eartheasy.com

Resident Handbook Reminders Parking / Traffic Control

BBQ / Fire Pits and Landscaping

Parking/Traffic Control

BBQ/ Fire Pits

To better accommodate our residents, we have implemented rules concerning parking. Your assigned parking is your carport, garage and your driveway. On street parking, if available is on a first come, first served basis in all Lewis- McChord Communities.

If you wish to cook outdoors, Town Center residents please refer to your lease documents for limitations on grilling in your neighborhood.

The street area directly in front of your home is not your exclusive parking area. You may not use your parking area for storage of any kind.

Meriwether Landing/ Westcott Hill communities that have common BBQ/fire pit areas will need the cover to be replaced once the fire pit has completely cooled. All Residents are responsible to remove all trash/debris to be ready for the next resident to use.

Vehicles including motorcycles are not allowed to be parked on the grass, in front of dumpsters, or in any other area not appropriately marked for vehicle parking.

For all other communities, all BBQ grills must be used at least 15 feet from your home to prevent damage to the siding. BBQ grills/fire pits are not to be used under overhangs, eaves in garages or carports.

No one is allowed to park in a marked handicap space unless the legally required handicap insignia is displayed in the vehicle.

Only commercially purchased above ground fire pits are allowed in family housing and must be used at least 15 feet from your home and within your own yard.

You may not park anywhere a No Parking Sign is installed.

All communities need to properly store flammable materials, keep a fire extinguisher or water source readily available and supervise all fires by an adult until extinguished.

You may not use any parking space to park a vehicle that is inoperable, leaks fluid onto the pavement, is unsightly, is a safety hazard, or has an expired license plate. You may not use any parking space to perform vehicle maintenance or repair to include changing the oil. If you violate any of these parking policies, your car may be towed without notice and at your expense. Visit your District Office for more information on parking spaces.

Recreational Vehicles Recreational Vehicles Recreational vehicles are not permitted to be stored within your neighborhood. Recreational vehicle parking lots are available through MWR. Please visit the JBLM website for more information. For temporary passes for your recreational vehicle please visit your District Office for the process.

The burning of leaves, garbage and paper is strictly prohibited.

Landscaping Landscaping Landscaping services are currently included in your rent. On your lawn service day, you will need to ensure that your lawn is free of toys and personal belongings so the mowers can cut your grass. You can have one large non moveable item in your yard such as a swing set or trampoline. Please see your District Office for Outdoor Policies. The mowers will cut within two (2) feet of the item. You will be responsible to cut the grass under and the two (2) feet around the item. You may choose to maintain your own lawn if desired. Contact your Community Office for a sign to put in your window. If the home you live in has a fence either provided or installed by you, you are responsible for the maintenance of your yard. 4

Seasonal Reminders Cont. Winter Weather Tips For Your Home / Ice and Snow Winter Weather Tips For Your Home: With the changing weather, we could experience extreme temperature drops, snow and ice. When this kind of weather hits the Northwest, there is the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting in your home. You can help to prevent this by taking some simple steps. Disconnect all garden hoses from the exterior faucets. Keep your house temperature set at 55 or higher, even if you’re leaving the house for an extended period of time. Do not turn off the heating system, this can cause significant damage in your home due to broken water pipes. Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow heat from the home to circulate in these enclosed spaces. During extended periods of freezing temperatures set your inside faucets on a low drip to circulate water in the pipes and help prevent the lines from freezing. Ice and Snow: With snow and ice accumulations typically spanning short periods of time in the Pacific Northwest your Lewis McChord Communities teams will focus on hills, major roads and major intersections in and out of our communities. Lewis McChord Communities does not shovel or lay down ice/snow melt in walkways or driveways around the homes. During these times we ask you to use caution while moving in and around JBLM and other communities surrounding the installation, including major freeways and roadways. Follow the guidance provided by local officials and be safe when making a decision to travel away from your home. HAVE A SAFE WINTER

Pet Responsibilities

Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard. Droppings in your residence, including your yard, will be removed daily. Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists. With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.

Extended Leave or Vacation from your home When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absence Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices. Before you leave your home, we strongly recommend that you: 1. Stop mail and newspaper delivery. 2. Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. 3. Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computers. 4. Lock and secure all doors and windows. 5. Turn off water supply line to washing machine. During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253.912.3500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.

* Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements * Make sure your pet has food and water. * Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme. Remember if its too cold for you, its too cold for your pet.

Toilets are not for trash

By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer, Directorate of Public Works

What you flush matters! Using your toilet for disposal of many products can result in blockages. The drains that connect your buildings, businesses, and homes to the main sewer are only big enough to carry water, toilet paper and human waste, about 4” around. Just because the package says ‘flushable’ does not mean the items degrade like toilet paper. They wind up clogging pipes, tangling pumps and causing messy sewer backups. Stop the Clog! Not in the toilet, in the drain or in the garbage disposal: Q-tips, cotton balls, makeup removal pads, sanitary pads, dental floss, medicines, pet waste, diapers, wipes of any kind, bandages, plastic of any kind, napkins, paper towels, rags or underwear, Fat, Cooking Oil, Grease, rubber gloves, food wrappers. When in doubt, throw it out! Pour the grease off into a can, or let it harden and wipe it out, putting it in the trash. The sewers are not for household rubbish. Flush Facts: • Solo Point Wastewater treatment plant treats approximately 3 million gallons of wastewater per day, over 1 billion gallons a year! • Directorate of Public Works crews work on approximately 4-6 calls per week due to items that should not be flushed. • Fats, Oils & Grease clog pipes! The Whitechapel fatberg was as long as the London Tower bridge (250M), weighed as much as 19 African elephants, and was as hard as rock. • 53,000 employees, 5,000 housing residents, 12,000 in barracks and 11 Dining Facilities on JBLM all use the sewer system.

Winter Readiness

By Tia Harris Dalton, Directorate of Public Works Winter in Western Washington usually has mild winters, but you and your family should still prepare for rainstorms, windstorms, and snow and ice. It is essential to make sure that you and your family are ready for unpredictable weather during for your daily commute. Here are some tips from our transit partners Pierce Transit and Intercity Transit to help you get winter ready: Check the weather daily. Forecasters are good about giving lead time before strong storms roll through Western Washington. This will allow you sufficient time to get the supplies that you need for you and your family and decide on transportation options. Be aware of black ice. When the temperature hits the low 30’s, moisture in the air can cause black ice to form on roadways. Black ice is transparent, making it hard to see because it looks like wet pavement. Slow down and leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles. Wear proper footwear and reflective clothing. Add travel time. If you’re walking, biking, or using mass transit, leave yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going. Don’t use cruise control in icy conditions. Using cruise control in these conditions may cause you to lose control of your vehicle putting you and others on the road in danger. Remember that GO Transit makes frequent stops. Leave yourself plenty of room to safely come to a complete stop. This is especially important when it’s dark in the early morning and late evening hours of winter. If you can get through the gate, you can GO! • GO Transit is available for use to anyone who can access JBLM, including service members, dependents 18 years and older, and contract employees. These groups also have free access to bikes from all GO Bike fleet locations. • GO Rideshare provides Service members and DoD employees with a $260 monthly subsidy to join or start a vanpool. This means when you move off base, you can get to JBLM for free too! Check out www.golewismcchord.com and reach out to JBLM vanpool coordinators for details.
