Happy Birthday, America! Sunday, July 4th, marks the 245th Anniversary of the historic adoption of the Declaration of Independence, signed just 14 months after the Revolutionary War began. For 245 years, our country has paused to acknowledge those who have given their lives for our freedom. We celebrate our hard-won independence, which has been preserved for generations by the men and women who followed in the tradition of those early revolutionaries. On Sunday, we salute the spirit of America. Together, we commemorate and honor the heroes to whom we owe our freedom, peace, and happiness. Without the sacrifice of our nation’s military, and the families who support them - the very families we serve each day, there would be no Independence Day. We come from diverse backgrounds and yet, we are all Americans. Our flag and our country keep us united. Let us take time to honor the courage and faith we share as Americans. On this special day, let’s all make a promise to lead our country on a path of prosperity and peace. "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." -Abraham Lincoln Here’s to keeping the flame of liberty burning high and bright. Philip J. Rizzo

Summer Pet Safety Tips

Pet Responsibilities Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard. Droppings in your residence, including your yard, will be removed daily. Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists. With the spring season comes heavy rain. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member. • • •

Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements. Make sure your pet has food and water. Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme.

Late Fee’s To Resume July 1, 2021 As Washington State begins to emerge from the current health crisis, starting July 1, 2021 regular late charges and NSF fees will resume. As a reminder, if you do not pay your rent when it is due, we will assess late fees as follows: A late fee of 10% (or, if less, the maximum amount permitted by applicable law) of your monthly rent (or any portion thereof) not paid when due will be charged for the month rent is due with an additional $5.00 per day (or, if less, the maximum amount permitted by applicable law) until rent is received. Similarly, if your check or other form of payment is dishonored by your bank, we will assess an additional NSF fee of $40 per check. All other above mentioned fees apply as of the date rent was due.

The Dangers of Baby Wipes

A message from JBLM Public Works: This is at the waste water treatment plant (WWTP) that shows the magnitude of the problem when flushing wipes down the drain. This is happening across the US. Philadelphia reported two TONS of wipes and masks flushed down the toilets when they last cleaned out their head works at their WWTP. JBLM Public Works is asking for everyone to stop flushing anything but toilet paper. If this continues we could be looking at a major backup in our housing communities!

Conservation WATER measures werecome developed back using regional local as trash. up, they down weather station evapotranspiration data that provides a scientific basis for healthy growth. Many life-changing events are marked with a mass balloon release such as/SustainableJBLM graduation ,retirement and memorials, but this is a damaging practice. Balloons are made with chemicals, plasticizers and artificial dyes — not 100 percent latex — and can last years as hazardous trash. A recent report from Ocean Conservancy has ranked balloons as one of the top three deadliest forms of litter, only behind discarded fishing nets and plastic bags. Balloons have a destructive effect on animals, environment and people. They can last years in the environment, risking harm to any animal who comes across them. Latex balloons are not biodegradable, even when marketed as such. Animals can mistake burst balloons as an enticing meal, causing intestinal blockage and death, or become entangled in the strings. At Yakima Training Center balloon litter was such a common occurrence on the YTC landscape that in 2018 the Wildlife Program staff started to collect it incidental to their other field work. Over a 3-year period of time (2018-2020) the staff collected a total of 165 mylar/foil balloons reducing not only litter on the landscape but potential sources of wildlife entanglements, mortality, and fires.

There is a better way to mark that special occasion. Consider the dramatic effect of flags, ribbon dancers, pinwheels, bubbles and candles. Other fun ideas can be more engaging. Put together a drum circle, a flock of pink flamingos on a lawn, floating flowers or flower petals on clear water, origami, a wildflower seed bomb, painted rocks or planting bulbs. Memorable moments that also make a big impact and carry the message.
