Living Green Tips: Reducing your Plastic Waste We live in a world where convenience is king. Products are made to be easy to use and disposable, but using these “convenient” products is not convenient for the environment. The use of plastic water bottles, soda bottles, plastic grocery bags, and food packaging adds up quickly in each household. You can help by reducing the use of these products by recycling used containers and leftover packaging. Here are a few great alternatives to using plastic: • The Container Store offers a plastic bag alternative like the Snack Sack with Velcro®; very durable and stylish. • Kleankanteen.com offers stainless steel water bottles of all sizes and lid options. • Nalgene.com is a master of reusable plastic water bottles. They provide unlimited designs, kid-friendly options and numerous colors. • Brita.com has water bottle options with a filter built in. It will filter tap water as you drink. Check out one of their pitchers or large dispensers for the fridge. They are great for the entire family. Source: www.takepart.com

Resident Handbook Reminders Parking / Traffic Control
BBQ / Fire Pits and Landscaping
Parking/Traffic Control
BBQ/ Fire Pits
To better accommodate our residents, we have implemented rules concerning parking. Your assigned parking is your carport, garage and your driveway. On street parking, if available is on a first come, first served basis in all Lewis- McChord Communities.
If you wish to cook outdoors, Town Center residents please refer to your lease documents for limitations on grilling in your neighborhood.
The street area directly in front of your home is not your exclusive parking area. You may not use your parking area for storage of any kind.
Meriwether Landing/ Westcott Hill communities that have common BBQ/fire pit areas will need the cover to be replaced once the fire pit has completely cooled. All Residents are responsible to remove all trash/debris to be ready for the next resident to use.
Vehicles including motorcycles are not allowed to be parked on the grass, in front of dumpsters, or in any other area not appropriately marked for vehicle parking.
For all other communities, all BBQ grills must be used at least 15 feet from your home to prevent damage to the siding. BBQ grills/fire pits are not to be used under overhangs, eaves in garages or carports.
No one is allowed to park in a marked handicap space unless the legally required handicap insignia is displayed in the vehicle.
Only commercially purchased above ground fire pits are allowed in family housing and must be used at least 15 feet from your home and within your own yard.
You may not park anywhere a No Parking Sign is installed.
All communities need to properly store flammable materials, keep a fire extinguisher or water source readily available and supervise all fires by an adult until extinguished.
You may not use any parking space to park a vehicle that is inoperable, leaks fluid onto the pavement, is unsightly, is a safety hazard, or has an expired license plate. You may not use any parking space to perform vehicle maintenance or repair to include changing the oil. If you violate any of these parking policies, your car may be towed without notice and at your expense. Visit your District Office for more information on parking spaces.
Recreational Vehicles Recreational Vehicles Recreational vehicles are not permitted to be stored within your neighborhood. Recreational vehicle parking lots are available through MWR. Please visit the JBLM website for more information. For temporary passes for your recreational vehicle please visit your District Office for the process.
The burning of leaves, garbage and paper is strictly prohibited.
Landscaping Landscaping Landscaping services are currently included in your rent. On your lawn service day, you will need to ensure that your lawn is free of toys and personal belongings so the mowers can cut your grass. You can have one large non moveable item in your yard such as a swing set or trampoline. Please see your District Office for Outdoor Policies. The mowers will cut within two (2) feet of the item. You will be responsible to cut the grass under and the two (2) feet around the item. You may choose to maintain your own lawn if desired. Contact your Community Office for a sign to put in your window. If the home you live in has a fence either provided or installed by you, you are responsible for the maintenance of your yard. 4
Seasonal Reminders Cont. Winter Weather Tips For Your Home / Ice and Snow Winter Weather Tips For Your Home: With the changing weather, we could experience extreme temperature drops, snow and ice. When this kind of weather hits the Northwest, there is the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting in your home. You can help to prevent this by taking some simple steps. Disconnect all garden hoses from the exterior faucets. Keep your house temperature set at 55 or higher, even if you’re leaving the house for an extended period of time. Do not turn off the heating system, this can cause significant damage in your home due to broken water pipes. Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow heat from the home to circulate in these enclosed spaces. During extended periods of freezing temperatures set your inside faucets on a low drip to circulate water in the pipes and help prevent the lines from freezing. Ice and Snow: With snow and ice accumulations typically spanning short periods of time in the Pacific Northwest your Lewis McChord Communities teams will focus on hills, major roads and major intersections in and out of our communities. Lewis McChord Communities does not shovel or lay down ice/snow melt in walkways or driveways around the homes. During these times we ask you to use caution while moving in and around JBLM and other communities surrounding the installation, including major freeways and roadways. Follow the guidance provided by local officials and be safe when making a decision to travel away from your home.
Pet Responsibilities
Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard. Droppings in your residence, including your yard, will be removed daily. Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists. With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member.
Extended Leave or Vacation from your home When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absence Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices. Before you leave your home, we strongly recommend that you: 1. Stop mail and newspaper delivery. 2. Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. 3. Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computers. 4. Lock and secure all doors and windows. 5. Turn off water supply line to washing machine. During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253.912.3500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.
* Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements * Make sure your pet has food and water. * Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme. Remember if its too cold for you, its too cold for your pet. Be kind, bring them inside.

What’s in that storm drain?
By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer, Directorate of Public Works We all live in a watershed, and on JBLM it’s the Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed. When water falls, or flows over JBLM, it ends up in creeks, lakes, streams and the Puget Sound. Simple choices in our daily activities affect the quality of water we drink, we play in and the water that fish and other wildlife rely on. Rainwater runoff (or stormwater runoff) picks up potential pollutants like cigarette butts, dog poop, chemical fertilizers, motor oil, eroded topsoil, and other pollutants and carries them directly into the waters where we fish and play. Some pollutants may even seep through the ground into our drinking water. In a very rainy place like ours, there is a lot of stormwater to manage. The Directorate of Public Works on JBLM designs facilities to capture the water in places where plants, soil mixtures, and other media can help treat it before it infiltrates into the ground. Some things you can do at home to protect our waters and the Puget Sound: 1. Don’t let your pooch pollute! Clean up after your pets. Scoop it, bag it, and trash it, every time. 2. Use a Commercial Car Wash. It is not authorized to wash your POV in your housing unit on JBLM. A commercial car wash uses less water and treats dirty water before it goes down the drain. If you want to hold a car washing fundraiser, sell tickets instead! Tickets can be sold rain or shine and your group will be preserving our water quality. Puget Sound Car Wash Associations website has details: www.charitycarwash.org. 3. 4.
Don’t Drip & Drive! Vehicle leaks shorten the life of your ride and are a major source of stormwater pollution. Check out www.fixcarleaks.org for a $50.00 off coupon for leak repairs. Household Hazardous Waste should never be poured down the drain, onto the ground, into storm sewers or thrown in the trash. JBLM Housing residents can bring it to Environmental Operations Building, 1210 Mann Ave, during the hours of 1300-1530.
Keep up to date with DPW Environmental and follow Sustainable JBLM on Facebook.
