October is the month when we raise awareness about breast cancer. The Liberty Military Housing team has shown their support by wearing pink on Wednesdays. Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families must know about this potentially fatal disease. According to studies, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. However, the rate is significantly higher among women who have served in the military, with breast cancer rates estimated to be up to 40% higher in female veterans and service members compared to the general population Additionally, the incidence of breast cancer among active-duty women is seven times higher than the average rate for fifteen other types of cancer.
While pink dominates awareness campaigns, it's important to note that breast cancer can also affect men According to the American Cancer Society, by 2023, approximately 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men, and about 530 men will die from it. Male mortality rates are 25% higher than female rates due to the misconception that breast cancer is solely a 'woman's disease.' This leads many men to ignore early symptoms, resulting in later-stage diagnoses and potentially poorer outcomes. Learn more about breast cancer in men and the importance of early detection at www.hisbreastcancer.org

Your energy savings gives JBLM the Power to Win
By Hailey Dunn, Directorate of Public Works
October is National Energy Action Month and Joint Base Lewis-McChord spends up to $55,000 a day on energy. That’s a lot! As the 6th largest city in Washington State, with one big energy bill, conservation is the name of the game.
Luckily there is something you can do to make a dent- small changes that make for a big impact. It all adds up when everyone does their part!
Even when not in use electronics still draw power from outlet This phenomenon is called “phantom load”. If everyone does their part to unplug- consider using a smart power strip- it will help you slay that vampire power! Unplug the coffee maker and other appliances, turn off your monitor, and only print what you must
Use LED or CFL bulbs: CFL light bulbs consume up to 80% less electricity than a standard light bulb.
Turn your refrigerator down Refrigerators account for as much as 13.7% of the total household energy use. To increase energy savings, set your fridge to 37 degrees Fahrenheit and your freezer to 3 degrees Fahrenheit.
Install a programmable thermostat and keep on automatic settings. JBLM set points are 68 for winter, and 78 for summer. Seal all air leaks around doors, windows and air ducts.
Our military depends on us to support them with smart energy use to increase readiness.
Give them the Power to Win and reduce your energy usage!
