September marks the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a day in which now represents Patriots Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Here at Liberty Military Housing, we have been dedicated to serving those who serve with a quality home environment and vibrant neighborhoods over all these years.

You will notice, all September long, a new pin that all our team members will be wearing. It is a 9/11 Remembrance pin to show support and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our military service members and their families who live with us.

If you are currently Active Duty, a Veteran, military family member or spouse, we thank you for your service.

Meet Your Carter Lake Mayor Helen Hutchinson

What inspired you to become a mayor? I was inspired to become a mayor after arriving to JBLM and having to live in a hotel for months We're a family of 6 with 4 pets and only had 2 queen beds. I wanted to be apart of something that could help bridge the gap to help families in the same circumstances and help create a better community, keep moral high, and make lasting friendships along the way

What has been the highlight of your time as mayor? The highlight of my time being a Mayor would be the Q&A with the Sergeant Major of the Army I felt like he really listened to our concerns as Spouses and wanted to make our way of living more comfortable while also being realistic about what can be changed now and what will come in the future

What do you want to share with the Carter Lake community? I would love to give my community a sense of being someone they feel like they can come to and be represented by That allows them to feel like they are being taken seriously and feel heard with their concerns

Fun Facts: I love the fall! Halloween is my favorite holiday, however I hate being scared and watching scary movies they are actually banned from being watched in my house after dark I have 3 kids and raising my step brother making 4 little gobblins keeping me busy I love children and animals and always wanted a big family. Every duty station my house has always been the go to house and I love having all the noise and chaos around. I love Starbucks Tumblers and have more than my husband would like.

Military Affiliation: My Affiliation to the military is I am a veteran I served 8 years as an MP until I was hit by a car and was medically discharged. Now I am an Army spouse supporting my husband carrying out our dream. I have been around the military life for the last 17 years and still have 9 years left to go and can't wait to see where our adventure takes us next

We had the privilege of hosting staffers from Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland’s office. They joined us for an insightful tour of the base and our Davis Hill homes, where we discussed the vital role JBLM plays in our nation’s defense and the exceptional contributions of our service members.

Just as Liberty Military Housing provides quality homes, we also appreciate Congresswoman Strickland’s commitment to supporting our military community.

We look forward to continued collaboration with Congresswoman Strickland, her colleagues in Congress, the DoD, and local leaders. Together, we can ensure that our military families receive the exceptional homes and support services they deserve.

A Word From Our West Army Partners Sustainable School Lunches

Back to school is here! Are you wondering how to pack an eco-friendly school lunch bag? Here are a couple of ideas: Ditch the single-use plastic. bags.

Get rid of throwaway zip-top bags and get on board with reusable sandwich and snack

Reusable snack bags are mostly made of coated fabric and come in super cute

patterns and colors and a variety of sizes for your kid’s lunch and snacking needs. These bags are an initial investment (they can be pricey), but they’ll be saving you money in the long run.

You don’t need to spend loads of cash on a fancy new container set, simply reuse empty

pasta sauce jars, yogurt containers, or mason jars to store your lunch snacks. can help reduce plastic waste.

For cutlery, simply bringing some from home or designating a special set just for school

Get your kid a reusable water or juice bottle. Single-use bottled water and juice boxes

generate lots of waste- think about throwing away one (or both) every single day for the entire year, and you’ve got a lot of potential trash on your hands.

A reusable bottle can be rinsed out and reused each day.

Make your own granola bars or snack bags.

Making your own granola bars is not only super easy, cost-effective, and better for your

health, but you’ll also be saving countless individual wrappers from the landfill that take hundreds of years to break down.

Rather than purchasing individual snack packs, buy the bag of chips or other goodies

inbulk and pack them in your reusable bags.

Buy locally and think seasonally.

If you buy food that’s grown locally, you’re not only supporting your own community,

but you’re also reducing the carbon footprint of your food by cutting down on the distance it’s shipped. Check out local farmers markets for delicious, in season, locally grownfood to pack in your kids' lunches such as:

o Olympia Farmers Market: April-October the farmers market is open ThursdaySunday 10 am to 3 pm. November-December its open Saturday and Sundays.

January-March it’s open every Saturday.

o Yelm Farmers Market: June-October the farmers market is open Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm.

o Puyallup Farmers Market: April-Octoberon Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm

o Proctor Farmers Market: March-December Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm

o Broadway Farmers Market: May-October Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm
