Go Green with Clean Products
By: Kiley Westergaard, DPW Environmental Division, AGEISS
Choosing eco-friendly cleaning products is one of the easiest ways to adopt sustainable practices You can either make your own, which is cost-effective, easy, and fun, or buy environmentally friendly products. Look for the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Safer Choice label to identify these products, as they meet strict guidelines for human health and the environment. Whether you choose homemade or store-bought options, making the switch is simple and accessible for everyone.
Making cleaning products at home is surprisingly simple and often only requires items you already have For glass cleaner, combine equal parts of vinegar and water For toilet bowl cleaner, use equal parts baking soda and vinegar, then add a few drops of essential oil for scent. For all purpose cleaner, combine equal parts water and vinegar with essential oils for scent. Homemade cleaning products are not only easy and enjoyable to make but can also be a practical option in a pinch.
If you prefer not to make your own cleaning products, there are plenty of commercially made options that are good for both human health and the environment. The EPA makes it easy to find these eco-friendly products with its Safer Choice label. This green and blue label, usually found near the bottom of the packaging, can be seen on various items like dish soap, multipurpose spray, and laundry detergent Currently, about 1,900 products carry the Safer Choice label, indicating they meet strict environmental criteria.
Every ingredient in a Safer Choice-certified product undergoes a thorough review to ensure safety. The EPA evaluates factors such as carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, toxicity to aquatic life, and persistence in the environment. Beyond ingredient safety, the EPA also assesses product performance, pH, packaging, and more, ensuring that safety does not compromise quality.
Additionally, the EPA conducts audits to ensure companies maintain compliance with Safer Choice guidelines. For more information about Safer Choice, visit the EPA's website:
https://www.epa.gov/saferchoice/le arn-about-safer-choice-label.
Making the choice to use homemade cleaning products or selecting those with the Safer Choice label can both significantly benefit your health and the environment
