A city with a rich past, future of growth

W

est Columbia sits at the confluence of the Saluda, Broad and Congaree rivers, so it has always been influential geographically.

As Europeans came to the New World in the 1500s, large numbers of Native Americans were observed gathering at the location that is now West Columbia.

West Columbia was chartered as Brookland in 1894.

In 1936, the name was changed to West Columbia.

And to this day, the river is still essential to West Columbia. Its rapids attract legions of kayakers, inner-tubers and canoers.

On the east bank of the river is the EdVenture Children's Museum and the S.C. State

a large volume of new business. In 2016, West Columbia issued 2,198 licenses for new businesses. That's about 600 more issued than in 2011.

You may be a visitor, a newcomer or, like us, a longtime resident.

Our goal is to give you anything and everything you ever wanted to know or where you may easily find it online.

Our county bustles with new businesses and industries, first class schools, a supportive faith community and a memorable quality of life.

When we moved here more than 30 years ago, Lexington County was starting to wake up.

According to the U.S. Census the county had 140,353 residents in 1980.

Today, 37 years later, that has grown to an estimated 290,163 residents.

That’s a growth of more than 4,000 new residents a year.

Since the turn of the century, that annual growth has been far higher.

New residents come here for many reasons.

exington County has a colorful past, dynamic present and promising future.

Straddling Lake Murray, its 18 communities, 14 of them incorporated cities and towns, contain historic old neighborhoods and modern housing developments.

Our county has a rich mixture of homes, retail shopping, small businesses and large industries including Amazon, Michelin, Nephron Pharmaceuticals and Prysmian Cables.

Its five school districts are among the top in the state and its outdoors includes the sandhills to the

south, Lake Murray in the center and the beginnings of the piedmont in the north.

Our county and local municipal officials offer services from water and sewer to garbage pickup.

The Lexington County and Chapin-Irmo Aging and Recreation Commissions offer ball field, parks and recreational facilities.

Batesburg-Leesville Located in western Lexington County, Batesburg-Leesville, formerly Batesburg and Leesville, consolidated in 1993. The nearly 8-squaremile town is in Lexington

and Saluda counties.

The friendly, tranquil community of 5,362 people is a mix of urban and rural areas near Lake Murray and Columbia.

The relaxed atmosphere

provides a great place for families, young and old residents, businesses and restaurants, including the famous Shealy’s Barbecue and Hite’s Barbecue.

However, in the twin cities, poultry reigns supreme. Amick Farms and Columbia Farms are the two poultry processing plants. The annual South Carolina Poultry Festival is held here each May. Several buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The top employer is Lexington County School District Three with four schools

and a district office.

Private schools include W. Wyman King Academy and Ridge Christian School for K-12.

Cayce The City of Cayce lies along the Congaree River across from Columbia and is adjacent to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

It is mostly in Lexington County, with a portion in Richland County.

Cayce and neighboring West Columbia share road names and schools in Lexington District Two and are sometimes referred to as Cayce-West Columbia, despite being separate cities.

Cayce is home to approximately 13,000 residents and spans across 17 miles.

The area was home to Native Americans. When Hernando de

Soto reached the area in 1540, he found a large Indian village at Congaree Creek where Cayce now stands.

Later, the Granby township flourished in the 18th century. The town was incorporated in 1914 and named for businessman William J. Cayce.

The river has always been important to this community. Cayce and other local governments jointly developed the 8-mile long Riverwalk along the Congaree River.

The town boasts more than 700 businesses, including utility company SCANA, Amazon and Nephron Pharmaceuticals.

The Granby Pavilion is in the City Hall Complex. Cayce has a Fitness and Tennis Complex, a Historical Museum and a Farmer’s Market.

Annual events include the Congaree Bluegrass Festival in October, Christmas in Cayce events in December, SC’s Official City of Cayce Day in May, and Tartan Day South, a Highland games and Celtic festival.

Nestled along the Congaree River, amidst a bustling metropolitan region, the City of Cayce is a retreat for residents and visitors alike.

Recreation opportunities abound for families and individuals of all ages: launch from the Thomas Newman Boat Landing, wander along 12 miles of Riverwalk trails, or hike the 627 acre Congaree Heritage Preserve. Cayce also plays host to community events throughout the year, including the notable Congaree Bluegrass Festival and Soiree on State art and music festival. Tartan Day South

Gaston Gaston, nestled in the center of Lexington County, is home to the Gaston Collard and Barbecue Festival in October and Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve.

Named for the Gaston Family, the 3.4-square-mile town has 1,657 residents, as of 2016.

Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve, a Nature Conservancy property preserving 3,460 acres of land, is located on the headwaters of Hunt Branch off Highway 6 on

The 8th annual Tartan Days South will be March 22-25, 2018, at the Historic Columbia Speedway on the Charleston Highway south of Cayce.

The event features Scottish Highland games and other sports, live bands and Gaelic music and dancing, great food and interactive exhibitions.

Almost 50,000 have been attended since 2011.

Peachtree Rock Road.

Hunt Branch feeds into Second Creek, which flows into the Congaree River.

There are several unique sandstone and ironstone formations, which resemble upside down pyramids.

Millions of years ago, this area, now known as the Sandhills, was the southeastern coastline of the continent.

The peak contains 7.5 miles of hiking trails. It has the only coastal

plain waterfall in South Carolina.

Gaston area students attend schools in Lexington Districts 2 and 4 in Gaston and neighboring Swansea, West Columbia and South Congaree.

Gilbert Peaches are king in Gilbert, a happy, tranquil community that is known far and wide for the annual Lexington County Peach Festival, a Fourth of July celebration that’s been going on for more than 59 years.

It’s a friendly, laid-back place where neighbors live, play and work side by side and where everybody knows your name.

Incorporated as a town on May 12, 1899, the Gilbert community extends from the town and into 18

rolling countryside, farms and peach trees to nearby Lake Murray.

There are some 614 people living in the 2.3 square-mile town.

Some noteworthy local businesses include Price’s Country Store, a former feed mill; Smith Lumber Co., a sandwich shop; and lakeside venues, too, such as Siesta Cove Marina on John Long Road.

A popular destination in town is the Community Park and Annex on Rikard Circle, where there are good walking paths and an

amphitheater.

Lexington Lexington has been the county seat of Lexington County since 1820, and is the largest town within the county’s borders.

Lexington is also one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the state.

The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population would grow from 17,870 to 24,905 by 2016. The town measures 8.87 square miles.

The Town of Lexington was incorporated in 1861.

In 1865 Union forces destroyed the courthouse and many buildings in town.

and the 900-seat Icehouse Amphitheater in the heart of the town.

Another major draw for Lexington is Lexington School District 1, one of the most innovative and successful school districts in South Carolina.

Local farms and industry, the Columbia to Augusta Railroad and the Lexington Textile Mill built in 1890 helped stabilize the economy and the town grew.

Many buildings in the town are listed on the National Register of

Historic Places.

Entertainment and sights include Lake Murray, Lexington County Blowfish Baseball Stadium, Lexington Community Band, three public parks, Lexington County Museum, Fourteen-Mile Creek Trail,

The Irmo

Celebrating 44 years and counting

Each fall for 44 years, the community of more than 12,000 has invited visitors to a big party celebrating okra.

That number nearly doubles or triples to more than 20,000 to 30,000 during the Okra Strut.

One of the oldest festivals in the county, it is one of South Carolina’s favorite ways to say “so long” to summer.

It all began in 1973 when the Lake Murray-Irmo Women’s Club wanted to raise money for a new library.

Some of the club members heard a broadcast from local commentator and WIS Radio personality Gene McKay. He said he had seen an Irmo general store name ‘The Ancient Irmese General Store” in downtown Irmo.

He wondered what those “Ancient Irmese” were like — “probably short people” — a farming tribe who lived off okra!” His musings caught on.

That fall, the club held a small arts and crafts fair at Seven Oaks Park, called “The Okra Strut.”

The club began the tradition of frying okra for the fundraiser to benefit the library fund. In seven years, they fried enough okra to fund Irmo’s first library on St. Andrews’ Road.

Today, The Okra Strut is hosted by the Town of Irmo and is managed by the Town Council and Okra Strut Commission.

Until recently, the Strut didn’t have a permanent home and was held in various places, including Irmo Town Park and grocery store parking lots.

The Strut has a home now.

In 2017, the festival was held for at the Irmo Community Park on Eastview Drive for the third year in a row.

getting bigger and better.

The most recent celebration featured more than 1,000 participants in the parade.

Grand marshals were Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and the stars of the television documentary “Live PD.” Larry Slaughter, the Irmo Okra Strut Commission Chairman, said he remembers meeting neighbors at the Strut when

he first moved to Irmo before he even met them in his neighborhood.

Once you attend the Strut, you will never forget the fun and want to return. Everyone has fond memories, he said.

“I want to help keep those memories alive,” he said. “It’s a reunion of neighbors and community. Not only do we strut okra, we strut our community pride.”

Pelion Named after Mt. Pelion in Greece, the town of Pelion was incorporated in 1912.

Some 705 people live in the 3.6 square-mile town 22 miles southwest of Columbia and 17 miles from Lexington at the junctions of U.S. 178 and SC 302.

Farmers in Pelion have produced and harvested peanuts for decades.

It was an autumn tradition for the townspeople to gather for the annual boiling of peanuts.

Since 1982 members of the Pelion Ruritan Club have continued the tradition at the annual South Carolina Peanut Party in August.

The two-day festival features the Princess Pageant, craft show, parade, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich eating contest.

Oh! And barrels and barrels of boiled peanuts.

The town’s community park, Pelion Park, has a playground, picnic shelter and Pelion Rail Trail.

Pine Ridge Pine Ridge, whose name refers to a breath of fresh country air, is a bedroom community of West Columbia.

About 2,265 people live in the 3.7 square mile town, established in 1958.

Mostly residential and familyoriented, the town has a small shopping center and ball fields, including the Midland Dixie Youth Baseball Complex.

The thriving Pine Ridge/South Congaree Senior Center serves

Springdale, South Congaree, Pine Ridge and Gaston communities.

Children attend Lexington District 2 schools.

Some 75 Seniors at the center get together monthly with their “Adopted Grands” — 3rd-graders at Wood Elementary. Seniors also make “Dang It” dolls for the military once a month.

The senior center also offers exercise classes and other programs such as Meals on Wheels. Monday through Friday, Seniors can lunch at

the center.

South Congaree A mix of urban and rural community with a down-home atmosphere, South Congaree always has a lot going on.

About 2,400 people live in the 3-square-mile town near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and West Columbia.

Children attend Lexington District 2 schools.

The South Congaree Arena on Oak Street is a favorite staging area for different events.

In July 2017, a couple thousand rodeo fans attended the South Congaree Championship Rodeo in the covered arena. It was sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA).

Police Chief Josh Shumpert said it was a good positive event and hopes it will be an annual occasion.

In December, the annual drama “Jesus Is His Name” will be performed in the arena.

Churches play a big part in the community. Shumpert said 12 to 14 churches in the area hold a Kids Camp in the arena for about 1,000 kids for a week in June.

Other events throughout the year include “Stuff a Stocking,” a program which provides Christmas gifts for 200 kids in need.

Springdale Generations of families call Springdale home. More than 3,000 people live in the 4-square-mile suburb of West Columbia.

Mayor Michael Bishop said families don’t move away from the family-friendly community.

Immediate goals are creating new Welcome signs to give Springdale an identity. Major beautification and landscape projects in the medians and Platt Springs Road corridor area are planned.

Springdale also borders Airport Boulevard.

Bishop envisions that Springdale’s Claim to Fame will be the community that is most driven through and admired.

Bishop said the townspeople take pride in the community and genuine relationships.

Monthly cookouts at various homes have been popular.

Recreational opportunities include the Springdale splash pool,

tennis courts and parks. Students attend Lexington District 2 schools.

Summit Summit is a small, residential community next door to Gilbert.

About 438 people live in the 1.5-square-mile area.

Students attend Gilbert schools in Lexington District 1.

A two-mile trail, called “The Path” connects Gilbert and Summit.

Summit also has other walking trails, a small park and a church, St. James Lutheran Church.

Town Hall

One is that since the community was about 20 miles from Columbia, Orangeburg, Lexington and Springfield, it should be called Swansea, which means 20 in German.

Others say it was named after a city in Wales.

The residential community of 903 people live in a 1.2-squaremile area.

The closest neighbors are in Pelion, North and Gaston.

There are several restaurants, the

Swansea Senior Center, churches and a library.

Swansea A stop for Southern Railroad in 1890, Swansea developed into a small town and was incorporated in 1892.

Hilliard Goodwin is credited for the settlement and consolidation of Swansea. He owned large holdings of land and gave away a number of acres to Swansea settlers. Goodwin donated the land on which the Baptist and Methodist churches were built.

There are a couple of theories about how Swansea got its name.

West Columbia West Columbia lies west of the State Capital directly across the Congaree River.

The urban commuter city is near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, Columbia’s downtown district, the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina State House and the Congaree Vista. Cayce borders West Columbia to the south.

In 1894, West Columbia was incorporated as Brookland.

The U.S. Postal Service called the town New Brookland since there was another town called Brookland.

In 1936, the name changed to West Columbia. Numerous businesses, churches and a high school retain the Brookland and New Brookland names.

Some 16,282 people live in the 6.3-square-mile city. Students attend Lexington District 2 schools.

Longtime residents and young families alike live, work and play together in historic areas and new developments in West Columbia.

The Gervais Street Bridge, New Brookland Historic District and Saluda Factory Historic district are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Riverwalk and Amphitheater just past the Gervais Street Bridge are among the city’s most popular attractions.

West Columbia lies along eight miles of the Congaree River and offers various dining, and shopping venues and health amenities,

including Lexington Medical Center, the county’s primary healthcare provider.

The river provides opportunities for canoeing, tubing and kayaking, parks with water front concerts and more than eight miles of walking trails.

The city has access to the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Putting the heart in hearth Local blacksmith champions local history, heritage

A

t age 14, Heyward Haltiwanger did not know what he found would make a difference.

It was his grandfather’s old blacksmith forge on a junk pile in the woods.

Today, he’s a skilled blacksmith who finetunes and perfects his blacksmith skills.

He hones his metalworking skills by making knives and taking master classes at the Creative Arts Haywood Community College in North Carolina.

For example, he showed me an incredible, shiny and expensive looking knife that in its past life was a rusty old file.

Haltiwanger has been a blacksmith artisan at many shows, including the South Carolina Museum, Lexington County Museum, Musgrove's Mill, Heritage Festival in Belton and more.

He collects blacksmithing tools and period costumes from the Colonial and Civil War times.

forks, spoons, knives, hooks, nails, axes and other items are included in his repertoire of skills. He also sees needs for tools and creates them.

Hair today, gone tomorrow His family still butchers hogs in winter.

Removing hair from the hog is hard so he invented a tool that strips the hair quickly

and efficiently.

He likes to take old horseshoes, files and hinges and transform them into something new.

“When learning how to make a new item, I really enjoy the research,” he told me.

Curiosity lured him into blacksmithing.

When he found his grandfather’s old forge in the woods, he searched and found the missing parts and fixed it.

As a teenager, he walked railroad tracks to pick up coal that fell from the train to heat his forge.

Through trial and error, he tinkered with the forge through high school to see what worked and what didn’t.

He put his blacksmithing interest on hold when he was drafted into the military, married and had children but tinkered with it as he had time.

When he retired, he had time for blacksmithing and joined the Phillip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild.

That's where his curiosity led him to the lost art of making wooden wagon wheels.

“Blacksmithing skills and wheelwright skills go together,” he said.

“A wheelwright had to have excellent blacksmith skills.”

Making wooden wheels was essential until the early 1900s.

He starting helping wheelwrights and learned the skills.

Whiskey paradise: Distill it and they will come?

L

exington County natives Jessica and Phil Crouch are treading family ground with their distlling business. Jessica’s grandfather was a distiller and Phil became interested in it while working another job. The couple discussed how it all resulted in running a distillery.

Q. How did the two of you become interested in distilling whiskeys?

A. I worked at Anson Mills, an organic grain mill in downtown Columbia for four and a half years. While there, I worked with all kinds of grains for food products. My hobby outside of work was home brewing. I loved the variety of flavors from grains in food and beer and wanted to explore that in distillation.

Q. How did you get started in your kitchen?

A. There’s no way to explain this without acknowledging that distilling without a license is illegal. That being said, there wasn’t any way locally for me to learn the process, so I learned from books and quietly starting “practicing.”

When I met Jessica, I was glad that my hobby didn’t alarm her. In fact, our first Christmas together she gave me a new still. Her grandfather was also a distiller so she had a family history with distillation.

Q. How are you growing your business?

A. We started by distilling whiskeys, but have since started distilling brandies from local fruits and rum from local sugar cane. We partner with local farms like Geechie Boy Mill on Edisto Island. They are growing heirloom or regionally traditional products and feature their work with our spirits.

South Carolina has a rich agricultural history, distillation is deeply rooted in history and farming so we view growing our business as an agricultural pursuit.

This is evident when you visit our tasting room. We have a variety of spirits and offer tours of our facility along with a tasting. Every week we meet new people interested in local spirits.

We’re growing the business by focusing locally and engaging with customers personally.

People like to know who grows and distills their whiskey.

Q. Where do you see the business going over the next five years?

A. It’s been suggested that craft distilling is 10-15 years behind the trend of craft brewing. I think that’s true.

A. Jessica and I will be married four years this November.

We’re both South Carolina natives.

She grew up in Gaston and I grew up in West Columbia, where we live now. I attended USC before working at Anson Mills.

I developed my interest in grains and agriculture while working at the mill.

Jessica grew up in a much more rural environment and her family history kept her from shying away from the prospect of opening a distillery.

We use the 5-gallon copper pot still she gave me our first Christmas together to run small test batches.

In fact, as a way to extend the life of our grains and to reflect traditional farming practices, we raise heritage hogs with our spent whiskey mash on the same land where her grandfather distilled and farmed years ago.

Jessica attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, then USC for graduate school. She works at USC now so her involvement at the distillery is strictly nights and weekends but if you stop by the tasting room on a Saturday, we will both be here pouring tastes and giving tours.

Lexington County residents are great sports fans, pulling for their high school and college sports teams.

aves of fun opportunities lap up on Lexington’s threshold, fresh from nearby Lake Murray.

For nine decades now, since work on the Dreher Shoals Dam began, the reservoir has been a watery playground locals have sought for pleasure — and hospitality for guests.

Where Native Americans skillfully guided hand-hewn canoes, contemporaries now sail, skipper and steer watercraft designed purely for recreation.

The Spirit of Lake Murray schedules tranquil cruises throughout the year, and captains of smaller boats also offer excursions out onto the lake, on set dates and by appointment.

In this lakeside community, boating and fishing are hand in glove, so it’s no wonder fishing tournaments punctuate the year.

Competition — man against nature — brings to the area outdoorsmen, as eager as locals to reel in stripers, bass, crappie, catfish and other trophy catches.

Fresh air, clear lake waters and sun draw outdoor lovers to sink into inner tubes, balance themselves on stand-up paddleboards, leave a frothy wake behind their personal watercrafts, and sometimes tie up their boats, becoming nautical neighbors with a bobbing and floating queue.

Congaree National Park

Nearby Congaree National Park can be explored by water and by land. More than two miles of smooth, level boardwalk affords visitors the

opportunity to venture, by foot, into the largest expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the South.

Canoe trails offer a similar, but water-based opportunity to experience the haunting beauty of this verdant cathedral.

Hiking trails, places to walk

Just being near the lake encourages trail walkers to make their way along its edges.

Hiking trails around Dreher Island State Park, Saluda Shoals Park, and Harbison Forest, warm up legs for stretching along parts of the Palmetto Trail, the still-growing River Walk, part of Three Rivers Greenway nearby in Columbia.

Sesquicentennial State Park, just northeast of Columbia, also features hiking trails, billed as nature trails.

Sesqui’s six-mile bicycle loop offers another way to enjoy the natural surroundings of the sand hill park.

Urban walking, at Lexington Square and through Virginia Hylton Park, allows locals to get fresh air and exercise without leaving city limits.

Golf Tournaments

Man against nature is the ultimate competition, but man-made contests also capitalize on recreational time.

That means: Have a ball!

Being ideally situated just down the road from Augusta, GA, and the Master’s Tournament, affinity for golf makes Lexington almost an auxiliary fairway.

The Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce

and Visitors Center hosts two local tournaments each year, and golf also benefits organizations such as the Lexington County Choral Society.

Football is King

The largest spectator destination within driving distance of Lexington is Williams Brice Stadium where the Gamecocks meet Home Game opponents.

In town, the Blowfish Ball Team has earned fierce allegiance for a summer league that keeps the playing arms of collegiate athletes warmed up off-season.

High school ball also has loyal followings throughout the region.

Locals have ancestors to thank for leisure time to enjoy fun pursuits. Those who settled the area were hardworkers who put down roots in the fertile soil.

Every deck and most of the docks leading from area marinas have, at some time, been shagged on.

The South Carolina State Dance has shuffled its way into recent history.

Shaggers flock to live music that pounds out the requisite beat or tune in to radio stations, such as The Lake 93.1 FM. Whether dancing, balancing on a stand-up paddleboard, hiking, running for home base, or marching in a parade, Lexington has a foot firmly set in many centuries, especially the 21st.

West Columbia makes most of river, its most valuable asset

Though modern structures line both sides, the river that runs through West Columbia evokes a timeless sense.

Moving across the clean, clear water on the rapids, with scenic beauty and the smell of the outdoors, it’s easy to imagine how earlier generations must have felt where three rivers converge.

Today, that site is home to West Columbia’s Riverwalk. Its official name is the Wyman M. “Mac” Rish Riverwalk and Amphitheater.

“These three rivers have always been vital to life,” said West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton.

Because of the importance of the river, Horton said it is imperative to provide entry points to the city’s most valued natural resource.

Nowhere is access to the river more available than in West Columbia.

“We don’t have a beach, the ocean or the mountains, but we have this river. And there are so many recreational activities available on the river,” said Horton. “We want to share the river as much as we can.”

Horton is pleased that so many residents come to the river so frequently. He also said the river is an attraction for out-oftown visitors.

Gregg Pinner, president and CEO of the Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce and John Banks, the chamber’s tourism director, said access to the river has been a game-changer.

“It’s our No. 1 asset,” said Banks. “People come for the river sports and then they can enjoy our restaurants and antique district.”

He said the Riverwalk attracts a high-volume of out-of-town visitors.

Pinner said offering river access has had a far-reaching affect.

“We used to be divided from the other side of the river,” he said. “Riverwalk has eliminated that divide. It has changed the perception and helped foster strong and positive relationships.”

Pinner also said the Chamber’s Rhythm on the River spring and fall concerts at the Riverwalk Amphitheater are possible because city leaders had the vision to develop access to the river.

Pinner and Banks also pointed out that Riverwalk is safe because the City of West Columbia has a ranger to patrol it.

It has not always been that way.

Many in West Columbia, who were reared on the banks of the river, will tell you that the river was a big part of their lives in their formative years. But kudzu and undergrowth were a barrier.

Former West Columbia Councilman Eric Fowler, who retired from council in 2015, grew up in West Columbia’s New Brookland Mill Village. Both of his parents – like so many others- were employees of the Mt. Vernon Mill. Fowler said he remembers going to the Dixie movie theater on State Street as a child in the 1940s to see cowboy movies.

In the 1950s, Fowler was overseas in the Navy during the Korean War. When he was away, Fowler said many times his mind would wander to his house on Carpenter Street.

Fowler also said, growing up, he had the Congaree River next to his home, as a playground.

“I remember boys, bigger than me, when I was a child, in the river pulling out cannon balls,” Fowler said. Those cannon balls were said to be a product of The Civil War bombardment of Columbia from the river’s banks.

The river as a focal point

in West Columbia has not changed, but the use of the resource is evolving.

Michael Mayo has operated Palmetto Outdoors for more than 10 years. The business offers tubing and kayaking excursions down the river.

Riverwalk is a loading point.

Mayo said he was a taught a respect for the river by his father when he was a child.

He has spoken in front of West Columbia City Council and told them that people come from Ohio, New York, Florida, and many other states, to West Columbia, in order to enjoy a float down the river.

He also conducts education tours along Riverwalk for Lexington School District Two students in the late fall and winter, outside of tubing season.

Mayo is just one example.

Horton said so much positive has flowed from the vision of West Columbia’s leadership to make its piece of the river available to so many.

About the Blowfish

T

he collegiate “Boys of Summer” enter their 13th season in the CPL and 4th in Lexington County.

The team was founded in 2006 in Columbia, South Carolina, and played their home games at historic Capital City Stadium.

At the end of the 2014 season, the Blowfish swam across the river to the “Baseball Promised Land/Lexington County, SC” and began play in 2015 at the new Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Players are recruited from colleges and universities from across the state, region and nation including the USC Gamecocks, Clemson, and Coastal Carolina.

The team has twice been voted Coastal Plain

League Organization of the Year. The team is locally owned by Bill And Vicki Shanahan.

About Lexington County Baseball Stadium The new stadium was opened in 2015, and while capacity is 2,375, the stadium has held over 3,000 standing room only.

Some of the unique features include that all field dimensions are the same as four of the great major league stadiums of today: The Right field foul pole is 302 feet (Boston Red Sox/ Fenway Park), Centerfield is 394 feet (Chicago Cubs/Wrigley Field), the Left Field foul pole is 318 feet (New York Yankees/Yankee Stadium) and from home plate to the backstop is 55 feet (Los Angeles Dodgers/Dodger Stadium).

Lexington Medical Center is undergoing the largest hospital expansion in South Carolina history. The hospital looks forward to meeting the health needs of our community for years to come with a new, stateof-the-art patient care tower.

The 10-story, 545,000-sq-ft tower will add 71 inpatient beds to the hospital’s 428-bed facility on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia. It will feature larger patient rooms, educational space for staff and community members, and enhanced dining options, as well as expand the hospital’s Labor and Delivery, and Mother/Baby departments.

Lexington Medical Center’s expansion project will deliver an even better patient experience for expectant families. Welcoming more than 3,700 babies each year, the hospital is consistently recognized as one of the best maternity hospitals in South Carolina. In fact, community members have named Lexington Medical Center as “Best Place to Have a Baby” for consecutive years.

The new Labor and Delivery unit will have a dedicated area for patients who come to the hospital in labor or those who need temporary evaluation. There will also be

six antepartum rooms for patients who may need extensive long-term monitoring, a completely dedicated Mother/Baby unit for postpartum patients, Level 2 Special Care Nursery and a Newborn Nursery.

One of the best features of the new patient care tower will be the 20-bed Special Care Nursery. The hospital’s tiniest patients will have private rooms, which is a new model of care for Lexington Medical Center.

Research has shown that private rooms for special care infants provide more bonding opportunities for mothers and their babies, offer a safe environment for education, lead to better outcomes for babies’ growth and lower infection rates. Lexington Medical Center will be the only hospital in the Midlands with private rooms for special care babies.

In addition to women and children’s services, six floors of Lexington Medical Center’s new patient care tower will accommodate medical, critical care and surgical patients. Not only does the hospital have one of the busiest Emergency departments in the state, it is one of the busiest surgical hospitals in South Carolina, performing more than 20,000 surgeries each year. Lexington Medical Center plans to add eight operating rooms in the new tower and expand its surgical recovery area.

Because of the growth of the

hospital and its network of care, the expansion will also include Lexington Medical Center’s Pharmacy department, which provides services for the hospital’s inpatient departments, six community medical and urgent care centers, and approximately 60 physicians practices. The 17,000-sqft space will accommodate an automated medication dispensing system and enhance compounding service capabilities.

Lexington Medical Center aims to create a cohesive medical campus that is convenient and accessible, so patients, visitors and staff will benefit from seamless connectivity between Lexington Medical Center’s new tower and the hospital’s North Tower.

A new parking garage will add more than 950 parking spaces to the hospital’s campus, and a central energy plant will support the service needs of the new tower. The three-year project also includes the expansion and addition of support spaces, such as a physician on-call area, indoor and outdoor dining options, and an education conference center.

Expected to be complete in 2019, Lexington Medical Center’s expansion project will guide the growth and development of the hospital and its network of care as it works toward its mission — to provide quality health services that meet the needs of the community.

A. As for the future of Kid’s Day, we hope to be able to continue to make it better every year, and continue to do it for years down the road. We know we are not event planners, but we try to make the event fun and enjoyable for all that attend.

As long as families enjoy coming out to the event, we will do our best to put it on. Thanks for the great 17 years Lexington. This is an amazing place to call home.

3rd generation doctor follows family tradition Brice Reynolds, son of Dwight Reynolds and his wife Debbie Brady, has followed his father and grandfather into the medical profession. Here is the story his mother shared with us.

Q. It may seem obvious to some why Brice chose to follow them but that’s not always the case. What drove him to endure the rigor and demands of medical training?

A. Thanks to his pediatrician father, Brice was always respectful of medicine. It took his little brother to make Brice consider medicine as a career for himself.

On one of their first Boy Scout camp outs together, Brice’s little brother Caleb had a diabetic seizure when his blood sugar went too low. Adult chaperones were

unsure of what to do and beginning to panic, and only Brice knew to give Caleb sugary drinks to bring up his dangerously low sugar.

His brother then went immediately to the doctor and recovered safely.

After that harrowing experience, Brice realized that he could never accept a situation where he was cut off from help and didn’t know what to do in a medical emergency.

exington County can boast about its Godly heritage.

Lexington has the honor of having the oldest congregation in the Saxe Gotha township, in the back woods of the Carolina Colony.

Founded in 1745, Mt. Zion Lutheran church was formed. The first congregation met on the banks of the Saluda River, near Godfrey Dreher’s fort on Twelve Mile Creek. The second oldest church was in the Dutch Fork, the German settlement between the Saluda and Broad Rivers.

Formed in 1760’s, St. Jacobs Lutheran originally met near the Wateree creek. They are now located off the Chapin Exit on I-26.

The first Methodist Church in Lexington, Shady Grove Methodist church, was formed in the 1770’s in a

brush arbor, which is now on Shady Grove Road, in Irmo. It is rumored that Francis Asbury preached at brush arbor meetings, which was the start of this very old Methodist church.

When Lexington County was formed in 1785, the churches included in her borders expanded from her Lutheran heritage.

Lexington is now home to many Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian, non-denominational churches, and even the messianic congregation, Gates to Zion. Sciway.net has a general listing of the churches in Lexington County.

Mt. Horeb UMC Summertime and vacation bible school is a long tradition for many families. The stories, crafts, games and friendships stir our memories. Many churches have great VBS programs, but Mt. Horeb UMC is the best that I have seen.

What started over 15 years ago as an evening event for youth has grown to morning, afternoon and evening sessions every day for a week. This year they had 1,946 kids from Mt. Horeb, other local churches and 7 local daycare centers. Activities were typical of most VBS programs, but they have an interesting alternative for sixth graders called “Leader in Training,” an international program that puts them in leadership positions during the VBS week.

They also had 950 adult volunteers. They were moms and dads, professionals, educators, law enforcement and business

owners. All volunteers had to attend a “Safe Sanctuary” safety training class.

There are 65 volunteer Directors that start planning for VBS in March each year. Their goal is to connect kids in small groups with a caring adult who follows Jesus. For some kids, it is their first exposure to an adult, outside of their home, that cares about them and wants to help them connect with and follow Christ.

Janis Albergotti said “VBS is hands down one of the best weeks of the year! We get to experience the kingdom of God in action as kids and their lead-

ers come together for powerful worship, inspiring bible teaching, life changing missions and lots of fun! Our goal is to lift up the name of Jesus and make Him famous in our local community as kids commit to love and serve Him.” You have to admire what they have accomplished at Mt. Horeb with this valuable program.

Go Forth Ministries I interviewed Mary Hook from Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, and wow, do they have a great ministry to 85 families in Lexington and Cayce.

It’s called Go Forth Ministries and is housed in the former Parsonage for Mt. Hebron, but started around 28 years ago and was once a year in December. They originally started the ministry to help the homeless in Columbia survive the winter.

They distributed food, coats and jackets, shoes and clothes. The first one met homeless people at Taylor St. Pharmacy’s parking lot and later moved to Washington St. UMC. Two years ago, they moved into their current location. Now they open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to provide food, clothes, toiletries, prayer and counseling at no cost to the participants. However, there are restrictions on income and place of residence. The

assistance is not intended to be permanent, and most people move off the program eventually. Church members donate everything that the ministry provides, and 25 volunteers work in the ministry. The $1500 a month cost of the ministry comes from the members and a once a month sale community sale.

Now, the most interesting thing it that the ministry was started by a sixteen year old girl from BCHS, DeeDee Hook Brogan who is Mary’s daughter.

DeeDee had a great uncle that was homeless and she developed a real compassion for the homeless because she saw their plight first hand. After DeeDee married and moved away, Mary and husband ID Hook kept it going and I discovered from our conversation that it is truly a labor of love and compassion for people going through tough times.

I’m sure there are other church ministries that are similar to this one, but the remarkable thing to me is that it was started by such a such a young woman with a dream and desire to help others. Hooray for DeeDee and all those who kept her dream alive.

Quilting and canning at Swansea’s Hen House Ministry

Women from far reaches of the county and from right down the road show up at this sturdy, old farm house and pull up to a wooden quilting frame.

With needle and thread, experienced fingers push through the layers of cotton to create new heirlooms.

“We welcome helping hands,” said Glenda Furtick.

“Experienced quilters, beginners, even those willing to sort the fabric donated by generous friends can all be part of our experience.”

Furtick gestured to a back room where folded cotton material, stacked ceiling-high, is organized by color combinations, waiting to be made into quilts.

“Everything made here is turned back into the ministry, either the Hen House Ministry or some other ministry that can use fabric,” Furtick said.

“Eat it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”

Bed and bath were well beyond the reaches of our grandparents and their grandparents.

Shopping malls were far into the future.

When our ancestors pulled up the covers on cold winter nights, the warmth they clutched came from colorful cotton quilts.

Quilts still are – as they were then - two layered coverlets. The top was patterned, hand-sewn (no sewing machines in those early days) from scraps of fabric.

The shapes that made up the intricate patterns in those days often were carefully salvaged from whatever remained of worn out garments.

The bottom layer usually was plain, often white.

The warmth came from whatever filling was layered in the middle.

She said she is always looking for extra hands for the Hen House kitchen.

“You don’t have to know how to can – we can teach you. But anyone can help peel tomatoes, and when produce comes in, we have to work fast.

“Everything we can at Hen House was donated,” Strickland said.

“We often show up on Wednesday mornings and find that neighbors have left on the front porch whatever they have more of than they can use.”

Strickland said that determines what they are going to can that day.

ome to five public school districts, Lexington County is well-known for its educational institutions, offering some of the best schools in the Palmetto State.

Lexington School District 1, the county’s largest district, boasts 17 elementary schools, seven middle schools, five high schools and a technology center, covering the towns of Lexington, Pelion and Gilbert.

Lexington School District 2 caters to the Cayce and West Columbia areas of the county, and features 10 elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools. The district also has institutions focused on the arts and technology for students of all ages.

Small in size but not in spirit are Lexington School District 3 — which serves the town of BatesburgLeesville — and District 4, which serves Gaston and Swansea. Between the two districts, there are five

early childhood and elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and two adult education centers.

Lexington Middle becomes IB World School

A

fter years of hard work, Lexington Middle School turned the page on its journey toward improving instruction by achieving International Baccalaureate World School status.

The casual observer walking the halls sees instruction, planning and a renewed focus on connecting lessons and concepts to real-world issues.

“Anchoring our learning in the IB framework gives us the flexibility to maintain our culture and the strong legacy of LMS, while allowing us to shift practices to

meet the learning needs of today’s middle school students,” reflected Principal Gloria B. Nester.

In 2012, LMS administrators began a feasibility study comparing current practices with those of the IB Middle Years Programme.

They soon declared official interest in becoming an IB World School, selected an IB coordinator, sent teachers and administrators to IB workshops, and revised curricular units and the school’s mission statement with an added focus on inspiring, preparing and

empowering students.

LMS submitted an application for and was awarded candidacy in March 2014 for the 2014-15 school year.

During this phase, an IB consultant visited LMS and provided feedback.

In the fall of 2016, a three-member team of IB educators conducted an intense two-day inspection by observing classrooms, interviewing students, parents, teachers, Central Services administrators and members of the Board of Trustees, and evaluating curricular units and student work samples.

Due to the hard work put in by LMS administrators, teachers and students, LMS has now joined the IB World School network.

LMS teachers benefit, too, from collaborative professional development in inquiry, concept-based curriculum, backward design/ planning, performancebased assessment, proficiency scoring and score calibration as they join a network of IB World School professionals who connect online and exchange ideas and resources to enhance students’ learning experiences.

Lexington 2: A district on the upswing

L

exington School District Two is an academic community that is rooted in rich traditions, with an eye on progress toward the future.

In 2014, the people of the Lexington Two School District voted overwhelmingly in favor of a $225 million bond referendum.

The students of the district needed new schools and the residents of Lexington Two met the need.

In less than three years since the bond referendum was passed, the spacious and state-of-the-art Cayce Elementary School opened on Aug. 18, 2017.

In addition to CES, work on the second new elementary school, in West Columbia, is moving forward. The district is also building a career and technology center

in Cayce and a new basketball arena is slated to open in 2019 on the campus of the district's Brookland-Cayce High School.

Aside from the building boom in Lexington Two, the district has many community schools that have served generations of families.

From Springdale and South Congaree to Saluda River and Pine Ridge, the schools are being significantly upgraded.

The district celebrates the new, while it reserves a strong reverence and respect for its past.

Brookland-Cayce High School boasts generations of the same families that have walked the stage on graduation day. And the pride at Airport High School is surpassed by none.

The new Cayce Elementary School combines student bodies from Taylor Elementary and Davis Early Childhood Center for Technology to host about 960 students.

Lexington Two Schools is only a part of the picture. It is as strong academically as its buildings are stately.

Almost 88% of the district’s seniors graduate from high school, according to Dr. Bill James, Lexington Two superintendent.

Lexington Two’s graduation rate is higher than the national graduation rate of 83%, and higher than the state’s rate of 82.6%.

Lexington Two students earned almost $11.4 million in scholarship money in 2016.

We’re all about sports

Lexington County has a long, proud sports tradition.

Numerous state champions in football, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, softball, soccer and track and field have been crowned in Chronicle Country.

From August to May, a total of 15 high schools compete in close to 20 sports for both the S.C. High School League and S.C. Independent School Association.

The county has 13 highschools in the SCHSL: Airport, Batesburg-Leesville, Brookland-Cayce, Chapin, Dutch Fork, Gray Collegiate, Gilbert, Irmo, Lexington, Pelion, Swansea, River Bluff and White Knoll. Two — Northside Christian Academy and W.W. King Academy — are in SCISA.

Collegiate Baseball

Lexington County has been home to the popular Lexington County Blowfish collegiate baseball team since 2015.

The team plays its home games at Lexington County Blowfish Stadium (formerly known as Wildcat Hallow) and is a member of the Coastal Plain League.

Next season, the Blowfish will serve as host site for the league's 2018 All-Star Show.

The 2-day event will take place July 8-9 and feature a mini-home run derby and a Fan Fest.

Lexington County Baseball Stadium is the Big South Baseball Tournament’s home. Eight league teams from both Carolinas compete to earn a berth in the NCAA College World Series tournament.

Coastal Carolina won the tournament in its first year in Lexington and went on to win the 2016 College World Series.

The American Legion summer league features three local teams from Lexington Post 7, West Columbia Post 79 and ChapinNewberry Post 193/24.

In 2015, Chapin-Newberry became the first South Carolina team since 1936 to win the American Legion World Series.

Dutch Fork High student 1st female to pass Fire Academy test

utch Fork High School rising junior Hannah Leydig became the first female student in Lexington-Richland School District Five to pass the Fire Academy “Firefighters I” test at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center).

Leydig enrolled in the “Fire and Rescue 1” course at The Center.

The course includes overview of the functions and history of the fire service with emphasis on fire suppression.

After earning her South Carolina Fire Academy Firefighter I certification, Leydig was able to enroll in the formal “Firefighters I” class.

The class integrates individual online learning along with practical skills sessions that include live fire training opportunities.

“This is such a big honor for me

Leydig to be the first female to pass the test,” Leydig said. “My family is so proud of me. When I enrolled, I remember telling my mom that I am going to do this; I am going to be the first female to pass this test.

“I am so grateful for the support of my class – being the only female, they treated me like I was one of them. It really helped me get through the exam and whole process.”

Michael Levy teaches the firefighter courses at The Center and was amazed at Hannah’s willingness to always go the extra mile.

“During our Live Fire Introductory Burn field trip, Hannah was able to push through her comfort zone and succeed at navigating the Columbia Fire Department’s three-level maze without the ability of seeing anything,” Levy said.

“She always went above and beyond to conquer her challenges, and never expects any different treatment as a female. Hannah has learned that she has unique abilities to persevere in order to succeed at accomplishing new challenges.”

Leydig says she would like to pursue a career in the Air Force after she graduates, which would also allow her to be a firefighter in her spare time.

One of our better-kept secrets

ne of our better kept secrets is Midlands Middle College, a charter school that aims to prepare students for college. Courtney Mills, the school’s new principal. talks about the school and its purpose.

Q. Many of our readers may be unfamiliar with Midlands Middle College. Can you give us a Cliff Notes version that explains what you do and for whom?

Midlands Middle College is a public charter school that serves students in the 11th and 12th grades who want to complete their high school experience in a college environment.

We are located on the Airport campus of Midlands Technical College, and we have developed a partnership with MTC to provide students with the opportunity to not only earn their diplomas but also to begin taking college classes while still in high school.

Any 11th or 12th grade student in the Midlands area is eligible to enroll, and our school is tuition-free.

We help both students who just want to earn their last few high school credits as well as those who want to get a jump start on college classes.

Q. How did you become involved?

A. I have been involved with

charter schools for ten years now, beginning as a math teacher for one of the first virtual schools in the state.

Prior to that, I taught math in traditional classrooms, and I was looking for a way to do something differently and to work with students on a more individual basis.

Once I moved into district administration and began working with charter schools all over the state, I became familiar with

Midlands Middle College and was intrigued by the nature of the school and its potential impact on students’ lives.

I came here as the assistant principal last year, and I moved into the role of principal on July 1. I am excited to continue the great work this school has done over the last several years.

Q. What do you see as the program’s best opportunities?

A. I believe there are two.

First, we offer students a small, incredibly personalized experience. Our maximum capacity is 135 students, and because of that small number, we can give each student the individual attention they deserve.

Second, we offer students over 100 choices of dual-enrollment courses where they can earn both high school and college credit at the same time.

Additionally, MMC will pay for up to two college classes each semester, so our students have the opportunity to graduate well ahead of their peers en-

tering college for the first time.

Q. What do you see as its

greatest challenges?

A. Our greatest challenge is

finding innovative ways to meet each student’s individual needs.

Because we do everything on a small scale, it takes more time and effort than if we provided the exact same experience for all students.

For example, we may only have one student who is interested in cosmetology as a career, but we still want to spend the time to help that student explore that interest.

This is why we welcome business leaders in our community to help us by serving as mentors to students, offering internships, or visiting the school to share information about their career and life experiences.

The more opportunities to which we expose our students, the more options they will have and the better prepared they will be when they leave high school.

Q. What are your top 3 goals for the next five years?

A. My top three goals are gradu-

ation, career exploration, and college acceptance for our students.

First, we want to identify students in the Midlands area who could use individual assistance in earning their high school diploma and let them know we are here to help. MMC’s graduation rate has steadily improved for the last three years, and I want to see that trend continue.

Second, we want to expose our students to as many career options as we can and help them find a path that best fits their interests and life goals.

And finally, if college or additional training is part of that career path, then we want to make sure our students meet the requirements for entrance and understand how to enroll and finance their education.

Town of Springdale Roof, Hook, Corley, Sox, Shull, Seay, Buff….

These were the names found on the mailboxes scattered along Platt Springs Road at the turn of the 20th century.

A family traveling by horse and buggy could count on one hand the houses that were visible along Platt Springs Road. Two sawmills, an apple orchard, and a dairy farm comprised the commercial sector of the community for the majority of its unincorporated existence.

The feeling of community pride was strong, and, not wanting to lose that pride, the residents held an election on June 7, 1955 to determine if they wanted to incorporate into a town. The incorporation was approved by a vote of 35 to 24. The name of Springdale was chosen, being an appropriate choice due to the many springs located within the town. Mr. Job Roof served as the first Mayor and the first Town Council was made up of Mr. Jeff Roof, Mr. John B. Sox, Mr. Horace Lown, and Mr. Horace Wise. Having no municipal building in which to meet, the first council meeting was held in an automobile under an oak tree at the corner of Platt Springs Road and Springdale Road.

Shortly after the construction of the Town Hall, the Springdale Women’s Club bought the land adjacent to the building to be used as a park. Over the years, playground equipment, covered shelters, and a splash pad have been added, making the park a desirable spot for the community.

Every year, the Springdale Police Department hosts an exciting event in the Felton C. Benton Park. National Night out is meant to strengthen the relationship between the community and the police department. In 2015 and 2016, the Springdale Police Department was awarded the National Award for Small Communities presented by the National Association of Town Watch.

Whether there is a DJ or live music, hot dogs or ham-

burgers, bounce houses, dunking booths, or face painting, each and every year the Springdale Police Department manages to one up themselves.

The Town of Springdale and Springdale Elementary School have partnered together to create a joint-use facility that serves all the citizens of the town. Cindy’s Place Healthy Fitness Zone is an ambitious project that seeks to thwart obesity in the community young and old.

It consists of outdoor learning centers, fitness equipment and other features on the grounds at Springdale Elementary School.

From the 1980s to today, the public infrastructure of the town has been modernized to enhance the quality of life in the community. The small town charm, southern hospitality, and family values that have flourished in the community over the past century remain alive and well in the Town of Springdale.
