These correctional officers and staff are enjoying special events to make the week special.

It’s a small way to show how much we appreciate their service and the vital role they play in the Sheriff’s Department.

Lexington County Museum Spring open house

In the olden days The Lexington County Museum family day and Spring open house was May 6.

The museum tour began at the Hazelius house built in 1834. It was the home of the Rev. Ernst Hazelius when the seminary was in Lexington. By 3 p.m., nearly 200 people had arrived for a bit of history. Museum workers baked bread in an outdoor oven and made baskets at the loom house.

Docents prepared a 19th Century meal in the Fox house kitchen.

uman trafficking is getting a lot of attention in the news and for good reason.

There have been a number of incidents in the midlands where young women were being followed or approached by unknown men at Walmarts, malls and grocery stores.

If you are anything like me, you’re thinking, “who is doing anything about this?”

Lighthouse for Life is doing something.

I searched online to learn what became of these squatters. All I could find was the date of Yank’s death, June 6, 1978. His birth date was given as 1910, no month, no day. His real name was Ansle, a noble name of the old days. Perhaps that’s why he seemed a bit dignified despite his position in life.

He’s buried, if indeed, this is the Yank I remember, in the cemetery of my church.

I just can’t be sure he’s one of the two mysterious men who would walk into Goolsby’s grocery store. Goolsby’s. It had to be the source of the debris trail’s bottles, jars, jugs, and cans, some of which I no doubt stocked.

We cross paths with all sorts. For this Georgia boy, working at a country store and hunting squirrels brought me into contact with frontiersmen. Had I not been so timid, I could have put myself at ease around them and learned much about survival. But that was then, and this is now.

They are gone and the squirrel hunter’s a photojournalist. All I can do is walk their debris trail and see what it teaches me about these squatters of the 1950s and 60s, people who lived like pioneers.

3 warning signs you’re having a stroke

It’s that time of year

Which of the following is a sign of stroke?

Facial drooping?

Arm weakness?

Slurred speech?

The answer? All of the above.

If you see someone with the symptoms of a stroke, it’s important to act quickly.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts.

When that happens, part of the brain can’t get the oxygen it needs and starts to die. If it lasts for a long time, there can be permanent damage.

Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol use and atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat.

South Carolina has a high rate of stroke. In fact, it’s the fourth leading cause of death in the state. Statistics show that more than 20,000 people suffer a stroke in South Carolina each year, and more than 2,500 people die from a stroke.

“South Carolina is in what’s known as the ‘Stroke Belt,’” said Douglas Sinclair, DO, a neurologist with Southeastern Neurology and Memory Clinic, a Lexington Medical Center physician practice. “Our state has a bad combination of factors including smoking, poor diet, and not seeking routine medical care that makes us

Fortunately, heartworms are easy to prevent with both oral and topical products available. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security just because your pet is an indoor pet. How many times have you killed a mosquito that was inside your house?

Another problem with heartworms is you can’t see the parasite. The clinical signs of coughing, exercise intolerance, and heart failure may not appear until the disease is more advanced. In some pets this can take years.

Adult heartworms damage and obstruct pulmonary (lung) arteries which then begin to affect the heart and can lead to other organs being damaged.

Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. This is why prevention is by far the best option. Treatment should be administered as early in the course of the disease as possible.

Heartworm disease in cats is very different from heartworm disease in dogs. Most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage.

This means heartworm disease often goes undiagnosed in cats. The medication used to treat heartworm infections in dogs cannot be used in cats,

so prevention is the only means of protecting cats from the effects of heartworm disease.

The American Heartworm Society recommends that you “think 12” for your dog: get your dog tested every 12 months for heartworms, and give your dog heartworm preventive 12 months a year.

Cats should be tested before being put on prevention. Because there is no approved treatment for heartworm infection in cats, year round prevention is critical.

As with any medication, talk with your veterinarian about what is best for your pet.

Only use heartworm prevention products that are tested and proven effective by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Keep your pet on year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Even indoor pets are at risk. Treat your pet every month to prevent flea infestations in your home.

Ask your vet what flea and heartworm prevention medicines will work best for your pet.

Dr. Angie Slatton and the special services department with School District Five have always had an eye on the future for its students.

The district has partnered with multiple organizations to create the BOOM program. BOOM (Building Occupational Opportunities in the Midlands) features students with disabilities from School District 5, Richland 1 and Richland 2 in a semester-long course where they learn construction at Midlands Technical College’s airport campus.

“We want all of our students to have the opportunity of gaining career experiences and training experiences post-high school, and for those not earning a traditional high school diploma, it’s challenging,” Slatton said.

“This partnership allows our students to attend a course at Midlands Technical College that ends in

competitive employment.”

Slatton says the four students in BOOM from School District Five will likely all receive job offers at the conclusion of the program May 18.

Through partnerships with Midlands Education & Business Alliance, SC Vocational Rehabilitation, Midlands Workforce and the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina, students from all three districts have spent months on building projects including birdhouses and small buildings.

“I think I’ve always had a passion for building construction, but to be honest this is more of a dream than anything,” said Chapin High senior Sam Bennett.

Irmo High senior Azante’ Dawson added, “I always wondered what or who I wanted to be – this has been an amazing experience.”

What originally started as a simple brainstorm idea and a few meetings turned

into something Midlands Tech program director Vince Earls calls “one of the most gratifying experiences I’ve ever been a part of.”

“To see what these students have been able to accomplish and do things that maybe some people didn’t think they could do has been incredible,” Earls said.

“It is so exciting to see the passion come out in these students.”

This opportunity is one Dawson says he thought would never happen.

“I never thought I would have the chance to try construction, but I am so thankful it has happened,” Dawson said. “I’m so thankful for my teachers who have helped pull a passion out of me.”

The students will be honored for the completion of the BOOM program at a reception May 18 at Midlands Tech airport campus’s Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Crafts Center.

bowl filled with a cold salad with flavorful ingredients are a “hot” menu item this year! There are several ways to incorporate the numerous varieties of spring vegetables, superfoods, grains and cheeses into a “super” salad by using simple preparation methods.

Here are a few tips to make a salad that will appeal to even the pickiest eater:

Public Notice TOWN OF SUMMIT SPECIAL ELECTION Notice is hereby given that a Special Election shall be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, for the purpose of electing one (1) Council member for an unexpired term.

Citizens desiring to be candidates for one of the above offices may file at the Lexington County Registration and Elections office located at 605 West Main St, suite C, Lexington.

In order to qualify as a candidate for office and have his or her name placed on the ballot; one must be a resident of the Town of Summit and be a qualified elector.

There is no filing fee; blank petition forms maybe obtained from the Lexington County Elections office or www.scvotes.org and final petitions forms must contain good signatures of 5% of the registered voters residing in the Town.

Midlands Rivers Coalition begins water quality monitoring

Chief Terrence Green was presented with the “Criminal Justice Award” during the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network annual conference in Columbia April 11.

Lexington Police Department Victim Advocate Sadiyah Cochran nominated Chief Green for the award.

Under Green’s leadership there has been a focus on training so that officers are knowledgeable in victim services and in the community resources that can be provided them such as Sistercare, private counselors and other non-profits all working towards the same end goals.

Lexington Police Department was presented several awards at the recent South Carolina Department of Public Safety 2017 DUI Enforcement Recognition & Law Enforcement DUI Challenge.

The Lexington Police Department was selected as the “Agency of the Year” in the category of a police agency with 51-100 officers.

During 2017, officers made 200 DUI arrests while committing four officers to the Traffic Division, including two officers who are on a Target Zero grant program.

Officers within the Traffic Division attended several hundred hours of advanced training and instructor level

courses through the year to achieve Traffic Safety Officer (TSO) or Traffic Safety Instructor (TSI) certifications.

Patrolman First Class Nick Thompson was presented with the “Officer of the Year” award for a police agency with 51-100 officers. During 2017, PFC. Nick Thompson had 56 DUI arrests and he achieved advanced training and certifications in traffic enforcement and instructor level courses while training hundreds of teens in safe driving and prevention instruction.

The Lexington Police Department was also presented a “2017 DUI Challenge Award” for being active participants of the 11th Circuit Law Enforcement Network with area agencies.

Of the 200 DUI arrests made by the Lexington Police Department in 2017, the following officers were recognized with Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for their efforts: Gold awardees were Patrolman First Class Ridge Alewine with 60 DUI arrests and Patrolman First Class Nick Thompson with 56 DUI arrests. A silver award was given to Patrolman First Class Brian Payton with 37 DUI arrests. Bronze awardees were Officer Brandon Hassler with 21 DUI arrests and Officer Shawn Ludwig with 11 DUI arrests.

The Midlands Rivers Coalition, formerly known as the Lower Saluda River Coalition, began its second year of water quality monitoring of the major rivers in the Columbia area.

This year, the monitoring has been expanded to include sampling locations on the Broad River in addition to existing sites on the Lower Saluda and Congaree Rivers.

The testing will be done weekly and run from May through September. Weekly data will be posted each Thursday on howsmyscriver.org.

Created in 2016, the Midlands Rivers Coalition is made up of river related businesses, environmental organizations, academia, local and state government, recreation providers, property owners, industry and other users of the rivers.

One of the main purposes of the coalition is to educate river users on water quality issues related to our rivers.

The Lower Saluda, Broad and Congaree Rivers are recreational destinations for public fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, swimming and wading.

As with most natural bodies of water, these rivers can be negatively impacted periodically by short-term events such as runoff from heavy rains, sewer overflows and other events.

The program aims to enhance public awareness on these issues.

The first objective is to make water quality information more frequently and readily available to river users so they can make informed decisions on when to recreate in the river.

This is the first program of its type for inland waters in South Carolina.
