As temps rise, look before you lock

hough we’re not yet in the dead of summer and the heat that comes with it in Lexington County, warmer temperatures are certainly on the way. Even now with the high temps hitting the 80s, that makes conditions inside a parked car hot and unsafe. On an 80-degree day, a car can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.

Outside of crashes, heatstroke is the number one vehicle-related killer of children in the United States.

In 2017, there were 42 preventable deaths of children in vehicles, an 8% increase from 2016.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that the bite is improving and the fish have been biting well in about 40 feet of water on Murray. He is catching them anchored and using cut bream for bait.

Especially with warming water temperatures, it is also that time when bank beaters can have a ball bass fishing on Lake Murray.

Lake Murray Fishing Report ake Murray water levels are at 358.03 (full pool is 360.00). Surface temperatures have gone up 3 or 4 degrees to the mid- to upper-50s in the last two days.

Temperatures are rising on Lake Murray, and Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striped bass are starting to get into more of a spring pattern.

However, the most consistent bite remains fishing down-lines in 4050 feet of water.

There are some really good days pulling freelines and planer boards, but you have to hunt for the fish and the action can be pretty hit-or-miss.

However, with warming temperatures and the full moon Brad predicts that more and more bait and fish will pull up shallow soon and he looks for the pattern to shift more towards free-lines and planer boards.

On the crappie front, Brad reports that anglers are catching plenty of fish trolling and tightlining, especially if they are willing to cover a lot of water and hunt.

However, this is also the period when you can go shallow with a jigging pole and a cork and catch fish. Brad predicts

Gilbert High’s boys soccer team claims region title

year ago, Robby Setzler celebrated a Region 5-3A title on the sidelines as the head coach of his alma mater BrooklandCayce.

This time around, Setzler was even more celebratory leading his visiting Gilbert High School team to a similar achievement.

The Indians held off the Bearcats 2-1 Friday to claim the Region 5-3A title.

Osvaldo Guijosa and Angel Barazza scored in the first and second halves and Gilbert withstood a late push by the host team to give their first-year head coach the much-desired victory.

“It was real different,” Setzler said. “Usually I’m sitting over there, but I’m sitting over here and I’m going to coach my team. Those guys bought into me in January and February and we had a common goal and that was to win a region championship and to be in the Top 10 in (Class) 3A by the end of the year which I do believe we will finish. But these guys bought into me. They need all the credit. They play hard every day. They train hard every day and that’s what we’re trying to build, lay that foundation

and keep going. So I’m happy for the guys.”

A veteran S.C. National Guard commander from West Columbia has been nationally honored.

Col. Ronald Taylor, the SCNG chief of staff, has been inducted into the OCS (Officer Candidate School) Hall of Fame.

Induction of military officers into the OCS Hall of Fame is an honor dating back to 1958.

Individuals inducted have distinguished themselves in their military or civilian life in a noteworthy way since graduating from OCS. “I went to OCS after serving 13 years as an enlisted soldier reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class,” Taylor

said. “Through the OCS program I gained a lot of knowledge on leadership styles and effective ways to manage soldiers to accomplish missions.”

The inductees are honored at the National Infantry Museum with a Hall of Fame dinner and are memorialized at the OCS Hall of Fame gallery.

Taylor and his wife Kristy live in West Columbia and have two sons.

After 13 years as an enlisted soldier he was commissioned in 1993 as an SCNG military police officer.

Taylor completed a tour of active duty as the Director of Emergency Services and Provost Marshal for Fort Jackson and as a Provost Marshal for a Combined Joint Task Force in Afghanistan.

He has received the Legion of Merit Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the South Carolina Governor’s Unit Citation, Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other awards.

Windows built with wood pegs, not nails, tell you just how old this place is. When you walk the grounds here, you are going way back in time to the days of grandparents with many “greats” attached to their names.

Places such as this one exist here and there in museums, but how many hide in the hinterlands? Very few.

I’m blessed to visit such a place. Yes, the old three-seater caught my eye. It’s classy, essential, and well-made.

Sure, the elements conspire to return it to nature but it’s holding up so far as it heads toward 300 years. It’s been standing long before the advent of power tools, plastic, drywall, and nails.

On Sunday April 15 the Irmo Fire District responded to more than 40 calls for service within a two-hour period due to the storm that passed through the area. A majority of these call were related to large trees that had fallen.

The damage included downed powerlines and severe structural damage to homes with reports of residents still trapped inside. No injuries were reported.

Chapin residents want 59 roads rezoned. There was standing-room only as the Chapin community showed up in support of Councilwoman Erin Long Bergeson’s rezoning ordinance.

The roads are currently zoned as Local, which allows for commercial and high-density residential.

Residents want them rezoned as RL-4 for low-density residential. This would allow only four houses per acre.

“I feel we need to preserve our community by developing our town responsibly,” said Chapin resident Andrew McAngus.

Others are concerned about the effects clear-cutting by developers have on the water supply.

The increased traffic on narrow two-lane roads, water runoff issues, and wildlife habitat was on R.T. Miller’s list of concerns at the meeting.

Season Spring With Onions

Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind gathered and ate, and are one of the first signs of spring. Onions are in the allium family along with garlic and shallots. There’s nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an onion! Spring onions are my favorite type of onion, both as an ingredient and as a vibrant, flavorful garnish.

Spring onions also are called green onions, young onions, pencil onions and scallions.

Scallions aren’t as fully ripened as a green onion and should not have a bulb.

Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in the ground to grow, they’ll form into an onion bulb.

Larger, older spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the smaller ones.

Spring onions should be small and thin, with a firm base at the root tip and crisp, bright green leaves.

Select spring onions that are not fully developed, with a white bulb end and long, green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring onions will keep for five to seven days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator.

Spring onions are a great source of vitamins A and C,

iron, calcium and fiber. They also contain a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots. Eating onions helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

To prepare the spring onions, cut off the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lingering dirt.

Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is listed most often as part of recipes, the green leaves also should be incorporated into recipes and as a garnish.

Use the leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers in-

to a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them.

While spring onions are best served raw, they’re also delicious grilled or sauteed.

They should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor. This recipe is a showcase for two vegetables that will brighten up your dinner plate with the colors and flavors of spring!
