Cut costs without cutting your throat Our friend and fellow consultant likes to say every dollar you earn must first cover your costs. But every dollar you save goes straight to the bottom line.

Not all of these tips may be for you, but you can save money by using a few.

1. Turn down the heat before leaving for the evening or weekend. And keep the temperature at 72 or lower during your operating hours.

2. Turn off unnecessary lights and computers. Walk around your office a few times a day and see how many empty rooms are lit. Turn off the light.

Protect yourself from those who will steal Even honest people steal if the temptation is great enough

In 36 years of consulting and coaching small business owners, one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do was tell two partners that a third partner was stealing $50,000 a year from their business.

It probably was more. But I felt horrible. I didn’t want to dig any further.

Theft is the most heart wrenching thing I have to deal with. You work hard. You never expect people to steal from you.

When they do, your first reaction is disbelief, then sadness. Then, usually anger.

And nobody talks about it.

Until now. It is time that someone did.

Small business owners like you invest too many hours to have your money and other assets stolen. This theft could cause serious cash flow problems and damage your business if not caught.

I believe that 99% of your employees are honest. Some people steal the first time because of need. Something has happened in their life (divorce, sickness, death) and they need money.

They stop thinking rationally and get emotional. Then they do things that they never would do when thinking rationally, stupid things like the bookkeeper that landed in jail for three years because she forgot that the company loaned money to its employees. These are part of the 99% who are honest until tempted.

However, there are the 1% of employees who get a thrill

out of stealing. The professional embezzler. It is the challenge. Can they get caught? It is a joy to them.

As one very wise man told me, “The job of a good embezzler is to become the trusted bookkeeper.”

The professional embezzler is patient. They learn your processes or lack of them.

They work hard and eventually earn your trust.

Then, they take a little.

When you don’t discover it, that little turns into hundreds of thousands of dollars until they quit or get caught.

Most of them quit abruptly for no apparent reason. Then you find out about it later

when the next bookkeeper is hired.

It may not be your employees who are stealing from you.

Your vendors can steal too.

Their employees might be part of the 1%. Your vendors can change check amounts, create side deals with your employees and other crimes.

There are three major ways people steal: money, materials, and time.

Most employees don’t think twice about surfing the web, excessive smoking breaks, taking personal phone calls, or texting on company time. In fact, most small business owners accept and pay for a small amount of personal time as part of an employee’s day.

Read labels and check the calories and ingredients.

Flu season arrived later than usual this year, and this month it’s running rampant. So be extra careful where you go shopping and what you pick to eat.

You’ve probably heard this advice often: Don’t go shopping when you’re hungry.

I’d like to share some healthy shopping advice with you that benefited me.

According to Janell Yule in “The 21-Day Detox Challenge,” just because you are shopping at a local grocery does not mean every item is a good choice.

A cookie is a cookie. Even if it contains organic sugar.

• When you are shopping for produce, check the numbers on stickers.

If it starts with a 3 or 4 it’s been grown conventionally. If it starts with an 8 it’s genetically modified. If it starts with a 9 it’s organic.

If you can buy organic, that is ideal.

A Westinghouse lockout of 172 workers at a nuclear components plant may affect construction elsewhere.

But S.C. Electric & Gas does not believe it will halt work at two nuclear plants near Lexington County.

“Reactor vessel components for Unit 3 are being manufactured at the Newington, N.H., facility,” SCE&G spokesman Eric Boomhower said.

We have already received reactor vessel components for V.C. Summer Unit 2,” he said.

Newington has locked out its union workers from a plant that makes reactor vessel barrels and other parts for new AP1000 plants such as those here and at Vogtle in Georgia.

“Disruptions,” one report said, “could further complicate construction.”

Lexington County-based SCE&G and Southern Company, which is build a single nuclear power generator in Georgia, are deciding whether to continue building their reactors or abandon construction after Westinghouse sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

SCE&G’s two new reactors are years behind schedule and billions of dollars over projected costs.

SCE&G officials have said their last option here is to halt construction, losing all of the billions its investors and customers have paid to build the two plants.

Almost 100 people — 40 of them military veterans — assembled Monday morning at Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes’ Memorial Chapel for

Gold Star families who have lost a loved one in war and Blue Star families who have a loved one in service somewhere in the world.

S.C. National Guard Major Gen. Van McCarty of Lexington said, “Gold Star mothers know the true meaning of this day. They have one less family member at Christmas.”

Gen. McCarty thanked the families of National Guard Lt. Ryan Rawl, Army specialist Thomas Caughman and Marine Lt. Almar Fitzgerald, all killed in the War on Terrorism.

As a county native, he said, “I challenge you to find any other community that has responded to the call to serve as we have.”

Injured by a coyote trap, Hermione was in dire need of help.

But with the help of a few local friends, a humanitarian from Los Angeles managed to find Hermione and give her the treatment she needs.

“We got her! With help from an amazing team of volunteers, Hermione is now Safe!” Eldad Hagar wrote on his company’s Facebook page May 27. “Loreta Frankonyte will post updates from the hospital while I work with the vet to take this horrible

device off her foot.”

Hagar, founder of Hope for Paws Rescue, came all the way out to Lexington County after receiving video of Hermione being stuck in a trap.

Lexington County Animal Control received word about the dog on the night of May 21, and spent days looking for the small labrador mix, but could not find the evasive pup.

Hagar’s volunteers, however, managed to find her. They left for California on Memorial Day. It is believed Hermione will lose the leg injured by

the trap, but she has a new lease on life thanks to Hagar.

Now that the dog is in good hands, Lexington County spokesperson Harrison Cahill said the investigation will focus on the coyote trap.

“We’re happy the situation came to a beneficial end for all parties involved,” he said.

“We’re glad she received the medical care she needed and will soon find a forever home.

“We’re going to continue to look into the coyote trap — why it was there, who set it there, and how the dog became ensnared.”

Hermione is seen with her foot still stuck in a coyote trap shortly after Eldad Hagar and his volunteers found her. The dog has been treated and is being taken back to California.

How a girl from a small town grew up to become governer and U.N. Ambassador

Nikki Haley has gone a long way from Lexington, S.C. because she has ABCs: • Attitude. She summed this up in her book “Can’t Is Not an Option.” In running for the Statehouse, she went door to door and even showed up at her rival’s fundraisers and asked for people’s votes.

• Brains. She kept books for her mother’s gift shop at age 13 and earned a Clemson University accounting degree.

• Character. When dirty political with sexual gossip was thrown in the governor’s race, she denied the accusations and kept campaging with Michael, her husband.

Nimrata Nikki Randhawa Haley is the first Indian American and the first female to become South Carolina’s governor. Halfway through her second term, President Donald Trump asked her to represent our country at the United Nations. Nikki has always said what she believed, and it has made international headlines.

We first met at a Lexington Chamber of Commerce meet-

When she announced she was going to run for governor, she made other reporters wait until “my hometown newspaper editor” showed up.

She was our state’s first female governor, the nations youngest governor and one of only two Indian Americans to lead a state government.

Now past 39 – I’m not going to divulge her age – she and her family live in New York and she travels the world as U.S. Ambassador.

She was born in Bamberg, a daughter of Raj Kaur Randhawa and Dr. Ajit Singh Randhawa, Sikh immigrants who had come to the US from Amritsar, India. She has one sister and two brothers, Simran,

Charan and Mitti.

After several years in business, she returned to Exotica International, her family clothing business. As chief financial officer she helped it expand to become a multimillion dollar enterprise.

After her United Nations stint, she is a potential candidate for another first — the first female U.S. President.

Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff On chilly February evenings, it’s nice to come home to the smell of Chicken Stroganoff which has been spreading its delightful aroma throughout the house all day.

No, don’t eat the sofa cushions because they smell so good. Open the slow cooker to the real thing.

Some preparation can be done before bedtime and started in your slow cooker the next morning.

Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff 4 servings 456 cals 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cubed 1/8 cup corn or olive oil 1 package dry Italian-style salad dressing mix 1 8-oz package cream cheese 1 10.75-oz) can condensed cream of chicken soup 1 8-oz package wide egg noodles

Add cream cheese and soup, mix together and cook on high for another 30 minutes or until heated thoroughly.

While that heats, drop the noodles in your pot of boiling water and cook until tender. Drain noodles in a colander, add 2” of hot water to the pot, place drained Put chicken, oil and dressing mix in noodles in colander over the pot and cover slow cooker, mix together and cook on until you’re ready to serve. low for 5 to 8 hours.

You may want a green salad with your When you arrive at home this evening, stroganoff with your favorite dressing or start a pot of water boiling to cook the egg you can skip it if you’re too hungry to noodles. wait long to dig into the stroganoff.

A cautionary note: Some like to help themselves to the noodles, then put the chicken and sauce over it.

I prefer to toss them together so that the pigs in our family don’t help themselves and leave little for the rest of us.

Some cooks think you can substitute rice or potatoes for noodles if you prefer, but that’s not real stroganoff.

Trust me. It’s far better with noodles than anything else.

Master Marketer Greg Wych is a master marketer whose business happens to be dentistry.
