For the second straight week, Lexington District One held a ribboncutting ceremony for one of its school’s refurbished athletics facilities. Superintendent Gregory Little cut the ribbon for the rebuilt softball and baseball parks at Pelion High School.

Chapin’s American Legion Post 193 awards ‘Quilts of Valor’ The Quilts of Valor Foundation started with a dream founder Catherine Roberts had one night while her son was serving in Iraq.

She dreamed about a young man in the middle of the night, hunched over.

Her sense in the dream was this young man was in utter despair, with his “war demons” clustered all around him, dragging him down into an emotional gutter.

Then the scene changed and she saw him wrapped in a quilt, with his whole demeanor changed from despair into wellbeing.

The quilt had made the change. Roberts’ saw that the quilt represented healing.

She named the quilt, “The Quilt of Valor.”

This special quilt is a

handmade, high quality quilt.

In 2003, the first Quilt of Valor was given to a soldier who had lost his leg in Iraq.

The movement spread across the nation quickly, and the Quilt of Valor Foundation was born.

Its mission is to “cover all those service members and veterans touched by war with comforting healing Quilts of Valor.”

At first, the focus was on veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, but later shifted to all warriors who had been touched by war.

Robert’s said that one Vietnam War veteran, told her that “Ma’am, this is the first time in forty years anyone has ever thanked me for my service.”

Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels have steadily risen to 356.96 (full pool is 360.00). Morning water temperatures are in the lower 50s over much of the lake, but it’s not unusual to see temperatures push into the mid-50s on warm days.

The mud at the top of the lake has mostly settled out and so even in the rivers there is 1.5-2 feet visibility. The rest of the lake is clearer.

As one would expect with rising temperatures at this time of year, veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that bass are starting to move up.

While it’s been warm the sun hasn’t been out very much, but with sunny conditions things will accelerate.

Two weeks ago water temperatures were approximately 47 degrees, and so there has been a pretty significant change pretty fast.

Fish are just starting to stage on secondary points and rocky places, and generally getting out of the suspended deal and more onto the bottom.

Basically, they’re getting out of winter patterns and starting to act like they

should in mid-February, moving towards the bank and getting pretty near their spawning areas.

At the end of February last year, fish were already spawning, but water temperatures got lower this winter.

Doug does not expect fish to be spawning on the first full moon in March, but if temperatures stay as warm as projected it’s not impossible.

When morning surface temperatures hit 55-57 degrees there will be some fish trying to spawn in clear, protected areas – and often they will be bigger fish.

For now, there is still a crankbait bite the first couple of hours of the day that is generally over by 10 a.m., and then on sunny days, you need to look around shady banks or under docks.

Shakey heads are still working pretty well and you can also fish an Alabama rig around docks.

On the striped bass front, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that some fish did move down the lake towards Dreher Island escaping the mud line, but overall the dirty water settled out very

quickly and the river has now cleared up well.

They are back to catching lots of fish on bucktail/ ice fly double rigs, and this morning he saw birds and striper working schools of bait. The Big Saluda has

cleared up a little better than the Little Saluda.

While water temperatures are still in the low 50s, once we get some sun Brad expects the pattern to begin to change pretty quickly.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that the pattern is still the same but the fishing has just gotten a lot better.

There have been some very nice catches in the rivers. Most of the crappie are

still in 10-12 feet of water or less, and they are getting shallower. Tight-lining minnows and jigs is still the best pattern.

A new way to do Sunday School that works

A

mong the things that can stir up a church congregation is changing a traditional way of doing things, especially if it’s Sunday School.

But not every time, as I learned in an interview with Justin Hall, Youth director at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington.

Having taught Sunday School myself for 26 years, I’ve seen firsthand how changes affect the attitudes of class members.

So Justin was quite brave when he proposed a radical change in youth Sunday School Classes as they are a pretty big ministry of his church.

His idea was to completely overhaul it from grade level classes to elective subject classes instead.

“Why change” I asked.

He replied that children mature at different rates.

For example, not all sixth graders need or want the

same thing.

The members had many questions, but everyone was positive and quickly got behind it.

The subjects focus on Foundation of their faith, which is aimed at middle schoolers; Confirmation (catechism) which seals them as a member of the church; Application of what they have learned in Sunday school and World View, which shapes how they think.

The classes rotate every six weeks, and kids of any grade can attend whatever class suits them at the time.

Some of the results are: It drives more conversation between kids and parents gives them more responsibility as they grow in faith, it allows them to meet other teachers and kids from different grades, teachers are less likely to experience burnout and can be more creative in their lessons.

B-L Primary School wins Hess STEM kits The B-L Primary School Media Center now has 12 Hess Toy Truck STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) kits thanks to a partnership between the Hess Corporation and the Baylor College of Medicine.

Amy Bedenbaugh, the school’s Media Specialist, applied for the kits back in January and learned last month that BLPS had been chosen as one of approximately 1,000 schools to receive the kits.

Each kit is comprised of a Hess toy dump truck, loader and special STEM cur-

riculum. The curriculum, which was created by the Baylor College of Medicine Center for Educational Outreach, demonstrates how the trucks and loaders can be used as learning tools.

For example, Mrs. Bedenbaugh said the kits can be used to help students learn about natural resources, specifically the best ways to move materials like water, rocks, soil and minerals using simple and compound machines.

The Hess STEM Kit Giveaway is held annually and is open to teachers across the nation.

Not so with people.

I know of four people who took their own lives — all men.

They all shot themselves in an isolated place, alone in a loneliness we can never imagine.

Though two were bitter and beaten, they didn’t take anyone with them, and that brings me to a subject everyone abhors: School shootings.

Like kudzu, the massacres keep on keeping on. Nothing new.

You might remember Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower shooter, who killed 17 people Aug. 1, 1966.

The Virginia Tech massacre, where a student killed 32 people, strikes close to home.

My daughter and her husband graduated from Va Tech and married there, and now their son attends Virginia Tech.

Just recently my other daughter said something that breaks my heart, “Daddy, every time I drop the kids off at school I wonder if it is the last time I will see them.”

It’s hell to have to live that way, isn’t it?

As one of the mountain men in “Deliverance” said, “This here river don’t run to Aintry. You done taken a wrong turn, somewhere.”

I got my tail whipped for all kinds of foolishness. Did me good.

To this day, when I consider doing something I shouldn’t, I think. “What

might happen to me if I do this?”

When I went to school, we had .410 Mossberg’s, handguns, and .22 rifles, but we were more interested in cars, sports, music, and dating.

Come nightfall, we kept the keys in the ignition and didn’t lock the house. Now, we have car alarms, security systems, and a 911 number to call.

Like today’s kids, we wanted to be popular, but Daddy taught us that life wasn’t fair.

Some people are born prettier, some smarter, some into darkness.

Social media is a big part of youth’s culture. They post pictures and videos of themselves doing cool stuff and see how many “likes” they get. Their self-esteem depends on getting others to “like” the image they project.

When the sun doesn’t always shine on their butts, well, a few feel someone must pay the price.

Yeah, we took a wrong turn.

When I was growing up, the six scariest words in the English language were “Wait until your daddy gets home.”

Knowing some kids see life more clearly courtesy of sore butts beats having to read about another massacre.

One October afternoon, I walked to the mailbox. As I thumbed through junk, a thud took place.

I looked over to see a decapitated squirrel bounce off pine straw.

Looking into a pine tree I saw a hawk up high.

The hawk sailed across the court and landed in another pine.

A second squirrel fell and it, too, had been decapitated.

Was the hawk killing for revenge? No, it was just being a hawk, but people kill for revenge.

With tenacity, school kids cling to this fragile thing called life, but some demon feels slighted and a vile, greasy lawnmower slaughters a field of daffodils.

Somewhere down yonder,

Over the years, a tree has been growing up through darkness, up and out a chimney. Perhaps a bird dropped a seed down the chimney unleashing the miracle of life.

From an angle, the house resembles an abandoned chapel, steeple askew. The tree is growing toward the light. The house shelters the tree, and the tree’s crown breaks thunderstorms’ violent downdrafts. Old and new co-exist.

I wish that house and tree could give me hope that blending old and new ways of thinking can halt the carnage, but that may never happen.

People don’t have the will to return to corporal discipline. It’s not “modern,” so, sad to say, all we do is complain, but at that, we excel.

And we excel mightily.

One more thing ... The next time you pass a field of daffodils, remember the children who are no more.

12,000 years of history in Cayce

T

he 12,000-Year History Park at Congaree Creek in Cayce is full of history.

It includes a civil war battle site, Fort Congaree, a pre-revolutionary war fort and trading post, and a portion of the Cherokee trail.

There is archeological evidence of human occupation for 12,000 years, hence the name.

More recently new discoveries are pushing that back prior to 12,000 years ago.

Who knows what will be found in the future?

Now, I have lived in the Midlands since I was 8 years old, 1956 to be exact.

I’ve traveled all over the area from Lower Richland to the boondocks of Lexington County but never heard of the site until three years ago when my friends, Doug Patterson and Otis Stewart, invited me and some others to take a tour of the site. They have been tour guides for the sites.

A group of about 15 of us got the grand tour of the two major sites, Congaree Creek battle site and Fort Congaree. That tour hooked me, immediately.

Now, I am a tour guide for the Civil War Battle of Congaree Creek and, ocassionally, the Fort Congaree tour.

Let’s go back a few years to the origins of the park.

The property was donated to the City of Cayce by SCANA. There had been a few archeological digs around the Fort Congaree site that uncovered artifacts from multiple eras, so the River Alliance

civil war with emphasis on their culture and beliefs. It is led by two local men with Cherokee and Choctaw heritage.

• The forth tour is the natural history tour which examines the plant and animal life in that area with an emphasis on all of the natural resources and the history of the property.

All of the tours will give you a good understanding of real everyday history in our own backyard.

The tours run through May 5.

The one thing missing is a visitor center to enhance the overall experience for future visitors.

It’s a Dog’s Life Tempermental Filly A Kentucky horse breeder had a filly that won every race in which she was entered, but as she got older she became very temperamental.

He soon found that when he raced her in the evening, she would win handily, but when she raced during the day she would come in dead last.

He consulted the top veterinarians and horse psychologists to no avail.

He finally had to give up because it had become a real night mare.

The Healing Angel Three guys were fishing in a lake one day, when an angel appeared in the boat.

When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked the angel humbly, “I’ve suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War ...

Town of Chapin officlas prepare to break ground for a new $14 million

They had been waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft’s sewage holding tank.

The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving, and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out.

The Aircraft Commander berated the Airman for his lack of speed and promised to pursue punitive action.

The Airman responded, “Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I am stationed in Thule, Greenland, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you planning to do to punish me?”

After delivery, the medical team began testing and measuring my new son.

My husband, a CPA in corporate finance who’d been quiet up to this point, could contain himself no longer.

“How about that!” my husband exclaimed happily.

Growth Spurt My son was only 5 feet, 8 inches tall when he left for college in the fall.

He worked through the Christmas holidays and didn’t return home again until the February break.

When he got off the plane, I was stunned at how much taller he looked.

Measuring him at home, I discovered he now stood at 5 feet, 11 inches.

He was as surprised as I. “Couldn’t you tell by your clothes that you’d grown?” I asked him.

“Since I’ve been doing my own laundry,” he replied, “I just figured everything had shrunk.”

Chapin breaks ground for $14M sewer plant

Chapin’s new $14 million sewer treatment plant construction is underway.

Town officials took shovels in the ceremonial ground breaking to signal to start the construction last week.

Mayor David Knight welcomed everyone to “this historic expansion and thanked utility department director Andy Metts and his employees.

Jen Moore of M.B. Kahn Construction said the 2.4 million gallon a day plant will double the town’s daily capacity.

The new plant will result in less pollution and aid

growth, officials said.

The present sewer plant serves around 4,000 customers.

The former town administration approved 1,000 more sewer taps, pushing the plant beyond its capacity.

Councilman Al Koon said the new plant will serve about 8,000 customers.

A potential growth of 4,000 more customers and homes in Chapin in the next few years concerns many residents because of traffic on already crowded two-lane roads.

“It is my sincere hope that the plant is not used as a primary tool to spur out-of-control residen-

tial growth as these kinds of projects have done in other communities,” said Councilman Preston Baines.

Metts said sewer taps already sold to developers in 2017-2018 will help pay for the $14 million plant.

Most of these developments from Mungo, Fortress Builders, D.R Horton, Great Southern Homes, and others are in the design review stages and have not started construction.

M.B. Kahn will build the plant designed by the Hussey Gay and Bell engineering firm. The project is expected to be complete in 2019.

Perfect Easter Eggs 1. Bring eggs to room temperature.

2. Place eggs in room temperature water in a large pot.

3. Bring to a boil, then turn down to a low boil for 12 minutes.

4. Quickly chill the eggs in ice-cold water.

5. To decorate successfully, the eggs must be completely cool and dry.

6. Hard-cooked eggs should be kept refrigerated and used within one week.

NOTE: The greenish color around

Did you set your clock forward an hour last Sunday?

Should we keep doing it or end daylight savings time?

A few state lawmakers are considering it.

State Sen. Harvey Peeler’s proposal would have a Senate committee look into its economic consequences.

Peeler said he doesn’t care if DST is abolished or is made year-round as long as people don’t have to change their clocks twice a year.

Sen. Katrina Shealy, RLexington, favors ending it, calling it a “no-brainer.”

Peeler said the change would make sense only if neighboring states do it.

Otherwise, we would be in a different time from Georgia and North Carolina from March to November.

Critics say it saves nothing and may cost more.

It was supposed to make it seem like there’s more light during the day.

There won’t be although here it will remain light until 9 p.m. this summer.

Critics say it will actually rob you of hours of sleep.

Daylight Saving Time was

created during World War I to decrease energy use.

Not waking up in the dark, the thinking went, would decrease fuel use and help conserve energy.

But nearly a century later, we are a divided nation on many issues including DST. A Rasmussen survey of 1,000 American adults found that 45% of adults think it’s worth it. More than 40% say it’s not.

Standardtime.com and other groups are trying to abolish it altogether.

More than 136,000 people have petitioned Congress to end Daylight Savings Time. Most of the 73,000 comments are vicious.

According to Michael Downing, the author of “Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of DaylightSavings Time,” studies found no evidence that DST actually decreases energy use.

In fact, it may increase our energy use.

Indiana found people used less electricity for light yet the gains were negated by air conditioning use.

At 6 p.m., it feels more like 5 p.m. when the sun still shines brightly in summer and homes haven’t had a chance to cool off.
