Tricked into leaving their dog walker, Max ends up on a cross-borough journey to find his way back home, evading animal control and the embittered gang of sewer-dwelling critters abandoned by their owners and lead by a furious bunny (Kevin Hart).

The cast of comedic voice actors assembled here is truly impressive. Jenny Slate wins as a pumped up Pomeranian who attaches herself to Max's cause.

Al Brooks, Bobby Moynihan and Lake Bell also make great talking animals.

Illumination Studios (Despicable Me, plus the sequels and Minions spin-off) has a long way to go before

fifth installment, Matt Damon's forgetful secret agent is still kicking, but it's not entirely clear why ... or why we need to continue caring.

Bourne, now lying low in Greece, finds out that his father was apparently involved in the sinister government program that made him a killing machine.

Now on a renewed quest for the truth and targeted by yet another wrinkled spymaster (Tommy Lee Jones in this one), Bourne once again must punch, drive and shoot his way to the answers he seeks.

Director Paul Greengrass re-takes the reins for this one, but there's no bringing this character back to the excitement and urgency of the first movies. The action set-pieces are still bare-knuckled and satisfying, especially the vehicular mayhem in Las Vegas.

PUBLIC NOTICE TOWN OF GASTON GENERAL ELECTION Notice is hereby given that a General Election for the Town of Gaston shall be held Tuesday, January 24, 2017 for electing one Mayor and two Council members.

Rock Out for Pink Out Thank you to Lexington–Richland School District 5’s Spring Hill High School students who raised more than $4,000 on Friday, October 28 for the Lexington Medical Center Foundation’s breast cancer programs by selling t-shirts and collecting donations in their “Rock Out for Pink Out” fundraiser, which was led by Spring Hill’s DECA student group.

Dr. Samantha Morton represented Carolina Women’s Physicians at the fundraiser and spoke about the importance of early detection. Barbara Willm, Vice President of Development and Community Relations at Lexington Medical Center, attended the assembly and thanked the student body for their hard work!

Lexington Medical Center Foundation provides many services for women with breast cancer including providing wigs, prosthetics and mastectomy bras as well as wellness workouts, medication and financial assistance. These programs relieve financial burden and stresses so patients can focus on healing.

Cardio for a Cure

Cardio for a Cure was held on October 25, 2016 at 4:30pm at LMC-Health Directions as a fundraiser and breast cancer awareness event. This fun-filled 60-minute workout was offered to all Health Directions members, family, and friends of all fitness levels. Participants also raised $140 in donations for the Crystal Smith Breast Cancer Fund. Health Direc-

tions fitness instructor Vicki Beatty initiated this fundraiser in 2015 and has led the event both years. Vicki is a 16-year breast cancer survivor and has also hosted Cardio for the Cure events at her church for the past six years to raise money for cancer research.

the Atlantic from England, their food choices were limited. The pantries aboard the Mayflower were full of food that would not rot during the journey, but wasn’t very good for their teeth. It included dried meats and fruits, beans, grains, cheese, beer, and a whole lot of hardtack. Hardtack is a dry biscuit whose ingredients include flour, water, and salt. While the Pilgrims were making their way to freedom and surviving on what food they had, despite its damaging effects to their teeth, the Native Americans were eating a much healthier, fresher diet, which helped keep their teeth in better shape.

The Native Americans knew the land they lived on and used that knowledge to their advantage, especially when it came to food. They were hunters, gatherers, and farmers, and ate a well-balanced meal of meat, nuts, berries, and veggies. Since oral health isn’t based on brushing and flossing habits alone, but also results from a good diet, the Native Americans naturally had healthier smiles.

Now that we have the luxury of modern dentistry and technology, like checkups, fillings, and actual toothbrushes (along with a multitude of flavored toothpastes), our oral health has become much better than that of both the Native Americans and Pil-

Quarterback Dutch Fork still unbeaten; W.W. King falls short

The Chronicle Country "undefeated club” was occupied by three teams for most of the season.

Now it has a sole survivor.

Dutch Fork High continued its historic undefeated run with a 27-7 win over Ashley Ridge in the opening round of the S.C. High School League Class 5A playoffs.

The Silver Foxes actually trailed 7-0 at halftime before blanking the Swamp Foxes in the second half to improve to 12-0 on the season.

Now four wins shy of a perfect season, Dutch Fork meets a familiar foe this Friday in Summerville.

The two teams met in the opening round of last year’s Class 4A Division I playoffs and Week Two of this season.

The Silver Foxes won both games.

"Road Warriors” Dutch Fork joined Airport, Brookland-Cayce and Gilbert as first-round winners at home.

Lexington, White Knoll and Batesburg-Leesville pulled opening round upsets.

The Lexington Wildcats stunned Sumter in overtime 29-28.

The White Knoll Timberwolves upended Wando 21-13 to set up a second-round rematch with Lexington in the Wolf’s Den. White Knoll won the regular-season meeting this year but lost to Lexington in their last playoff meeting two years ago.

The B-L Panthers continued the run of road wins of Chronicle Country teams with a 48-0 rout of Academic Magnet. They look to continue that success at Andrews.

The Shift to Fear Free The Pet Doctor 359-6611

his month I am continuing the discussion on trying to decrease the fear and stress your pet and you feel on making a visit to the veterinarian. We are trying to take the “pet” out of petrified in the fear free concept.

The biggest goal is to make it a positive experience. One reason we ask you not to feed breakfast or only give a small snack is so we can use treats to help distract your pet from what is happening during the exam.

If your pet has a medical issue and needs to be fed, by all means stick to the normal routine. One thing that can also help is to bring favorite treats or toys to the visit. Last month I was giving tips on bringing your cat to the hospital. This month we will focus on your dog’s visit.

Ideally you want to restrain your pet in the car or truck.

Unrestrained pets can move and cause an accident. They may become distressed if they are slipping on the seats or being tossed around in the car. They could get lost in the event of an auto accident. The Center for Pet Safety has certified different harnesses that work and more information on pet restraint devices. Look for the logo “Center for Pet Safety Certified”. Their website is www.centerforpetsafety. org.

Just like I discussed about cats, you want to get your dog used to the carrier. You can use the same techniques such as leaving the carrier out all the time, putting treats or food in and around the carrier. You would like your dog to treat it like his or her own dog house.

It is best to use a crate or carrier for small dogs that are sized for a small dog.

You want to make sure the bottom has a nonslip surface and place a towel or blanket in the carrier.

It should be placed on the floor behind the passenger seat if possible.

You should not place the carrier near any air bags. For larger dogs or

if you don’t have a carrier, you can use a harness or a seat belt. You want to use the back seat and remember to never leave a seat belted dog unattended.

You should work on conditioning your dog to a seat belt or harness at home and then in a stationary car before starting with short car rides.

You should practice rewarding for calm behavior in the car with high value treats or toys. You should not force your dog into a restraint device or punish him or her if they show signs of fear, anxiety, or stress.

You should not force your dog into the car if he or she is showing any signs of aggression. Body language, panting, drooling, vocalizing, urinating, and defecating are all signs of fear, anxiety, and stress.

Once in the car you should play quiet, calm music or nothing at all.

You want to avoid loud startling noises. You should use the dog calming pheromone, Adaptil, wiped or sprayed on and in the carrier, on any towel or blanket used in transport, and on the car seat.

This should be applied 15-30 minutes before it is time to leave. You should not rush or drive aggressively on your way to the veterinarian. Avoid using baby talk with your pet as this actually worsens any fear or anxiety they are feeling. You should reward calm and relaxed behavior in the car.

If you notice your pet becoming overly stressed you should alert your veterinarian as it may be best to reschedule. Just like with our cats, your dog may need a canine stress package.

Once the visit is completed whether for a cat or dog, you must now get them home.

If any sedation was used, you want to provide a safe and quiet room at home for recovery.

Wait to re-introduce your pet to other cats, dogs, or kids until they are completely recovered and back to normal.

Aggression can be a common problem between dogs or between cats when re-introducing them back into the home even after a short departure.

For dogs you should remove toys or food that can encourage competition. Don’t encourage any high arousal play and maybe even have the other dogs outside when you first get home.

For your cat returning home, rub them with a piece of your clothing and provide a sanctuary room where the door can be closed. You should pay attention to the body language of your pets to make sure there will be

no issues.

When you actually call to make your appointment you should let the staff know if there are things that trigger fear, anxiety, and stress in your pet.

This can be varied from being in the carrier, the car, carsickness, other patients in the hospital, having their temperature taken, or individuals they don’t like.

This way they can make suggestions or have another staff member to call and go over in more detail what can be done to help the situation.

I’m not saying we can eliminate all issues for your pet, but at least we can start making the visit better for both of you.

It is important that there is good communication between you and your veterinarian and their staff so everyone is working toward a calmer visit.

The Dam Run: Busy mom finds time to write V. A. Riccasola prides herself in being the mother of two teenaged boys, a daughter, sister, friend, career woman, writer, runner, kickboxer, fad dieter, pseudonutritionist, home school teacher, cook, amateur political debater, public speaker, small-time daredevil and home maker.

Here she talks about her new book, “The Dam Run,” with Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bellune.

Q. Tell us first a bit about yourself.

A. I live in Lexington County and work in public safety. I am passionate about challenges and adventures and love roller coasters, rappelling, no ropes rock climbing, spelunking, skiing, martial arts, motorcycle riding and Corvette racing.

I write from experiences in the northeast and southwest and am accumulating experiences in the American South.

I’ve had short, valuable careers in hospitality, real estate, the medical field and public safety.

I love to travel and write about personal and imagined experiences. I dedicate what little free time I have to writing.

Q. How do you get inspired

to write?

A. My muse is fickle, demanding and does not like to cooperate. All I know is the more I write the more it hounds me.

I have learned that it is important for me to take the time to write even when I am editing a project. If I do not take time to jot down thoughts, my muse takes a vacation.

Actually, it’s more like it packs a bag and moves out of the house. There is nothing worse than being in “edit mode” and then trying to force the muse to work when I am done editing.

Q. Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

A. My new book idea literally came to me while I was washing dishes. I was staring out the window and thinking about how running was no longer just exercise. It was stress relief. I thought about how I was beginning to love running. about finding the right place to run that inspired me and swept me away for a while. I wanted to share that feeling with my readers.

By that time the muse is so mad that it was ignored it refuses to even help me write a grocery list. My muse likes to be pampered.

Q. What’s your advice for

aspiring writers is getting their muse to work?

A. My advice is to just write. Write when you’re happy and write when you’re sad. Write any time a thought jumps into your head, even if all you have is a few lines or a simple one liner that you felt was particularly witty. Save your thoughts on paper or in an app. Never let a good thought go.

The worst thing is having a great inspiration descend upon you only to forget it because you didn’t take time to preserve it.

Not everything you write will make it into your novels, but it will all inspire you.

Q. What have you found is the best thing about being a writer?

A. The best thing about being a writer is learning.

I ponder and analyze everything to see what I can take from it to write about.

I people watch and design characters from my observations.

If there is something I cannot observe, and I need to know about it, I get to do actual, good ole fashioned research, with the help of Google.

Q. How do you deal with writer’s block?

A. I get writer’s block when life gets too busy so I make time to do something out of the ordinary. It also helps to ignore the social media that clogs my thoughts.

I will take a break, even for just the afternoon, and get out of my house, away from my job, away from social media, leave the phone in the car and just breathe. Most of my favorite things to fill that time have to do with getting outside. I like to go to parks or lakes.

King Academy students, faculty, and staff have been busy with many wonderful events and activities.

From our students attending the FCA Middle School Retreat to inducting new members into our Junior and Senior Beta Clubs, we have had a great time together.

WKA Middle School students embarked on their journey to the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) Retreat in Black Mountain, North Carolina making ma-

ny memories along the way.

The retreat provided a great time of praise and worship as everyone joined together to grow closer to God. We are thankful for these opportunities for our students and also that we can worship and glorify Christ on a daily basis at our school.

WKA celebrated our students and their accomplishments with a tapping ceremony for eligible middle and high school students into our Junior and Senior Beta Clubs.

It was a very meaningful ceremony as the students lit candles that symbolized the beliefs of the National Beta Club and welcomed new students to the Clubs.

These beliefs represent loyalty, encouragement, love, and honesty to each another.

The promise to lay aside petty jealousies and work loyally and earnestly to become better citizens were also characterized.

Who was Booth’s mystery woman?

n Good Friday 1865, a man entered his room in Washington’s National Hotel. He would be leaving on a one-way trip in a few hours and had to prepare.

He filled one pocket with things you’d expect: a key ring, a compass, a pocket dairy, even a whistle in case he got lost in the woods. In the other pocket he placed a knife and a single shot Derringer pistol.

But before he could depart,

he had to stop at Ford’s Theatre first.

Tucked inside the dairy were photos of five women.

The identity of one was lost for decades. When her name finally became known, it raised questions.

This is the story of John Wilkes Booth’s “Mysterious Beauty.”

Any schoolchild can tell you, “An actor shot Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865.” While true, there’s much more to it than that.

Booth was not just “an actor.” He was a big star. In 1865, hearing that John Wilkes Booth had murdered President Lincoln would be like learning today that Tom Cruise had assassinated President Obama. It was a celebrity-on-celebrity crime.

Booth’s plan was simple: shoot Lincoln from behind, leap down to the stage, hop on a horse waiting in the alley behind the theatre and ride South. Which explains why he had packed light.

Booth was tracked down and shot in rural Virginia 12 days later. The contents of his pockets were rushed to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton back in Washington.

Their existence was only made public two years later when Stanton released a statement mentioning the dairy and photos “of several females.” They remained boxed up in the Judge Advocate’s office and hidden from view.

The first newspaper account about them came in 1884, casually mentioning “...five photographs of young women, presumably actresses.”

In 1891, another journalist got a close look at Booth’s belongings. He tried to identify each woman by name in his report.

One bears special mention.

Lucy Hale was 24 years-old in 1865 and a favorite among Washington’s wartime bachelors.

The title of a 1970 American Heritage article perfectly describes her social life: “They All Loved Lucy.” Although she was “stout” (the word contemporaries often used to describe her ample physique) she was also vivacious, chatty and, as New Hampshire Senator John Hale’s daughter, connected to the upper strata of Washington society.

Lincoln’s personal secretary and future Secretary of State John Hay, future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and even Robert Todd Lincoln, the president’s eldest son, all courted her.

Also among her suitors — the dashing John Wilkes Booth. In fact, Lucy had secured his ticket to Lincoln’s Second Inauguration ceremony six weeks earlier.

There’s an enduring claim (based on very scanty historical evidence) that Lucy and Booth were secretly engaged to marry. I don’t buy it. Booth used anyone who could advance his schemes.

stunningly lovely, they never learned her name. At some point someone wrote in pencil beneath her image, “The Mysterious Beauty.” (By the 1930s those words had been erased, though traces are still visible.)

So just who was she?

Sometime around the early 20th Century she was finally identified. Her name was Fanny Brown, yet another actress who, while not as famous as Booth, was still well-known in her day.

Indeed, The New York Clipper newspaper printed the following in its celebrity section on November 28, 1863: “Rumor says that J. Wilkes Booth will shortly lead to the hymenial (marriage) altar the beautiful and fascinating Fanny Brown. Where’s Dolly?”

While word of a possible Booth wedding was serious enough to make it into print, the second line mentioning a different woman also reveals Booth fame as a ladies’ man. He was catnip to women, who practically lined up to surrender their hearts to him.

All five photos are now on display in the Ford’s Theatre Museum. Exactly what did each woman mean to Booth?

We’ll never know for sure.

He took the answer to his grave.

Today they silently stare at us from the 19th Century, keeping historians guessing about the role each played in the life of America’s greatest villain.

The mysterious beauty whose photo John Wilkes Booth carried with him at the time of his death was later identified as Fanny Brown, a prominent actress from Booth’s days on stage.

I maintain he made Lucy believe they were engaged; otherwise, why was he carrying pictures of four other women on a trip he knew might likely end in his death?

Effie Germon was an actress who, on the night of Lincoln’s assassination, starred in Aladdin or The Wonderful Lamp at Washington’s other major theater where Lincoln’s youngest

son Tad was watching. (The reporter was unkind in that 1891 article writing, “Miss Germon, if still living, is now an old woman and they say she is fat.”)

Actresses Alice Grey and Helen Western appeared in the third and fourth images.

But it was the fifth photo that stumped investigators.

Lunch Plans Two robins were sitting in a tree.

“I’m really hungry,” said the first one.

“Me, too,” said the second.

“Let’s fly down and find some lunch.”

They flew down and found a nice plot of plowed ground full of worms. They ate and ate and ate and ate until they couldn’t eat anymore.

“I’m so full I don’t think I can fly back up to the tree,” said the first robin.

“Me either,” said the second

They had barely fallen asleep when a big, fat tomcat sneaked up and gobbled both of them down.

Playing House Two little children, a boy and a girl, walked hand-inhand to a neighbor’s house.

The little girl stood on

her tiptoes and just able to reach the doorbell.

Then, an elderly lady greeted them at the front door.

“Good morning, children,” she said. “What can I do for you?”

“We’re playing house,” the little girl answered. “This is my husband and I’m his wife. Can we come in?”

Thoroughly enchanted by the scene, the elderly lady replied, “By all means, do come in.”

Once inside, she offered the children lemonade and cookies, which they graciously accepted. When a

second tall glass of lemonade was offered, the little girl politely declined.

“No thank you,” she said.

“We have to go now. My husband just wet his pants.”

Coffee Recipe A little boy surprised his grandmother one morning and brought her a cup of coffee.

He made it himself and was so proud. He anxiously waited to hear the verdict on the quality of the coffee.

As she reached the bottom, she noticed three of those little green army guys in the bottom of the cup.
