Taylor recognized as a Guardian Ad Litem child advocate

West Columbia’s Jane Taylor has been awarded for her 25 years of service as a Guardian Ad Litem child advocate.

“I think it’s my call,” said Taylor of her service to children in crisis.

She received a letter from Gov. Nikki Haley, recognizing her for her years of Guardian Ad Litem service at the June Lexington School District Two Board meeting. Taylor has been a district employee for 33 years.

Taylor was also given a commemorative plaque from Northside Middle School.

“Working in the schools, I see the children. It made me realize that sometimes a child needs to have a voice,” Taylor said.

Family courts appoint Guardian Ad Litem volunteers to represent the interests of children in the state investigation of a child’s welfare.

The abuse and neglect cases Taylor is called in to work come from the S.C. Department of Social Services.

“Our job is to protect the well-being of the child and to act in their interest,” said Taylor.

Part of the task of a Guardian Ad Litem rep is to visit a child’s home, talk with doctors and counselors, to identify what is going on in the child’s life.

Some of the children are placed in shelters, group homes or foster care.

Taylor also has to present a report to the court. Through the whole process, Taylor is assigned to the child.

She is required to meet with the child, in-person, once a month.

“I visit way more than that,” Taylor said.

The children she sees range in age from infants to 14-or-15.

Taylor said in her experience, she has witnessed many factors that cause stress in a home. And some parents may not be equipped to deal with their responsibility.

Factors like drug abuse, alcohol and other addictions result in negative outcomes for children, Taylor said.

And that’s not all.

“Financial problems create a lot of turmoil,” said Taylor. She said parents who are too young to have children do not have the means to take care of them. Because of dependency, Taylor said a parent may let a negative influence into the home.

She said during the time a child is assigned to a Guardian Ad Litem representative, parents can take parenting classes and get help dealing with issues that cause the stress or bad behavior in their lives.

In the end, an intact family is the goal.

“Children always want to go back home to their families. God put that bond there.

That bond is strong.

Unification is the best thing for them. The best thing for a child is to be with the parents,” Taylor said.

She said while there are more temptations in our society for parents, there is more mandated reporting of abuse, too.

She said people may have overlooked signs

in the past. But now they are required by law to report what they suspect. School is one place where an adult may see red flags.

At Northside Middle, where Taylor is the school’s Registrar, she has the full support of staff for her role in the lives of children.

“Phenomenal,” is how NMS Principal Lisa Davis described Taylor’s work with Guardian Ad Litem.

Davis said Taylor works in the best interest of children, every day.

“She is a compassionate, caring and just person,” Davis said. “She

believes in doing what is right for the child, always.”

For Taylor to get involved was not the easiest route. Her husband, attorney Anthony Taylor, was not too sure becoming a Guardian Ad Litem was advised.

Still, Taylor said she’d do it all over again, and she plans to be a Guardian Ad Litem for as long as she can. “It’s very fulfilling,” Taylor said.

OK, smarty, who was the 1st Gamecock?

USC’s Gamecocks got name from real fighter

boldness and brilliance as a commander usually produced victories, sometimes against implausible odds.

Even the enemy was impressed by his courage.

One unnamed British general said Sumter “fought like a gamecock” and Lord Charles Cornwallis, the British commander in the southern colonies, paid him tribute when he described him as his greatest plague.

In an encounter with Col. Banastre Tarleton’s British dragoons at Blackstock’s Plantation in Union County, Sumter was severely wounded but would not stop fighting.

Historians write that his most significant achievement was to disrupt British supply and communication lines by attacking posts at river ferries and fords.

any visitors to this historic fort in Charleston harbor have no idea where its name came from.

Many University of South Carolina sports fans have no idea why the teams they root for, win or lose, are called the “Fighting Gamecocks” more than a century.

Betting on savage cock fights was brought to America from Europe with other violent pastimes including bare-knuckle fighting, according to occasional Chronicle feature writer and author Dan Harmon.

Carolina took its teams’ nickname from Gen. Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero and statesman.

Sumter was called the “Fighting Gamecock” because of his vicious harassment of British occupation forces and loyalists to British King George.

Fort Sumter in Charleston was named in his honor as were Sumter County, the City of Sumter and Sumter National Forest.

In the beginning

Sumter was born July 14, 1734, to a poor settler family in rural Virginia.

According to Dan Harmon’s account, as a teenager, Sumter joined the area militia, became a sergeant and distinguished himself in the Indian wars.

In 1767, Sumter moved his family to the High Hills of the Santee River, a hilly area in the coastal plain.

Sumter was one of the fiercest fighters the British faced in the Carolinas with his daring raids on their supply lines.

He and his wife Mary, a wealthy widow, became successful farmers and operated a sawmill, general store and grist mill.

Based on his war experience, he was elected commander of the local militia.

When the American Revolution broke out, the Continental Congress asked Sumter to take over a rifle regiment, one of six in South Carolina, with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Sumter resigned his commission in 1778 and returned to his home. He did not want to fight the British. But that changed.

An enemy mistake

Two years later, British marauders burned his home and left his disabled wife alone on their lawn in her wheelchair.

This forged his commitment to ferocious guerrilla tactics which would earn him the famous nickname “Fighting Gamecock.”

The character Mel Gibson played in the movie, “The Patriot,” was based in part on Sumter’s daring raids as well as elements of the stories of Francis “The Swamp Fox” Marion and Andrew “Wizard Owl” Pickens.

Although at one point he had to flee to North Carolina, he soon returned with a vengeance and organized a formidable militia brigade.

Highly imaginative, Sumter was always the grand strategist, instinctively using his men and the terrain to baffle the enemy.

“He was a daring tactician, leading raw militia in hand-to-hand fighting with British regulars,” wrote Robert D. Bass, in his biography “Gamecock.”

Bass wrote that Sumter “fought in berserk abandon, reckless of his own life and prodigal with the lives of his men.”
