Quick action saves boat builder’s life

They had seconds to save Tim Downs’ life.

Downs, a Tidewater Boats employee, had a heart attack and went into cardiac arrest while working on a boat at the Lexington factory Jan. 29.

Two fellow employees, Rene Castro and Airflax “Flex” Crumpton, quickly sprang into action and performed CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).

Within minutes, an ambulance arrived and Downs was rushed to the hospital.

Doctors quickly found that Downs had undigested food in his lungs and was taken into surgery. They suspected the food was pushed into his lungs when CPR was performed What was supposed to be a 20 to 30 minute procedure took more than three hours.

times because his condition became unstable.

Dr. Linda Perkins said she had never seen someone with “so much undigested food before.”

Unable to remove all the food, they tried again the next day. The surgery was successful.

Amazingly, Perkins said Downs was responding to simple commands and breathing on his own by Wednesday.

He has lost 20 pounds, but is out of the hospital and slowly recovering.

He has been working light shifts the past week.

Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels have steadily risen to 356.96 (full pool is 360.00). Morning water temperatures are in the lower 50s over much of the lake, but it’s not unusual to see temperatures push into the mid-50s on warm days.

The mud at the top of the lake has mostly settled out and so even in the rivers there is 1.5-2 feet visibility. The rest of the lake is clearer.

As one would expect with rising temperatures at this time of year, veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that bass are starting to move up.

While it’s been warm the sun hasn’t been out very much, but with sunny conditions things will accelerate.

Two weeks ago water temperatures were approximately 47 degrees, and so there has been a pretty significant change pretty fast.

Fish are just starting to stage on secondary points and rocky places, and generally getting out of the suspended deal and more onto the bottom.

Basically, they’re getting out of winter patterns and starting to act like they

should in mid-February, moving towards the bank and getting pretty near their spawning areas.

At the end of February last year, fish were already spawning, but water temperatures got lower this winter.

Doug does not expect fish to be spawning on the first full moon in March, but if temperatures stay as warm as projected it’s not impossible.

When morning surface temperatures hit 55-57 degrees there will be some fish trying to spawn in clear, protected areas – and often they will be bigger fish.

For now, there is still a crankbait bite the first couple of hours of the day that is generally over by 10 a.m., and then on sunny days, you need to look around shady banks or under docks.

Shakey heads are still working pretty well and you can also fish an Alabama rig around docks.

On the striped bass front, Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that some fish did move down the lake towards Dreher Island escaping the mud line, but overall the dirty water settled out very

quickly and the river has now cleared up well.

They are back to catching lots of fish on bucktail/ ice fly double rigs, and this morning he saw birds and striper working schools of bait. The Big Saluda has

While water temperatures are still in the low 50s, once we get some sun Brad expects the pattern to begin to change pretty quickly.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that the pattern is still the same but the fishing has just gotten a lot better.

There have been some very nice catches in the rivers. Most of the crappie are

still in 10-12 feet of water or less, and they are getting shallower. Tight-lining minnows and jigs is still the best pattern.

I was just a newspaper editor from Philadelphia. She and Fred had lived on both coasts and Diane was famous for the songs she had written for stage and movie stars.

For more than an hour the little cab traversed the mount’s streets, turning here and there.

It was clear our driver had lied to us. He had no more idea where to find the tree than we did.

Suddenly, like a man possessed, Fred shouted to the driver, “Turn here. I have a feeling this is it.”

The driver braked, backed up and turned into the narrow street.

We drove perhaps a hundred yards and came to the end at a cul de sac. There before us stood the stone wall and the olive tree, just as they appeared in the photograph Ruth’s husband had given them.

Granddad’s cow-charming ’65 Chevy: Part Two

G

randdad Poland farmed but never drove a pickup, not that I recall.

In a battered old car, he’d bump through pastures festooned with yellow bitter weeds, clunk past a lonely persimmon tree and ranks of white-faced cattle.

Herefords, they were.

From afar, those cows would amble Granddad’s way and when his jalopy closed in they would break into a stiffkneed trot. To see the old man’s car was to see feed and hay.

That car and some outbuildings are the only things left from my farm-exploring childhood.

Granddad’s dead. Grandmom’s dead (All my life I called her “Bama,” the residue of childhood speech issues).

The home place burned.

My childhood friends are grown and gone, and I have changed so much that sometimes, I don’t even know who I am anymore.

And Granddad’s last car?

I figured that car had long gone to the scrap pile.

Granddad died in 1972, and I figured I’d never see that car again, but I never forgot it.

And then, lo and behold!

On Feb. 18, 2018, when I was walking his old farm taking pictures and recalling things, I couldn’t believe my eyes: There it was.

His “Bel Air” pickup was sleeping in a sepulcher of cedars and vines, which had grown around it.

Like a heart ripped from its body, the old battery sits on the ground still.

It’s there. See for yourself.

I guess we have come full circle.

If you are noting increased shedding and don’t feel your pet is being stressed, it is likely time to see your veterinarian. Thinning of the hair coat and/or true areas of hair loss usually indicate a medical problem.

Other signs of problems include redness, itching, scabbing, or a change in how your pet feels.

The list is long of diseases that can cause hair loss; but they fall into 4 major categories: infectious, hormonal, immunemediated or autoimmune, and other.

Your veterinarian will need to perform a physical exam to decide what additional testing may be needed.

For normal shedding don’t be disheartened. It is a fact of a dog or cat’s life.

Brushing helps you control when and where the hair is shed. If you can’t brush, then having a good vacuum cleaner can help.

The other common question I am asked concerns the protein content of the pet food. The la-

bel on a pet food shows “crude” protein. This is actually a calculated estimate based on laboratory testing to determine the total nitrogen content of the food.

This number is then divided by the average nitrogen content of proteins. The reason it is done this way it that carbohydrates, fats, fiber, and supplements contain nonprotein nitrogen.

This will actually increase the estimate for “crude” protein.

That is why labels only list the guaranteed minimum “crude” protein. It does not mean it is the actual protein content in the food.

Another important fact is that animals need essential amino acids from the diet and not protein.

There is no “perfect” protein ingredient for dogs or cats.

Dogs and cats need many different protein ingredients to meet their essential amino acid re-

quirements.

These essential amino acids are needed for growth, pregnancy, normal maintenance, and to avoid disease. Some essential amino acids are synthesized and added to the diets such as taurine, which is need for heart health in dogs and cats.

Feeding trials are the only way to really know if a food has adequate protein to provide the essential amino acids. This information about a food is on the nutrition label.

It will say it was tested through feeding trials or studies.

If it says it is a formulated diet, then it was made in a laboratory and passed laboratory testing.

It was not fed to dogs or cats for 6 months to see how their bodies responded to the diet.

The feeding trials give better proof that the amino acid content was available for your pet. The “crude” protein number does not give the same

assurance.

In the case of pets with medical problems, they may be given a diet with a low “crude” protein but yet it has readily available amino acids.

This is where a high quality, easily digestible ingredient is being used so the impact on organs such as liver or kidney is minimized. In the healthy cat or dog, high protein diets don’t really provide any advantage.

In fact, high protein foods will cost more to feed as the protein ingredients are the main reason for a pet food’s cost.

There isn’t room on the label to list the amino acid content.

However, pet food manufacturers can opt to list amino acid content online or in company product guides.

You can also call the company to ask for that information.

Ask your veterinarian for help if you have questions.

Gladys Dunn was new in town and decided to visit the church nearest to her new apartment.

She appreciated the pretty sanctuary and the music by the choir, but the sermon went on and on.

Worse, it wasn’t very interesting.

Glancing around, she saw many in the congregation nodding off.

Finally, it was over.

After the service, she turned to a still sleepy-looking gentleman next to her, extended her hand and said, “I’m Gladys Dunn.”

He replied, “You and me both.”

Homemade microwave meals are time-savers

3. Combine the tomato sauce, salsa, salt, pepper and brown sugar. Mix well and pour over peppers.

4. Cover tightly with microwave-safe plastic wrap; fold back small edge for steam to escape. Microwave on HIGH 12 to 15 minutes, until the filling is hot and pepper is almost tender. Let stand 6 to 8 minutes. Sprinkle peppers with the remaining cheese. Serve with a side of rice and a salad.

A connection between ailments: Gum disease can worsen arthritis F

or years, dentists and cardiologists have talked about the links between gum disease and heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular problems.

Some research has shown improvement in RA symptoms following successful perio treatment. This is likely due to the reduction in the oral contribution to the total inflammatory burden, following the favorable perio treatment outcome.

Dental infections can come from an infected root canal tooth, gum disease or sites of previously extracted teeth. Bacteria, viruses and fungi or any combination plus degenerating protein substances from tooth structures produce toxins which circulate throughout the entire body.

Concentration of poisonous substances within a knee, hand, finger or other joint will cause inflammation.

This was true in the case where a bad root canal worsened a patient’s rheumatoid arthritis!

Before the onset of her RA, the patient had a root canal treatment performed on an upper left lateral incisor.

This seemingly innocuous dental procedure resulted in a streptococcus infection that remained present for 34 years.

An x-ray of the treated tooth showed no visible pathology.

Unfortunately a high percentage of root canal treated teeth (75% or more) that become infected, exhibit none of the usual clinical signs and symptoms of pain, swelling or redness yet spew out their toxic waste prod-

ucts that affect distant sites.

Following two treatment sessions, the patient’s rheumatoid arthritis resolved by 90%. No additional therapy was instituted at the time of treatment.

This patient has regained a pain free quality of life.

The key factor was the removal of the underlying cause — infected root canal tooth — which started the release of tumor necrosis factor which lead to the cascade that resulted in worsening rheumatoid arthritis.

Interesting!

So, does a root canal cause your rheumatoid arthritis? Not by a long shot!

But, can your rheumatoid arthritis be worsened by the bacteria in your gum disease? Certainly!

“It’s a painless procedure, and it’s better to be checked than to ignore an issue that could have been preventable and, most importantly, curable.”

In general, people should have a colonoscopy at age 50.

Patients with a family history of colorectal cancer should talk to their doctor and begin screening earlier.

Sometimes, colorectal cancer may not cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include bleeding, abdominal pain or a change in bowel habits.

People with those symptoms should talk to their doctor, regardless of age.

While genetics may play a role in some colorectal cancer cases, most occur in someone with no family history of the disease.

Factors that increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer include tobacco and heavy alcohol use, consumption of red or processed meat, diabetes, obesity and a low-fiber diet.

Our hospital wants to raise awareness about the prevalence of colorectal cancer and ways to prevent it.

Blue lights will illuminate Lexington Medical Park 3 along Interstate 26 in West Columbia on the hospital campus throughout the month of March, which is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The best tool to screen for colorectal cancer is a colonoscopy, which is considered one of the most powerful tools in clinical medicine because of its ability to identify and remove polyps before they become cancerous.

Early detection and intervention can reduce mortality from colorectal cancer by up to 90%.

here’s more to it than just looking good. I get it; we all like to feel good in that bathing suit or favorite pair of jeans.

Around this time every year, there is a lot of hype out there about getting that beach body ready now.

You’ll see some (truly) unbelievable “before” and “after” photos that lead you to believe that you, too can drop 50 pounds in three weeks by joining this or that breakthrough program.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the hype, I believe in taking a different view on fitness. Your body enables you to do life. Developing a strong body that moves well is like building a strong foundation for your house.

It affects every move that you make. A strong, healthy body can enable you to take an active part in life; get off the couch, get outside to play with your kids or grandkids, get on the river and try out that kayak, or even just manage household chores without feeling sore the next day.

The problem with being sedentary is that those
