Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are up to 358.12 (full pool is 360.00).

Surface temperatures have dropped all the way back into the low- to mid50s. There is some color to the water but it is not dirty.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and the odds seem to be that it’ll be tough for a little while longer.

The absolute water temperature isn’t really the problem, but the fact that water temperatures have dropped almost every day this month seems to be putting off the bite.

Tournament weights have been very low for Murray at this time of year, and bites are hard to come by.

Veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown, who was bed fishing three weeks ago, reports that at this point most of the fish seemed to have pulled out to more like 6-10 feet of water.

A lot of people are sitting their boat in the depth where they need to be fishing.

Fish aren’t really relating to the bottom, with most of them seeming to be suspended in the water column.

Most of the fish seem to be relating to bait, and shallow-running crankbaits and jerkbaits were working better when herring and shad were shallower. They will

still catch some fish, but the bait seems to have pulled out.

As a result a lot of fish just aren’t very catchable right now – although they will still feed some.

For now, most of the fish seem to be related to the sides of points. Things should get better when temperatures warm.

As would be expected with the dropping water temperatures, Captain Brad Taylor (803-3311354) reports that striped bass have gotten deeper as the bait has pulled out.

The best numbers of fish seem to be mid-lake in the 20-30-foot range, and Hollow Creek, Crystal Lake and Bear Creek have all held fish. The best bet is covering water with weighted free-lines.

Crappie fishing has been really good, although Brad reports that the fish have also responded to the dropping water temperatures.

When it was so warm the fish moved into the creeks, and now they seem to have pulled out to the deepest part of those same creeks.

Trolling the middle of creeks up the rivers has resulted in some excellent catches, and anglers are generally fishing the deepest areas.

When water temperatures begin to reverse fish will move shallower again.

On the catfish front, Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that upand-down water temperatures have really put a hurting on the catfish action.

Fish are scattered out in 40-60 feet of water, and he only rates the bite as poor to fair. With dropping water temperatures, fish are confused about whether it’s spring or fall!

Lexington High’s boys tennis already making a racket

The Wildcats are 5-0 in Region 5-5A and undefeated on the road.

Only the 4-2 loss on March 20 to Class 4A Lower State runner-up A.C. Flora was the blemish so far in a 7-1 season. It was followed the next night by a 4-2 win over SCISA Class 3A champion Cardinal Newman.

“We have a lot of returning players from last year so that has helped with the experience and knowing what to expect this year,” head coach Alyssa Peterson said.

“The relationships these players have is great. We have great leadership on the team and they are all a “close-knit” group.

“The team is deep with many competitive players which

Daniel Mahoney has led the Wildcats in the number-one spot.

Peterson said his “sportsmanship on court reflects the type of leader he is” for the team.

Another senior providing leadership and motivation is Henry Sims. Among the underclassmen, junior Mehul Jain and freshman Patrick Cronin are undefeated this season in the region.

With a region title in sight, Lexington looks to finish the season strong and advance further in the playoffs.

With the post-season a month away, Peterson is taking a “one match at a time” approach.

“I’m expecting them to play smart, stay aggressive, and have a positive mindset each time they step out onto the court,” she said.

As a pitcher for Lexington High School, Jordan Buster was a integral part of the 2013 Class 4A state championship team.

"Jordan always had an electric arm and was as effective as anybody we had when he was in the zone," Lexington head baseball coach Brian Hucks said.

"He was a very important piece of our championship run in 2013 as a pitcher and a third baseman."

Five years later, the redshirt junior for the The Citadel picked up possibly the biggest win of his collegiate career.

Buster threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and a career-best five strikeouts to help the Bulldogs defeat the University of South Carolina 3-2 on March 20 at Founders' Park.

That performance, as well as a 2-inning, no-hits allowed, five strikeout effort in a 9-3 win over Western Carolina five nights later, earned Buster Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday. He's currently 3-1 on the season.

was the first over the Gamecocks since 2014 and first in Columbia since 2009.

The game was originally scheduled to take place in Charleston.

Greek Festival organizers also raise cash for charities

M

ost of us know about the annual Greek Festival's scrumptious food and festivities.

It is a major social and cultural event in Columbia.

Every year, thousands of people enjoy it, but some longtime residents may not know of two other efforts each year to raise funds for charitable causes.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbia has a group of 90-100 women members of the St. Katherine’s Philoptochas Society.

That word means “friend of the poor.” Their purpose is to be that friend in their community.

Their two annual bake sales are in the spring and before Christmas.

The one near Christmas isn’t on a certain day.

You order what you want from a list on their Facebook page and pick it up later.

It raises money for the Hellenic Community Fund which helps the poor with rent, food, utilities and occasionally medicine.

In the spring they raise funds for other local

charities such as: • The Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter which provides a loving home environment for kids taken from abusive homes.

• Harvest Hope Food bank, a major source of food for the poor.

• Lighthouse for Life that works to combat human trafficking.

They help other charities too, that help improve life for the poor.

The spring event this year will be the 71st-Annual Bake Sale and Luncheon.

Many hands are involved in baking delicious goodies and preparing food for the event.

It will be on the grounds of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 1931 Sumter St., Columbia Thursday, March 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Glory beneath the lights: A glory akin to gladiators

F

rom a box in my late parent’s dusty attic come memories.

Old football programs and yellow brittle newspapers.

A naked bulb gives me light to read as the roof turbine creaks, a metronome ticking away the seconds.

These programs, ten cents each, colors fresh still, amount to time capsules.

Memories flooded over me ... Bus rides to games, wearing white shirts and dark ties.

Inserting thigh pads, lacing up the shoulder pads, adjusting the chinstrap.

Taking the field, and more often than not taking the game.

Afterwards, coming home through the dark countryside I replayed the game in my mind.

It was important to remember these rare experiences ultimately to be forever taken away.

Home games were ritualistic. We’d eat pre-game meals at Jacksons’ Home Café.

Each meal was the same, a hamburger steak. Then we’d go to the gym and idle away time. Then dress in the locker room. Go through pre-game warm-ups, punting and catching, running plays ... then back to the gym for a final team meeting.

We’d line up in pairs and rush onto the field beneath those legendary Friday

Fabulous Easter Eggs from around the world

eatured in this article are three types of Easter Eggs; each a lasting tribute to skill of the maker, the sentiment of the day and the overall beauty that allowed each piece to be a joy for generations.

The first of these eggs are a group I purchased many years ago in NYC. These three realistic enamel eggs fit perfectly into the palm of your hand. Crafted near 1800, they feature a base of verdant blue and one of bright pink; there is one that is a bit smaller with a darker pink /white speckled surface.

All three are mounted with bronze caps attached to a chain and a finger ring. They were meant to be carried as a symbol of faith during Easter by Orthodox Christians.

Dating to 1750, there are tatters of the original silk ribbons used to further ornament each egg still caught in the edges of the bronze mount.

Enameled in gold leaf on the smooth surface of each in Cyrillic is the timely greeting of “He is truly risen.” This traditional greeting is still used today.

Second are two very small eggs crafted by the iconic firm of Faberge. They are crafted of 22 carat gold and are decorated with champlevé enamel. A pattern of lily of the valley is assigned by prongs setting tiny seed pearls to the surface. Each of these tiny eggs is also set with small, European-cut diamonds that are set in bands around the body in three places.

Small loops set at the top of each egg allow it to be worn around the wrist or neck on a ribbon or chain.

Although no sentiment is spelled out on the surface, the use of the lily of the valley symbolizes life renewed. This sentiment extends across the 200 years since the eggs were first crafted and continues to add

emotional value to these beautiful, miniature works of art.

The third egg is made of silver and was crafted by Gorham circa 1875. It is fashioned to be a box that will open with a removable lid, not attached with a hinge.

It features a pattern of Easter Lily on the surface which was achieved by punching the design from underneath. This egg opens to reveal a red, flocked-velvet interior. The size of a small avocado, this egg can hold many treasured objects yet is itself the ultimate treasure bringing the message of Easter to all who see it.

Eggs, bunnies, and Constantine: A history of Easter

Did you know about the controversy over Easter?

This coming Sunday is the day Christians celebrate Jesus resurrection after he was crucified on the Jewish Passover 2,000 years ago, was resurrected and ascended into Heaven.

Easter celebrations include sunrise services, the Easter bunny, Easter baskets, Easter egg hunts and new Easter clothes.

Biblical and secular scholars agree the name, "Easter", and its traditions are rooted in the worship of the pagan goddess Eostre or Ishtar.

Bunnies and eggs Biblical scholars debate that pagan goddess is at the root of "Easter."

One tradition of bunnies that lay eggs is connected with an ancient Anglo-Saxon goddess, Eostre, or Ostara.

According to mythology, the goddess found a wounded bird and transformed it into a bunny so it could survive the winter.

The bunny was so thankful for the goddess in the spring that it decorated its eggs and left them as an offering.

Eostre's other name is Astarte, the Phoenician moon goddess.

Dr. Tony Nugent, professor of Theology from the Seattle University, and other biblical scholars say that the origins of Easter started with the goddess Ishtar, a Sumerian goddess dating back to 2100 BC. She was also known as Ostara, Austra, and Eastre.

This goddess represented a spirit of spring, renewal, and an "Eastre hare."

Jacob Grimms, who wrote Deutsche Mythologie, said the idea of resurrection is ingrained in the celebration and worship of Eastre.

The New Unger's Bible Dictionary says the origins of the name Eastra's origins are from a spring goddess, whose sacrifices were offered around the Jewish Passover time each year.

Celebrate spring with Australian lamb

ome spring, I love cooking and serving Australian grass-fed lamb, especially the shank portions for dinner.

I fell in love with braised lamb shanks years ago at the nowclosed Kate Mantilini's restaurant in Beverly Hills, California.

Lamb shanks can be served in many ways -- as the main meat course with the braising sauce over a starch, picked off the bone and used as a filling for Greekstyle gyros, mixed with barbeque sauce and placed on a toasted bun, combined with salsa and served in a taco shell, or used in casseroles, stews and soups.

The shank is the cut of lamb taken from the lower section of the animal's legs and can be from the front legs (fore shank) or the back legs (hind shank). The fore shank may include part of the shoulder, as well as part of the leg, while the hind shank will include only part of the rear leg. Lamb shanks have a paper-thin membrane covering that should be removed. They also have a thin

layer of fat, but are leaner than the sirloin part of a lamb. Once the shank has been properly prepared, seasoned and braised in the oven or simmered for eight hours in a slow-cooker, it practically melts off the bone!

You can make this delicious recipe ahead of time and warm up the shanks right before serving. I've also included a recipe for Lemon and Baby Spinach Fettuccini, which is the perfect spring side dish. The warm pasta and tender spinach soak up the flavorful braising liquid, and the lemon complements the shanks beautifully.

Serve with a loaf of crusty garlic bread, and you'll welcome spring with gusto!

1. Heat oven to 300 F. 2. Heat oil in a large roasting pan over medium-high heat. Season lamb with 1 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Brown lamb in hot oil, 5 to 7 minutes on each side. Remove from pan. Add onion, carrot and garlic cloves.

Cook until slightly softened, 5 to 6 minutes.

3. Add vinegar, grape juice and Worcestershire sauce; cook 2 minutes, stirring and scraping bottom of pan. Stir in tomatoes, cloves, Braised Lamb Shanks sugar and broth; cook 2 minutes.

Lemon and baby spinach fettuccini Heavily salt the boiling water when making the pasta and reserve ½ cup of the starchy liquid to create a sauce.

• Fettuccini pasta, cooked, hot 3 quarts cooked (1-½ pounds dry) • 3 quarts fresh baby spinach • ¼ cup olive oil • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 2 tablespoons lemon zest • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes • ½ cup warm pasta cooking liquid • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1. In a bowl, toss together hot fettuccini, spinach, oil, lemon juice and lemon zest, salt, and black and red pepper until mixed. Add the cooking liquid, a few tablespoons at a time, as needed to loosen mixture. Sprinkle with half of the Parmesan cheese.

2. Divide the Lemon-Spinach Fettuccini among 4 rimmed plates.

Top with the lamb shank, the braising liquid and sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese and parsley, if desired. Serves 4.

Students at two schools become ‘Partners in play’ Special to the Chronicle

Two classes at one elementary school were treated to a special day of fun and play through an event dubbed “Partners in Play!”

Dana Bennett’s 4K class and Brooke Bridges 5K class at Chapin Elementary came together with the help of Chapin High students to give their classes a chance to cut loose outside through interactive games and events.

“Being a teacher that serves many types of students you have a whole new level of seeing kids in a world where everybody is accepted and everybody gets to win,” said Bridges.

“With our races and competitions, nobody is even looking to see whose team has more or less and who is winning, everybody is just participating and having a good time.”

Chapin Elementary’s event had a western theme that showcased games such as an obstacle course, horse race, bean bag toss, sack race and had stations where students could take photos, paint kindness rocks, sit on a saddle and even dig for gold.

Chapin High’s student government was quick to volunteer when they found out about the event and were having just as much, if not more fun than the elementary students.

“We love volunteering with these younger kids and it’s just nice to always see these kids have a smile on their face and get excited about playing together,” said Chapin High’s student body president Chase Haywood.

“I think we are having a better time than them just running around and dancing with them.”
