April is ‘Child Abuse Prevention Month’

ince April was first declared Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1983, the entire month has become a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse.

We’re committed to be a part of that effort as we work with a number of community organizations united against child abuse.

Part of our working together is to share information about what to do if you suspect a child in your life is suffering abuse.

It can be difficult to determine from a child’s behavior or emotional state whether abuse has occurred. The best way to know if a child has been

Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are up to 358.12 (full pool is 360.00).

Surface temperatures have dropped all the way back into the low- to mid50s. There is some color to the water but it is not dirty.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and the odds seem to be that it’ll be tough for a little while longer.

The absolute water temperature isn’t really the problem, but the fact that water temperatures have dropped almost every day this month seems to be putting off the bite.

Tournament weights have been very low for Murray at this time of year, and bites are hard to come by.

Veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown, who was bed fishing three weeks ago, reports that at this point most of the fish seemed to have pulled out to more like 6-10 feet of water.

A lot of people are sitting their boat in the depth where they need to be fishing.

Fish aren’t really relating to the bottom, with most of them seeming to be suspended in the water column.

Most of the fish seem to be relating to bait, and shallow-running crankbaits and jerkbaits were working better when herring and shad were shallower. They will

still catch some fish, but the bait seems to have pulled out.

As a result a lot of fish just aren’t very catchable right now – although they will still feed some.

For now, most of the fish seem to be related to the sides of points. Things should get better when temperatures warm.

As would be expected with the dropping water temperatures, Captain Brad Taylor (803-3311354) reports that striped bass have gotten deeper as the bait has pulled out.

The best numbers of fish seem to be mid-lake in the 20-30-foot range, and Hollow Creek, Crystal Lake and Bear Creek have all held fish. The best bet is covering water with weighted free-lines.

Crappie fishing has been really good, although Brad reports that the fish have also responded to the dropping water temperatures.

When it was so warm the fish moved into the creeks, and now they seem to have pulled out to the deepest part of those same creeks.

Trolling the middle of creeks up the rivers has resulted in some excellent catches, and anglers are generally fishing the deepest areas.

When water temperatures begin to reverse fish will move shallower again.

On the catfish front, Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that upand-down water temperatures have really put a hurting on the catfish action.

Fish are scattered out in 40-60 feet of water, and he only rates the bite as poor to fair. With dropping water temperatures, fish are confused about whether it’s spring or fall!

Jane (PG) — In 1957, Dr. Louis Leakey sent a young British secretary with no scientific degree or experience out into the wilds of Africa on an expedition to understand chimpanzee behavior.

That young woman was Jane Goodall. Her goal was simple: to become one with the jungle, and in her stunning success of pioneering groundbreaking research into animal behavior and advocating for animal welfare, she realized a life-long dream to truly live with the animals.

Unlike other documentaries, director Brett Morgan brings us intimately into Jane's world, walking unworn paths through the jungle beside her by accessing hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage from the National Geographic archives.

The film is narrated by Jane herself, and it's mesmerizing, fascinating and an absolute must-watch.

Insidious: The Last Key but especially so when the (R) — Lin Shaye returns as the paranormal investigator Elise in the fourth installment of the "Insidious" franchise.

In this iteration, we return to Elise's childhood home, a dark place of terror and entrapment.

The current resident of the home, Ted Garza (Kirk Acevedo), is experiencing some high-level haunting, and calls in Elise to investigate. She takes the job, if only to right the wrongs of the past and free her family from the curse that has overshadowed her life.

With jump-scare after jump-scare, it's not the worst of its genre. If you have a real love for spindly fingered creepshows, by all means take the plunge into the Further.

But mainly, it's 103 minutes of treacherous plot holes.

Sweet Virginia (R) —

In this atmospheric crime drama set in a lonely Alaska motel named "Sweet Virginia," we find contract killer Elwood (Christopher Abbott) awaiting payment for his latest job. An eccentric stranger and a few murders are enough to stir an isolated town anywhere,

owner of said motel is a former rodeo star, played by Jon Bernthal.

Brooding, hushed tones and character development are the order of the day.

Imogene Poots supports as the grieving widow and love interest.

bit of parenting trouble has stressed-out proctologist Peter (Ed Helms) wishing he could turn to his dad for advice, so his mom (Glenn Close) reveals that, contrary to what he'd always been told, his father might still be alive — only she's not sure WHO he is.

Peter and his irreverent fraternal twin Kyle (Owen Wilson) set off on a mission to find Pops.

The candidates include NFL legend Terry Bradshaw (playing himself), powder keg J.K. Simmons and more.

It should be a hilarious road trip of self-discovery that is populated with solid comedians and big personalities, which sounds like a recipe for success. It's not.

It's a comedy that's not really funny, and the potential to warm the heart is epically squandered. Hard pass.

‘Mission Team’ makes waves all over India with the Gospel

T

Well, they have orange groves, but a woman down Florida way tells me orange trees aren’t as spectacular as peach trees though they’re fabulously fragrant.

As I drove off, the women were giggling and hopping around snapping photos.

High on peach trees they were.

Mom and Dad were high on them too. They always looked forward to a summer ritual: driving to Edgefield County to buy peaches.

Where they went exactly I’m unsure but they went.

Down Highway 378 across the Savannah they drove taking a right onto Highway 28 in McCormick and a left onto Highway 283 in Plum Branch.

Plum tickled, they were.

Across Stevens Creek they went and on to Highway 25 and into Edgefield proper on through to its peach orchards.

Back home, they came with split-oak baskets overflowing with flavor. It wasn’t

long before peach pies, fresh sliced peaches, pickled peaches, and homemade peach ice cream blessed family gatherings.

Knowing how Mom loved flowers, I’m sure the drive to Peach Country provided double joy.

Good things to eat and a profusion of blooms with few equals.

Along the way, I’m sure they talked about growing up with fruit trees. The seed was in their blood.

Granddad Walker had crab apples and a date tree.

Most unusual taste ever, sweet, dry ... unworldly ... a tad chemical.

On Granddad Poland’s farm a big pear tree, heavy with fruit, stood by a barn.

Saw my only butchering of a cow at that barn.

Once was enough.

That pear tree? I’m going to look for it one day, and if it’s there, I’ll photograph it, but there’s no going back to photograph Mom’s lonely peach tree.

Well, things change don’t

they? I’m changing too.

From now on, I’ll photograph Edgefield County’s pink clouds.

Come winter’s end, I’ll keep an eye on the weather and the blooms’ progress.

Something to do ... something to look forward to.

Something to remember, like Mom’s lonely peach tree but not its beautiful petals, delicate blossoms that surely drifted across our yard like pink snowflakes.

For the life of me, though, I just can’t remember.

Over time, demand grew for a regional regatta featuring J/24s, a more universal class of keelboat.

These boats can compete not only on lakes but also in ocean sailing and won out over E scows “because more J/24 sailors than E scow sailors were willing to travel the distance to get to Lake Murray,” Wrisley recalled.

“The late Willard Davis, long-time dean of Arts and Sciences at USC and the Easter Regatta’s race director for many years, ran a great regatta which helped set the event’s reputation.”

Wrisley said even in those early years, as many as 50 boats and attendant teams of sailors registered for the Easter Regatta.

Commandant Jan Jernigan, only the second female to serve at the club’s helm, said: “We are so proud to host this event – one of the world’s most popular for J/24s – because it really puts our club and Lake Murray on the map.”

CSC sponsors the University of South Carolina Gamecocks sailing team, and twice has been chosen to host the US “Champion of Champions” regattas, in 2013 and 2015.

Students Express Art of Healing

en Lexington County high school students have received prizes and awards in the 9th annual “Art of Healing,” a juried art competition for Lexington County high school students sponsored

by Lexington Medical Center Foundation in partnership with the Columbia Museum of Art. The students created drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures that each depicted their interpretation of healing.

The Columbia Museum of Art will display the artwork until April 2. Then, the work will be in the North Tower Atrium of Lexington Medical Center for the rest of the month.

Many of the students’ entries shared inspirational personal stories of family members’ health challenges and recovery.

Award-wining fine artist Michael Story judged the entries and selected the winners.

It’s a Dog’s Life Anniversary Card In a stationery store, I quickly picked out a card for my wife for our anniversary.

The clerk was surprised by how little time it took me, and she began relating a story about another customer who spent a half-hour searching for the right anniversary greeting.

Noticing the man lingering over one card after another, the clerk went to see if she could help.

“Is there a problem?” she asked.

“Yes, there is,” he replied ruefully. “I can’t find one my wife will believe.”

Legal Mom When Jack’s mother was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors.

As a young attorney, Jack had filled her in on what to expect.

Asked about the occupations of her family members, Jack’s mom answered, “My son is a lawyer.”

As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the counsel or services of an attorney.

“Only to mow my lawn.”

Job interview nightmares The following are “actual” post-interview excerpts collected from middle managers who, needless to say, probably did not hire any of the people mentioned here: 1. “Applicant stretched out on the floor to fill out the job application.”

2. “She wore a Walkman and said she could listen to me and the music at the same time.”

3. “A balding candidate abruptly excused himself.

Returned to office a few minutes later, wearing a hairpiece.”

4. “Applicant asked to see interviewer’s resume to see if the personnel executive was qualified to judge the candidate.”

5. “Applicant announced she hadn’t had lunch and proceeded to eat a hamburger and french fries in the interviewer’s office - wiping the ketchup on her sleeve.”

6. “Stated that, if he were hired, he would demonstrate his loyalty by having the corporate logo tattooed on his forearm.”

7. “Interrupted to phone his therapist for advice on answering specific interview questions.”

8. “When I asked him about his hobbies, he stood up and started tap dancing around my office.”

9. “At the end of the interview, while I stood there dumbstruck, he went through my purse, took out a brush, brushed his hair, and left.”

10. “Applicant pulled out a Polaroid camera and snapped a flash picture of me. Said he collected photos of everyone who interviewed him.”

11. “Said he wasn’t interested because the position paid too much.”

12. “During the interview, an alarm clock went off from the candidate’s briefcase. He took it out, shut it off, apologized and said he had to leave for another interview.”

13. “A telephone call came in for the job applicant. It was from his wife. His side of the conversation went like this: “Which company? When do I start? What’s the salary?” I said, “I assume you’re not interested in conducting the interview any farther.”

ICU nightmare In a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 1:00 a.m., regardless of their medical condition.

This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the supernatural.

No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents.

The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 1:00 a.m., all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about.

Just when the clock struck 1:00, the part-time Sunday janitor, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

Child safety seat techs available from W. Cola PD

The West Columbia Police Department has a new program to help parents protect their children.

“We have five new Child Passenger Safety technicians,” said West Columbia Assistant Police Chief Scott Morrison. “They have trained to properly install child safety seats in cars.

They can check already installed car seats, too, to make sure they have been put in the car correctly.”

West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall said the training — like all education — enhances the quality of the West Columbia Police Department.

“Whenever we can add more knowledge and help, it’s an advantage, and it increases the value of our staff in the community we

serve,” said Tyndall.

Officer David Myers heads up the WCPD Community Action Team. He is one of the new Child Passenger Safety technicians.

The other four are officers Eugene Hammill, Kristin Moore, Maggie Jones and Korey Davis.

“Statistics show that up to 90% of children are improperly restrained in car safety seats,” said Myers.

“The child does not fit the seat or something is wrong in a vast majority of the seats installed. Sometimes the child has simply outgrown the seat.”

Myers said not only is it the goal of the WCPD officers to properly install the seats, but he said they also want to teach.

“We want to show parents the right way to install the car seats,” said Myers.

“Chances are they are go-

ing to move the seat after we install it. Or the child is going to grow and need another seat or you’re taking the seat out. We want to show them how to put the seat back in so that it’s safe and legal.”

Morrison said it is imperative that children are in the seats properly. “If you have an accident you want that child to be as safe as possible,” he said.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for children over one year of age, according to information published by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Make memories for all with your Easter tabletop

s I set the dining room table for Easter, memories of this holy week flood my mind and temporarily distract me from the events of the day and the worries of the modern world. With each plate placed in front of each chair, each glass, each place setting of silver, the past comes into focus as each table article speaks to me from years long gone.

I remember my grandmother’s hand holding the same glass I will use for iced tea this year. My great-aunt’s silver serving pieces and my great-grandmother’s painted plates from France, both crafted at the turn of the century, sit in their proper place. There is something calming about tradition. My worries began to ease as I set the table.

The smell of the sweet grass napkin rings I use that must be 75 years old now take me back to Charleston and to the basket lady that made them for us. I still have the 12. Some are thinner than others and some are darkened with age, but they still smell of Charleston; they still smell of home.

I remember so well the Easter egg hunts, the sugar eggs with extruded sugar decoration, dyeing eggs with vinegar and pez tablets, dripping dye all over the kitchen table, staining my hands with colors so bright they took several days to fade. These eggs would be placed in an antique silver basket that sat in the back of the breakfront in my great-aunt’s home. Just before Easter, she would bring it out and fill it with Easter grass and dyed eggs. She made something beautiful out of something simple.

The basket was made in England for her mother’s wedding in 1897. It is large and round with an applied border and a handle that swings up and down. There is a beautiful pattern of camellia blossoms and buds in

the border and engraved on the surface. It rests on a circular foot. This is the sort of basket that was popular in the Victorian period and became known as a “bride’s basket,” used to hold sweets or flowers reserved for the bride and groom. It is a beautiful antique piece of silver, but to me it holds the key to the happy days of Easter when I was a child.

More recent memories also come back.

My father-in-law, who passed away 2 years ago, sat many times at this table, drank iced tea from the same glasses, ate a meal from the same plates. He will always be a part of this table top. Friends and family have come and gone, but their memory lives in the times spent around this table. Porcelain, silver and crystal tell just a small part of the story.

Objects have no greater purpose than to connect us to the past or to help us create the world as we wish it to be.

I hope you will pull out your own family pieces and create a memory of those you love. Perhaps the next generation of your family is watching more closely than you realize. I know I was.

A Celebration for the Greatest Generation

y parents celebrate 66 years of marriage in a few weeks.

Dad served in the Air Force for 26 years.

His absences meant that my mother had to be the rock of our family. Now that I’m an adult, I marvel at the way she always managed to create a beautiful home wherever we were stationed, shower us all with love and attention, pursue her artistic side through art, sewing and interior design, and cook delicious meals and desserts on my dad’s military salary.

When we got older and the time for my dad to retire was drawing near, my mother went back to work so they could save the money to buy a house. My dad went to night school to become a real estate agent. Later, my mother also went back to school to become an interior designer.

Together, my parents built a highly successful real estate business. My dad used his training as an Air Force recruiter to acquire customers and sell numerous homes. My mother designed the interiors, created beautiful window coverings and assisted the new homeowners with their furniture purchases.

My parents were born, grew up, married and created a family and careers during a time when African-Americans were still struggling for the right to vote, barred from working, living, shopping and eating where they wanted to, and were struggling to be treated with the same respect and dignity as any other citizen. Against all odds, they preserved and raised their children to do the same.

My three siblings all are musically or artistically gifted and work as real estate brokers and homebuilders. I love interior design, decorating homes and planning events. More importantly, I’ve become the family

historian through my books and newspaper articles like this one.

Considering that both my parents are in their late 80s, their health is fairly good. This upcoming 66th wedding anniversary is a special one, not just because of the time they’ve been married, but because by the grace of God, we are still together as a family. That by itself is a miracle, a blessing and a tribute to the hard work and determination of two members of the greatest generation.

One of my parents’ favorite dinners features steak and potatoes, so in their honor, I’m sharing my recipes for Great Steak and Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary and Garlic. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! We love you!

Great steak • 2 ribeye or New York strip steaks (1 to 1 ½ inches thick) • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Heat oven to 200 F to 250 F. 2. Place steaks on a rack set on a rimmed baking sheet. Season steaks with salt and pepper.

If possible, leave steaks in the refrigerator overnight to dry out the exterior.

3. Roast the steaks in the oven: for rare steaks, bake 20-25 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer reads 120 F; for medium, bake 25-30 minutes to reach 130 F; for medium-well, bake 30-35 minutes to reach 140 F; for well done, bake steak 35-40 minutes to reach 150 F. 4. Next brown and sear the cooked steaks. Three minutes before the steaks come out of the oven, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil or other hightemp-friendly oil to a heavy skillet, then set it to preheat on high on your largest burner.

5. When the oil is hot, add the steaks and a tablespoon of butter. Sear steaks, swirling and

lifting occasionally, until they’re nicely browned on the first side, about 45 seconds. Flip the steaks and brown the second side, for another 45 seconds.

Hold the steaks sideways to sear the edges. Serve immediately.

Serves 2.
