Lake Murray Fishing Report

L

ake Murray water levels are at 358.03 (full pool is 360.00). Surface temperatures have gone up 3 or 4 degrees to the mid- to upper-50s in the last two days.

Temperatures are rising on Lake Murray, and Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striped bass are starting to get into more of a spring pattern.

However, the most consistent bite remains fishing down-lines in 4050 feet of water.

There are some really good days pulling freelines and planer boards, but you have to hunt for the fish and the action can be pretty hit-or-miss.

However, with warming temperatures and the full moon Brad predicts that more and more bait and fish will pull up shallow soon and he looks for the pattern to shift more towards free-lines and planer boards.

On the crappie front, Brad reports that anglers are catching plenty of fish trolling and tightlining, especially if they are willing to cover a lot of water and hunt.

However, this is also the period when you can go shallow with a jigging pole and a cork and catch fish. Brad predicts

that the first really good wave of spawning fish will come up shallow soon.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that the bite is improving and the fish have been biting well in about 40 feet of water on Murray. He is catching them anchored and using cut bream for bait.

Especially with warming water temperatures, it is also that time when bank beaters can have a ball bass fishing on Lake Murray.

Weights in recent tournaments attest that catching a bunch of 2-3 pounders is very possible right now, and even with cooler temperatures the last couple of weeks a bunch of fish can be found shallow in and around spawning pockets.

More than one will say, “I’ve got this idea for a book ....” Nearly everyone has a story to tell, but some people are a story waiting to be told. That is the case with a lady I met not once, but twice, courtesy of the writing life.

Over the last three years I’ve presented my work at more than 200 events in Georgia and South Carolina.

The places range from restaurants to churches, libraries, museums, civic clubs, schools, colleges, and centers where silver-haired folks gather. Remembering all who cross my path isn’t possible but now and then a Reader’s Digest “most unforgettable character” comes along. Among the unforgettable walks Miss Jean Rinehardt Bridges.

On the back she had jotted down her website where I could read her stories. On the back in parentheses, she had written (novice). Time went by and I lost touch with Miss Jean.

I would learn that she lived in Atlanta from 1978 to 2002. There she made life-long friends who referred to her as their “Atlanta Angel.” With her luxuriant blonde hair she did, indeed, resemble an angel, but what earned her that angelic nickname was how she treated people, as I would see.

Well, Miss Jean’s been in South Carolina a while now and she brought her Atlanta Angel ways with her. Thanks to a talk I gave at one of the Shepherd Centers, our paths crossed again. This time we stayed in touch and Miss Jean had me over for lunch

last May. I read some of her writing (a novice she’s not), and when I left she gave me a solar-powered bobble head doll. “Keep this nearby,” she said. “It’s your Atlanta Angel and it will look over you.” She also gave me a pineapple, a gift that signifies friendship.

The pineapple is long gone but not Atlanta Angel.

We start each day with a “cyber” chat over coffee and generally bid each other good evening around six.

Some days we chat off and on. We hardly miss a day without talking. If we do, it’s because I’m on the road or in the field, literally in a field some days.

Back in my studio I email her previews of select columns, complete with photographs. She makes a good editor and I value her opinion. She’s a great life coach, too. We share our views on life and give thanks that we’re in good circumstances. Hers is a gentle soul.

I lost my mother three years ago this month and the stars sent Miss Jean, my Atlanta Angel, to help fill the void. She gives me motherly advice, always

apologizing (“I know I’m not your mother but ...). The apology isn’t necessary because her advice is heartfelt and sound. AA, as I call her, sees the best in each day and counts her blessings. I try to follow her lead. To say she is a good influence is an understatement.

Outside of junk mail, ads, and con artists, the Internet is wonderful. It gives friends great ways to share things, and AA and I do just that.

Writing is a solitary enterprise and the golden years can be lonely too. Sharing our day helps.

And that little bobblehead doll? Well, it’s a few feet away watching over me as it dances beneath a lamp.

I have her business card here on my desk. When I need advice or a moment to talk, I can turn to the Atlanta Angel, she of the blonde halo, and I know she will be there.

Cohen said one of the best parts of working the concert series is the feedback he gets.

“People see that I am part of the staff putting on the concerts, and they come up to me and tell me how good it is,” he said.

Richard Skipper, executive director of the Cayce -West Columbia Chamber, is also thank-

ful for the concert series.

“For 14 seasons, the CMC Rhythm on the River has been a great example of a partnership between the Greater Cayce West Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber’s business members and the City of West Columbia,” Skipper said.

And for convenience, the City of West Columbia will also be providing shuttle service from nearby parking lots for easy access to the venue.”

Keep South Carolina Beautiful and PalmettoPride need volunteers for a cleanup Saturday, April 21.

“Taking part in this cleanup means we are moving towards a cleaner, greener and more beautiful South Carolina,” said Mallory Biering, Keep South Carolina Beautiful director.

The event will begin at Sandhills Middle School on, on Meadowfield Road in Gaston.

Cleanup and safety supplies will be provided. Volunteers must be 13 or older.

Aztec Chili Adds Hint of Cocoa

I

absolutely love all things chocolate! I particularly enjoy using cocoa in savory dishes from barbeque spice rubs and sauces to pots of fiery black-bean chili.

The story of chocolate begins with cocoa trees that grew wild in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin and other areas in Central and South America.

The Maya Indians and the Aztecs recognized the value of cocoa beans hundreds of years before cocoa was brought to Europe. It was the Maya Indians, an ancient people whose descendants still live in Central America, who first discovered the delights of cocoa as long ago as 600 AD. The Mayan people lived on the Yucatan Peninsula, a tropical area in what is now southern Mexico, where wild cocoa trees grew. At first they harvested cocoa beans from the rainforest trees, then cleared areas of lowland forest to grow their own cocoa trees in the first known cocoa plantations.

A drink called “chocolatl” -made from roasted cocoa beans, water and a little spice -- was their primary use, but cocoa beans also were valued as currency. An early explorer visiting Central America found that four cocoa beans could buy a pumpkin; 10 could buy a rabbit.

Because cocoa beans were valuable, they were given as gifts at ceremonies such as a child’s coming of age and on religious occasions. Merchants often traded cocoa beans for commodities such as cloth, jade and ceremonial feathers.

Mayan farmers transported their cocoa beans to market by canoe or in large baskets strapped to their backs.

Wealthy merchants traveled further, employing porters to carry their wares, as there were no horses, pack animals or wheeled carts in Central America at that time.

Some ventured as far as Mexico, the land of the Aztecs -- introducing them to the much-prized cocoa beans. The Aztecs were an ancient nomadic people who founded a great city in the Valley of Mexico in 1325 -- Tenochtitlan.

“Chocolatl” was consumed in large quantities by the Aztecs as a luxury drink. The Aztec version of this muchprized drink was described as “finely ground, soft, foamy, reddish, bitter with chilli water, aromatic flowers, vanilla and wild bee honey.”

By the time the Spanish invaded Mexico in the 16th century, the Aztecs had created a powerful empire: Their armies were supreme in Mexico.

Tributes in the form of food, cloth and luxury items such as cocoa beans flowed into Tenochtitlan. When the Spanish defeated the Aztecs, they destroyed much of Tenochtitlan and rebuilt it as Mexico City, the capital of modern-day Mexico.

The legacy of the highly civilized and sophisticated Aztecs remains, however, in the form of their indigenous language, Nahuatl -- which is still spoken by more than 2 million people -- their archaeological ruins and extraordinary temples and cities, skilled and sensitive art, an advanced calendar, and their inventive use of cocoa beans.

espresso powder 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons ancho or regular chili powder 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon smoked sweet paprika 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 bay leaves 2 (15.5 ounce) cans nosalt-added black beans, rinsed and drained Optional garnishes: avocado, chopped parsley or cilantro, shredded or crumbled cheese, sour cream

1. Heat the oil in a 5-quart pot over high heat. Add the beef, onion, bell pepper and garlic. Cover the pot and cook until the meat is browned, about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2. Add the crushed tomaAZTEC CHILI toes (with juices), water, espresso powder, brown 1 tablespoon olive oil sugar, cocoa powder, chili 1 1/2 pounds ground beef powder, oregano, salt, papri(80/20) ka, black pepper, cayenne 2 medium-large yellow pepper and bay leaves. The contractor for the lawn position will maintain and remove trash or debris from the lawns, bushes at Town Hall grounds, the Town Park, the Police Department grounds, Town Sign areas, two pump station areas and Hwy 321 from North and South ends of Town Limit signs in median and 10 foot on each side of Hwy 321. Cut grass in these areas every other week during growing season (March thru October) and every month during off season (November thru February).

Trim bushes at Town Hall and Police Department and bottom of Crepe Myrtle trees in median on Hwy 321. If a tree in the median is damaged, repair or replace as needed. Refresh mulch at the Police Department and Town Hall as needed.
