Every New Year’s day we say that this year will be the best.

We are going to go to the gym, stop eating junk, be a better person, save more money and many other things.

This year, why don’t you have a technology resolution to make your life better?

Get Personal All iPhones come with Siri. All Android phones come with Google.

Both are personal assistant type programs.

Got an android phone?

Pick it up, unlock it and say “Ok Google.”

It will beep and wake up to wait for a question to search.

What you may not know is that it will also schedule alarms, schedule things on your calendar, send a text message and even dial a call for you.

Got an iPhone? Siri is almost famous with her ability to answer questions and help you do things.

Schedule something, send

a text, dial the phone. Radio stations even have an ‘Ask Siri’ section as a joke, just to see what she will say.

Stop wasting your time and typing things on your phone, just speak it.

Try Windows 10 I know it is scary to try new things. And, yes there are mixed reviews.

So what?

Windows 10 is still light years better than Windows 8.

It is even better than Windows 7 in its intuitiveness.

Still working with Windows 98, XP or Vista?

Upgrade that computer and get with the new digital age.

There are always going to

be bad Windows reviews.

It is a major conglomerate and people don’t like that it is one of the few operating systems you can use.

So unless you are planning to use MacOS or go Linux and use Ubuntu — I salute those that do — please just upgrade and stop complaining.

If you are already using MacOS, Apple products rock on their own level, just keep being cool.

Play a Game Find out why your grandkids love playing computer, phone or console games.

Pick one up and give it a real try. You might find you actually like it.

Games no longer have the

bad reputations they used to have.

And you don’t have to go crazy and play it constantly the way 16 year olds do.

FISHING REPORT

LAKE MURRAY: Catfish: Good. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the bite is pretty good right now and fishing has been relatively consistent. The most reliable way to locate aggressive fish has been drifting with cut herring and shad and the most productive depth range has been 25-55 feet of water. Creek and river channel ledges are holding fish but do not overlook flats that have roaming catfish scattered across them. Anglers need to be prepared to adjust to different depth ranges almost daily as the baitfish and catfish are constantly changing areas and depths. Chris’s boat has been catching decent numbers of big channel catfish as well as a bonus big blue or three on most days.

Striped bass: Fair to good. Lake World reports that striper are scattered all over the lake, but the best action has come from the mid-lake up. That is not to say that fish cannot be caught as far down the lake as Jake’s and the dam, but the best numbers of fish are further up. As always in the cooler months look for birds to help locate fish, and particularly seagulls.

The presence of loons is a less reliable indicator that striper may be feeding in the area, although loons are a good indicator that bait is present. On days when fish are schooling a variety of lures will catch them, but if schooling activity is not apparent then dragging free-lined live herring or dropping down-lined herring down to 20 or 30 feet can be effective. Cut bait has also been very effective on the bottom in 4-20 feet of water, particularly up the rivers.

Financial Warning Signs

New dents, scratches and dings on your aging parent’s car might be a sign of deteriorating driving ability. These are pretty obvious warning signs. With impaired financial decision making, the signs may not be quite as obvious, but if you know what to look for you might be able to spot it early.

1. Is the aging person taking longer to complete financial tasks? Does she struggle with every­ day efforts like preparing bills for mailing, reconciling bank statements or organizing paperwork?

2. Is the person missing key details in financial documents? Are bills piling up and has he missed a payment? Is he able to prioritize his regular responsibilities?

3. Is your aging parent experiencing problems with everyday arithmetic? Maybe you recently went out to dinner with mom and dad, and while paying, they took an inordinate amount of time to calculate the appropriate tip.

4. Have you noticed a decreased understanding of financial concepts with your loved ones?

Are they having increased difficulty compre­ hending health care matters like deductibles, or are they having a hard time understanding the bank statements they receive?

5. Are they having new difficulty identifying investment risks? Are they able to minimize the risks in potential investments? Did they recently fall victim to fraud or a scam because they could not spot the liabilities?

Pay extra attention toward looking for the warn­ing signs of mental and financial decline.

According to the survey, 58 percent of fam­ ilies experience disagreements, conflicts or confrontation with others when aging affects financial decision making. Whether you’re a child or family member who has been enlisted to help or even chart­ing your own financial future, approaching these discussions with

candor and an open mind is critical.

“Especially if you’re accustomed to hand­ ling money matters privately, learning to talk more candidly about your finances may be uncomfortable,” said Ted Beck, president and CEO of NEFE. “However, allowing trusted individuals to take a closer look at your accounts can help you establish a realistic plan for the future, and help flag any potential concerns.”One way Beck recommends protecting your par­ents is to allow view-only access to let loved ones help monitor for unusual activity on your banking and credit accounts. If restrictions to unauthorized users prohibit this, you can set up an alert program (via email or text) when a transaction over a set amount occurs. Also,

remember to perform regular credit checks to avoid scams and identity theft. Check the three major reporting bureaus and stagger the reports to get one every four months.

Forgotten Proposal An elderly widow and widower had been dating for aboutfive years. The man finally decided to ask her to marry him.

When he asked her, she immediately said “yes”.

The next morning when he awoke, he couldn’t rememberwhat her answer was! “Was she happy? I think so,wait, no, she looked at me funny...”

After about an hour of trying to remember to no avail,he got on the telephone and gave her a call.

Embarrassed,he admitted that he didn’t remember her answer to themarriage proposal.

“Oh”, she said, “I’m so glad you called. I remembered saying ’yes’ to someone, but I couldn’t remember who it was....”

Sales Methods A store manager overheard a clerk saying to a customer, “No, ma’am, we haven’t had any for some weeks now, and it doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting any soon.”

A few glances, but no one moved, so he barked again, “Let’s get off that corner... NOW!” Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled stares in his direction.

Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, “Well, how did I do?”

Pretty good,” chuckled the vet, “especially since this is a bus stop.”

trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts. Without trying to make her look like the stupid one, I calmly explained, “Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in South Africa.” Her response... ... click.

A man called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that is not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, “Don’t lie to me. I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state.”

I got a call from a man who asked, “Is it possible to see England from Canada?”

I said, “No.” He said “But they look so close on the map.”

Another man called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had a 1-hour lay over in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, “I heard Dallas was a big airport, and I need a car to drive between the gates to save time.”

A nice lady just called.

She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20am and got into Chicago at 8:33am. I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of llinois, but she could not understand the concept of time zones. Finally I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!

A woman called and asked, “Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know who’s luggage belongs to who?” I said, “No, why do you ask?” She replied, “Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said FAT, and I’m overweight, is there any connection?” After putting her on hold for a minute while I “looked into it” (I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for Fresno is FAT, and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.

I just got off the phone with a man who asked, “How do I know which plane to get on?” I asked him what exactly he meant, which he replied, “I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these darn planes have numbers on them.”

A woman called and said, “I need to fly to Pepsicola on one of those computer planes.” I asked if she meant to fly to Pensacola on a commuter plane. She said, “Yeah, whatever.”

A businessman called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion

about passports, I reminded him he needed a visa.

“Oh no I don’t, I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those.” I double checked and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, “Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express.”

A woman called to make reservations, “I want to go from Chicago to Hippopotamus, New York” The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: “Are you sure that’s the name of the town?” “Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a Hippopotamus anywhere.”

The customer retorted, “Oh don’t be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, “You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” “That’s it! I knew it was a big animal!”

Not For Cotton A bill collector knocked on the door of a country debtor.

“Is Fred home?” he asked the woman who answered the door.

“Sorry,” the woman replied. “Fred’s gone for cotton.”

The next day the collector tried again.

“Is Fred here today?”

“No, sir,” she said, “I’m afraid Fred has gone for cotton.”

When he returned the third day he humphed, “I suppose Fred is gone for cotton again,?”

“No,” the woman answered solemnly, “Fred died yesterday.”

Suspicious that he was being avoided, the collector decided to wait a week and investigate the cemetery himself. But sure enough, there was poor Fred’s tombstone, with this inscription: “Gone, but not for cotton.”

Fix It Yourself When a man’s printer type began to grow faint, he called a local repair shop where a friendly man informed him that the printer probably needed only to be cleaned. Because the store charged $50 for such cleanings, he told him he might be better off reading the printer’s manual and trying the job himself.

Pleasantly surprised by his candor, he asked, “Does your boss know that you discourage business?”

“Actually, it’s my boss’s idea,” the employee replied sheepishly. “We usually make more money on repairs if we let people try to fix things themselves first.”

football season having concluded, it’s a good time to look at what Feaster brought to his team.

“He’s one of the toughest players I’ve ever coached in football,” Airport head coach Kirk Burnett said.

Feaster’s coach said that after Feaster – who is also a fullback- picked up a first down, running a fake punt, on a 4th and 8th in Airport’s playoff win against Orangeburg-Wilkinson in late November.

Feaster’s run all but

sealed the win and capped a 11-2 season, one of the Eagles’ best ever.

Feaster rushed for 273 yards as a fullback, but defense is where he shined. In the last game of the regular season, Feaster intercepted the ball against rival Brookland-Cayce to stop any chance of a Bearcat comeback.

While Feaster has logged his share of big plays, he also was the most-reliable defender for the Eagles.

Feaster had 106 tackles, with nine tackles-for-loss and

a sack. With his speed and ability to to find the ball-carrier, Feaster was in the opponent’s backfield quickly on run-plays.

His pass defense was not bad either. Feaster had two interceptions, two QB hurries and three pass deflections.

There is no question that Feaster is a standout on the football field. And the fivefoot 10, 200-pounder does not want it to end in high school.

“There has been some talk about colleges looking at him,” said Feaster’s father,

Robbie.

Robbie said if he was a couple inches taller, that seems to catch the eye of college recruiters.

But regardless of size, Feaster is a player that never slows down on the field. His instincts are unquestionable, as is his love for the game.

His mother, Dianne, said she loves football Friday nights, watching her son play.

She would find it great if Feaster gets the chance to play on Saturday.

Pork Crown Roast with Garlic Herb Rub

Pork Crown Roast with Garlic Herb Rub Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 2 hours, 30 minutes Total time: 3 hours Serves: 12-16 1/4 cup kosher salt

2 tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper 1/3 cup fresh garlic, peeled and finely diced 1/4 cup thyme, leaves removed from stem and coarsely chopped 1/4 cup rosemary, leaves removed from stem and coarsely chopped

2 tablespoons sage, leaves removed from stem and coarsely chopped 1/2 cup, plus 2 tablespoons olive oil

2 pounds baby red potatoes, halved

1 pound fresh pearl onions, peeled and halved

1 Omaha Steaks Pork Crown Roast

Salt Encrusted Prime Rib Roast

Thaw roast completely and remove plastic packaging.

Heat oven to 350 F. Prepare rub by combining salt, pepper, garlic, herbs and 1/2 cup of olive oil.

Mix 2 tablespoons of rub with remain­ing 2 tablespoons of olive oil and toss with potatoes and onions.

Liberally rub all sides of roast with remaining rub, including in between bones. Put any excess rub on top.

Place roast on foil lined sheet pan and spread potatoes and onions around sides of roast.

Cook on center rack of oven for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes to 2 hours and 35 minutes for a 9-pound roast, or until internal temperature reaches 145 F in the middle.

Let rest for 10-15 minutes before cutting away string and slicing between bones for 16 even portions. Serve with roasted red potatoes and pearl onions in natural au jus.

Apricot Ham Glaze Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Total time: 15 Serves: 6-8 1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon corn starch 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1 cup canned apricot nectar In small saucepan, combine brown sugar, corn starch and ginger. Stir in apricot nectar.

Cook over medium heat, stirring con­stantly, until mixture thickens and boils.

Serving suggestion: Brush glaze over whole ham before roasting or over ham steaks while grilling.

Cranberry Orange Ham Glaze Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Total time: 15 minutes Serves: 10-12

1 can (16 ounces) cranberry sauce

1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 teaspoon cloves, ground 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground 1/4 teaspoon all spice Place all ingredients in small sauce pan over low heat. Simmer for 5 minutes, then serve.

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 2 hours Total time: 2 hours, 15 minutes Serves: 8 Salt Crust:

1 box (3 pounds) coarse kosher salt 1 1/4 cups water

1 Omaha Steaks Bone-In Prime Rib Roast (6 pounds)

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2-3 teaspoons cracked black pepper Heat oven to 425 F. Line shallow roasting pan with heavyduty aluminum foil.

Combine salt crust ingredients; mix well. (Mixture may appear dry; do not add additional water.) In roasting pan, pat 1 1/2 cups salt mixture into rectangular shape about 1/2 to 1 inch larger than roast.

Brush roast with oil; press pepper evenly into surface.

Insert ovenproof meat thermometer into thickest part of roast, not resting in fat; center roast on salt layer. Starting at base of roast, pack remaining salt mixture onto sides and top to encase in salt. (Some salt mixture may fall off, exposing small areas of the roast. This will not affect cooking.)

Roast in oven approximately 1 3/4 to 2 hours for medium rare or 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 hours for medium doneness. Use thermometer to verify doneness.

Transfer pan with roast to cooling rack; let stand uncovered 15 minutes. Remove and discard salt crust from roast, brushing off any remaining salt. Carve and serve.

Vicksburg held the key to the Mississippi MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance traveling the country and enjoying every minute. Here is an account of their travels from South Carolina to the Southwest and back, a 4,736-mile trip through 11 states.

Vicksburg, Miss.

It’s refreshing to find out we aren’t the only suckers for back roads.

Sally McInerney wrote recently about the joy of exiting the interstates and taking your time on back roads where you’ll see all kinds of wonders everywhere.

You find long-abandoned farm houses and imagine who may have lived there.

You see children’s swings and slides and tires hanging from tree limbs and wonder about the children who enjoy them.

You see small churches of many denominations and old home places set back among pines and oaks.

“Want to feel better about the world we live in?” Sally writes. “Want to be reminded that a sort of steadiness and steadfastness still exists?

“Get off the highway.

Find a back road.”

And that’s what we did for most of 4,700 miles across the Deep South and the Southwest. We took the interstates only when they were our only option.

A war remembered

After leaving Lexington, Miss., we headed for Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, site of a bloody siege during the War for Southern Independence.

With help from our GPS, we pulled up to the gate house entrance to the battlefield park. The young Park Ranger was cheerful and suggested we buy a lifetime pass to all our national parks, for seniors like us only $10.

At the visitors center, we watched a movie reenactment of the battle and

heard a brief lecture on what happened in 1863.

President Lincoln knew the importance of Vicksburg and the Mississippi River in winning the war.

As a young man he had been paid $25 to take cargo down the river 1,200 miles to New Orleans.

“Let us get Vicksburg and all that country is ours,” Lincoln told his key officers. “The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket.”

In the South, Confederate President Jefferson Davis held the same opinion.

“Vicksburg is the nail head that holds the South’s two halves together,” he said. He called it “the Gibraltar of the West.”

As Lincoln spoke, none of his men thought it would take almost two more years and one frustrating setback after another before Vicksburg was finally taken.

Almost another full year

had to pass before Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant even became involved.

Lincoln’s frustration

It was no secret that President Lincoln was unhappy with George McClellan and other indecisive, slow-moving generals.

He wrote McClellan that if he wasn’t using the army, he’d like to borrow it.

Told that Grant was a heavy drinker, Lincoln replied, “Find out what he’s drinking and send each of our generals a case.”

At Vicksburg, Grant’s Army of the Tennessee had been trying to take the strategic Confederate river fortress for many months.

Previous attempts had failed to take Vicksburg positioned high above the Mississippi River.

They were blocked by deft rebel counter moves and the terrain.

In late April 1863, Grant undertook a new and bold campaign against Vicks-

burg. After a surprise landing down river, his forces moved rapidly inland, pushing back the threat posed by Gen. Joseph Johnston’s forces near Jackson. Once his rear was clear, Grant again turned toward Vicksburg.

Two Union victories weakened the Confederates and forced them to retreat to Vicksburg.

In May that year, Grant’s armies invaded Vicksburg, trapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton.

The bluecoats assailed the rebel stronghold on May 19 and 22 but were repulsed with such great loss that Grant laid siege to the city to save lives.

Soldiers and civilians endured the privations of siege warfare for 47 days before Pemberton surrendered July 4, 1863.

This completed one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war.

With the loss of Pember-

ton’s army and a vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half.

Grant’s successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as Union General-in-Chief.

With the Mississippi River now firmly in Union hands, the Confederacy’s future was in jeopardy.
