proven that Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects — slows reaction times, impairs cognitive performance and makes it more difficult for drivers to keep a steady position in their lane.

The bottom line is this: It doesn’t matter what term is used, if a person is high, stoned, wasted, or drunk, he or she is impaired. Driving while impaired by any substance is illegal and can be deadly to the driver and other road users. It’s that simple.

In next week’s Koon’s Watch, I’ll address how we should all be aware of how legally prescribed medication can, at times, impair someone behind the wheel.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 354.66 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the mid-50s.

Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striped bass fishing on Lake Murray has gotten really good, with by far the hottest action up the rivers where anglers are having great success throwing at fish where they can see birds, bait and fish boiling.

Earlier in the day, fish remain a little deeper, and on warm afternoons, they move into shallower water to feed.

The most success has come on double

rigs with bucktails and ice flies, but fish can also be caught pulling bait.

Fish are feeding on threadfin right now and so smaller live bait has been the best bet.

Captain Ron Davis of Edisto Island spends a lot of time on Lake Murray at this time of year, and he advises that when fish are shallow, like they have been recently, anglers might have better luck throwing smaller bucktails or lighter Alabama rigs rather than something that sinks too fast.

When fish are very shallow, throwing the conventional rigs often means that you are fishing under-

neath the fish.

Catfish are still biting well, and Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that the bite is good in 30-50 feet on herring, shad and perch.

There are very occasional off days, but overall the fishing has been strong.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that fishing has been tough at best.

A few fish have been caught tight-lining way up the rivers 10-12 feet down in 12-15 feet of water, and there have also been a handful of fish caught around deep docks and bridges.

PICKS OF THE WEEK It (R) — A supernatural force (Bill Skarsgard) awakens every 27 years in the town of Derry, Maine, to haunt and hunt the town’s children.

A ragtag group of kids, some with demons of their own, band together to avenge a loved one and assert themselves in the face of this deadly terrorizer — who takes the shape of its prey’s deepest fears.

It’s based on a novel by horror master Stephen King, and director Andy Muschietti takes the solid story and backs it up with frighteningly memorable visuals.

The kids are great, including the recently famous Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things.

And the film is a phenomenon.

My 9-year-old knows who Pennywise the Dancing Clown is, even though she has decidedly not seen the movie.

If you like scary, this should already be on your preorder list.

Quan’s long-buried violent past serves him expertly in his quest for revenge. I think of Jackie Chan as the smiling, charismatic, death-defying kung-fu master, but here is a darker, stoic Chan, completely out of character and a reminder that he is an actor first.

But you haven’t seen it with these songs or these stars (Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Pena, Liev Schreiber, Sia).

How do you review a bag of cotton candy? It’s essentially just a little pile of colored sugar all fluffed up and arranged on a stick.

But it’s somehow charmed, and the kids go nuts for it. Same here.

have heard so many great things from my daughter and grandkids about Elizabeth Murray, the youth minister at Lexington United Methodist church.

So, I just had to meet her to learn about their domestic and foreign missions efforts.

She is quite passionate about missions and outreach. And she received her calling to be an ordained minister while on a church mission trip to Brazil.

She told me about two specific ministries that intrigued me.

The first is the Salkehatchie Ministry, which started almost 40 years ago.

It’s similar to Habitat for Humanity.

Methodist youth from around the state go for a week to work with a local church repairing homes in the community.

Each church has a specific area they work in. LUMC teams work in Camden.

It’s hard work — painting, repairing or repairing roofs, tearing out and replacing floors. But it is a labor of love. And team members learn new skills.

The second ministry Murray mentioned is foreign mission trips to Honduras.

It is an opportunity for youth between 16 and 22 years old to experience ministering to people in another culture.

Their host there is HOI doing construction, VBS, community outreach and other activities.

To make it affordable, the district pays a third, the local church pays a third and the participants pay a third.

In June, while working with a local pastor, they encountered a woman that was having some fertility problems that were painful.

One member of the team is a nurse, and despite there being a language barrier between them, she quickly connected with the woman.

Although she couldn’t fix her problem, she prayed with the woman, and gave comfort and love to her. Just one of the blessings of foreign missions.

Winter Sports Corner Chronicle Country set for a wild sports year in 2018 The 2018 sports year in Chronicle Country will feature a plethora of major events. Here are three of the biggest to expect over the next 12 months.

Get ready for the show The Lexington County Blowfish will draw plenty of attention at its home stadium and throughout Chronicle Country this year.

Along will the Big South Tournament returning for a third straight year in May and serving as host site for regular-season collegiate games, the team will showcase the top talent in the Coastal Plain League during this year’s All-Star Show set for July 8-9.

The first day will feature the All-Star Fanfest with a Home Run Derby contest, followed by the All-Star Game on the next night.

This season, the Blowfish will have a new head coach as Marshall McDonald was promoted to replace Jonathan Johnson.

This will be McFadden’s second season with the Blowfish as he served as assistant coach last year.

The new season begins May 31 at home against Forest City.

Beginning this year, River Bluff and Chapin High Schools will both be in Region 4-5A, along with Lexington, White Knoll and Dutch Fork. Irmo will move to Region 8-5A to compete with Blythewood, Spring Valley, Lugoff-Elgin and Sumter.

When the FCC was created in 1934 (bringing broadcasters under federal regulation for the first time), FDR tapped the man who’d handled radio in his 1932 presidential campaign to head it.

Radio networks got the message pronto: don’t question Team Roosevelt and nobody gets hurt.

Henry A. Bellows, vice president of CBS Radio noted, “no broadcast would be permitted over the Columbia Broadcasting System that in any way was critical of any policy of the Administration.”

Things sunk to an alltime low in 1942. The first year of our involvement in World War II went badly for America. It was a rough way to start a war.

During his Dec. 18 news conference at the White House, FDR shocked reporters by producing a Nazi Iron Cross medal, symbol of Germany’s dictatorial militarism, handed it to a New York Daily News reporter and instructed him to give it to columnist John O’Donnell at his pa-

Most reporters laughed, although they privately said Roosevelt had gone too far. Post was humiliated.

Embarrassed, he admitted that he didn’t remember her answer to the marriage proposal.

“Oh,” she said, “I’m so glad you called. I remembered saying ‘yes’ to someone, but I couldn’t remember who it was...”

Roadtrip Two elderly women were out driving in a large carboth could barely see over the dashboard.

As they were cruising along they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red but they just went on through.

The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself, “I must be losing it, I could have sworn we just went through a red light.”

After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red again and again they went right though.

This time, the woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it.

She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on.

Not For Cotton A bill collector knocked on the door of a country debtor.

“Is Fred home?” he asked the woman who answered the door.

The next day the collector tried again.

“Is Fred here today?”

“No, sir,” she said, “I’m afraid Fred has gone for cotton.”

When he returned the third day he humphed, “I suppose Fred is gone for cotton again,?”

“No,” the woman answered solemnly, “Fred died yesterday.”

Suspicious that he was being avoided, the collector decided to wait a week and investigate the cemetery himself. But sure enough, there was poor Fred’s tombstone, with this inscription: “Gone, but not for cotton.”

Good night, sleep right!

L ike many adults, I sometimes have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep.

Sleep researchers have determined that as many as two-thirds of Americans don't get enough sleep.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called insufficient sleep a "public health epidemic."

Contrary to common belief, sleep is not a time when the mind and body shut down.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, "sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing, restoration and strengthening occurs."

Sleep serves critical functions, and it is necessary for optimal health and well-being.

Over time, lack of sleep can lead to stress, depression, and mental and physical exhaustion.

We know that when we're not well-rested, we don't perform at our best.

Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Some people may need as few as five hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep.

Children need even more.

Both children and adults can use naps to get the total number of hours of rest they need.

The focus here is on ways that adults can meet their need for rest.

Your body has a regular rhythm. Your body and your brain will tell you when you need rest.

Use this information to set a regular time to go to bed and get up.

Maintaining this simple routine will help supply your body with the energy it needs each day.

Sleep cannot be stored.

Bodies need rest on a regular basis.

Here are some tips for improving your sleep: • Most people find that the environment of the room is important to sleeping well.

Usually people want the room dark, cool and quiet.

• Some people use a nap to get the extra sleep they need. Sleep experts suggest limiting an adult nap to less than 45 minutes and taking it before 4 p.m. to ensure that you can still get a full night's sleep.

• Watch what you eat and drink in the evening. Foods and drinks that are high in protein, caffeine or sugar can keep you awake. Liquids can cause you to have to get up to use the bathroom during the night.

• Exercise has been found to be beneficial for sleep, especially for increasing quality of sleep and decreasing certain problems such as sleep apnea. Even small amounts of exercise during the day could help. For most people, some exercise is better for sleep than no exercise at all.

• Avoid excitement before bedtime. Instead, try reading, taking a warm bath or shower, or adopting some other routine to help you relax.

• When traveling, try to keep your normal eating and sleeping routine. You might find it easier to adjust to a different time zone by adapting your sleeping times before you leave home.

These foods may improve the quality of sleep: Walnuts – Good source of tryptophan, a sleepenhancing amino acid that helps make serotonin. Walnuts also contain their own source of melatonin, the "body clock" hormone that sets your sleep and helps you to fall asleep faster.

Almonds – Rich in magnesium, which helps you to stay asleep and also builds bones.

Tart Cherry Juice – Naturally boosts levels of melatonin.

Dairy – The brain uses the calcium and tryptophan found in dairy foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese to manufacture sleep-triggering melatonin.

Crustaceans – Shrimp and lobster are a great source of the sleep-inducing amino-acid tryptophan.

Honey – It's natural sugars raise our insulin slightly, allowing tryptophan to enter our brains more easily.

Lettuce – Contains lactucarium, which has sedative properties.

• 2 ½ cups water • 3 to 4 large lettuce leaves • 1 tablespoon of lemon balm (dried), or two dozen fresh leaves, or 2 herbal lemon balm tea bags • 1-2 teaspoons honey 1. Using a small pot, pour in water and add lettuce leaves, and bring to a boil over high heat, about 15 minutes. Remove pot from the heat. Add fresh or dried lemon balm or the lemon balm tea bags, cover, and let steep for 30 minutes.

2. Strain the tea and pour into a sealable container. Discard the lettuce leaves and the dried herbs or tea bags. Pour a serving of the tea into a cup, stir in the honey, and drink 1 hour before going to bed.

Refrigerate any remaining tea, and reheat and add honey before drinking.

Makes 2 servings.
