Certain medications may not impair you on their own, but if taken with a second medication or with alcohol, they may cause impairment.

Even something as simple as cold medication or an over-the-counter sleep aid can impair driving.

If it does, you will be arrested for a DUI. Remember, any form of impaired driving is illegal.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 354.66 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures are in the mid-50s.

Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reports that striped bass fishing on Lake Murray has gotten really good, with by far the hottest action up the rivers where anglers are having great success throwing at fish where they can see birds, bait and fish boiling.

Earlier in the day, fish remain a little deeper, and on warm afternoons, they move into shallower water to feed.

The most success has come on double rigs with bucktails and ice flies, but fish can also be caught pulling bait.

Fish are feeding on threadfin right now and so smaller live bait has

been the best bet.

Captain Ron Davis of Edisto Island spends a lot of time on Lake Murray at this time of year, and he advises that when fish are shallow, like they have been recently, anglers might have better luck throwing smaller bucktails or lighter Alabama rigs rather than something that sinks too fast.

When fish are very shallow, throwing the conventional rigs often means that you are fishing underneath the fish.

Catfish are still biting well, and Captain William Attaway (803924-0857) reports that the bite is good in 30-50 feet on herring, shad and perch.

There are very occasional off days, but overall the fishing has been strong.

On the crappie front, Captain Brad reports that fishing has been tough at best.

A few fish have been caught tight-lining way up the rivers 10-12 feet down in 12-15 feet of water, and there have also been a handful of fish caught around deep docks and bridges.

The Lake Murray Fall CATT Final was Dec. 16, and more bass information will be forthcoming after that.

Everyone seems to be concentrating on rocks with baits like crankbaits, jigs and Alabama rigs.

Brookland-Cayce girls' basketball coach LaBron Brown pushes his team to get better, and it's paying off.

The Region 5-3A Lady Bearcats were ranked 10th in the Jan. 10 Class 3A S.C. Basketball Coaches Association poll.

Brookland-Cayce owns region wins over Pelion and Gilbert entering Tuesday's showdown with Swansea.

The Lady Bearcats also avenged an early-season home loss to archrival and Class 4A Airport on the road.

"It's rewarding," said Brown of the ranking. "We're headed in the right direction."

He also said he tells his team it will have to keep working hard to stay ranked.

"We can be not ranked, as quickly just like we got ranked," he said.

To this point, senior captain Mya Benn, a guard, has been a catalyst for the Lady Bearcats. She is averaging a double-double in rebounds and points.

Forward AAbreah Keitt is also averaging a doubledouble at 14 points and 10 rebounds a game.

ple-double in the same game versus Pelion. Ben had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals and Keitt had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals in the game.

Brown said he is also getting strong play from guard Ziniya Pettus.

"She's a steady floor general and good ball handler," he said.

Brown said his approach

in practice is to teach "winning every day."

"If a player is struggling in one area of her game and needs to improve, we focus on that, and get better," Brown said.

As the season moves forward, Brown has a message for his players.

"We will take it one game at a time, and just try to keep improving," he said.

Studies have been done to prove this!

Children with these types of problems really need to have a team of professionals to help them. But the dentist is the one who needs to recognize the need for the referrals! And the age of 4 may be the best time to start looking at and correcting these problems.

Your veterinarian will want to check the skin but also should be checking the ears.

5. “My dog’s ears will be cured so he’ll never get another infection.” Unfortunately, this is often not the case when underlying allergies are involved. If an allergy wasn’t the cause, the infection may not recur. If allergies were the cause, your pet’s ears will be managed along with the allergy over the lifetime of your pet. You and your veterinarian will form a team to keep watch over the ears of your pet.

You may have to do routine maintenance care long term to help prevent inflammation and infection.

Since we are on the topic of allergies and skin, another common skin problem I see are “hot spots.”

Many dog owners are familiar with hot spots as are their dogs. A hot spot is an area of the skin that is raw and very painful. It is usually red and the hair has been rubbed out or fallen out.

Any hair that remains in or around the inflamed area of ouch is usually matted and crusted over. The spots look like severe, odorous rug burns.

The medical term for a hot spot is pyotraumatic dermatitis, but the term hot spot is much more descriptive as they can arise very quickly.

Hot spots are painful, and it is best to prevent them.

What causes hot spots to occur? The most com-

mon cause is flea allergies, though any allergy can trigger a hot spot or anything that causes a dog to scratch an area till inflamed.

Once the skin surface is damaged and becomes ulcerated it is susceptible to infection.

Once infection is present it sets up a bad cycle where the more the pet licks and chews at the spot the worse it becomes and the more it itches.

Your pet needs help to break the cycle. Certain breeds of dog seem to be prone to hot spots.

These include Rottweilers, German shepherds, and golden retrievers. It’s possible these breeds may be genetically predisposed to hot spots.

Another thought is it may be related to the type of

hair coat or other genetically linked issues such as allergies. Any dog can get a hot spot if the circumstances are right.

If you see the warning signs (itching, licking, or biting at a particular area and thinning hair) before odor and moisture develop, sometimes you can keep it from progressing.

You must prevent your dog from irritating the spot further with licking and scratching. If flea allergies can trigger the problem, be sure to keep your dog on a good yearround flea control program.

Some hot spots can be treated topically, but others may require oral antibiotics. You will need medication to stop the itching and antihistamines will rarely be effective.

The area also needs to be clipped and cleaned, but this can be difficult as the spot can be very painful. Treatment generally requires a visit to your veterinarian.

In cases of large hot spots, your pet may even benefit from sedation to adequately clip and clean the area.

Your pet may go home with topical medications, oral antibiotics, and oral medication to stop the itching.

Prevention of hot spots includes trying to eliminate or control causes of allergies. Discuss good flea control with your veterinarian.

Also, your veterinarian can make recommendations for helping control environmental allergies. You may not be able to stop every hot spot, but your dog will appreciate your effort.

Effective flu fighters

old and flu season has arrived with record numbers of sick children and adults.

There are antiviral medications available for the flu, but to be effective they must be taken within two days of the onset of symptoms.

Antiviral medications don’t cure the flu, but may make the symptoms less severe.

Your health-care provider can help you decide whether you should take antiviral medications.

If in spite of all your efforts you become ill, take good care of yourself. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and pay attention to your symptoms.

The common cold, the flu and pneumonia can have similar symptoms.

Mistaking one for the other can mean serious complications. Don’t gamble with your health. Contact your health-care provider immediately!

Of course, a flu shot is the best way to keep from getting some strains the flu, or to at least lessen its intensity if you do catch it.

If can’t get a flu shot, a pneumonia shot can protect you against this potentially serious flu complication.

It’s a one-time shot for anyone age 65 or older.

Younger people with heart and lung diseases, diabetes or weak immune systems also should get this shot.

Check with your or your child’s health care provider before you get any of these shots.

While there are no guarantees, there are some things you can do to reduce your chances of becoming ill: — Wash your hands often, particularly when you are around people who have colds or coughs.

— Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. This is a common way that germs spread.

— Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

— Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

And if you’re sick, stay home. Keeping your dis-

tance from others will protect them from getting sick too.

— Sanitize utensils, toys, equipment and furniture.

This can help reduce the spread of colds, which then reduces your risk of developing more serious complications like pneumonia.

— If you’re generally in good health, your immune system is better able to fight off illnesses. Get plenty of rest, exercise, eat right and learn how to manage your stress.

— Chicken soup is an old remedy for fighting respiratory illnesses; however, some recent scientific tests show that it actually may have medicinal value.

Chicken soup has been found to be more effective than other hot liquids to increase the movement of nasal mucus. It also improves the function of cilia, tiny hairlike projections in the nose that prevent contagions from entering the body.

Eating chicken soup also inhibits the movement of a common white blood cell called neutrophils that defends against infection. By inhibiting the migration of these infection-fighting cells throughout body, chicken soup essentially helps focus the cells to reduce upper-respiratory cold symptoms.

This recipe for Chicken Noodle Soup with Lemon and Ginger will help you through this frigid flu and cold season! Be well!

1. Finely grate 1 teaspoon of zest from the lemon and put in a small bowl.

Add the cilantro, parsley or basil leaves and the ginger, and mix together. Cut the zested lemon in half and squeeze it into a small bowl to get 3 tablespoons of juice. Thinly slice two of the chile halves crosswise.

2. In a large saucepan, bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat.

Add the lemon juice, noo-

dles, carrots, fish sauce and the 2 remaining chile halves to the boiling stock.

Reduce heat, cover and simmer the soup until the noodles are almost cooked, about 3 minutes.

3. Remove the chile halves. Stir in the chicken and chile slices and return to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat, making sure the chicken slices are just cooked through. Taste and add a touch more fish

sauce, if you like. Divide the soup evenly among four serving bowls. Divide the cilantro mixture among the bowls, stir and serve.

Makes 4 servings.
