FISHING REPORT Lake Murray: Catfish: Fair. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the latest big rains and large influx of water have caused the catfish to scatter and become a little difficult to catch. Once located fish are willing to bite, but they can be hard to find. Creek and river channel ledges are the most consistent areas to find a few feeding fish, but if you spend the time searching flats with baitfish you may find some fish that are feeding very aggressively. Drifting is the best way to cover water and find feeding fish, and there is nothing wrong with re-drifting the same water if you

find some feeding fish on the first run. Cut herring and shad are the best baits right now.

Striped bass: Fair. Captain Brad Taylor reports that good numbers of striper made their way up the river in their annual run, but the rains created muddy water and so a lot of the fish moved back down the lake below the mud line. The fish that stayed up the lake scattered out and became harder to locate, and they seem to be feeding less. Overall the best bet right now is to fish down-lines in 40-45 feet of water down around Buffalo Creek and Rocky Creek, but the rivers may turn on again once the water settles out a bit. Keep your eyes open for schooling fish, and follow the birds, but surface activity has slowed a bit right now.

“I started a new practice last year,” the first one said.

“I insist that each of my employees take at least a week off every three months.”

“Why in the world would you do that?” the other asked.

She responded, “It’s the best way I know of to learn which ones I can do without.”

Planning Ahead One rainy evening, my husband and I emerged from a restaurant, only to find that he had locked the keys in the car. He insisted he could open the door with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one. There were none to be found.

He then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a coat hanger. After a few attempts, he got the door open, and we climbed in.

As we sat there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat. With a smug grin, he said, “Now if this ever happens again, I’ll have one.”

Summer Band The summer band class I taught was just getting underway when a large insect flew into the room. The sixth-graders, eager to play their shiny new instruments, tried to ignore the buzzing intruder, but eventually one student, Tommy, could stand it no more.

He rolled up his music book and swatted the insect and then stomped on it to ensure its fate.

“Is it a bee?” another student asked.

A lobster and Little Neck clams feast MacLeod and Jerry Bellune are spending their children’s inheritance and enjoying every minute of it. What follows is an account of their travels in New England.

Bethel, Maine

Holly Vaucher said the reason she came to Maine was to eat lobster every day.

She didn’t say she would do it every day. Just that she wanted to be able to do it.

Holly is a great cook and loves every minute she spends cooking in her kitchen in Lexington.

Like someone trying to lick an addiction, would she be happy eating what others cook for an entire week?

We would have to see.

With her husband Denis behind the wheel and MacLeod and I like kids in the back seat, we headed south an hour to Portland.

Strangers in town

We found a parking garage three blocks from the waterfront and walked downhill, stopping to chat with a well-fed gentleman with a white apron tied around his ample waist.

“Pardon us,” sir, but could you recommend a restaurant for lobster?” we asked.

He looked at us suspiciously, decided we didn’t look dangerous and said, “I cook them at home. They’re too expensive otherwise. All the restaurants are good but you might try J’s.”

We thanked him and walked on, stopping to ask the same of a well-dressed man, perhaps a lawyer or some other professional, for his recommendation.

“Go to J’s,” he said, “It’s right on the water and you can eat outside.”

Two votes for J’s.

We reached bustling Commerce Street which runs along the waterfront, found J’s and a table for four under a bright blue canopy.

Jacky Gerry, our waitress, was a friendly, outdoorsy lady with a wind-burned face.

Sbe brought menus, bread, cole slaw and drinks and recommended the broiled lobster and Little Neck clams. When our food arrived, she showed us how to crack the lobsters with our bare hands.

“I’ve done it a thousand times,” she said.

She also showed us how to bath the clams in bowls of broth and eat the fat little guys but not the necks which are covered with an unappetizing foreskin.

We asked about winter.

She conceded it is rough but “this is home.”

Does she ever think of moving south? “Every February,” she said.

She stopped another waiter and introduced us.

He was her son and they like working her for the owner, Janice “J” Noyes.

The lobster and clams were terrific but pricey.

With a 20% tip, the bill came to only $144.09.

They were on their way to Bar Harbor and the ferry to visit her. We remembered our own visit to Nova Scotia in the 1960s. It is a charming place of narrow roads and old world charm.

Jefferson Davis, Dave said, had been an Army engineer before the war of Northern Aggression and his election as president of the Confederacy.

He had planned a series of batteries around the harbor to protect it from entry by foreign invaders.

Test of manhood

The harbor is dotted with small islands, many with summer homes but no roads. Access is only by water. Their owners lock them up at summer’s end until warm weather returns.

“My uncle said, boy, you stay here with me for a year, and you will never want to go back,” Manos said. “He was right.”

Manos was enrolled in school three days after he got to Columbia. He was put back one year at Taylor Grammar School. He had no problem with math, but he could not speak English.

Manos said he remembers a teacher named Mrs. Brooks who really helped him. She assigned one of the brighter students to help Manos learn the language of his new country. Manos worked hard to learn.

“At night, I'd lay in bed and repeat the words I'd learned that day so I did not forget them,” Manos said.

He also said he still appreciates the help afforded him by kind people.

By the time he was 13, Manos had a job in his uncle's restaurant in Five Points. He also studied America, its systems and institutions. In the ninth grade Manos took a test and became an America citizen.

“I love this country. I'm proud to be an American,” Manos said. He said he “did it the right way” and he believes anyone entering the country should have to educate themselves about what America stands for.

As a Columbia High School student Manos played football. He practiced football until about 5 p.m., then went to work in the restaurant until 10 p.m. or later. Then he did his homework after work. It was a full schedule, but Manos loved it. He made many friends in school and still corresponds with some of them today.

“I have always respected the military,” said Manos.

He said President Ronald Reagan was his favorite and Reagan showed that there is no peace without national defense. After high school, Manos served two years in the U.S. Army as a military policemen and six years in the Reserves.

When he got out of the army, Manos planned to enroll at USC, but opportunity knocked.

A cousin, Angelo Tsiantis, told him of small restaurant front, that sold nothing more than hot dogs and ice

cream in Triangle City.

“I came over and looked at it,” Manos said. “It was a small place, maybe 10-by15 or -20,” Manos said. He and Tsiantis bought it for Manos to run.

Over the years, with Manos work, it grew.

“I'd work seven days a week, 60 to 90 hours a week,” Manos said.

He said a friend once kidded him about fast-food franchises putting him out of business.

“There is no way. They cannot outwork me,” Manos said.

And for his handwork,

Manos has been rewarded, not only has he earned success, others have noticed.

In January of 2014, Manos was honored by the South Carolina Senate with a Resolution recognizing his accomplishments. In November he was inducted into the S.C. Hospitality Hall of Fame. And earlier this month, Manos was commended by the City of West Columbia.

In summing it up, Manos makes no apologies. “I have worked hard and it shows you can be successful,” He said. “I am an example of the American Dream.”
