Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 353.88 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures range from 49 at the dam to the mid-40s around Buffalo Creek to the low 40s in the river.

Most of the lake has pretty good visibility.

There have been some pretty good bags of bass weighed in recent tournaments, but veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that with very low temperatures fish will be caught in some particular patterns.

Jerkbaits and Alabama rigs are good options with water temperatures in the 40s, and you can also catch some fish on the bottom with a shakey head.

However, these are likely to be smaller keepers.

Jigging spoons are also in play right now, particularly in areas where you find bait balls in about 25-30 feet of water.

Staley, now in his sixth season as the running backs coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, will be coaching on the sidelines during Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, Feb. 4, as former USC teammates Stephon Gilmore and Alshon Jeffrey clash on the field.

Eagles' head coach Kirk Burnett coached at Irmo High in 1993 during Staley's senior year.

Whenever Staley visits, Burnett said he still commands the attention oncampus.

AG: S.C. recovered $215K in food stamp fraud in 2017 State Attorney General Alan Wilson announced last week that restitution totaling $215,249.46 has been paid back in South Carolina from food stamp fraud cases in 2017.

During 2017, 60 individuals were prosecuted state-wide for food stamp fraud with $209,132.67 in restitution ordered to the Department of Social Services (DSS) related to these convictions.

Cayce Woman’s Club marks 80 years of service

Mayor Elise Partin and the Cayce City Council marked a milestone anniversary of the Cayce Woman’s Club at council’s January Meeting.

“We are excited to consider a resolution recognizing the Woman’s Club on their 80th anniversary,” Partin said.

In addition to approving the resolution Partin welcomed Woman’s Club members to the front of council chambers for a

photo to mark the event.

Partin also chronicled some of the club’s history and its involvement in the City of Cayce.

The Woman’s Club was founded in 1937. In 1939 land was donated to the group, according to Partin.

Then in 1940, 34 members of the club authorized a bank note for $1,000 to build a club house.

“Since then, the club house has been in continuous use serving as a focal point of the com-

munity,” Partin said. The Woman’s Club also established the Cayce-West Columbia Library in 1949.

“My children have grown up loving the library. My son has volunteered there many years now,” she said.

Partin then congratulated the women of the club, and expressed council’s heartfelt appreciation to them.

Council, and Partin, also acknowledged Leo Redmond who was director of the Cayce Historical Museum for 23 years.

Redmond recently retired.

“Leo was born in Cayce and is a lifelong resident,” Partin said. “He was one of the founders who built the museum and donated it in 1991.

Then he began working there in 1994.”

Partin also said Cayce residents should be proud of Redmond’s work to maintain the museum for educational purposes.

The flu is gaining on us.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expect the death toll to rise.

Crucial supplies are running low across the nation, including lifesaving ventilators, and staff shortages are deepening as nurses and other personnel fall ill.

Despite medical advances, health officials say we are as vulnerable today to a flu pandemic as we were during the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, which killed 50 to 100 million people worldwide.

Vaccines in recent years have, on average, reduced the risk of flu illness among those vaccinated by just 40% (less than 30% this year).

Antiviral drugs only slow the virus — we have no reliable way to destroy it.

(R) — In a remote section of Yorkshire, Johnny (Josh O’Connor) toils at his family farm, tough hardscrabble work with his only escape being cheap assignations after a night of heavy drinking at the local pub.

Into this life of desolation comes Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), a Romanian migrant who will assist in lambing season.

The heart wants what the heart wants, even in — or maybe especially in — adverse circumstances.

The longing and loneliness and humanness of these two men are palpable and real.

It’s an exceptionally welldone love story from a firsttime director (Francis Lee) and a breakout role for O’Connor.

Last Flag Flying (R) — Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne head up this heartwarming story of three Vietnam veteran buddies — one Navy corpsman and two Marines — who reconvene in present day for a mission of love and friendship.

Larry “Doc” Shepard (Carrell) gets the news that his son, a Marine, has been killed in Iraq.

He enlists his friends Sal (Cranston), a rowdy bar owner, and Richard (Fishburne), former womanizer and troublemaker turned reverend, to help him bury his son.

Doc decides against an Arlington funeral, opting instead to bring his son home to New Hampshire.

Easier said than done.

Along the way, director Richard Linklater paints a portrait of these heroes (of both generations) with equal measures of reminiscing and ribbing.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (R) — Yowza.

This is no Marvel feature: It’s the biographical tale of psychologist William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), the creator of Wonder Woman, along with his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their live-in mistress Olive (Bella Heathcote).

Marston and Elizabeth both are involved in research into dominance theory, and William becomes intrigued by Olive, a student who becomes his teaching assistant.

The trio develop a romantic relationship that spans decades.

It’s fascinating and quite sexualized.

But then, it is about Wonder Woman, who by Elizabeth’s description: “wears a burlesque outfit and all her friends in Harper’s Bazaar are sorority girls who have spanking parties, and everybody fights Nazis and rides in an invisible plane.”

You better believe it.

Gridiron grub: Halftime means snack time

I

must admit, I love watching football games. We traditionally watch the Super Bowl at our friends' home while sitting in the same comfortable recliners, and with the same results ... my favorite teams loses!

The cheering, jeering and excitement can create a hearty appetite, and no one wants to miss a minute of the game while grabbing something to eat.

These super snacks can be prepared ahead of time and will satisfy the biggest football fans without taking the host or hostess away from the game.

While I might not pick a winning team, I'm always voted MVC (Most Valuable Chef) when halftime rolls around and these snacks are served!

Buffalo chicken dip • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened • 1 cup cooked chicken breast • ½ cup Buffalo wing sauce • ½ cup ranch or blue cheese salad dressing • 2 cups shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese • French bread baguette slices, celery ribs, carrot sticks or tortilla chips 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spread cream cheese into an ungreased shallow 1 quart baking dish. Layer with chicken, wing sauce and salad dressing. Sprinkle with cheese.

2. Bake, covered with foil, 20-25 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Serve with baguette slices, celery or carrot sticks, or tortilla chips.

Feel free to use a good-quality, packaged cornbread mix if you're pressed for time, and add in the serrano chiles as directed to the packaged mix.

• ¼ cup vegetable oil • 1 pound ground beef chuck (80/20 mix) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 medium bell peppers, seeded, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon chili powder • ¼ teaspoon ground chipotle chile • 1 can (14 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes • 1 can (14 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained • 1 can (14 ounces) refried beans • 1 can (14 ounces) whole kernel corn • 2/3 cup fine- to medium-ground cornmeal • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 large egg • 2/3 cup milk • 2 serrano chiles, thinly sliced Cilantro, for garnish 1. Heat oven to 400 F. In ovensafe 12-inch skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil on medium. Add beef; cook 3 minutes or until browned, breaking up meat. With slotted spoon, transfer beef to bowl; discard excess fat.

2. To same skillet, add onion and peppers; cook 7 minutes, stirring. Add garlic, chili powder and chipotle chile. Cook 2 minutes, stirring.

3. Return beef to skillet. Stir in tomatoes, beans, corn and ½ teaspoon salt. Cook 3 minutes or until mixture is hot. Remove from heat.

4. Meanwhile, whisk cornmeal, flour, baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt. In separate bowl, whisk egg, milk and remaining 3 tablespoons oil; add to cornmeal, stirring to combine. Fold half of

serrano chiles into batter. Pour over beef mixture, spreading to cover. Dot top with remaining serranos.

5. Transfer skillet to oven.

Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted into topping comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes.

Garnish with cilantro. Serves 6-8.

Novel explores rape, racism and murder World champion public speaker, author and Chronicle columnist Michael Aun recommends one of his favorite novels, “A Time to Kill” by best-selling author John Grisham.

O

f the nearly 30 books he has written, my favorite John Grisham novel happened to be his first, “A Time to Kill,” a 1988 legal thriller.

What makes this book so interesting to me was it was repeatedly rejected by many publishers before Wynwood Press gave it a modest 5,000- copy printing.

I especially like to read fiction because I make a studied effort to look for two things in any book: How the author unveils the story and how it relates to me.

Grisham’s first book takes place in the fictional town of Clanton, Mississippi in the 1980’s. Fictional or not, it mirrored what America in the deep-south was really like. In my home town of Lexington, South Carolina I saw some of the same toxic characteristics growing up.

I grew up with the nickname “Jew boy” because in the old deep-south, you were either white, black or a Jew. We were in the third category, despite that I was of Lebanese descent and Catholic by faith.

What do you like?

Railroads hired extra crews to clear the rails; but just as soon as they dug out a path, another storm blew up and covered it.

It was a critically serious situation. Trains brought the food, fuel, clothing and medicine necessary for survival. No trains, no vital goods.

Laura didn’t exaggerate in The Long Winter. In fact, scholars are impressed by the book’s historical accuracy.

The ordeal was so horrific, she could recall specific details about it when she wrote her story 60 years later.

Journalists struggled to find a word strong enough to convey the power of the unrelenting winter storms. Some unsung scribe hit upon “blizzard,” and the word caught on.

Suddenly, blizzard spread like wildfire in newspaper and magazine stories about the bad weather.

It became so popular so fast, The Nation observed in early 1881: “The hard weather has called into use a word which promises to become a national Americanism, namely ‘blizzard’ … the blizzard of snow has knocked out the former meaning of mere human violence.”

He was right; when was the last time you heard someone describe a fistfight as a “blizzard”?

It finally stopped snowing that April.

But the trouble wasn’t over. All that melting snow caused terrible flooding.

In fact, the town of Yankton, South Dakota was almost entirely swept away.

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service — U.S. Taxing Authority) sends out 8 billion pages of forms and instructions each year.

Laid end to end, they would stretch 28 times around the earth.

Nearly 300,000 trees are cut down yearly to produce the paper for all the IRS forms and instructions.

American taxpayers spend $200 billion and 5.4 billion hours working to comply with federal taxes each year, more than it takes to produce every car, truck, and van

in the United States.

The burden of compliance is the equivalent to a staff of 3 million people working full time for a year, just to comply with the taxes on individuals and businesses.

The IRS employs 114,000 people; that’s twice as many as the CIA and five times more than the FBI. 60% of taxpayers must hire a professional to get through their own return.

Taxes eat up 38.2% of the average family’s income; that’s more than for food, clothing and shelter combined.

And that is only the federal (national) tax – it does not include the state, county, local, sales, property taxes and others.
