Teller stars as Vinny Pazienza, a boxer who came from behind to win huge titles, then came from behind again by stepping back into the ring after a car accident that nearly paralyzed him.

After a head-on crash puts “The Pazmanian Devil” in a halo-brace, he’s told he’ll be lucky to walk again, and the slightest jolt to his head or neck could be the end.

This is unacceptable, and with the help of an equally dogged trainer (Aaron Eckhart), the near-broken boxer starts to train again — still with vertebrae out of whack and bolts drilled in his head.

It’s based on a true story, but so are most boxing movies, and this one is a lot like them.

The constant underdog-ism, the working-class neighborhood and inspirational turnarounds, all pretty conventional. But even if it’s by the

book, that’s still not enough to bring down the energy and performances.

The Edge of Seventeen

(R) — Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) is really in the thick of the adolescent awkwards, but this isn’t the wild-romp kind of teen movie, it’s the more insightful, John Hughes-ian kind where coming-of-age proves to be a funny and humiliating parade of disappointment and self-sabotage.

Nadine is left all alone when her only pal, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), starts dating her older brother, a frustratingly perfect student and athlete.

Her only confidante is her flippant history teacher (Woody Harrelson), who doesn’t hesitate to mock her teen turmoil.

The story succeeds in keeping you on the heroine’s side even as she succumbs to the mistakes we all know she should see coming a mile away.

Chubbuck (Rebecca Hall) was a sharp and ambitious journalist at a local-news station in Florida.

Director Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) sets out to combine massive, world-tilting sci-fi conflicts with up-close intimate character conflicts and emotion. “Interstellar” tried to plot this same course, but “Arrival” doesn’t get caught in the asteroid field of gooberiness that plagued “Interstellar’s” mission.

UNDER the radar Eagles’ 2-sport standout wants to play at next level

Will it be football or basketball?

Airport High School's C.J. Wright wants to play in college.

He is currently playing basketball for the Eagles, where this past weekend surpassed the 1,000-point career mark.

Wright also played football this past fall.

He has started all four years of high school at guard on the basketball team. Wright was also a 3-year starter in football, playing wide receiver and safety.

North Greenville and Newberry are both possibilities for Wright to play on the collegiate level. He may also be a candidate for junior college, Airport head coach Kirk Burnett said.

There is an even a chance of Wright being offered a scholarship in either sport. As of now, Wright is not sure which sport he would rather play at the next level and that may leave some recruiters timid.

"No one has jumped in and

taken him yet, but we'll put him somewhere," Burnett said.

Wright is 6'3 and weighs 180 pounds. He was a key player for the Eagles this football season, helping lead his team to a first-round playoff victory.

One of his standout games in football came during an Oct. 14 home victory over Aiken. In that game, Wright had 99 yards receiving and scored a touchdown.

He finished the season with over 800 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.

This basketball season, Wright has been a team leader and a standout player for the Eagles.

One of Wright's better performances on the court came at Brookland-Cayce on Jan. 24 where he scored 31 points in a losing effort.

Burnett said in football Wright is explosive on both sides of the ball and has great speed. In basketball he scores a lot, is very active on offense and defense and he is highly competitive.

It’s a Dog’s Life

Good news, bad news The accountant told his client, “There’s good news, and there’s bad news.”

“Give me the bad news first,” the client said nervously.

“The bad news is that your business is flat on it’s back.”

The business person asked hopefully, “then what’s the good news?”

“It’s looking up!”

Upsetting the wagon A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of wheat on the road.

The farmer that lived nearby came to investigate.

“Hey, son,” he called out, “forget your troubles for a while and come and have dinner with us. Then I’ll help you overturn the wagon.”

“That’s very nice of you,” Willis answered, “but I don’t think Dad would like me to.”

“Aw, come on, son!” the farmer insisted.

“Well, OK,” the boy finally agreed, “but Dad won’t like it.”

After a hearty dinner, the boy thanked the host.

“I feel a lot better now, but I know Dad’s going to be real upset,” the boy said.

“Don’t be silly!” said the neighbor. “By the way, where is he?”

“Under the wagon,” replied the boy.

The gentleman kept repeating softly, “Don’t get excited, Albert; don’t scream, Albert; don’t yell, Albert; keep calm, Albert.”

A woman standing next to him said, “You certainly are to be commended for trying to soothe your son, Albert.”

The man looked at her and said, “Lady, I’m Albert.”

Pirate luck A sailor and a pirate are drinking at a waterfront bar and they proceed to swap sea

stories. The sailor notes the pirate’s peg leg, eye patch and hook.

“So tell me,” asks the sailor, “how did you come to lose that leg?”

“Arrgh,” says the pirate, “’Twas a black squall swept me overboard. Whilst in the water, a shark snapped me leg off and I’ve had this peg leg ever since.”

“Wow!” says the sailor. “And how’d you get the hook?”

“We was fighting in close quarters,” says the pirate.

“Some scurvy dog with a cutlass hacked me hand off and I’ve had this hook ever since.”

“Amazing!” says the sailor. “And what about the eye patch?”

“Arrgh,” says the pirate. “’Twas a seagull pooped in me eye.”

“A seagull?” asks the sailor, a bit incredulous.

“Well, I should explain,” says the pirate. “’Twas me first day with the new hook.”

Where am I? Bob was driving to work when a truck ran a stop sign, hit his car broadside, and knocked him cold.

Passersby pulled him from the wreck and revived him.

Bob began a terrific struggle and had to be tranquilized by the medics.

Later, when Bob was calm, they asked him why he struggled so.

Bob said, “I remembered the

impact, then nothing. I woke up on a concrete slab in front of a huge, flashing sign. Turns out somebody was standing in front of the ‘S’ on the ‘Shell’ sign.”

I’m the boss The company boss was complaining in a staff meeting that he wasn’t getting any respect.

Later that morning, he went to a local sign shop and bought a small sign that read “I’m the Boss!”

He then taped it to his office door.

Later that day when he returned from lunch, he found that someone had taped a note to the sign that said “Your wife called, she wants her sign back!”

Porcupine encounter A local veterinarian in the Northeast was known for his wry humor.

He surpassed himself one summer day when a city dog was brought to him after an encounter with a porcupine.

After almost an hour of prying, pulling, cutting and stitching, he returned the dog to its owner, who asked what she owed.

“Fifteen hundred dollars, Ma’am,” he answered.

“Why that’s simply outrageous!” she stormed.

LMC cook, pharmacy technician deliver baby in lobby

Friday, Jan. 13, was no ordinary work day for Jennifer Bandy and Yolanda Butler.

Jennifer is a cook at the Park Café inside Lexington Medical Park 1 at Lexington Medical Center. Yolanda is a pharmacy technician at Lexington Oncology, a Lexington Medical Center physician practice.

Just before sunrise, they heard shouts for help from the building’s entrance.

Running toward the door, they found Danielle Tilson of Batesburg about to deliver a baby. Byron Stewart, the baby's father, was by her side.

“Everything was happening so fast,” Jennifer said. “I knew we had to do something.”

Yolanda stepped in right away.

There was no time to get the expectant mom to the Emergency department or the Mother/Baby unit.

“I was reassuring Mom that everything was OK,” she said.

Just two minutes later, the café cook and pharmacy technician delivered baby Serenity Stewart in the lobby. They laid the little girl on tablecloths from the café and a blanket from Danielle and Byron’s car.

“She started blinking her eyes and moving — and that was a good feeling because we knew she was OK,” Jennifer said.

They learned Danielle and Byron were on their way to a hospital in downtown Columbia from their home in Batesburg, but didn’t think

they could make it in time.

So the couple pulled up to the Lexington Medical Park 1 entrance at Lexington Medical Center — the first entrance they saw on the hospital campus.

That building is filled with physician practices that patients visit during the day.

Early in the morning, hardly anyone was there — except for the Park Café staff and Yolanda, who just happened to come into work early that day.

Serenity is the couple’s fourth child. Everyone is doing well.

The couple is thankful for Jennifer and Yolanda’s quick response and willingness to help. They say they will bring Serenity back to the hospital to meet them one day.

Siamese place card holders were exotic table addition

hese stylized miniature solid silver figures of Siamese dancers have been expertly crafted to reflect the time period of 1900 and their country of origin.

Each figure has been cut from a larger piece of sheet silver. The detail has been achieved through piercing and hand engraving. There are a total of 8 with each bearing a completely different form of dancer. A close inspection reveals a content and pleasant expression on each of the female faces looking back at you.

After each figure was crafted it was attached by soldering to a circular, weighted silver base.

These bases are about the size of a quarter and are fashioned in the same way as a pair of sterling candle sticks. Many of you may own a pair of candle sticks that say “Weighted” or “Reinforced” on the base, along with the word “Sterling.” This arrangement of words indicates the purity of metal as well as the fact they are weighted, either with concrete or plaster, even wood, that acts as a ballast to keep them from being damaged or falling over when the candle is added.

These place card holders are made in much the same way with a ballast added to keep the dancers in place when a card is added to the back of each figure, facilitated by the small rod added to the back of each dancer.

According to news reports, scammers call and ask if you can hear them.

Their “Can you hear me?” question is designed to elicit a ‘yes’ response. When you say yes, they hang up.

They now have a recording of you saying yes to use to put fraudulent charges on your credit card or phone bills.

However, even though the Better Business Bureau (BBB) released a statement in October of 2016 and police agencies have been warning of this for the past few months, there has been no indication that anyone has actually been scammed by this.

The police reports and BBB reports have a few quotes of people who’ve received the phone calls.

What does this mean for you?

If you don’t know who the phone call is from and they ask if you can hear them, just hang up.

It is always better to be safe than sorry.

If you receive one of this phone calls, watch your credit card and your phone bills closely.

Typically if they have your cellphone number they know how to charge to your cell phone provider’s bill and will use your “yes” as a way to prove that you agreed to the charge.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.03 (full pool is 360.00) and water temperatures range from between 53 and 55 degrees at the dam on up to the upper 50s on warm days like today in the creeks.

The lake is clearing again after recent weather, but still has a ways to go.

Even though water temperatures have rebounded after the snow and cold weather recently, the fishing has slowed down pretty significantly since that event.

come by in recent days and tournament sacks have been light.

For a while, conditions were fairly stable and it looked like fish might settle into a pattern, but seesawing temperatures have ruined any chance of that (for now).

Fish could certainly still get into a good winter pattern, but for now they seem to be moving shallower and not repositioning themselves deep.

Veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown says that with days still very short, fish are certainly not getting into a pre-spawn pattern.

Instead of holding to the 45-degree banks they often like at this time of year, they aren’t in those areas. Instead, they are trying to move shallower because of the warm weather.

Some fish seem to be moving into pockets and ditches,

because when the shallows warm crayfish get more active and shad and bluegill may come up.

There is even some surface activity at times.

Right now, Doug says as good a lure for getting bit as anything is a shakey head worm, and he recommends fishing it in areas that aren’t very flat or very steep. Being relatively near deep water is a plus, and fishing rocky points, docks, wood or other shallow cover in 4-10 feet of water is a good bet.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that the warm weather has pulled a lot of fish back out of the river and creek channels, and scattered them across flats and main lake humps.

Drifting cut herring in 25-40 feet of water is the best pattern, and overall the bite is a little more challenging than when it was colder earlier in the month.

When the orphan train came to town: Love rolled in on steel rails

A

merica grew because of westward migration. We all know the stories of hardy pioneers loading covered wagons and heading west.

Yet for 75 years a much different type of westward movement relocated nearly half a million people in new homes far away.

This is the story of the Orphan Trains.

In the early 1850s, Charles Brace looked around New York City’s filthy streets.

And what he saw broke his heart.

The 26-year-old was a newly ordained minister, and he was appalled by all the poverty. He was particularly touched by what police officers snidely dismissed as “street rats” and “street Arabs” (because they constantly moved around).

They were homeless children: orphaned, abandoned or disowned by their families.
