PICKS OF THE WEEK Manchester by the Sea

(R) — After the passing of his brother, loner Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) finds that he has been left as the sole guardian of his 16-yearold nephew, Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Having lived in self-imposed exile for years after an unspeakable tragedy, Lee doesn’t want to stay in the town where he’ll have to face his memories or see pain reflected in the eyes of his exwife (Michelle Williams).

Writer and director Kenneth Lonergan makes a movie that deals with hard emotions without being hard to watch.

It’s painful without wallowing and life-affirming without falling for the traps of cornball

“uplifting movies” (don’t confuse this with one of those).

Great performances from Affleck and Williams come as little surprise, but Hedges, the newcomer, really makes a splash as a teen who is complicated in the right ways.

Hacksaw Ridge (R) — Des-

mond Doss was a pacifist who refused to carry a weapon on the frontlines of World War II, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor without ever firing a shot.

This dramatization shows Doss (Andrew Garfield) as he disobeys his father to enlist — he believes that the war is just, that it must be won, but he is firmly against killing and enlists as a medic. Many in the Army take issue with his convictions, but Doss later proves his courage during one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Mel Gibson directs, and it really shows during the highaction scenes. Many have noted that for a movie that champions the pacifist, it sure seems to get a kick out of brutality.

The pre-war scenes aren’t as strong and don’t give a complete picture of how Doss, a Seventh-Day Adventist, fits in with his religious and secular communities at home. However, scenes with his father (Hugo Weaving) have considerable weight.

Bad Santa 2 (R) — Foul-

mouthed and unrepentant jerk Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) has been out of jail for a while, and after some poorly timed ogling, he’s out of a job, too.

His old partner in crime, Marcus (Tony Cox), recruits Willie for another Santa-andhis-elf heist, this time stealing a seven-figure score from a charity in Chicago.

Joining the crew is Willie’s mother (Kathy Bates), who is predictably just as abrasive as her son. It’s not Bates or anyone else on screen throwing off the vibe, but this sequel misses the tone and laughter of the first.

Nocturnal Animals (R) — Susan (Amy Adams) has the

big house in the hills and the handsome husband, but she can’t sleep. Her husband’s acting shady, they might not be wealthy for long, and she’s just received a novel by her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) called “Nocturnal Animals” — based on a pet name he had for her.

The novel’s story takes over much of the film, and follows the terrible arc of a father

(also Jake Gyllenhaal) whose wife and daughter are taken by crazies in some dusty corner of Texas.

The whole film is twisty turny with uneven results as Susan tries to find some meaning in the connections between the violent story of the novel and the decisions she made with her ex-husband.

State colleges getting boost from local talent

Running back Catriez Cook of Gilbert and quarterback Reese Nichols of Dutch Fork entered the 2016 season with question marks.

Cook was moved from linebacker.

Nichols was a first-year starter.

Both led their teams to historic achievements and shared this year’s Lexington County Chronicle Player of the Year award.

Cook led the Indians to a school-record nine straight wins and 10 victories.

Nichols helped the Silver Foxes win their third state title and become the first Class 5A champion with a 15-0 record.

For the next four years, they will seek continued success at Newberry College. Both signed national letters of intent with the South Atlantic Conference school.

“It was a hard process because there were a couple of schools I was looking at,” Cook said. “Newberry interested me the most.”

The lone player signed by one of the Palmetto State’s “Big Two” schools made it official Wednesday at Chapin High. Tight End Will Register was one of three football players who signed on campus. “(I want to) just go in, make an impact and bring South Carolina to the top of college football in any way that I can possibly contribute,” Register told SEC Country.

On some air bases the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle.

One day the tower on one particular base received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?”

The tower responded, “Who is calling?”

The aircraft replied, “What difference does it make?”

The tower replied “It makes a lot of difference: If it is an American Airlines Flight, it is 3 o’clock.

If it is an Air Force, it is 1500 hours.

If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells.

If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3.

If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon.”

Growing annoyed, the clerk brought out a tiny $15 bottle.

“What I mean,” said Tom, “is I’d like to see something really cheap.”

So the clerk handed him a mirror.

“I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. But, the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down.

“So, I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in.

I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”

The guy says, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”

Ridge Protection Coalition continues resistance effort against Vulcan quarry

For more than two years, the Ridge Protection Coalition has been striving to protect what its community holds dear.

Initial estimates indicated as many as 9,000 homes and farms would be affected by the quarry planned for a plot of land off U.S. Highway 1 near Batesburg-Leesville by Vulcan Materials Co. As activists rallied, the quarry seemed well-contested until the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control approved a permit that greenlighted Vulcan's plans.

Despite the situation seemingly slipping out of their fingers, the Ridge Protection Coalition, a local activist group hellbent on fighting the proposed 543-acre site, isn't giving up.

"The Ridge Protection Coalition has filed Requests for Board Review of the Mine Operating Permit, Air Quality Construction Permit, and General Permit coverage for water discharges," said Mel Browne of the RPC.

"Given the rural nature of the area, neither city nor county water systems service is available. All nearby residents rely on wells."

Browne charges that any activity that threatens the availability of drinkable water reduces the value of the properties in the area. He says residents are heavily invested, many with agricultural interests.

they're affected, Browne said, there's no short-term solution, and any long-term solution would be costly.

"Contingency plans are poorly defined," he said, "and funding for those contingencies is even more poorly defined."

Epergne is elegant display for fruit, nuts and flowers

his lovely sectional centerpiece was crafted at the turn of the 20th century of brass combined with the beautiful decorative accent of bronze doré.

Each of the three oval dishes rest within ring-form bases calibrated to specifically fit the base of each dish.

The framework of the base is made of hand-soldered sections of gilt metal which are configured to keep the narrowness of the overall piece in check, as the piece could have been used on many surfaces, including a narrow console table. This narrow configuration would also allow the piece to sit central to a turn of the century dining table, beautifully adding a decorative depth by resting under the brass and bronze chandeliers made popular during this period of time.

This epergne would have been even more lovely placed on a mirrored surface known as a plateau. It would have been made of the same material to form a pleasing surround that would also reflect items placed in the epergne bowls, illuminated by the chandelier above.

Each bowl could have been filled with nuts in the shell, berries in season, dried fruits and shelled nuts during the holidays.

Most beautiful of all, especially at this time in the South, would be to fill each of the three bowls with an assortment of beautiful camellias, many dating to the age of the epergne.

ansomware is malicious software.

Hackers will use it to bring down your computer until you cough up a ransom.

District of Columbia police report ransomware was used to bring down their closed circuit TV system.

Although no ransom was actually reported or paid, their surveillance devices were not recording.

The camera's themselves weren't actually the problem.

Instead, it was the video storage.

Hackers gained access to some of the storage and made it unusable.

Imagine the beauty as the camellias, highlighted by the chandelier above, are reflected in the mirrored surface of the plateau.

We can all appreciate their iconic beauty as we have grown up with them in the background of nearly every garden we know. The addition of Spanish moss would craft a southern centerpiece of lasting beauty, featuring a flower we have all loved for many generations.

We better hope that who ever did the hack didn't plan something more devious than just taking down the surveillance system.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.03 (full pool is 360.00) and water temperatures range from between 53 and 55 degrees at the dam on up to the upper 50s on warm days like today in the creeks.

The lake is clearing again after recent weather, but still has a ways to go.

Even though water temperatures have rebounded after the snow and cold weather recently, the fishing has slowed down pretty significantly since that event.

Limits have been hard to come by in recent days and tournament sacks have been light.

For a while, conditions were fairly stable and it looked like fish might settle into a pattern, but see-sawing temperatures have ruined any chance of that (for now).

That includes first lady Melania Trump, the former model who was born and raised in the former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia).

Believe it or not, she isn’t America’s first foreign-born first lady.
