Moana (PG) — Disney’s lat-

est fairy-tale adventure puts a chieftain’s daughter (so technically not a princess) on an ocean-faring adventure to restore the heart of a Pacific goddess.

Moana (voiced by teenage newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) is accompanied by a rooster sidekick and the scene-stealing presence of Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a once-powerful demigod with solid comedic timing and delivery.

Moana has some depth — she’s not looking for a charming chieftain’s son — and the movie’s not afraid to explore those depths.

Disney’s old magic is back and clearly on display: Veteran directors Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, Little Mermaid) bring expert knowledge of the genre and build on their past successes.

‘Mount Zion,’ Griffins too much for Northside Christian

For the first trip to the SCISA Class 2A boys’ basketball playoffs, Northside Christian Academy travelled to the Sumter County Civic Center.

On the itinierary, a visit to ‘Mount Zion’.

The Crusaders were matched with Spartanburg Day and their 6-6, 230-pound junior prospect considered one of the top high school players in the country.

Despite a supportive fan base and a healthy optimism, Northside Christian fell to the Griffins 75-37.

As expected, Williamson put on a show for the close to 1,300 fans who stood and held their camera phones every time he headed towards the rim. He posted a unique triple-double with 38 points — 28 in the first half — 11 rebounds and 10 monstrous slam dunks.

For Northside Christian 5’ 7” guard Trenton Jordan, who tipped off against Williamson to start the game, it was better than what he’s seen on the various YouTube videos.

“I saw his highlights. Everybody has seen his highlights,” Jordan said. “You knew what was coming with all the 360s and everything else. When you play against him, it’s like ‘Whoa, it’s right there,’ and you’re watching it live.”

Northside Christian trailed 15-0 before Nate Smith hit a 3-pointer to end the scoring drought. He would finish with a team-high 13 points.

However, the Griffins remained relentless with their fullcourt pressure, sometimes with the imposing Williamson at the wing. This led to two more crowd-pleasing slam dunks to take a 46-14 lead into the lockerroom.

The Crusaders were competitive in the second half, scoring 25 points and limiting the Griffins to 31.

Williamson did not play in the fourth quarter, when a running clock was utilized for the final eight minutes. Before his departure, he wowed the crowd once more with a tomahawk slam dunk as time expired in the fourth quarter.

aving recently had my own trip to the dentist, I wanted to talk about dental care for our pets.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month so this is a good time to check out your cat or dog’s smile. Admit it, you love your cat or dog but sometimes their breath will almost knock you over. In almost every case the cause is dental disease.

This is because they don’t brush or floss their teeth. As much as we try, our pets just can’t hold a toothbrush or use dental floss.

Dental disease is the most common disease we see in our pets. 80% of our dogs and 70% of our cats have periodontal or gum disease by the age of 3 years. Genetics can also play a part in accelerating your pet’s gum disease.

Gum disease is an infection that results from the accumulation of plaque or biofilm on the surfaces of the teeth around the gum. The bacteria in the plaque irritates the gum tissue.

When the plaque is allowed to accumulate, this will usually cause infection in the bone surrounding the teeth.

Tarter or calculus is mineralized plaque, the calcium coming from saliva. Tarter begins to form after a couple of days on a tooth surface that is not kept clean. The tarter provides a rough surface that causes further plaque accumulation.

Once it has begun to grow in thickness, tarter is difficult to remove without dental instruments.

Costs vary Your veterinarian will recommend dental treatment for your pet. Dental procedures vary and so do their costs. A comprehensive dental treatment will require general anesthesia to properly clean and evaluate each tooth. Once the teeth are cleaned, then a homecare plan should be adopted. The plan depends on your pet and what you have time to do. The gold stan-

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Pets

dard is to brush daily, but that is not realistic with some of our pets. Brushing four times a week is adequate to maintain healthy teeth and gums, but daily brushing is needed to control existing gingivitis.

Never use human toothpaste with your pet as they contain detergents and fluoride which can be harmful if swallowed.

Pet toothpaste is expected to be swallowed.

If you have a small dog or cat, sometimes a Q tip can be easier to use than a brush.

Don’t worry if your pet won’t let you brush the inner surface of the teeth. Most tarter forms on the outside surface of the teeth. Your veterinarian can give you more instruction on brushing.

If your pet won’t cooperate for brushing, there are other alternatives. Dental treats and chews such as Greenies, Oravet chews, milk bones for dental care, etc can be effective.

Greenies are now soy based and more flexible helping to eliminate some of their earlier problems. The only problem with most of these is you need to feed one a day to get the maximum effect.

If your pet has a weight issue, you may need to make adjustments to the amount of food they get each day. Rawhide chews reduce tarter, but you often have to feed 2-3 rawhide strips daily for 1-3 months.

Avoid meat bones as they are too hard and can cause tooth fractures. Any chew treat should have some flexibility otherwise it may fracture a tooth.

Try a diet Dental rinses, dental wipes and sprays provide antibacterial activity. There are also diets available to help. Hills Prescription Diet can be very effective if fed as the only diet for either your dog or cat.

The advantage of the diet is that you feed your pet every day. Consider a water additive if you don’t feel you have time to try other things. Your pet drinks water every day and adding water to a bowl is not too taxing for you either.

The Veterinary Oral Health

Council (VOHC) is like the ADA for people. Their website www.VOHC.org lists the products with their seal of approval. They have two seals of approval. One is for products that help control plaque, and the other is for products that help control tarter.

I wanted to talk about periodontal disease which refers to inflammation of the structures that support each tooth.

By addressing periodontal disease, you can help improve the health of your pet. One of the difficulties involved in periodontal disease is that your cat or dog may not show evidence that their mouth hurts or is infected. Our cats and dogs are very good at covering their pain and continue to eat and go about their daily activities. Sometimes only after the issues are addressed do we realize just how much they were being affected.

What we often call “doggie breath” is usually a good indication that pockets of bacteria are already forming below the gum line. Since you can’t readily see the problem, you don’t know it’s there. As one veterinary dentist put it “the teeth and gums are covered by the lips. If a red and bleeding tooth was on the tip of the nose, people would rush in to see their vet.”

Some of the signs that can be found with periodontal disease include bad breath, red swollen gums, tarter build up, reluctance to let you look at their teeth, you can see the roots of the teeth which should be covered by bone and gum, rubbing their face on carpets or furniture, ulcers in the mouth or lips, dropping food or hard treats, poor appetite, or decreased activity. There are actually several stages of periodontal disease.

If caught and treated in the early stage, it can be controlled and possibly reversed.

The later stages are much harder to deal with and often end with extraction of the tooth.

What to do So what do you do if your pet has periodontal disease?

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.88 (full pool is 360.00) and water temperatures at the dam are in the mid-50s.

Striped bass fishing has been good on Lake Murray, with Captain Brad Taylor (803-331-1354) reporting that the best bite is up the river around Riverwinds Landing on the Big Saluda.

The best bite has been a live bait bite, and the most successful pattern has been following the birds and pulling freelines through the areas they are in.

The bait and birds move around from day to day, and on warmer days they usually go shallower. Riverwinds has recently starting carrying live herring.

Fish can also be caught be caught chasing schooling fish and throwing bucktails and ice flies.

On warm, pretty days that bite is not as good as when conditions are more severe.

There have also been some good reports from the Ballentine area.

Tournament anglers Andy Wicker of Pomaria reports that the bass bite has not been as good as last year, and even though there were some 26-pound bags at the top of the CBC standings last weekend weights dropped off after that.

Last year when the lake was up and the water was heavily stained it took about 20 pounds to get a check, but this year about 15 was good enough.

A lot of anglers are fishing shallow right now, and crankbaits fished around rocks as well as jigs around docks have been popular patterns.

However, there are a lot of deep fish too and some big bags have been caught on jigging spoons and drop shot rigs in 3045 feet of water.

Guide Brad Fowler of Pendleton fished the CBC with tournament part-

ner Brent Long and cut a check with about 16 pounds. They found fish both shallow and deep and put together a bag with fish from a variety of depths.

Captain Brad Taylor reports that crappie are starting to be caught tight-lining in the mouths of creeks. The Little Saluda and Buffalo Creek have been the best areas, and the mouths of creeks have been the best places to fish. Depths vary from day to day but fishing jigs and minnows 6-8 feet deep over 12-15 feet of water has been the best bet.

On the catfish front, Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reports that fish remain pretty scattered, but now more fish are relating to the shallowest portion of humps. The best pattern is anchoring on humps that top out at about 15 feet of water and putting out cut herring.

Without dental x-rays the amount of bone loss, root abscesses, root fractures, or resorptive lesions can’t be seen.

The crown of the tooth, which is what is above the gum line, may look just fine but other problems lie beneath the gum line. The only way to get proper dental xrays is to have your pet anesthetized. You should ask your veterinarian what protocols they follow for anesthesia.

It is critical that your pet be properly evaluated to make the anesthesia as safe as possible. Questions to ask your veterinarian include Is lab work done prior to anesthesia? This is helpful in evaluating liver and kidney function, red blood count, and blood sugar just to name a few items.

Who will do the anesthesia and monitor my pet? Ideally you want your pet monitored by a trained veterinary technician who is watching heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen levels in the blood, and body temperature.

An IV catheter should be in place and IV fluids administered during the procedure.

This helps maintain blood

pressure and allows a quick way for other drugs to be administered.

Warming blankets and circulating warm air heaters should be used to help maintain a proper temperature for your pet. In our practice we have a licensed technician who monitors and charts your pet’s progress throughout the procedure.

Do you do local nerve blocks? Nerve blocks can give increased pain control for your pet and may lower the amount of general anesthesia that is needed during a procedure.

What happens if teeth have to be extracted? Unlike in people where remaining teeth may shift after extraction, the dog and cat has bone around the entire tooth so it prevents shifting. Even with multiple extractions your pet will still be able to eat and play.

I have patients that have lost all their teeth due to dental disease and still eat hard food. It is more important that your pet has a healthy, pain free mouth.

Avoid pain

There are those who would tell you that a proper dental can be done without anesthesia. I disagree with them.

By scraping the tarter off the crown of the tooth and not cleaning below the gum line, periodontal disease has not been addressed. Your pet may be stressed or suffer pain when being restrained for the scaling. Proper dental x-rays cannot be done without anesthesia nor can every tooth be properly probed. Teeth that are scaled and not polished with a high speed polisher are pitted and actually attract bacteria easier. You may think your pet’s teeth are in better shape than they really are which can lead to more dental problems in the long run.

The goal for all of us is to keep our pets healthy and out of pain. A good dental plan goes a long way to helping make this possible.

Anesthesia helps eliminate pain during the dental procedure. It gives the veterinarian the ability to check each tooth individually and probe below the gum around the entire tooth. With general anesthesia your pet has a tube placed down his or her windpipe which helps to prevent them from inhaling water or debris from the mouth.

Anesthesia will never be 100% risk free, but we do all we can to minimize those risks. There are some pets that are not good anesthetic candidates and may not be able to have dentals. Each individual pet needs a personal evaluation. Just because a pet has diabetes or a heart murmur doesn’t mean he or she can’t be safely anesthetized. In many cases, such as diabetes, proper dental care can make

Rebecca "Fannie" Dawkins has had a life of making others beautiful.

The cosmologist turned 100 on Feb 7, and she still cares for others.

"I pray every day for everybody in the community," Dawkins said as she sat in her West Columbia home. She has lived in the same place since 1948. It's a house her father built.

Dawkins ran Fannie's Beauty Salon for more than 40 years.

"I like to make people beautiful," Dawkins said. "I would do all I could to help bring out the beauty of a person. I fixed them up and made them look pretty."

And she was good at it.

Dawkins said she would have a line waiting for her touch, when she was in business.

Now, she gets around in a wheelchair. And she still has some spunk.

“Her mind is active. She's

independent and self-determined,” said Harry Jivers, who looks after Dawkins. He also said she is a “sweet lady.”

Dawkins comes from a big family and she loved it.

“There were 13 of us children,” said Henrietta Taylor, Dawkins' sister. Taylor, 90, is the baby.

To help celebrate her centennial, West Columbia City Councilman Boyd Jones, who represents Dawkins' district, presented a resolution to Taylor, and Dawkins' niece, Doretha Herlong at the council meeting last Tuesday.

Dawkins said she would have been at the meeting, but her transportation did not come through.

Born in 1917, Dawkins went to New Brookland High School and Clinton Junior College. She obtained her cosmetology license from Pope Beauty School. She has been an active member – and still is- of Turner AME Church for more than 50 years.

“Living right,” was her ex-

planation for her long life.

Dawkins, who came from a time when families raised their own meat and vegetables, advised children to mind their parents.

She also noted that families are smaller now, with only one or two children.

“I love a big family,” Dawkins said. And she loved traveling, by plane, train or car, to different cities for family reunions. She said she does not get to travel much any more.

And long lifespans are not uncommon for her family.

“My granddaddy lived to be 106,” Dawkins said. “When he died, there was nothing wrong with him, except he said his foot hurt.” His name was Milton Meadows.

And the celebration for Dawkins is not over. Mayor Bobby Horton said the city still wants Dawkins to come to council, to be recognized.

“She may be West Columbia's oldest resident,” Horton said.

For 67 years, Dooley’s Sport Shop has been more than a bait and tackle shop.

It’s been an institution for fishermen and neighbors alike.

But the laughter and jovial banter heard ’round the bait shop is coming to an end.

The Dooley family is closing the shop.

“I grew up in here,” said Byron Dooley, cousin to shop owner Charles Dooley.

“I’m going to miss it, especially the personal relationships I’ve made with our customers.”

Changes As with many Mom-andPop businesses, Dooley’s Sport Shop has fallen prey to a growing online marketplace and lower prices at big-box chains.

“People come in and take pictures of the products and go find them online,” Charles said. “They’ll even tell you they’re doing it.

I’m tired of fighting it.”

Another strain on the business comes from a changing Lake Murray.

What was once a fishing haven is now used more for boating and water sports.

“You can’t find spots to fish from the bank anymore,” Charles said. “Back 20 years ago, folks used to stop by, grab a box of worms and find a bank somewhere to fish from or maybe a dock.

“Now, 90-95% of folks who live along the lake don’t even fish. You almost have to have a boat to go fishing here.

“With people struggling to make ends meet around here, a boat is out of reach.”

An institution In 1950, Lonnie Hook Dooley, Charles’ father, started selling bait and tackle from his home back before the Lexington textile mill closed.

Once the mill closed, Lonnie opened the doors of Dooley’s Sport Shop.

It has employed four gen-

erations of Dooleys and countless others, including some familiar names around Lexington.

“We worked with a lot of high school kids over the years,” Charles said. “It’s been a pleasure seeing them grow up and become part of the community. (Lexington Mayor) Steve MacDougall worked here when he was in high school.”

With customers laughing in the background, Charles smiled.

“I’ll miss the people,” he said. “That’s the hardest part, not being around the people you’ve grown attached to.”

Closing the shop is bittersweet but he has no regrets.

“We made a good living out of it,” Charles Dooley said. “I raised a family and all out of it but I think it’s just time.”

As a parting message, he urged residents to help keep similar businesses up and running.

“Naturally, we’re gonna be a little higher in price, but support your local businesses,” Charles said.

It’s a Dog’s Life Marriage secrets

A young couple decided to wed. As the big day approached, they grew apprehensive.

Each had a problem they had never before shared with anyone, not even each other.

The Groom-to-be, overcoming his fear, decided to ask his father for advice.

“Father,” he said, “I am deeply concerned about the success of my marriage.

“I love my fiancée, very much, but you see, I have very smelly feet, and I’m afraid that my future wife will be put off by them.”

“No problem,” said dad.

“All you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and always wear socks, even to bed.”

This seemed to be a workable solution.

The bride-to-be, overcoming her fear, decided to take her problem up her mom.

“Mom,” she said, “When I wake up in the morning, my breath is truly awful.”

“Honey,” her mother consoled, “everyone has bad breath in the morning.”

“No, you don’t understand.

My morning breath is so bad, I’m afraid that my new husband will not want to sleep in the same room with me.”

Her mother said simply, “Try this: In the morning, get straight out of bed, and head for the bathroom and brush your teeth.

“The key is, not to say a word until you’ve brushed your teeth. Not a word,” her mother affirmed.

She thought it was certainly worth a try.

The loving couple were finally married in a beautiful ceremony.

Not forgetting the advice each had received, he with his perpetual socks and she with her morning silence, they managed quite well, until about six months later.

Shortly before dawn, the husband awoke with a start to find that one of his socks had come off. Fearful of the consequences, he frantically searched the bed.

This, of course, woke his bride who without thinking, immediately asked, “What on earth are you doing?”

“Oh, no!” he gasped in shock, “You’ve swallowed my sock!”

Breaking habits Two elderly women were fussing about their husbands over tea one day.

“I do wish my Leroy would stop biting his nails. That makes me terribly nervous!” the first one said.

“Oh, my Elmer used to do the same thing,” the other woman commented.

“But I broke him of that habit real quick.”

“What did you do?”

“I hid his teeth!”

Baby belly For weeks, a 6-year-old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house.

One day, the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child.

The 6-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event.

The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap one day and asked, “Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?”

Tommy burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mommy ate it!”

“Where’d we get him?” he asked his mom.

“He came from heaven,” his mother replied “Wow!” said the little boy.

“I can see why they threw him out!”

It seems that an elephant got too close to all the baby ducks the circus had brought in for Easter, and accidentally inhaled a bunch of them.

The poor elephant was choking on them and no one could help.

Some operating systems actually wait until you start to remove the USB drive before writing information to it.

The computer has one of two choices. It can immediately write those files to the drive or it can wait until you go to remove it to write it all at once.

If the computer waits, it saves on speed and space.

Windows is actually programmed to write the documents to the hard drive immediately.

A Linux operating system will wait until the last possible moment before writing.

While Windows, and usually Apple OS, doesn’t wait it is still a good idea to eject it first.

How do you eject it?

Generally speaking, look at your system tray. Where the time is displayed there is an arrow. If you click on this arrow it will show icons of some of the programs that are running right now.

One of those icons is probably going to look like your USB drive or similar to a rectangle. Right click on this icon and a menu will pop up. One of the menu options is to eject.

This tells your computer that you are done with the drive and are ready to remove it.

Once the computer makes sure all files are saved, it will send a message that you can now safely eject the drive.
