Fisher finds her calling as county’s next Coroner

Fresh off her GOP runoff win July 15, Margaret Fisher, is set to become Lexington County’s next coroner.

Fisher, 49, who has forged a career in law enforcement, will be the county’s first-ever female coroner, and will succeed Harry Harman, who died earlier this year after 37 years in office.

The Chronicle’s Hal Millard posed the following questions to Fisher, who faces no opposition in the Nov. 4 general election.

Q: You came out of nowhere to win the coroner’s race. Who is the real Margaret Fisher?

A: The real Margaret Fisher is the person you saw during the campaign. During 30-plus years of my husband and my family living in Lexington County and giving back to the community whenever we could, we have met a lot of good people and those are the people who voted and got me through to the run-off.

Q: Tell us a little about your personal background.

A: I grew up relatively poor. I was the youngest of five children. My mother and father worked hard for everything we had. Nothing was given to us and so that’s how I was raised. I work hard for everything that I have.

I knew I wanted a better life for my kids when they were born, so I worked even harder for them. I put myself through college as a single mother of two boys and earned two Associate degrees. God always placed people in my life when I needed them. God found me jobs, babysitters, friends, and all of these helped me make it through.

fessional background. But tell us what attracted you to nursing, then a career in law enforcement?

A: I needed a job that would support me and my children. My father was also dying of lung cancer during

that time and I was spending a lot of time with him at the hospital and helping my mother with him at home. I learned then that I liked helping other people. Nursing was the answer.

Of course, getting a two year degree in nursing meant that you were on the waiting list to get into clinical classes for two years.

During those two years of waiting, I decided that I would get my criminal justice degree. My grandfather was a police officer for 35 years and my father was a State Constable, so I loved

it. The rest is history.

A: My plan is simple when I take office. Do what is right for the citizens of Lexington County. I plan to evaluate the office and how it’s operating to see if there needs to be any changes.

Charleston, S.C.

e were visiting friends who have lived their entire lives in Charleston some time back.

We were talking about the quality of life in different parts of the state.

Frankly, we love beautiful Lexington County. There’s no place quite like it on God’s green earth.

Just living on Lake Murray is like enjoying your own private resort.

But our Charleston friends see it differently.

“You know, it’s a shame,” one of our Charleston friends said, almost with a catch in his throat.

“It makes me sad that not everybody can be so blessed as to live here.”

Battles of Charleston

Charleston is steeped in history as you’ll see just walking its streets and visiting its museums.

It has been the scene of many battles in both the wars for American independence from Britain and the southern war for independence from what southerners considered an oppressive federal government.

Times and southern views of Washington have not changed much today.

In 1775, before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, the British had their eyes on Charleston.

Failing to quickly crush Gen. George Washington’s Continental Army, in late 1775 the British began seeking other opportunities to strike a blow against the rebelling colonies.

Col. William Moultrie and the 2nd South Carolina Regiment built 16-footthick, sand-filled walls and palmetto logs which would absorb cannon balls.

Parker’s fleet reached Charleston on June 1 and Gen. Clinton decided to land on Long Island just north of Sullivan’s Island.

He thought his men could wade across Breach Inlet and assault the fort.

Commodore Parker believed that his two 50-gun ships, six frigates and the bomb vessel HMS Thunderer, would easily demolish the fort’s walls.

The battle begins

Facing assault, the Americans sent troops to the fort on Sullivan’s Island.

On June 17, Clinton’s force failed to wade across Breach Inlet. It was too deep. Thwarted, he began planning to make the crossing using longboats.

After days of bad weather, Parker moved forward on the morning on June 28 and ordered Thunderer to fire from extreme range while he closed on the fort with his other ships.

Under fire, the fort’s soft palmetto logs absorbed the incoming cannon balls rather than splintering.

Clinton began moving across Breach Inlet but his men came under heavy fire from American troops.

Unable to land, Clinton ordered a retreat.

Around noon, Parker directed his frigates to circle south and to positions from which they could flank Fort Sullivan’s batteries but all three grounded on an uncharted sandbar.

Two frigates were freed and rejoined the assault.

Dalmatian Duties A carpool mom was delivering a station wagon full of kids to their homes one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog.

The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties.

“They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster.

“No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.”

Then a third child brought the argument to a close.

“They use the dog,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”

Stupid Question A young new teacher was trying to prove to her students that they could do the math problems she was presenting that day.

She said, “Anyone who thinks they are stupid, please stand up.”

No one stood up. After a while, a student stood up.

She asked him, “Do you think you are stupid?”

He replied, “No, but I don’t want you to stand up there all by yourself.”

How to Photograph a Puppy Remove film from box and load camera.

Remove film box from puppy’s mouth and throw in trash.

Remove puppy from trash and brush coffee grounds from muzzle.

Choose a suitable background for photo.

Mount camera on tripod and focus.
