Technology is constantly advancing.

Sometimes it advances so fast that it seems to leave us behind.

Believe me, old dogs can learn new tricks.

I know you’re thinking, it’s easy for me, a reason-

ably young person, to say that. Let’s look at a few technological advances that even seniors should be using.

Tablets Tablets are simple, easy to use small computers.

There are apps that will help with memory and brain function. You can easily take and store photos. You can read and make the type as big as you need. They are lightweight and easy to hold.

You can even attach a keyboard.

Smart Phones Smart phones are similar to tablets with apps you can get to help you.

Don’t forget about fitness apps. Smart phones provide an easy one stop location for many things, like medication reminders, voice recognition, and large type to read text messages. Or it will read the text to you. I even keep a selection of books on my phone for when I am waiting for someone. There is a place for notes. Almost

all phones come with map software and gps access. So if you get lost, you can find your way home.

Skype Skype is a free video calling software that’s easy to set up and use.

You can install it on any smart phone, tablet or computer. An easy way to keep up with kids and grandkids who live in other states that you don’t get to see that often. As long as you are calling from a Skype pro-

Studies have shown that people who play computer games such as MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) will help your reaction time and cognitive function. First person shooter games on consoles do the same thing.

Largemouth bass: Slow to fair. Bass fishing is pretty slow on the lake. A basic pattern remains fishing topwater plugs early in the morning, and then when the sun gets up fishing slow sinking swimbaits and jigs off long points. Carolina rigs and shakey head worms should also catch some fish. Crappie: Slow to fair.

Down the lake crappie fishing has been slow, but up the lake some fish are being caught around main-lake brush in about 20-25 feet of water.

Golf Pointers Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

If you are afraid a full shot might reach the green while the group ahead are still putting, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.

The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.

If it isn’t broke, try changing your grip.

Golfers who claim they don’t cheat also lie.

Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent’s luck.

It’s surprisingly easy to sink a 50 foot putt when you lie.

Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

By Scoop Bellune Contractor Estimates Three contractors were visiting a tourist attraction on the same day. One was from New York, another from Texas, and the third from Florida.

At the end of the tour, the guard asked them what they did for a living. When they all replied that they were contractors, the guard said, “Hey, we need one of the rear fences redone.

Why don’t you guys take a look at it and give me a bid?” So, to the back fence they all went to check it out.

First to step up was the Florida contractor. He took out his tape measure and pencil, did some measuring and said, “Well I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.”

Next was the Texas contractor. He also took out his tape measure and pencil, did some quick figuring and said, “Looks like I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me.”

Without so much as moving, the New York contractor said, “$2,700.”

The guard, incredulous, looked at him and said, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?”

“Easy,” he said. “$1,000 for me, $1,000 for you and we hire the guy from Texas.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Age of Adaline” (PG-13) -- Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) survives a strange car accident while driving one night in 1938. A Very Authoritative Narrator tells us that due to some science-magic whatever, Adaline stopped aging, preserving her elegant blond 29-year-old form for all time. Tragic, I know.

After some years, Addy’s unaging beauty draws suspicion, so she changes identities every decade to keep her immortality a secret -- she’s kinda selfish.

This keeps her from getting too close to anyone, or falling in love, until she falls in love with a guy whose father (Harrison Ford) recognizes her as the lost love of his youth.

The film goes for that dreamy, timeless, starlit moody look, and achieves it across different time periods. It all looks good, but the story feels undercooked. Things limp along at times, and the ending feels a little off-kilter.

“Cyber-Seniors” (PG) -How do you get a senior citizen from knowing nothing about the computers to deftly hustling Facebook friends to check out their latest Youtube video?

Very patiently. That’s one lesson in this charming documentary about a group of retirees paired with teen volunteers who teach them how to use the Internet. When one senior posts her own cooking video to YouTube, it starts a contest among the old folks to see who can get the most “hits” online.

While at first, the cluelessness of the old folks is played for laughs, the real focus of the story comes from the new connections made and possibilities

opened up. It’s not meant to be an instructional film, but it does teach us a lot about the generational gap: It sure is deep, but not too wide to cross.

“Beyond the Mask” (PG) -- An English mercenary, Will (Andrew Cheney), working for the British East India company, gets backstabbed by his employer and reinvents himself as a masked vigilante, seeking revenge against his enemies who have relocated to the American colonies just before the revolution. He teams up with an annoying Benjamin Franklin, who spouts popular Benjamin Franklin sayings because that’s how he talked, I guess. Will falls in love with a nice lady (Kara Kilmer) and starts to learn that the key to redemption isn’t vengeance, but good faith and Christianity. He still gets his vengeance, though.

“American Heist” (R) -Frankie (Adrien Brody) served time for a crime that he and his younger

brother, James (Hayden Christensen), messed up. A free man again, Frankie gets together with his old robbery pals (Tory Kittles and rapper Akon) and pulls James in as a driver on their next job. James is trying to make a real living and patch things up with his girl (Jordana Brewster), but Frankie reels him in with guilt, and James botches yet another robbery. The two brothers are then forced to help with an even bigger, heist-ier heist.

Is this the One Last Job that leads to a better life?

Getting the answer might not be as exciting as you think.

onight finds me in good company with many things from many lifetimes. I sat down in my favorite chair this evening and thought of how many have occupied its seat. I bought this chair in New York many years ago. It was covered in horse hair and stuffed with straw. The William and Mary period it represents makes it a rather rare chair given its age and sturdy nature.

Countless times this chair has supported me as I moved through phases of my life.

Tonight finds me sentimental and somehow drawn to the story of the chair before I owned it; before I changed its story by merging it with mine.

The curve of the back, along with the width, the height and the depth of the seat offer a resting place of great comfort.

Originally crafted near 1700, this chair has stood through many world changes.

Somehow it was saved from ruin. Most likely poverty was the preservationist as chairs were rare, costly and something not for everyone.

Imagine a chair in a room full of stools and benches. The chair was a luxury indeed. The social status alone would have kept the chair from harm. That is, until mass production and common construction made chairs and other furnishings easier to obtain. The straw interior and horse hair cover would have become old fashioned and out of date. Tossing the chair aside would have seemed easy in NYC in the

1980’s.

The chair remains precious to me. It has held me in good times and in bad times. It is unwavering in it’s function having never changed. As I sit here this evening with many thoughts swirling through my mind, I am comforted by those same arms, back and seat that gave comfort to someone else many generations ago. As life changes it is soothing to recall a past that cannot be altered.

How wonderful that even a common object like a chair has a story to tell; a value beyond the physical.
