The Monster

(R) — The car has broken down, the weather is awful, your kid is complaining and the unspeakable monster lurking in the trees is getting hungry again. Horror director Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) creates a full-spectrum sense of dread when a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo are stuck in the middle of nowhere with a monster. Kathy (Zoe Kazan) is a hard-drinking underperforming mom to Lizzy (Ella Ballentine), a world-weary pre-teen who has little love left for mom.

On the road to leave Lizzy with her father, they’re stranded, and the terror really starts. Bertino succeeds by patiently building the characters and conflicts before thrusting them all into

The Light Between Oceans (PG-13) — A veteran of World War I (Michael Fassbender) takes up residence as the lighthouse keeper on a lonely island off the coast of Australia, and finds happiness when he falls in love with a bright beauty from the town (Alicia Vikander). Desperate for a child they cannot have naturally, they one day find a baby washed on shore in a boat with a dead man.

Despite every shred of decency and common sense telling them to report the missing child, the grief-stricken couple decides to adopt the infant as their own, setting more tragedy into motion.

It’s a romance and a tragedy and a handy tear-jerker with powerful acting and gorgeous cinematography.

What stops it from being a real success is the central conflict of the story — that these two reasonable people make a series of totally irrational and awful decisions, yet we’re supposed to feel bad for them in the fallout.

It’s not how they look or act that rings false, but the decisions they make that stretch plausibility.

solving, plot-stopping Harvard historian Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks reprising his role from The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons) wakes up in an Italian hospital with head trauma and no memory of the past two days.

A quick-witted doctor (Felicity Jones) helps Langford escape an assassin infiltrating the hospital.

This puts the pair on a whirlwind pursuit of a time bomb set to release a deadly virus called Inferno. Of course, since this is an adaptation of a Dan Brown book, the superweapon can be thwarted by analyzing clues about Renaissance-era religious artwork.

As the third installment of Dan Brown hijinks directed

by Ron Howard and starring Hanks, the beats of the story are pretty well known.

It might be that repetition has worn the formula thin, but this adventure seems to rely even more on urgency to keep the audience from questioning plot holes or making too-easy predictions about the telegraphed twists.

On a mission: Taking lacrosse to a higher level

Lexington High junior varsity lacrosse head coach Tanner Mills.

Tanner Mills faced a financial struggle in playing college lacrosse.

But he has found a new opportunity to continue in the sport he loved.

Mills played at Dorman High School for five years as goalie.

MaxPreps.com had him listed as the fouth-best goalie in the state. He received several offers from around the country.

When his family’s tight budget prevented him from attending a private school, he enrolled

at the University of South Carolina.

Instead of playing lacrosse for the Carolina Gamecocks, Mills became the head coach of the Junior Varsity lacrosse team at Lexington High.

He also acts as an assistant coach for the varsity team.

He helped lead Lexington to its fourth consecutive regional championship with his fundamental style of coaching.

Mills explains his coaching philosophy as “creating full-time guys that are not only strong on the lacrosse field but involved in the classroom and their community. That helps build their character in becoming more fundamentally sound, academically challenged, and

exceedingly cooperative.”

While coaching at Lexington last fall, Tanner became head coach for the local U-17 Inferno club. The team had never won in the previous two years, but Mills assisted in bringing the Inferno its first seasonal victories.

After working with Lexington High and the Inferno, Mills became the head coach of the team last summer.

While coaching for the recreational league again this fall, Tanner became president and CEO of Lex-Lax Inferno after director Dennis Dotterer stepped down.

Mills is now rebranding Inferno into Capital City 1-1-Six. It will adapt its style with a new coaching staff,

scholarship opportunities and preparation for players at the next level.

As a non-profit, Mills says Capital City will be able to give local businesses and other corporations the opportunity to sponsor the program to help provide tuition for players who could not afford it.

Eventually, Mills wants Capital City to be able to provide equipment to low-income area school districts.

He believes the program will succeed because “people buy into why you do it.

“Capital City 1-1-Six is making it a priority,” he said, “to create a lasting difference not only in players, parents and opposing teams but impacting the community as a whole.”

The fabulous life of Mabel Dodge Luhan MacLeod and Jerry Bellune love traveling together and spending their children’s inheritance. This is an account of their travel to the Southwest and back on blue highways, not interstates.

Mabel Ganson Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan was a larger-than-life figure.

She was said to be one of profound contradictions.

She was generous and petty, domineering and endearing.

Married four times and may have had relations with many other men.

She hosted famous men and women at her homes in Europe and New Mexico.

She was an art patron, writer and self-appointed savior of humanity.

We learned this quite by accident on the morning we planned to head east for South Carolina, a 1,600 mile trip by car mostly on secondary roads where you will find the real America.

We had tied to find her home days before without success but that morning we drove down a narrow road to an unpaved parking area and went in search of the house. No signs or markers showed the way.

MacLeod has an instinct for this kind of wandering and suggested we take a little path up a hill through the trees. As luck and her instincts would have it, Mabel’s house stood at the top.

He was making one of his regular tours of the factory when he spotted a young man leaning against a pile of boxes just outside the foreman’s office.

Since George, the foreman, wasn’t around, Beamon stood off to the side and watched to see just how long the young man would stand around doing nothing.

The young man yawned, scratched his head, looked at his watch, and sat on the floor.

He took out a nail file and began cleaning his nails.

Then he stretched, yawned again, and leaned back on the pile of boxes.

Beamon stepped from his hiding place and walked up to the young man.

“You!” he boomed. “How much do you make a week?”

The young man looked up indifferently. “$250,” he said.

Beamon swooped into the cashier’s office, took $250 from the cash box, and returned.

“Take it,” he said, “and get out!

Don’t let me see you around here again!”

The young man took the cash, put it in his pocket, and left.

Beamon snorted at his lack of remorse, embarrassment, or any other feeling.

Then he went looking for George. When he found him, Beamon was red with anger.

“That idler in front of your office,” Beamon said. “I just gave him a week’s pay and fired him.

What’s the matter with you, letting him stand around as though he had nothing to do?”

“You mean the kid in the red shirt?” George asked.

“Yes! The kid in the red shirt!”

“He was waiting for the twenty dollars we owe him for lunch,” George said. “He works for the coffee shop around the corner.”

Flossing The dentist gave his patient a lecture on the importance of proper dental hygiene. He then asked him, “Have you been

flossing religiously?”

“Well,” the man hedged, “I floss more often than I go to church.”

Business Intelligence A customer at the local grocery store marveled at the proprietor’s quick wit and intelligence.

“Tell me, what makes you so smart?” he asked the owner.

“I wouldn’t share my secret with just anyone,” came the reply. Then, lowering his voice so the other shoppers wouldn’t hear, he continued.

“But since you’re a good and faithful customer, I’ll let you in on it. Fish heads. You eat enough of them, you’ll be positively brilliant.”

“You sell them here?” the customer asked.

“Only $4 apiece,” said the grocer.

The customer quickly bought three. A week later, he was back in the store complaining that the fish heads were disgusting and he wasn’t any smarter.

“You didn’t eat enough,” replied the store owner, and the customer went home with 20 more fish heads. Two weeks later,

he was back and this time he was really angry.

“Hey,” he said, “You’re selling me fish heads for $4 a piece when I just found out I can buy the whole fish for $2. You’re ripping me off!”

“You see?” replied the grocer.

“You’re smarter, already.”

Knock on wood Three older ladies were discussing the problems of getting older.

One said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand, in front of the refrigerator, and can’t remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich.”

The second lady chimed in, “Yes, sometimes I find myself standing on the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.”

The third one responded, “Well, I am glad I don’t have that problem; knock on wood,” as she rapped her knuckles on the table.

She then looked up and said, “That must be the door, I’ll get it!”

Our ancestors made tools to make sure all food was eaten

T

his unusual silver object measures to a length of 11 inches. It was handmade by and signed by an English silversmith in 1792.

Pieces such as this were wrought of solid silver to facilitate the health of the household.

Silver objects were often implemented due to their antimicrobial properties.

The spoon was used to consume one of the few available sources of protein. The consumption of marrow became quite an elegant expression of a refined palate in the late 18th century. Marrow was often consumed on toasted points of crust-less bread. It was served along with other treats at a time when the scarce nature of food made consuming even seemingly ‘common’ items a celebration.

When marrow was served on toast points it was placed in a dish along side the toast; already removed from the bone.

You may remember the crescent moon shaped porcelain dishes that went along with your grandmothers set of china. These were known as ‘bone dishes.’ During the Victorian period they were used to hold the spent bones from fowl, beef or fish. They were placed to the side of the dinner plate. Their curved shape allowed them to rest against the circular dinner plate in a lovely way. I remember seeing “old people” eat bone marrow by snapping the bones and removing the marrow with the tine of a fork.

We are just a few generations away from people who used everything they had, as food was scarce and truly the source of life.

Respect for all aspects of a meal was clear.

Even the discards were used, no bones about it!

For the most part, Doug says that the fish that he and his tournament partner have been catching have been fairly shallow, and they haven’t caught much in more than 10 feet of water.

Most of the fish they are catching have been in less than 4 feet, but deeper water has been close by.

Fish are not scattered out in certain depth ranges but instead are holding to certain little spots, and it has been hard to locate them as they move around a lot.

Doug suspects that constantly dropping water levels have forced the fish to constantly reposition.

CHANNEL AND BLUE CATFISH: The bite is still pretty strong, although Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) warns that the recent warm weather has scattered fish out and slowed the bite just a little.

The best action is still coming from drifting cut herring across main lake humps and points in 20-40 feet of water, as well as exploring certain feeder creeks which are holding good numbers of fish.

With weather fluctuations anglers need to assess where the fish are holding on a particular day and then cater their game plan accordingly.

Sgt. Stubby: A mutt who made America proud

H

eroes come in many varieties. There are Super Heroes, everyday heroes, unlikely heroes and yes, even four-legged heroes. This story is from the latter category.

Since April 6, 2017 will mark the centennial of America’s entry into World War I, this is the perfect time to introduce you to Sgt. Stubby, the most decorated dog in that conflict.

It all started innocently enough in the summer of 1917. Soldiers from the 102nd Infantry were training on the Yale University campus when a stray dog wandered up.

He was a brindle patterned pup about one year-old, part Boston terrier, part bull dog, part Heaven only knew what else. Just an all-American mutt that took a shine to the unit and hung around to watch it drill.

Cpl. Robert Conroy took a shine to the dog, too, and more or less adopted him.

A strong bond instantly developed between them.

The dog was intelligent and quickly became attached to the men of the 102nd. He seemed to enjoy being taught new tricks — including lifting his right paw to his temple in a military salute. (Which later turned out to be a very important trick.)

Since the dog obviously was now with the unit for the duration, he needed a name. Someone suggested Stubby. It worked, so Stubby he was.

Orders eventually came for the 102nd to ship out to France. Soldiers were severely restricted on what they could bring with them; dogs weren’t on the list. But there was no way Stubby would stay behind. So Conroy stashed Stubby under his overcoat and smuggled him aboard.

A few days out to sea, Conroy’s commander discovered the dog. He was furious ... and he wasn’t going to lose his commission over some stray mutt.

He was about to seize the dog when Stubby drew himself to attention and smartly saluted. Who could

Once in France, the 102nd joined the 26th “Yankee” Division and went straight into the trenches, commencing eight months of serious combat.

That was when the soldiers discovered the sharp little dog was more than a mere pet; he was a battlefield asset. Stubby instinctively understood lives were at risk and he defended the men with the same ferocity of your family dog defending your house.

Stubby fought in an amazing 17 battles. His baptism of fire came in early 1918 when he was under 24 hour artillery bombardment for a full month.

His “Let’s get ‘em!” aggressiveness and relentless cheerfulness even in the worst conditions boosted morale.

Stubby’s sharp nose and keen hearing detected incoming artillery shells and poison gas attacks before they struck. Injured in the leg by shrapnel, he was sent to a hospital in the rear where he cheered wounded warriors while he recovered. Then it was back to the front, where his comrades had a special gas mask made just for him.

Stubby helped locate and rescue injured soldiers.

He was about 10 years-old when the dog who had been in so much combat died peacefully in his sleep in 1926.

The New York Times ran a half-page obituary, nearly twice the space given to the passing of foreign heads of state.

Conroy had the remains preserved and donated them to the Smithsonian in 1956.

You can still see him in the Price of Freedom exhibit there. There’s also a brick bearing his name in Kansas City’s Walk of Honor.

A new generation of Americans will soon learn of the little dog’s heroism. Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero, an animated feature-length film, is schedule for release in 2018.

In his own way, Sgt. Stubby exemplified a canine version of the American Spirit.

He was a mutt from an undistinguished background, plain but loyal, ready to tackle every challenge that confronted him, and to overcome them all.

In my book, it doesn’t get any more American than that.
