I really, really dislike Internet Explorer.

My dislike borders on pure hatred.

It is a poorly written program and a computer memory hog.

I love Chrome and Firefox.

If you have never given them a chance, please download and try them.

It can change how you surf the web.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, the little “e” icon with the swoop around it that you use to access the internet is Internet Explorer. Other programs do not come predownloaded to computers.

Safari, Chrome and Firefox

If you are using a Mac, Safari is great.

It is fast. It is slim.

But Chrome and Firefox beat it in almost every test.

A dear friend sent me a link with some of the better Chrome plug-ins you can acquire. The plug-ins are what I love about Firefox and Chrome..

For instance, OneTab is a Chrome plug-in that will save all open tabs into one tab and show it to you each time you open Chrome.

For example, if you are doing research for your upcoming vacation and you have 10 tabs open. You want to save them all for later so that you can keep reading but bookmarking each tab is frustrating.

Instead, click OneTab to save them for you. You can save several different groupings at once.

How smart is the Google search engine?

The Search by Image plug-in for Chrome lets you see just how smart it has become over the years.

For example, you want to know about a bug you found in your house.

Take a picture, upload it to Google images using the Search by Image plug-in and the Google search engine will give you it’s best guess as to what it is.

These machines really are going to take over soon.

Let’s be honest, Facebook is addictive.

My personal favorite and one that I use daily is Grammarly. This Chrome plugin will check your Grammar as you type.

Yes, Microsoft Office does this. Yes, to some degree Chrome does this.

What makes Grammarly different?

It doesn’t check just spelling. It also checks comma usage, subject-verb agreement and even that you are using the right there, their, or they’re. So

search item if it doesn’t auto bring it up.

Then in the search box of the web store just search what you want to find.

FISHING REPORT LAKE MURRAY:

Crappie: Slow. Some results reported by tightlining. Go shallower in the afternoon when the water warms up. Some can be found on deep brush around 20 feet. Use jigs or minnows very slow. Fish can be hard to find in deep water, so look at the mouths of creeks that split off from the main river in 12-15 feet.

Striper: Fair. Check down the lake in the back of the big creeks. Some schooling reported up the river. Use freelining with live bait.

Couch Theater DVD PREVIEWS

Ravi’s not the most traditionally inclined guy, and he’s even pretty shy for an actor. It’s a fun, lighthearted look at love, tradition and change.

“The Assassin” (R) -- This stunning martial-arts drama set in ancient China has been cutting a swath through various film festivals for the past year. Nie Ninniang (Qi Shu) was betrayed and exiled years ago, and has since become a graceful and effective assassin under the guidance of a scheming nun. After showing some compassion, the young killer is then tasked with executing her former betrothed. The real thrust of this feature is its astounding visuals, especially long, gorgeous shots that put color and form to work creating a living painting. The political and intimate dramas may not land for everyone, but some of these scenes will leave an impression on any kind of viewer.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Burnt” (R) -- Bradley Cooper stars as a hotshot chef who is equal parts charm and self-destruction -- with a seasoning of carefully crafted stubble. Once a sizzling kitchen captain in Paris, American chef Adam Jones (Cooper) made a sputtering grease-fire out of his life with drugs and nastiness. Rehabbed and back on the culinary scene in London, Adam’s got to assemble the right crew -including Sienna Miller as a reluctant romance and Omar Sy as a former rival -- then start cooking his way to redemption.

Cooper supplies his best bad-boy charm, but that smarm loses its flavor after a while, and you’re stuck with a bunch of characters who keep forgiving a raging jerk.

The ample shots of food will make you want to feast through your eyes, but the story doesn’t do much to plate it.

Hawkins’ performance as Nathan’s mother, who carried so much of the struggle, supporting Nathan along the way while keeping her hopes in check.

“A Brilliant Young Mind” (PG-13) -- Young Nathan has excelled at math since elementary school, but he suffers from a disability that makes it difficult for him to connect with people or even manage the barrage of information from the outside world. As a teen, Nathan (Asa Butterfield) represents the United Kingdom at the International Math Olympics, an undertaking that could open up his world or shut him down.

Director Morgan Matthews does a great job of putting you inside Nathan’s mind without resorting to flashy camera moves or special effects. Especially strong is Sally

“Meet the Patels” (PG) -- Nearly 30 and newly single, actor Ravi Patel agrees to try things the way his Indian parents suggest. Ravi and his sister Geeta co-direct this documentary -- partially told in animation -- about Ravi’s search for love through somewhat more “traditional” means: His information is spread through a network of relatives and friends, plus there are matchmakers and speed-dating conventions for people who have favorable family lines. Brookland-Cayce Sophomore Nathan Walton is an extraordinary swimmer.

Walton won the state high school championship in the 100-meter butterfly event in October. He won the 100-meter butterfly back in the short course state meet in Greenville last February, just two months after turning 15 and moving to a higher age group.

Sarah Lowery, Nathan’s coach and Algebra II teacher at BCHS, gave some insight as to why Walton is doing well in his sport.

“Nathan approaches practice and competition, he brings 110 percent,” Lowery said.

His club swim team coach sees the same characteristics.

“As a sophomore, he’s able to hang in there with the seniors,” said Heath Edwards, Walton’s coach at Palmetto Aquatics, the club from which Walton swims.

Nathan said he swims

out of necessity.

“I couldn’t do anything else,” said Walton, with a laugh, when asked why he chose to be a swimmer.

He said his skills did not match soccer or football.

Those sports just didn’t work out.

But swimming has.

While his win at the state high school meet was high profile, it has taken years of work to get Nathan to where he is.

“Nathan started swimming when he was five for the Quail Hollow Swim and Racquet Club Summer League program,” said Walton’s mother, Susan.

Edwards has coached Nathan for six years. He said in that time, Nathan has become more coordinated and developed as a swimmer. But there was a time when his body was outgrowing his age and Nathan had to catch up.

Walton wants to become a swimmer for a team at a major college. He has that much ability and he is one of the top students academically, in his class.

Teardrop vial saved memories of the past

T

his diminutive work of silver art is a rarity from an earlier age. Measuring only an inch and a half in length, it embodies a cultural theory much larger than its diminutive size would imply.

Capturing tears was a pastime of emperors who fancied tears as personal connections to past lives. Knowledge of past joy and past pain was considered a powerful advantage in the modern world of 1780-1800.

Crafted in the same gourd form as large palace urns and other vases from the same period, the connection to 18th century Oriental sensibilities is clear.

Wrought completely by hand by a silversmith of great expertise and talent, it retains the original dome lid which is attached to an upright fixed handle by a thread-thin chain.

The body is fashioned by spinning silver layer upon layer, causing an opacity which allows the piece to hold liquid.

Champlevé enamel decorates the surface in colors of lapis and turquoise – colors favored in porcelains, jewelry and clothing. This signature of the silver-

smith is clearly present on the base.

In Champlevé enameling, troughs are carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object, and filled with enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses. The surface is polished after the object has cooled.

This bottle is from a home in Charleston and is the only one like it I have ever seen.

When I purchased it, it was still on the ecru silk velvet ribbon it was last worn on – likely in the Victorian period. It was brought to Charleston from a trip to China at the turn of the century by early members of the family who were missionaries from 1877 until 1908.

Chicken Burrito Salad Prep time: 15 minutes Serves: 6

Salad:

1 small head romaine lettuce, torn into small pieces

1 cup cooked brown rice

1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed

1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes

1 can (10 ounces) chicken breast chunks, drained and flaked

1 can (10 ounces) corn kernels, drained

1 can (4.25 ounces) diced green chilies, drained

1 can (2.2 ounces) sliced ripe black olives, drained Dressing:

2 tablespoons freshsqueezed lime juice

1 tablespoon fresh chopped cilantro

3 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil salt and ground black pepper, to taste

Chicken Burrito Salad

Salad: In large platter or individual bowls, place lettuce leaves. Top with brown rice, black beans, diced tomatoes, chicken, corn, green chilies and black olives.

Dressing: In small bowl, combine lime juice and cilantro; whisk in olive oil.

Add salt and pepper, to taste. Drizzle dressing over salad.

1 can (13.5 ounces) spinach, well drained

1 cup fresh parsley leaves 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup walnuts or almonds

1 large garlic clove

1 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 box (16 ounces) fettuccine noodles

2 tablespoons butter

1 medium onion, chopped

1 large carrot, peeled and chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder

1 can (14 ounces) chicken or vegetable broth

2 cans (15 ounces) 100% pumpkin

1 can (14 ounces) coconut milk

1 teaspoon salt pumpkin seeds

In food processor, combine spinach, parsley, cheese, nuts, garlic, basil, salt and pepper; blend well. In slow, steady stream, add olive oil until mixture is blended and smooth.

Cook fettuccine as package directs. Drain. Toss spinach pesto with fettuccine.

In large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

Add onion, carrot, garlic, ginger and curry powder. Cook until carrots are almost soft, 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add broth and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer until carrots are very soft, 10 minutes.

Transfer to blender or food processor and puree until very smooth. Return to pan and stir in pumpkin, coconut milk and salt. Cook over medium-low heat until heated through, 2-3 minutes.

Garnish with pumpkin seeds, if desired, and serve.

Southern Style Succotash with Sweet Corn Sauce Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves: 4

4 ounces olive oil

1 can (14.5 ounces) sweet corn kernels, drained

1 can (15.5 ounces) butter beans

1 can (15 ounces) sweet peas 1/2 cup sliced canned carrots, drained and diced 1/4 cup canned diced tomatoes

8 sprigs fresh thyme

1 fresh bay leaf salt and pepper, to taste Add olive oil to large skillet and quickly saute all ingredients with salt and pepper until heated through, about 5 minutes. Serve on top of Sweet Corn Sauce.

Sweet Corn Sauce

6 ounces canned corn, excess liquid strained off

3 ounces champagne or dry white wine

4 tablespoons butter salt pepper thyme sprigs In blender, puree corn and champagne until very smooth. Strain through fine strainer and place strained corn juice in small saucepan. Heat until simmering and slowly add cold butter, salt, pepper and fresh thyme.

1 medium yellow onion, diced

1 small green bell pepper, cored, seeded and diced

1 can (14 ounces) vegetable broth

1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes

1 can (10 ounces) whole baby clams, drained

1 cam (8.5 ounces) peas, drained

1 can (6 ounces) medium shrimp, drained

1 can (3.8 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained

Curried Pumpkin Soup

In 2-quart saucepan over medium heat, heat oil; add onion, green pepper and garlic. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add rice and vegetable broth. Over high heat, bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 20 minutes.

Stir in tomatoes, clams, peas, shrimp and olives; cook 5 minutes.

CAREGIVER RELIEF: Babcock Center is launching WOW!
