PICKS OF THE WEEK Queen of Katwe (PG) — In

Masterminds (PG-13) —

Zach Galifianakis and a posse of SNL veterans give a comedic interpretation of one of the largest cash robberies in U.S. history, committed by “hillbillys” in the heady days of 1997.

David Ghantt (Galifianakis) is a fumbling guard for an armored car company, and a perfect sucker for his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) to sweet-talk into an ill-conceived heist run by a greasy huckster (Owen Wilson).

Rounding out the menagerie are SNL performers Leslie Jones, as a cop gobsmacked by the stupidity of the perps; Jason Sudeikis, as a sleazy hitman; and Kate McKinnon, as Ghantt’s fiancee with an unsettling gaze.

Despite the collective comedic power assembled here, the movie is low on laughs and long on forced-awkwardness and slapstick humor.

(PG-13) — Tyler Perry writes, directs and stars in another moralistic misadventure with the militant matron Madea.

Brian (Perry not wearing any special makeup) has to work on Halloween and enlists the help of his cantankerous aunt Madea (Perry again) to help keep an eye on his rebellious 17-year-old daughter, Tiffany (Diamond White).

Madea’s real call to action comes when Tiffany manages to escape with her friend and heads toward a frat party — the ultimate den of sin. It plays like your usual Madea comedy, with only a few moments of horror-movie satire filling out the extended sitcom-episode vibe.

police officer and current full-time badass, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) burst from books into the film world in 2012 with a bone-crunching first impression.

a gorgeous dramatization of real-life struggle and success, teenage Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) goes from her impoverished life in a Ugandan slum to being an internationally recognized chess prodigy.

Raised by her single mother (Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o) and waking up each morning in a hut, Phiona is still illiterate when she is invited to take up chess by a Christian missionary (David Oyelowo).

While her story is an uplifting one, Phiona’s rise comes with hard lessons — you need a plan to get what you want, and that plan may have to change.

Do not be tempted to write this one off as another glossy, feel-good underdog story.

We’ve seen plenty of chessunderdog stories, and this one is a Disney production, but it steers clear of cornball territory and doesn’t shy away from the complexities of the story.

PUBLIC NOTICE The County of Lexington intends to sign Programmatic Agreement Addendum The use of federal funds under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, i.e. Community Development Block Grant- Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR), requires the review of project impacts on historic properties. The County of Lexington is planning to expedite delivery of disaster recovery funds to CDBG-DR recipients by adopting a streamlined process for Section 106 review of CDBG-DR projects. Zion Carroway is a high school player who deserves to play at the college level.

“He had a good year once he got settled in” said Coach Rusty Charpia, Carroway's coach at Brookland-Cayce High School. Carraway played linebacker for the Bearcats in 2016.

“We did not get him until after the season started,” Chapia said of Carroway. “He came to us from Hartsville. His first game was against Swansea (game 7 of 14).”

But just because B-C did not get Carroway until mid-season, does not mean the coaching staff did not know him.

“He was here in the ninthgrade,” Charpia said.

Carraway moved with his mother's job that was in Hartsville. He moved back when she came to the Brookland-Cayce area to work again.

“He is a straight-A student. He's qualified,” said Charpia. Carroway is also a

Charpia said Carroway helped a lot in B-C's 3A Region 5-clinching win over Gilbert. Carroway returned an interception for a TD in that game.

“He was big in the win playoff at Bluffton, too,” Charpia said. That win sent the Bearcats to the Lower State Final.

Mike Hagins broadcasts BC football games on 1620AM The Dove-Radio. He is sold on Carroway.

“Zion Carroway is explosive. He has a nose for the football,” said Hagins. “And he passes the eye test.”

Hagins also said Carroway has college football speed.

Hagins said the only thing that could hurt Carroway is his mid-year transfer status.

“He will be a prize for any team that gets him,” he said.

Charpia said Presbyterian, Charleston Southern and The Citadel are some schools interested in Carroway.

“They just have not pulled the trigger,” he said. “But there's still time.”

W

e have recently been seeing lots of new kittens and puppies following the Christmas season.

It is great to have new pets in the house, but the young ones require some training. House training will be a top priority for both your kitten or puppy.

Kittens In the case of your kittens you want them to use a litter box. Usually your kitten has learned some of what he/she needs to know by watching its mother.

To start with you should restrict your kitten to a smaller area with a properly sized litter box. The kitten should naturally want to use the litter in the box. If you have houseplants be sure and try to keep the kitten away from them unless you are home.

Another option is to place the houseplants in a room the kitten cannot get into. If this isn’t feasible you can place small rocks over the soil to discourage the kitten from using the soil as a litter box.

Typically, your kitten will seek the litter box after he/she eats, wakes up, or has been playing. You may initially

want to put them in the litter box following any of these activities. You should be sure to praise or reward your kitten if he/she goes “potty.”

The location of the litter box is important as cats like some privacy and quiet when they have to go to the bathroom.

You should be sure your kitten will always have access to the litter box. You should also avoid putting the food and water dishes beside the litter box.

You don’t like to eat right by the toilet and neither do they.

Ideally clean out bowel movements right away and clean out urine at least daily. A clean box will encourage your kitten to continue to go there.

Another important training tip for kittens is teaching them proper play especially if they are strictly indoors. Play helps them develop hunting and communication skills.

You will notice your kitten likes to stalk, chase and pounce on toys.

You may even have to show them how to play with some of the toys you provide. Kittens like small objects (though not so small that they can be swallowed) they can bat around or hold between their feet or in their mouth.

Only use string toys if you are supervising your kitten and put them away when you are not home. A big NO is to use your hands to play with your kitten.

This may be cute when they are small but can lead to a serious injury when they are older. Toys that can act like

prey such as mice on the end of a string can avoid injury to you.

When you will be gone, you should have a safe area for your kitten to stay. Ideally this should include some type of perch, a scratching post or pad, toys of all types, something to climb, and maybe a few treats hidden in the room.

Your kitten should also have a litter box and soft blanket or bed for napping.

This is also a good time to get your kitten used to a crate.

This will help when having to take your kitten to visit the veterinarian. Having toys, treats, and a comfortable towel or blanket in the crate will make it more appealing.

Puppies Puppies are not as easy as kittens to train. One of the

best things to do for your puppy is to get him/her on a consistent schedule so they know when to expect to go outside.

Some hints for training your puppy: A rule of thumb on how many hours your puppy can wait to go is to add 1 hour to your puppy’s age in months. For example, a 2 month old puppy can wait about 3 hours before needing to go to the bathroom. If you are gone longer be sure to have some papers or pee pads for your puppy to use.

If you are home and not asleep try and take your puppy out every hour.

Play close attention to your puppy’s behavior. Some may not be able to wait an hour. If they act like they need to go out it is better to take them out. Sometimes you may need

to make a log of the day as to when you take your puppy out to the bathroom, when they actually go to the bathroom, and where they go to the bathroom.

Try and take your puppy out at least two times before you go to work. Once you get home from work or anytime you have been gone, your first job is to take the puppy out again. If you are going to take the puppy on any trips, allow him/her to go to the bathroom before leaving and as soon as you reach your destination.

It can be very helpful to have a word or phrase the puppy can associate with going to the bathroom. This cue can be very helpful when you are expecting your dog to go to the bathroom in a new place.

You should try and designate one area of your yard where you want your puppy to go to the bathroom. Punishing your puppy for an accident doesn’t help and can actually create other problems, even if you “catch them in the act.”

Take the puppy outside right away and say your cue word. Praise the puppy if he/ she goes to the bathroom.

Even if they were finished in the house and don’t do anything outside, still make it a fun experience just being outside. If you have to clean an accident, be sure and use a bacterial enzymatic cleaner such Anti Icky Poo. Crate

training, if done properly, can be a big help in training your puppy. It can help keep your puppy out of trouble, but more importantly, your puppy learns it is okay to be by itself.

These periods of confinement should not be excessive.

When you are home to watch your puppy, they should be out of the crate.

Your puppy needs to romp and play and begin to learn other lessons. When you first bring your puppy home, you may find it better to have the crate in your bedroom. Your puppy can hear, smell, and maybe even see you.

Also don’t make the mistake of going to the crate when your puppy cries. This can reinforce the behavior of “calling for help.”

Go to the crate once your puppy quiets down. Did I mention you will lose sleep having a new puppy. If your puppy can’t go through the night without a “potty” break, try and get up before your puppy starts crying. Take them out, but try and keep the lights dim, use a soft voice, and no playing.

As always consult with your veterinarian if you are having problems getting your puppy or kitten trained. Sometimes there can be a medical problem that is causing a roadblock in the training. There are more tips to training than the ones I have given. Try not to get frustrated with the training. As the saying goes, patience is a virtue.

Rehabilitation Department Awarded Grant for Drop-Arm Recliners The Foundation awarded nearly $500,000 in grants to hospital programs for 2017, including funding for the Rehabilitation Department’s request for drop-arm recliners. Drop-arm recliners provide patients who have difficulty transferring to the bed or chair from issues

like amputation, stroke, significant weakness, lower extremity weight-bearing restrictions the ability for earlier mobilization. This could help decrease length of stay for patients and reduce risk of employee injury with safer transfers.

Community Fundraising LMC Foundation is lucky to have strong community partners who support our programs through their own fundraising efforts. Resolution Number Three: Think about using some different toothpastes and rinses than what you have used in the past.

When I ask most adults (or kids) what kind of toothpaste they use, its usually Crest or Colgate of some form or another. And for many people, an over the counter toothpaste like that is really fine.

But there are many people who could use a couple of different types of toothpaste and rinses with special characteristics that can be very beneficial.

For adults with a lot of tooth sensitivity, or root exposure or a tendency to develop tooth decay, a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste could really help. No matter what you think about fluoride in the drinking water, there is a ton of evidence to show that fluoride does decrease tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. Sold in rinses or toothpaste form, the longer the fluoride stays in contact with the tooth, the better the result. (Another reason to get your teeth cleaned more frequently, is to take advantage of the fluoride rinses used by the dental hygienist too.)

For patients with xerostomia (remember…dry mouth),

there are many over the counter products that can help.

The Biotene products have been around forever. Also look for a new product called Spry Rain. These come in rinses, toothpastes and even a gel you can rub on your gums.

Biotene is in most drug stores.

Spry products are hard to find. We actually have them in the office for sale, but you can occasionally find them on amazon.com.

Closys is another product that is available in many drug stores. Used mostly as a rinse, it is good for bad breath and dry mouth.

Most mouthwashes contain alcohol in some form or another, and it is best to stay away from them. The alcohol tends to dry out your mouth and actually make dry mouth or bad breath a bit worse!

A product that we have

started recommending to our patients with gum disease or mouth soreness is called “Tooth and Gum Tonic”. (This is actually a product I have very recently switched to.)

Tooth and Gum Tonic comes in a toothpaste and a rinse.

Honestly, both have a very “medicinal” taste, but what we have seen for folks with gum problems or after having some “gum work” done has been nothing short of amazing. And it doesn’t stain your teeth like products in the past have. Tooth and Gum Tonic products are only available through dental offices.

Resolution Number Four: Think Antioxidant and Decreasing Inflammation!

There is so much research that shows the importance of decreasing inflammation in your mouth and your body to improve your overall health.

Certainly, your diet is a huge source of antioxidants, and decreasing inflammation. So is improved oral health care, repairing and restoring broken or worn out old dentistry, and taking care of all of those sources of infection in your mouth (such as broken teeth, abscessed teeth, partially erupted or problematic wisdom teeth).

Replacing your missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures and partials are also important to allow you to eat the diet we all know we need to eat…fruits, vegetables, and all the crunchy things that a healthy diet includes.

These are just a couple of things to think about going into the New Year, to make your dental health and overall life better!

‘Sleeping jewels’ remained safe in this silver casket box

T

his rectangular silver box was made near 1880 and features some of the iconic decorative techniques of the period. A close look reveals a pattern of a hunt scene that decorates each panel of the box.

The use of these motifs on a box that at a glance appears most feminine, tells a romantic story of the one who gave the box with great affection for the receiver. The box is elevated by small decorative feet that hold it aloft giving it a greater importance than a box set flat on it’s base. There are two handles that flank each end, giving rise to the idea of it being carried

from place to place.

The more remarkable aspect of the box would be the cranberry/white swirl slag glass inserted into the silver borders atop the box.

This rare and beautiful glass is not often used in concert with silver as it would be subject to damage during the actual manufacture of the box, as well as afterward when the box was in daily use.

The use of precious silver, precious art glass, as well as the hunt scene motif all combine to provide us with a beautiful and memorable object.

The piece was actually called a “casket box.”

Rather than having a macabre association, it was part of the sentiment of this time period to store one’s jewels for safekeeping by “putting them to sleep” in a safe place. A box like this was to be treasured and cared for throughout one’s entire life, from birth to the grave.

This box functions now as a beautiful accent piece, retaining it’s value as a piece of art with a story now lost to time.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report BASS: It continues to be a pretty tough fall for bass fishing on Lake Murray, and veteran tournament angler Captain Doug Lown reports that it’s been hard to establish a consistent pattern for catching fish.

Even when anglers find numbers of fish, it has been hard to find good ones – a 4½ pounder has been a big bass in most recent tournaments.

For the most part, Doug says that the fish that he and his tournament partner have been catching have been fairly shallow, and they haven’t caught much in more than 10 feet of water.

Most of the fish they are catching have been in less than 4 feet, but deeper water has been close by.

Fish are not scattered out in certain depth ranges but instead are holding to certain little spots, and it has been hard to locate them as they move around a lot.

Doug suspects that constantly dropping water levels have forced the fish to constantly reposition.

At times rock has been the best cover, and with water levels low, a lot of docks don’t have any decent water.

Most of the fish they are catching are coming on shakey head worms and jigs, and Doug believes that if water levels will stabilize fishing could get more consistent.

CHANNEL AND BLUE CATFISH: The bite is still pretty strong, although Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) warns that the recent warm weather has scattered fish out and slowed the bite just a little.

The best action is still coming from drifting cut herring across main lake humps and points in 20-40 feet of water, as well as exploring certain feeder creeks which are holding good numbers of fish.

With weather fluctuations anglers need to assess where the fish are holding on a particular day and then cater their game plan accordingly.

The President’s Cow: How a family pet almost became burger meat

F

or two years in the early 20th Century, the Washington press corps was fascinated by a White House resident.

They reported every development and vied for exclusive interviews. It wasn’t the president, nor the first lady or even one of their children.

It was a 1,500-pound member of the president’s extended family who stole America’s heart.

She was Pauline Wayne, a Holstein cow who captured the media’s fancy in a way no other presidential animal has before or since. Yet at the height of her

fame, she came dangerously close to an unplanned trip to the slaughterhouse. Here’s how it happened.

Back in the 19th Century, there was no dairy in the nation’s capital.

Many Washingtonians kept a cow on their property (adding a big dose of methane to all the gas coming out of the Capitol, too).

So when William Howard Taft’s family arrived at the White House in 1909 there was nothing unusual about their cow Mooly Wooly grazing on the South Lawn.

She supplied fresh milk and butter which, given the 300-plus pound Taft’s legendary appetite, was no small task.

Mooly Wooly died suddenly in 1910, supposedly after eating too many oats.

Her death was national news, with The Washinton Post scolding, “She had never been instructed by experts that oats are for horses.”

Producers even asked if they could feature Pauline in a traveling production of the play Way Down East.

The offer made Taft laugh, but the answer was a firm “no.”

Pauline Wayne made a claim to White House fame: she was the very last cow to live on the premises.

From the Wilsons onward, the Executive Mansion’s milk came from a dairy, not a trip to the barn.

It seems strangely quaint now that a simple cow once commanded so much interest. And yet it was deeply humanizing, too.

It reminded everyday Americans that their president got his milk the same way they did.

Maybe we should revive the custom of having our president grab a milk pail and head to the back yard first thing every morning.

Heaven knows it couldn’t hurt.

As they come back into the concert hall, a patron in the audience notices the confusion by the conductor and says, “Something seems wrong up there.”
